We were staying nearby and ate here both nights. The menu was fairly extensive ( which made choosing difficult), but the dishes we had were all homemade and delicious.

I thought overall it was a great place, stayed in the shepards hut. Evening meal was really good with a wide selection on offer and reasonably priced, bar staff were really friendly. Good breakfast in the morning. If you are looking for gastro food don't go but if you want good wholesome food at a good price then I would certainly recommend me it.

This is the second or 3rd time i have been to this pub, lovely location. The food took the best part of an hour to arrive and the pub wasn't even busy. I had quiche, it was clearly home made but it was bland and considering how hot it was but lacking any browning on the top, heated in microwave. The sweet potato fries were overcooked, hard and had an onion taste from the oil they had been cooked in. Sat in smoking area at front of pub as it was in the sun and the pub was cold inside (not the1st time noticing that) and didn't fancy the beer garden in shade at the back, which would've been better for the smokers. The bar staff were very helpful, attentive and friendly. The menu is extensive but this is probably not in their favour - as Gordon Ramsey says, it's better to have a smaller selection and do it well. I won't be going back

We had happened upon this place by chance on a drive out and vowed to return for food. Greeted by friendly staff and Anton the owner gave us a tour of the beautiful and quirky accommodation choices.. can see the pride and rightly so. Ideal for anyone staying in that area or passing through en route. The space inside and out of the cosy cabins/ yurts is wonderfully unexpected recommend taking a look. I had the lamb and ale pie (never come across that before and other interesting and unusual pies on offer also) husband opted for steak and ale both came with chips and veg and jug of gravy which I didn’t use as the gravy in pie was so delicious I didn’t want to dilute it but husband said gravey was very tasty as were starters! We thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience even waiting for food appreciating all home prepared/cooked in a traditional pub environment. We will definitely be back to sample more of the extensive menu.

We stayed in an Air BnB down the road and decided to eat at the pub on the Friday night. It was quite busy when we arrived and we were advised there would be a wait for food as we ordered pie which was cooked freshly to order. The wait wasn't excessive and the food was delicious. We loved the choice of potatoes (including dauphinoise). The pie was perfectly cooked and there was a good range of drinks. The pub was very cosy, and the staff lovely We would definitely go again when we are next in the area.

We booked the day before for our large group (15 of us!) and they were very accommodating and understandably asked us to pre order food. This worked brilliantly and they brought out the children's food first with the adult starters - very thoughtful. We all really enjoyed our meals and hope to be back when we next go on holiday. Thanks very much!

Yesterday, we and another couple each drove 20 miles to meet up for the first time in 2 yrs at this pub where we have been many times before. Our friends booked a table for 7.30pm a week earlier but the pub was quiet ordered drinks and food, the latter arriving by 8pm - fine ! However, the guy serving us came to our table at 8.50pm and asked for our last drinks order. He also said there was just 15 mins “drink-up” time. We were out of the building by 9.05pm and the two guys working had locked up and left before had even got to our cars. Absolutely disgusting, ruined our evening that we had looked forward to. BTW, the chips were hard, not even hot and had obviously been re-heated. For the quality of food offered, very expensive. One half of the pub was cold, no open fire lit ! We will go elsewhere next time, somewhere more professionally run and who understand the responsibilities of being in the hospitality business.

Having sent 2 emails, I'm sad to say I've had no reply and I am appalled at their lack of communication. We stayed in one of the yurt cabins and had so many problems, not a single one of them addressed by the staff or owners after we emailed. Inedible, badly burnt food, flys all over the restaurant and bar when there were none outside which means they must be coming from somewhere inside the pub, no hand sanitizer in any dispensers either in our room or the bar despite our asking for some 3 times, terrible cheep sachets of sauce like a road side drive through that were clearly out of date as they plopped out in a gelatinous blob & tasted sour, asked for a blanket for our son's bed which never came, the toast I ordered for breakfast on the last day wasn't available so rather than letting me know, they just served my husband and son whilst giving me nothing, not even a "sorry we are out of that, would you like something else?" Shockingly bad service and when I spoke to the self proclaimed manager when I paid at the end our stay, he just looked at me blankly and walked away. Ruined the end of our much needed break away. Don't stay here, it's horrific.

