The worst ‘Sunday Roast’ we have ever had. We wanted to treat ourselves and not have to cook, as we do on most days. This was horrible ! We opted for the self-service carvery. The meat was sliced by the chef just inside the open front door (which I didn’t think was a good location) and served onto cold plates. We served ourselves with unappetising- looking roast potatoes and the only other vegetable on display; parsnips and carrot mix. The container of what might have been a cabbage and other vegetable mix had a few remnants at the bottom. The final dish was empty. We took our ‘meal’ to a table and for some reason a waitress brought us a dish of dry, burnt and overcooked cauliflower cheese. Only when we started eating did we discover that the few vegetables we had were barely warm, and having been placed on a cold plate were almost cold. The cutlery on our table had been placed in a container with the blades of the knifes and prongs of the forks facing upwards. They must have been placed like that by someone holding the ends which would go in our mouths with food. Ugh ! Final insult was the 10% ‘service charge’. What service ? It was a self-service carvery. When asked ‘how is the meal ?’ we told the waitress how disappointed we were. All she said was ‘sorry’. What more could she do ? We didn’t want our meals to be microwaved, or be brought another cold meal with cutlery that had been handled. That’s one we will never visit again.

First off was so happy they could fit a large group of 17 last minute. But upon arriving realised the table was split..and to be told with no care...well that's all I've got!!! And a walk away. So we got on and went to the very nice self service carvery.was beautiful fresh cooked.amazing. Didn't really get anyone up to see if we were OK with our food which was a shame . We did choose to go to the bar for drinks separately. The pudding..which unfortunately was the most burnt hardened chocolate brownie were ever seen.the children couldn't bite it.was also a shame. We did think that to be charged an automatic service charge where there was no service was a bit bit odd. And finally ,we all paid at the bar and when the last few left...we were called back rather embarrassingly voiced over all whom was eating there that we had a 150 pound bill still to pay.which was awful to try and go through it with the poor girls behind the bar.they said the manager had gone home and split the tables bills incorrectly. Nice dinner awful pudding.not enough staff and unfriendly manager.

Terrible - from the moment we arrived we were literally ignored by the waiting staff, 3 of them stood huddled around the till, one then took off , we had to race down the restaurant presuming she was taking us to our table, no interaction whatsoever .. ordered drinks then food, pretty basic requests 1 smashed burger and 2 fish and chips … the fish was inedible due to the hardened batter, my fish was hardly touched, said to the waitress who apologised but that was as far as it went, no discount off the bill - read the bloody room people, the restaurant is empty yet still it’s terrible service and even worse food … never again, I wouldn’t eat that standard of food served at home let alone pay a premium for substandard food and service !!

Totally dreadful staff and attitude yet again.... We gave it a second chance after going last year and being told they were too busy to even serve us a drink on a Sunday lunchtime at about 3.30 pm- well after the lunch rush. We had arranged to meet up with people at 4.00pm and yet again they refused to even serve us a drink! It's a PUB.... this means a PUBLIC HOUSE which is a name it doesn't qualify for as the public clearly are not welcome. Don't go, don't even think about having a drink!!

Lovely pub, beautiful setting but absolutely dreadful food. In hindsight I should have complained at the time because for the price we paid we shouldn't have been served a dried out overcooked piece of fish with equally dried out and overcooked potatoes. I would say go for a drink but avoid the food.

Great Sunday lunch but service was awful. Got seated, 20 mins later got asked what drinks we would like. After another 15 mins we went and got the carvery as no one had taken our order. Our drinks arrived after we had finished our meal and even then 2 was missing.

