Classic English unspoilt pub serving real ales. Lots of character, both the pub and staff! Good food. This pub is ideal for walking groups, you can do circular walks - south through Whitwell village or North through Hitchwood.

Great beer, locals favourite, if you don’t enjoy the landlord it’s because you don’t have a sense of humour!

Disgusting. Very rude landlord and unwelcoming. Bad mannered patrons. Unclean and dated. Won't be coming back.

The main aspect of any visit to this pub is the superb quality real ale which makes this pub a regular winner of CAMRA awards and deservedly so. I would happily spend a few hours here and if you don't want to drive the bus stop is right outside (although an infrequent service, so a little planning is required in advance). Popular with walkers, cyclists and locals alike, the exterior is a little dowdy and the interior likewise, but the staff and associated dog and cat are friendly and welcoming. Food is served and is a worthy accompaniment to the excellent beer. A large collection of pump clips adorn the ceilings of the bar for those with an interest in the large selection of beers that have been served here. A little difficult to get to but well worth the trip.

Tiny village pub with car park and beer garden at the back . Not very busy on a weekday lunchtime, just a few cyclists and ramblers enjoying the sunshine. Really nice sandwiches, interesting local real ales , superbly unmodernised and unspoilt .

Just popped into this pub to ask for directions, from the road it looks like a typical country pub so I wasn't expecting anything really. However, we stayed for a quick drink and will make a point of coming back whenever we're nearby as this pub has a) an insanely large selection of obscure beers, b) nice wine, c) friendly landlord, d) a cat, e) Spurs memorabilia and f) a slightly wacky, unpretentious vibe that you can't fake - you can tell this pub has been here for ages and has built up loads of atmosphere. It wasn't expensive either. Apparently they do food too, I look forward to trying it next time.

This fabulous pub has been my family`s favourite for nearly 3 decades. Superb beer, food, events and ambience.Today though, I was `greeted` by a miserable ,rude `regular` who actually spoilt my day : ( I left without ordering at the bar. i do hope this is not a bad apple?.......

I love popping in here whenever I can. The beer selection is fantastic, and the regulars are always entertaining! I haven't eaten here yet, but I'm told the wild food nights are excellent.

Apparently this quaint little pub lays on a special menu once a month. On this occasion they had game on the menu. I particularly enjoyed the canapés and elderflower gin and the bakewell tart for dessert. Service was great, very personable. Will definitely return.

Easy to see why this is a Camra favourite. No frills pub with a decent selection of real ales on tap. As mentioned by other reviewers Wednesday night is Pizza and Pasta night. My starter of melon and parma ham was deliscious and I thoroughly enjoyed the pasta and salmon. The edge was taken off the evening when the barmaid had her small dog stood on top of the bar being petted by a couple of other diners! Not the sort of thing I would expect to see in a food pub.

If you want fancy Gastropub with cute phrases stencilled on the artificial beams, this is not the place for you. However, if you would like to experience a real country pub, with great beer, good wine, give 'The Strath' a try. The pasta/pizza on Wednesday evenings is amazing. Again, nothing artificial or over-ambitious, but truly authentic home cooked Italian food, offering a different choice of three pastas each week, or custom made pizzas, served with complementary salad and garlic bread - and the price isn't fancy either.

This is a gem of a pub the sort we are loosing all too often these days! If you crave great beer welcoming locals and some banter wit a beer this place is the best. The once a month Wild Food Night with guest chef The Country Bumpkin is must and as a family we go to most. a fixed menu 4-5 course for just £24 of what ever is in season just fantastic value for food with a difference in a great atmosphere ! On a Wednesday they have a Pizza Pasta night just grey value and Guest Chef Leno has treated us to many a fantastic pasta dish a salad and Garlic bread starter for just £8.50 just can't be bettered!

We were recommended to go to the Strathmore on a Wednesday night as it is pizza and pasta night. What a fantastic recommendation that was ! I will never be able to go to any of the pizza chains again. The pub is unpretentious ,very friendly and welcoming. The simple salad with garlic bread which is served as an appetiser is very refreshing and tasty. As for the pizza the base is a perfectly baked thin crust and you have the choice of about 10 different toppings at no extra cost. My husband who is a real ale drinker was impressed by the quality of flavour of the house bitter. It was our first visit but it won't be the last !

Went to our first wild food night at this country pub. Not sure its your typical country pub but its nice enough with a warm welcome. The menu changes throughout the year as mother natures offerings come in. The food was absolutely fantastic. Don't be put off by some on the offerings. Just try them you will be pleasantly surprised. Good well kept ale too. I think we must have worked our way through most of the ales on tap. The evening starts around 7.30 and lasts till closing time. Highly recommended not just for wild food but for the ale which changes constantly. 3006 different beers from 656 different breweries at the last count.

We visited in late winter when it wasn't possible to sit in the garden but the atmosphere in the pub was just how it should be - friendly and very accommodating. The landlord knows his beer and is a great host. The beers when we went were good and varied. The "house bitter" is brewed especially for the pub and was excellent. Special evenings are advertised on their website and there are barbecues in the summer. A real must if you are in the Hitchin/ Welwyn/Luton/Stevenage area.

No frills. And none necessary. The Strathmore Arms is a real rarity, which is sad to say. This is a pub where beer comes first. Friendly service and a homely atmosphere, but most importantly a really fantastic selection of beers. There were seven bitters on when I visited, and two proper ciders. Really excellent.

We always enjoy popping along for some excellent, regularly rotating real ales and meals at this excellent pub in an idyllic setting south of Hitchin. Its handily located on the bus route from Hitchin to Welham Green (the Arriva 304 service), allowing a visit to be planned using trains (to Hitchin, St Albans, or Welham Green stations). Lunchtime food is served during 12pm - 2pm (Tuesday to Saturday). On Fridays and Saturdays evening meals are served between 6pm-9pm, when a specials board operates as well as the normal midweek menu (often including the recommended ham egg and chips).Regular barbecues (especially on Bank Holidays) are organised, and there will be 2 beer festivals this year - Thur 21st - Sun 24th June and Thur 27th - Sun 30th Sept 2012.The Strathmore Arms has been awarded numerous awards by CAMRA.More basic than some, its an honest, straightforward place.Dartboard and bar skittle table and a pleasant beer garden with plenty of parking complement the refreshment.A popular place to break a ride, cycle or walk.See their website for beer list, news, menus and directions (also for details of speciality nights, such as the Italian evenings);http://www.thestrathmorearms.co.ukCurrently, no food is available on Sundays except during the BBQ season (April-September). Ring ahead to be sure.

This used to be a good shop but quality of food has been deteriorating. Had takeaway cod & chips. Large cod portions turned out to be paper thin, heavily coated with batter. The fish was over cooked, and as the portions were very thin, they became hard & dry. Quality of chips was poor too as there were a lot of small dry chips which were inedible. Similar experience in the recent past so its not a one off experience. Will not visit again.

The hotel was built in a great design. Quite neighbouring and surrounded by green fields. I found it was not very easy to navigate and the corridor is small and narrow in some areas.

Best ghost pub ever. Went in, walked around, nobody in, no bar staff, all lights on, beer pumps all lit up but nobody home. We were there for about 3 minutes and then walked out. What a waste