Brilliant stay in the Shepard’s hut. The hut itself was gorgeous, spacious and everything you need for an overnight stay. Bed was very comfy. Had dinner in the pub and it was delicious, Penny’s pies were brilliant. And breakfast was also lovely. My wife and I don't get out to eat very often so whilst on holiday we were looking forward to a meal together in a nice country pub We booked for 7.30 and arrived on time. At first they put us on a small table crammed into a corner so tight that a wooden shelf behind me was digging into my shoulder. When the young girl came to take our drink order after 10 minutes she did move us to a larger table. The pub wasn't that full so why cram us into a corner in the first place. Having ordered drinks the waitress brought us one menu. Why do people make you share a menu when you both want to consider your choices without waiting for each other. I asked the table next to us if I could have the menu as they clearly had finished with it. The order was taken a full 30 minutes after we had entered the pub. My wife ordered a quiche chips and salad and I ordered a medium done steak and chips not exactly difficult food to prepare. I am diabetic and need to be careful about when I eat so by 8.40 when no food had arrived my blood sugar was crashing through the floor I asked the waitress how much longer the food would be. She came back five minutes later and apologised for the delay and said was because the steak was thick and being cooked to be medium. The owners of this establishment should be ashamed of themselves sending a young girl out to deliver such a pathetic excuse. I don't care how thick a steak is even if it came off a dinosaur you can burn it to a crisp in forty minutes. No that excuse just added insult to injury as the real reason for the delay was just poor management of the kitchen. As I said the pub wasn't really full so there was no reason for the delay When the food eventually arrived at 8.55pm a full hour and twenty five minutes after we entered the pub and fifty five minutes after we ordered it was clear that it had been rushed through because we were complaining. My steak had just been flashed on the grill and was bordering on rare in places and the pastry on the quiche was uncooked in parts. This wasn't high end difficult cuisine to prepare yet it was at best average to poor. The menu was extensive but pretentious in places, one the dishes was called the Bradley something or the other because Bradley Wiggins once ate there 9 years ago. The owners would do better to forget this clap trap and concentrate on the basics of hospitality ie serve good well cooked food within no more than 30 to 40 minutes of entering the establishment certainly not nearly an hour and a half. Do yourself a favour and go to one of the many other pubs in the area and avoid this one.

Our group of 4 had our evening meal here and were immediately taken by homely the place was with a very cosy atmosphere. There was a lovely wood burning fire adding to the cosines. The staff consisted of two young ladies who were very friendly and helpful. The food was excellent and 3 of us opted for the Home Made Pies. My wife had the Steak and Kidney and I had the Lamb and Ale Pie. They were absolutely superb. The Shortcrust Pastry was light and the pies were crammed with large chunks of meat. Accompanying the dish was delicious grave, home made chips and a selection of vegetables. Had we been staying in the area longer we would certainly have eaten here more often.

We had a meal here this evening. Whilst the food was OK we were appalled by the total lack of social distancing by a group of locals (around 10) sitting around one table and standing by the entrance door. Also a number of other customers were wondering around and going up to the bar with no respect for others eating. In the current climate this behaviour is totally unacceptable and the staff were unprepared to do anything about it. We were due to eat here again tomorrow evening but cancelled our booking. This behaviour is one of the reasons why the cora-virus is spreading rapidly.

My partner and myself had pre booked our meal a few days before as we knew we would be out walking all day and would want somewhere to eat on our return. The staff were very pleasant and the food was served in good time, initially we asked for the fish and chips, but, they did not have fish, so, we both ordered “Whitby wholetail scampi” as described in the menu. When it arrived we started to eat, only to find that we had been given the cheapest reconstituted, what,I can only describe as rubbish that money can buy. We did eat the meal as it was 8.30 in the evening and we were very hungry after being out all day, I saved one piece to ask the young lady if she new the difference between wholetail, reformed and reconstituted, the young lady was very pleasant and explained that she did not and the cook would only serve what the owners gave her to cook. Maybe the owners of the restaurant need a lesson on what they are serving to the customers. (I think there is a trade descriptions issue here somewhere). The young lady knocked us the price of the drinks off, but, this did not make the meal any better. We won’t be returning.

Stayed for one night whilst travelling on business - sick of chain hotels!Nice quiet location, not far from the M6. Room was clean, quiet and good value. Food was clearly homemade & a good standard for "pub grub" - not Brake Brothers rubbish. Staff were friendly, efficient & helpful. I had to leave early so couldn't stay for breakfast, but I was offered a breakfast box to takeaway which was great. I asked for fresh milk for the room which was happily provided. The only reason this isn't a five star review is that the Wifi was very poor. The staff were helpful in trying to resolve it but nothing could be done. This was made more frustrating as they had signs on the walls claiming "superfast" Wifi & I was told it was often troublesome, so not a one off. Despite this I would definitely stay again if in the area. Terrific fish pie!