On appearances the Rusty Gun is quite inviting. My wife, myself and our dog pulled up hoping for a lunch time sausage sandwich. Success! Ordered 2 delicious sounding sausage sandwiches and drinks. We sat outside as we had the dog with us. We were overcharged for our food ( rectified without any fuss, thank you ) although we had to wait a day for the refund to be credited. It was as we waited that we started having reservations. The garden furniture was filthy. I mean dirty and grubby filthy. The gazebo housed some ropey looking furniture and the cutlery for the outside tables. It was messy. Unloved. Next to our bench sticking out of the floor was a metal “dog tie”. It was hidden by the loose pebbles and really very dangerous. Next, a table next to ours were served their food ( delicious looking burgers) but unfortunately their waitress spilled some chips all over the table and bench. She offered to replace them and did. But she left them there. For their entire meal. She came out at least 3 times to replace food or check on things but just left the food on the bench!! Another patron picked half up to feed to his dog but the dog didn’t fancy the rest. Our food was average. Sausages inexplicably chopped into tiny pieces smeared with mustardy mayonnaise in warm toasted ( maybe stale ) bread and a very sweet onion chutney. We were hungry and we ate it but I wouldn’t recommend it. The place lacked love and attention. Its hygiene is a concern. The attention to detail was lacking. It feels like it’s had better days but the money has run out. We may have just been there on a bad day with a new staff. I’d give them the benefit of the doubt. The location is great. However I wouldn’t make it a destination venue. Thanks for having us but it’s unlikely we’ll be back.

we usually just head to wetherspoons for a mid week dinner but decided to go somewhere nicer as a treat. the pub itself is beautiful, good location and very sweet little farm shop. front of house are lovely too. the food however was (sorry to say) awful, bland and dry, which was so disappointing as everything else was perfect! the menu also has potential to be great too, the food quality just needs tweaking.

Really lovely place, just one small thing. The wooden plater that our burgers were served on were too small so food was coming of the end and running over side when we ate, we had no room to move things around on ‘plate’ (for instance if you want to take off burger bun etc) so bigger serving platter (or just a plate would be better)

I had booked a table of 15 for my partners birthday as a surprise and so being a large group we had to pre order which is absolutely fine but you would think knowing such a large group is coming on they would have had the staff to reflect that. We had a young girl who did great but I really felt for her as there were quite a few things that went wrong. As soon as we walked in to sit down we quickly realised the table wasn’t set up for enough people which only worked out because one person hadn’t turned up on the day. I had to cancel one of our pre orders the day before and another on the day due to sickness and my step dad’s meal (who attended) got cancelled by mistake for some reason so his main came out 20 minutes after everyone else’s, he is insulin dependent and so this caused an issue. The chicken schnitzel comes with a fried egg on top and all 4 of us who ordered one sent it back as the white of the egg wasn’t fully cooked, the chicken was also pretty dry. We had to wait quite a while for desserts to come out and when they did there was an extra one which we didn’t order which we then had to pay for. The pub itself is really cute and has a real countryside feel but it’s also dead quiet as there’s no background music which makes for a strange atmosphere at times. One thing we really appreciated however was the fact that my sister is vegan and also doesn’t like mushrooms so the vegan mushroom burger wouldn’t have been an option for her and they cooked a different vegan burger for her especially to accommodate our booking. Overall a nice place and the food is okay, a little more organisation would have made a huge difference to our evening.

Ate here for lunch after a very wet 10k walk up past a 14th century chapel, a short distance behind the restaurant then through Hitch Wood and Wain Wood & Back. We set off from the car park at 10am so we were ready for the food when we came back. There is a great selection of food and beer for all tastes. I had Frickles (deep fried pickles) 😋 with mustard to start followed by a medium t-bone (nice chunky chips) and the cookie dough desert. Washed down with Rusty Gun Ale. Good portions. To be honest we probably needed to do a 30k walk to burn it off! Nice & cosy atmosphere. Probably a bit more than we would usually spend but I think the value is good and we did properly pig out - you get what you pay for in the end. 👍

We used to love coming to the Rusty gun regularly but sadly we won’t be back after our last meal. Our starter was ok but the main and my pudding was really quite bad. We both had chicken schnitzel which was so tough I couldn’t really cut into it. I also have an intolerance to raw onion so they didn’t give me any salad at all which wouldn’t have been very difficult to do! My cookie dough pudding was also so overcooked that the spoon didn’t really go into it and it was so chewy I couldn’t eat it. We also had black bits on more than one piece of cutlery so all in all not a good experience and it makes me sad that we won’t be returning as it’s such a nice venue.

Sadly, a group of 8 of us waited over 2 hours for our food. On asking at 9pm if our food would be soon, we were told it was being plated that second. At 9.15 we were still waiting. We all had steaks, no one asked for any more than rare and all steaks arrived well done and somehow, absolutely everything on all plates was cold. We had to ask for more drinks, no one asked on our food despite the restaurant not being busy at all. In fairness, 2 steaks were removed from the bill as an apology, but sadly a very very disappointing meal all round.

A booking for 10. Really hard work booking because you have to pre order food. Online booking form that you can send a link to your guests to add their food choices. No one was successful. In the end I emailed a list. Table for 2pm which we were unable to use till 2.20. If I had not asked I think I would still be waiting. Very annoying that they had no draught bitter. Or rather they did but the cellar man hadn’t got his barrel organised and settled in time to switch over. Only bottled. A little warning once the waitress had started the pre order ball rolling (Sunday lunch ) those having carvery ,which you collect yourself, would have finished their meals by the time the meals from the kitchen would have arrived. However, enjoyed our meals, staff were pleasant and I would go back.

Firstly booked a table for 2 and first impressions were not the best, we were sat in-between 2 families with young children so impacted the conversation we could have but okay not the end of the world, I would of liked to have sat away from families though. The place has its old charm of feeling like a hobbit house as you have to duck if you're taller then 5ft but it's quirky and feels welcoming inside, 1 thing to note is the front door has a wonky handle and has been for sometime now which you would of expected fixed for a place that charges so much! We decided to order some nibbles while we sat chatting and to have a drink before we ordered food but before our nibbles even arrived we were asked 3 times if we were ready to order, to the point I just said I'll stop talking and pick something to eat, really made me feel as if they were trying to churn us out. When our nibbles arrived (smoked sausage and frickles) the sausage was just thinly sliced, dry and burnt, I would argue it was not smoked as I could taste 0 smokiness it just tasted like they left it on the grill until the skin went black, the ketchup was also a Chutney, Frickles were nice but you would struggle to screw up a deep fried gherkin. I ordered the burger and my friend had the wrap, while both tasted nice I can assure you the burger was not a smashed burger as advertised. It didn't have any of the crunch or caramilisation you should have on the outside and edge of the pattie and wasn't juicy like you should have from a true smashed burger. It contains back bacon which IMO is just wrong in a burger and being flaccid in texture just makes the whole thing have the same texture which is soft and soggy, no crispy bacon, no crunch on the burger and the bun itself just fell to pieces as it wasn't toasted & so the sauce soaks in and destroys it. As mentioned it had a nice flavour but the menu misleads you and at almost £19, I expect a quality burger, especially when Hitchin has some very good burger joints around! Spent just shy of £60 for a burger, wrap, 2 nibbles and 2 drinks during lunch time on a rainy Wednesday, pub was half empty. For the quality it was over priced and unfortunately while the location and staff are nice and polite (apart from rushing us) the food has gone downhill, with a menu that wants to be fancy but doesn't deliver & borders misleading! It's ashame but I wont be back in a hurry.