My wife and I had an evening meal here. We were staying in a local cottage. Being mid-week in late September it was quiet (only half a dozen guests). For a small pub it has a very extensive menu. We had the steak and ale pie and the Hungarian goulash. Both were delicious, very well presented and large portions. Bring your appetite. Everything is freshly prepared and locally sourced where possible. The prices are reasonable, too. Do try this pub; as another reviewer said, a hidden gem, just off the A6 between Shap and Penrith. It is worth the detour off the M6.

After spending the day waking up Scafell Pike the next day, we decided rather than look elsewhere, we’d go back for seconds as it was so good. Sausage and Mash and scampi and chips this time, both delicious! We had to wait a bit longer for our meal, but it was a Saturday and we were warned this might be the case, so it wasn’t a problem. My husband and I both noticed that the loos were exceptionally clean! Not something I’d usually comment on, maybe it’s because the facilities at the campsite were a tad more basic that it stood out, but it was certainly appreciated!

There are many good things to say about the Strickand Arms, one of which is the warm welcome from owners and staff-everyone works hard to make your stay memorable. The food in the restaurant/pub bar is very good-home cooked and freshly prepared to order and, although the menu is rather large for such a small establishment, they seem to cope. We (myself and OH) stayed in one of the B&B; rooms and a group of friends stayed in the Big Brother house-their friendly name for the yurt type huts that house small groups. These separate units were very good-clean, reasonably priced, quite new and YHA ish. So far so good! The problem for us was the B&B; rooms which, considering the price charged, were in desperate need of improvement. The carpets need to be totally replaced as they are well past their sell by date! The en suite bathroom has carpet-very unhygienic! The furniture in the rooms would benefit from a lick of chalk paint to bring it into the 21st century! Little things that wouldn't cost too much in the scheme of things. However, the rooms were very clean and comfortable and, as previously mentioned, staff and owners were very welcoming! The area is beautiful and the Strickland Arms is in the centre of a pretty village with beautiful scenery and lovely walks.

We hadn't been here for a few months, as I remember we were a little disappointed last time, but hey, we thought we'd give it another try tonight. Not a good start though... the pint of real ale I ordered was slightly vinegary. Hmmm... not great at all. Sitting at the table next to the wood burner was cozy.We were looking forward to the two fresh chicken and leek pies we ordered. When the food arrived the Pies were indeed freshly cooked (rather than week-old tray-bake in many pubs when it comes to pies). The pie filling of sliced chicken breast, leeks and mushrooms in a creamy sauce was lovely. But both pies could have done with a little longer in the oven, because both pastry-bottoms were undercooked. The chips were good and a mix of four types of veg' welcome. The meals came with a small jug of very strongly-scented beef/lamb-smelling gravy, which didn't compliment a chicken pie? ... a chicken based gravy would have been more appropriate.Sadly a second ale was also slightly vinegary which meant we were put off staying longer. Some improvements needed for us before we rush back.

Nice country pub tucked away down a narrow winding road about a mile from the main road and 15 mins from Penrith. Nice welcoming atmosphere, good beers on tap.The menu is extensive-but try the homemade pies which are the best I have had in many a year. Service can be a bit slow, but otherwise this place is near perfect.

Having a few days break in the area & just dropped in for an evening meal, must say the meals are absolutely delicious, the steak pie was the best I have ever had & all 4 of us really enjoyed our meals, although we had to wait a while for the food to come ( perhaps because end of season, a little off the main track & not many staff, ( lovely & attentive by the way) It didn't spoil it for us. Could do with stocking drinks for the non- alcohol drinkers a little better & perhaps a little background music in the dining area to improve on the ambience especially when not many dining, that been said worth a visit for the food quality. Would return again if in Newby again.

Anton and Penny are great hosts. We have just returned from a 3 night stay in Dolly's Logbyre. Wonderful ! The beds are so comfortable and the log bunkhouse is fantastic, with everything you need. Highly recommend, especially for a family break or with a group of friends. The food in the pub was great. We will certainly be returning and can not wait to visit again !