We booked a table for 8 people. our waitress was very pleasant and showed us to our seats. Was shown the wine list that was wildly over priced for average wine. I ordered the baby back ribs that tasted like the cheap frozen ones from the supermarket. For the price I was not impressed. My mother in law and sister ordered baked fish with roasted new potatoes and pea skidmark. The food only coved half the plate she was left hungry and unimpressed. My daughter had the kids burger with chips that came out with the most food on it. She was happy. My wife had the steak that was £27.95 so she had hoped it to be of good standard when it arrived it was luke warm, gristly and chewy. Nowhere near good enough. My sister in law and cousin had the burger And both said it was OK but not worth £18.45 My father in law had the cheddar and beef pie. He said it was very nice. Just could have had a bigger portion. Puddings My wife and sister in law had the brownie £7.95 When it arrived it was a good portion. They both said it didn't taste like a brownie more like a chocolate bread pudding. Not very good one at that. My mother in law had the sticky Toffee pudding. Good portion size and tasted lovely she said. This was our family Christmas gathering, so we chose the Rusty Gun as a special treat. It is expensive but we’ve been happy to pay the premium in the past for the quality of food and service. Oh dear! It took 50 minutes to get our food and when it did arrive 3 of us got cold sweet potato fries. They then brought us one portion of hot fries to share between us. My brother in laws ribs were just about warm. Then the desserts came and we had to send one back because the bowl had a huge chip out of it. Only to then discover that they had served us barely warm custard with the crumble. We’ve been before and always enjoyed our meal but Sunday was frankly rubbish. We won’t be going back, instead taking our custom to the Orange Tree in Hitchin. The food is better, cheaper and the service is always good. After sending an email, at their request, I’ve not received a reply. I think that sums it up really and confirms what we felt at the time. Nobody at The Rusty Gun cares whether they give good service or not. They still haven’t replied to my original email I sent a week ago, so I’ve sent another. Will they ever reply? That remains to be seen! I don’t know what’s going on at the Rusty Gun but it appears the wheels have come off. They didn’t reply to either of my emails. I think that about sums it up. Enough said!

This is a wonderful pub for Sunday Roast. It is set up as a carvery and meats are excellent. The chef doing the carving pays attention to the customer and ensures they get what they like, done the way they like. The vegetables were tasty and well prepared. Of course, the atmosphere is traditional with a cozy feel. I wish I could give a 5 star rating. The 4 star rating is based on the service we received. It took a long time to get our drink order taken, a very long time to get cocktails. Server had to be reminded to bring water to the table after the first request. We requested the bill and our server disappeared. I had to go and find her and she was sitting engaged with her phone. She was quick in response when I said we really wanted to pay now. Really lovely pub in the countryside. A good varied selection on the menu - really tasty food, the service was warm and welcoming. A really good selection of wine too - and bonus points for the pigs that are on site that you can feed!

Food not as nice as it used to be. Mostly ok except giant portion of chips is offputting and chicken tasted of nothing. Crumble topping just tasted nasty as if either rancid or made with cheap margarine. Both virtually uneaten and waiting staff didn’t bother to ask why.

We had Christmas dinner (2023) here. It was very disappointing, while costing a bomb. The starter was duck from a packet that was kept partly lukewarm. I have no doubt that it was this that made me ill that night and the following day. The turkey itself was fairly tasty and succulent; though we got very little of it. The roast beef was inedible - overcooked and dry as a bone. As for vegetables, there were no greens, except for Brussels sprouts. Note: When we went up to get our food, carvery-style, there was no meat, so we had to wait for them to bring it to our table. We were waiting quite a while and that’s why it wasn’t realistic to ask for more turkey.

If you’re going for a carvery, don’t bother. No potatoes, no parnisps, no veg…the only side that was ready was cauliflower cheese. We didn’t know this ^ until we had our meat served, sat waiting for 10-15 minutes for the sides until we gave up. Staff were polite, but had no idea how long the sides would be. Clearly no manager leading the team or looking after their customers. Very disappointing.

Went for a roast on Sunday wish we hadn’t bothered, meat and yorkies served then found there were no roast pots or veg ready! Staff were polite but didn’t know when the pots would be ready!

My wife and I were lucky to get the reservation on new year eve here for a Sunday carvery. The food was a little disappointing due to the roast potatoes being cold. I made the chef aware and he identified that someone had turned the burner off, that was holding them. The chef quickly got me new hot ones, but my wife had to wait for hers. I love crunchy veg, but these were extremely hard.

Firstly I'll start with the positive, its still a wonderful pub, such character and charming with good bar service and drink options. Afraid after many years of loving coming here I will only be visiting now for drinks, because I do love the pub and...