We have stayed here a few times now after first coming across it as part of a coast to coast cycle trip and we will return time and time again, as the welcome in this traditional rural pub is always warm and friendly. If you want a nice, plush room then those are available above the pub, and if you want a more fun and unusual but equally comfortable experience then book out one of three logyurts (hand-made by the landlord, the ever-chirpy Anton!) which have hot showers, good quality linen and comfortable mattresses. Anton knows and looks after his real ales, of which there is always at least 2 on offer - perfect for drinking in either the front or rear beer gardens, in the main bar or in the cyclist's heaven of what can only be described as a shrine to Team Sky, complete with Sir Bradley Wiggins's signed and framed yellow jersey, personally presented to landlord and landlady Anton and Penny following the visit of Team Sky during the Tour of Britain in 2012, when Mark Cavendish, Brad, Bernie Eisel and Sir Dave Brailsford devoured Penny's delicious home-made meals and even felt compelled to write to Penny following the visit to ask for her recipes! Breakfast is made to order, with fresh bread, orange juice and cereals on offer before you order a delicious cooked breakfast however you want it!Dog-friendly areas in the pub (and equally, areas where they aren't allowed to accommodate non-dog lovers and diners, though food is also served in the dog-friendly areas) and similarly can be accommodated if you want to stay over. So, whether you are a family, on your own in the Penrith\Lakes area for business or sport, or whether you are a soaking wet, muddy, cold group of cyclists, I couldn't recommend this pub any higher. Thanks for your hospitality, Anton, Penny & Staff and we will be back! Alan & Kerry and Stockton Wheelers.

I had heard many great things about The Strickland Arms and in particular how welcoming Anton and Penny were.I finally made my debut visit on a cycling jolly that was also coinciding with my birthday and all that i can say is Wow Wow Wow.Everything was perfect from start to finish. We stayed in the new log byres which were really spacious and very comfortable, could get used to this glamping lark over my tent. The real ales were top notch, boondoggle all the way and the food is out of this world. This was my first visit but it certainly won't be the last, can't recommend it highly enough.

We love this place snd visit every year with a large group of us. Anton and Penny are great hosts and if you are looking for a pub with great beer and food, this is your place. Accommodation is superb both in the pub and in the yurts, ideal for groups of cyclists or even just groups of friends or family wanting to get away.

I stayed at the Strickland Arms while visiting the Lake District for a wedding, some friends and I booked the yurt (round wooden house) to share - it was cosy, comfortable and very affordable, especially as it included a fantastic cooked breakfast!! The yurt was warm, well insulated and nicely furnished including comfy custom-made beds, there are spacious ensuite bathrooms with towels provided, and Anton (owner) gave us a tour round the new yurts that he's currently building. Very friendly and a great place to stay for a family, group of friends etc.

Nice meal, friendly service and good real ale - what could be better. The steak and ale pie is the best I have had. The steak is top quality, well cooked and tender and lots of gravy is provided, which is thick and rich, a real experience to recommend.

Visited with my husband as we were staying nearby. We were greeted by very friendly lady behind the bar and we enjoyed the food. There were a few flies encountered during our visit however I think that is just something that goes with the area. As a village pub it is a very nice place for food and we would recommend a visit.

The food at the Strickland Arms is invariably very good, but it is gastro pub (expensive) prices and the service does not live up to it. You can have lengthy periods where staff do not check up on you and we ran out of water and wine, though the staff are very pleasant. We were upstairs and there were 2 dogs allowed in what I regard as a strict dining area, not part of the pub. I grew up in the country and dogs in pubs are part of life, but I don't expect them in a restaurant area where I am paying London upmarket prices for the experience.

We enjoyed a meal here - extensive choice far beyond your usual pub food. Surely something to suit all tastes. My black pudding and goats cheese starter was followed by baked king prawns - all very tasty. The pub has a great atmosphere and friendly staff. Caters well for parties of cyclists doing the C2C. Rooms and a yurt.

Food is very good. Extremely extensive menu. Service was very good but the atmosphere was a bit lacking as there were very few people in the pub. However, this suits me better as I don't like crowded pubs.

This is a very well-known pub/restaurant and we were delighted with the excellent food and beer. Two of us chose from the daily specials menu - Sunday lunches. One of us has particular dietry problems and these were taken into account by the chef, and a great lunch resulted. I will certainly visit this pub again and don't hesitate to recommend it!