We came on Boxing Day for our belated family Xmas Day. Sadly, the Festive Menu was not up to scratch. My dad ordered the pork Christmas burger which was so burnt, it was like a charcoal pattie - he couldn't eat it. Thank you for removing the charge from our bill. Two of us ordered the slow cooked shin of beef. It wasn't slow cooked at all though, and was so tough, fatty and rubbery that it was also inedible. Thank you for allowing us to instead have a turkey carvery instead, which was what my son had ordered. The carvery was actually very good and we all enjoyed eating that, after all. The service was OK, and it was nice that you sorted out the food/bill issues for us reasonably. Thank you. However, there was no atmosphere at all, no music playing at all... it was dead quiet, not what we had imagined or hoped for for a Boxing Day nosh-up, sadly.

We arrived promptly at our allocated time and were shown to our table close to a window. Our aperitifs followed soon after. The spacious rustic restaurant was fairly full and there was a warm and friendly atmosphere - not spoilt by loud music or unruly children. We chose to have one large glass of wine each and there was a good choice. Our smoked duck starters were delicious. Next, we were called to the carvery where we received a generous portion of moist and tasty turkey with stuffing and helped ourselves to a wide choice of vegetables. To conclude, I had an almond tart with a poached pear and ice cream and my friend had a huge cheese board. Excellent food, efficiently served by friendly staff in a festive atmosphere. We were very pleased with our decision to have our Christmas Lunch at the Rusty Gun!

Mushroom casulette was just 2 basic mushrooms with a spoon of what tasted like Smokey baked beans on top. Yuk. Baked camenbert was cold as were the ribs, chips were ok and potatoe skins were good and hot but hardly any topping. Wine was the best part of the meal! Felt robbed when paying the bill for over £100.

Decent place. Food can be a bit hit and miss, as can the staff but interesting for the kids and lovely setting.

Had the carvery, very good range of meats and vegetables. Very good quick service. A couple of improvements, dinner plates could be warmed and the vegetables cooked a bit more so they were softer.

Booked a table for 3 persons from 19:30-21:30. We had broccoli soup which was good. We had 3 different main dishes. One of them, the steak, was not so good. It should have been medium rare but it was too well done. We had 1 desert and that was fine. By 21 o'clock they already ask us if we had finished because they wanted to close. As soon as we where outside the staff closed the doors and drove, even before we had finished a sigaret, already home. We were the last ones leaving, that felt a little unwelcome.

We have been coming to the Rusty Gun for a number of years for our Christmas Family meal. I must reinforce that the set up this year was superb - the service was superior to previous years, as was the atmosphere of staff and the place. The food was delicious - although the meat a little dry. All 16 of us had a tremendous experience - gone from pack us in over two sittings to a real fine dining experience - thank you James, Ash and all for making our Christmas Lunch one of the best xx

We were put on a table for 4 and there was 5 of us so it was a bit cramped. I feel the amount of money we spent that a bit more room to enjoy it would be better. Also a bit of Xmas music in the background would have been nice.

Disappointed visit, haven’t been for a while but service was poor, visited on v Boxing Day and some tables got crackers and Christmas hats but others didn’t. No choice when booking for Xmas menu or standard menu. Pub is now quite dated, toilets are pretty disgusting and staff are not helpful

DEFINITELY NOT RECOMMENDED. Boxing Day treat for 10 of us and we had taken into account that it was the day after Christmas but it was soul less not a cracker in sight. The food was appalling. Lamb pies with three chunks of lamb, bitter batter on the fish, one measly slice of goat’s cheese on two leaves of lettuce for £10.95. The service was confusing and all over the place. Nobody had any alcohol one person was drinking water everybody had two courses but dividing the bill between 4 couples and two children (one of which had jacket potato) it was £80 per couple!!!! Sorry but would go anywhere but to eat. The whole thing was shoddy.

the potato skins were dry, hardly any cheese, what there was - was crispy, hardly any bacon, cocktail was awful served in a tumbler with loads of ice so hardly any cocktail - no one asked us how our meal was, no one offered any extras, had to ask for mayo, had to find someone to get a coffee - will not be returning

Sunday carvery meat was very chewy and the veg was disgusting. It was a treat for the mum in law just before Christmas. Staff discounted the meals in what would have been an expensive meal. Puds were ok, same as anywhere over priced. . It's a shame . I might have known ...Carvery is usually poor . I expected better from a country pub .