The atmosphere was a bit lacking but that's probably because we had our dinner a bit early. That said, the only drawback was that they were already out of some of their pies; I'm guessing they do a weekend stocking perhaps? To my mind, if a place is popular for something ie pies; you really shouldn't be that short of them :)However, the food was great. The pies we had were very good but the chicken jalfrezi pie should maybe come with a heat warning. The goats cheese and black pudding crostini starter was so good I seriously considered cancelling the pie and getting two more of those. Was lovely - looking forward to my next visit.

I've been to this pub many times whilst visiting and staying in the area. The nutrition balance in the meals have got to a pretty bad state. Humans need greens! I ordered scampi and chips and my plate was 95% brown with over fried chips and scampi with a hand full of peas. Really disappointed. But the atmosphere in the pub is lovely and they have excellent beers. So if you're looking for a meal with no nutritious value and a nice variety of booze then this is the place.

I know the Strackland Arms quite well and have been going there for over 10 years. It's in a friendly village where everyone says "hello!".The pub is small and cosy with a wood burning stove. You can eat in there or in the separate dining room. Dogs are very welcome in the pub but not in the dinning room, which is standard practice. The locals and management and staff are very welcoming and you will be included in the conversation as a matter of routine. The menu is quite broad with some pub favorites alongside some original dishes, all prepared by Penny and her team upstairs. My particular favorites are the Curries (as hot as you dare or mild if you prefer) and the Cumberland Sausage. The Cumberland is excellent and superior to many I have tried elsewhere. There is a beer garden out front where you can eat and drink in summer too. A nice relaxing spot in the middle of a real farming community.Accommodation is also available.

We were staying in a nearby cottage and found this pub on line. Such a friendly pub and very attentive friendly staff. We had a few meals there and all were delicious, steaks and gammon were really tender and fish was really tasty, pies were beautiful and served with proper gravy! We ate in the bar as we had two small dogs with us. A proper pub!

Went in on Saturday 10th January, there was 17 of us ! Just turned up out of the blue, never fazed the landlord, very warm, friendly & a super cosy open fire. Asked about Sunday lunch & he happily agreed that they could cater for all of us, we gave him our order, there & then, & agreed lunch would be at 2pm the next day, we walked in at 1.30 & were sat in an area that was all ready for us, & at 2pm prompt, our delicious Sunday lunch was served. The food was fabulous, & including a fabulous home made dessert, worked out at around £11 per head. Fabulous ! Will definitely be back

What more can you want? Great beer and excellent food. The team working there looked after us really well. There were 11 blokes there Saturday night and we all had a wide choice of food and there wasn't much to clear off the plates. Very good prices and if you are a vegetarian a whole page of options to consider. Also very good ales to finish the night off with. These guys go that extra mile (or two). Cheers.

My wife and I hosted two friends to dinner here saturday evening. The main bar area of the pub is attractive and well preserved. The dining area is presumably a late addition, structurally OK but very kitchy with a lot of kitchy/clashing decor. Now for the food: Two of us had soup which was very nice. Thereafter a very long delay for the mains: The meals were delivered on cold plates; The lamb chops were described as good, the veges less so (new potatoes not fresh-tasting and the carrots were half-cooked), the lemon sole was very small, ldry and rather tasteless, ditto for the new potatoes and carrots, the fish pie was very good as were the accompanying chips and veg, the pork fillet with creamy mushroom sauce was described as "pretty good". For the quality and presentation of the food and the price charged this food was average. We wont be back!

This pub was recommended to us by someone on our camp site. The service was excellent and the menu was quite extensive, considering the pub is situated in a very quiet location. We went there quite early on on a Thursday evening and the place soon startedto fill up, which tells you that it is popular. The food wasvery good. Mine needed a little more seasoning, but my husband had the steak pie and said the meat was delicious. The pricerice was very reasonable. The vegetables were all fresh.

Stayed here to break our journey from Central Scotland to the Peak District. Had a very pleasant chalet type room at the rear of the property with easy access. Enjoyed a drink and an evening meal in the bar with our wee dog. We both had the sirloin steak with was generous in proportion and quite tasty.Staff friendly as were the locals. Would definitely return.

We dined in Bustro 1871 as part of a short break holiday at the Appleby Manor Hotel. What a lovely break this was. Our first after the Spring and Summer lockdown. The food was really good and the waiters attentive. Appleby Manor itself is a delightful hotel full of old world charm. We are returning there again for my wife's birthday in October. I shall again dine in Bistro 1871 as well as sampling the gourmet restaurant at the hotel on our second night.
