Nice place and food and service good. Pretty boring atmosphere though and after we paid our bill and were leaving we called out goodbye and no one answered. We've been before and loved the little shop in the corner but it was disappointing this time.

Me an my friend went for a Christmas lunch on (27/11/24) we both were disappointed, the turkey was slices( I'd call it plastic turkey, not carved from carcass), we both agreed, one carrot cut in half, one potato cut into four, skinny little parsnips, few brussels, pig's in blanket, frozen brussels, no greens,no cranberry sauce we had to have jam!!!, as for the pudding not sure what it was, three custard like balls, served in a soup bowl, smothered in a very very tart source. We both were very disappointed in our Christmas lunch!!...

The vegetarian options on the menu were very disappointing. One of the side dishes on the menu was 'skin-on fries' which I ordered with an omelette. However, what appeared on the plate was french fries that appear to be made from pre-processed potatoes and when I queried their appearance on my plate - I was told that this is all their supplier had sent them! When we asked what the letters 'ngic' meant after one dish, we were told the ng stood for no gluten, but she did not know what the 'ic' stood for. I suggest staff need better training.

I visited the RG with my partner, mum and springer spaniel on 4.11.24 for lunch. When you walk through the door, the place is well decorated/furnished and cosy and expectations are high. Unfortunately, the welcome at the bar is a little underwhelming. We ordered fairly straight forward pub fare: fish and chips, a beef sandwich and BLT. The BLT was acceptable but the fish and chips were over cooked. I had the beef sandwich which was poor. The meat was like shoe leather and very gristly. It was a challenge to find something edible and did not require excess chewing to make it digestible. As it was a Monday, we wondered if it was the chef’s day off. If it was, it may have been better to not serve food at all rather than the sub standard offering we received. Alternatively, the RG could consider just serving sandwiches etc using good quality ingredients or food bought in from M and S. Frankly, I am posting this review to encourage improvement, the RG has got so much spot on to create a good ambience and it is such a shame that it is struggling to get the basics right!

The reason I give ONLY 1 STAR for food, is because I was VERY disappointed with my fish and chips. The fact that it was a SMALL piece of fish would not have mattered, if the fish had been fresh. It certainly did NOT TASTE fresh, and ...on closer inspection of the flesh...it did not LOOK fresh. Fresh fish flesh is meant to be bright WHITE, but this was grey in parts, and certainly NOT bright white. I chose not to make a fuss, because it was my son's birthday lunch.

Having dined here several times, our recent visit was disappointing. Several dishes arrived cold, and the vegetarian options felt limited. The fish and chips lacked seasoning, with bland, uncrispy chips and cold mushy peas, which detracted from the meal. I emailed to provide feedback but received no response. Hopefully, the quality and responsiveness improve, as this has been a favorite spot in the past.

We have been to the Rusty Gun previously and enjoyed their food so were looking forward to going back. Unfortunately the food didn't measure up to the previous occasion. A winter veg bourguignon was no more than chunky diced veg in a thin gravy, and overbooked broccoli. My husband's fish & chips had obviously come direct from the freezer, not unexpected for pub grub, but looked rather anaemic. The 2 diners who had the steak and stilton pie enjoyed their food and the puds went down well although I thought the sorbet & ice cream was overpriced for the size of the scoops. My friend who ordered the apricot and peach crumble was not so impressed as she said the fruit tasted as though it was tinned not fresh. The meal worked out at £40 per head (including drinks) which is reasonable these days but the food wasn't quite on the mark - NB the pub was quite busy so we didn't say anything to the staff at the time which i appreciate we should have done. Also they did say that they had had an issue with the gas so a number of dishes were off the menu which may have caused a ripple effect onto the other dishes that day.

We have visited the Rusty Gun on several occasions and really enjoyed everything about it. We went a month ago and I had the ribs which were practically raw. They were replaced but not as good as usual. We were a bit put off of going again but received a Birthday voucher offering a free bottle of Prosecco so decided to go. The place was practically empty for a Saturday. I showed the email to the waitress and she acted as though she had never seen one before and could I email it to them. After several attempts they said they couldn’t receive the email for some reason but eventually let me have a bottle, this took over 20 minutes and in that time our food had turned up. I had ordered the ribs again and my husband the chicken burger, the ribs were cold and both our fries were so hard you couldn’t eat them. We were so disappointed we didn’t bother getting a dessert. When I said to the waitress that the place had gone downhill she asked if I wanted to see the manager but by this time we had had enough. Unfortunately we won’t be returning.

Lovely pub for drinks but NOT for eating! This is supposed to be premium end. It is not as the food was less than mediocre. Chargrilled goats cheese salad - cheese uncooked and not fresh and rock-hard. Fish was described as tempura but came out soggy and luke-warm, clearly pre-cooked and reheated. Chips were old, bruised and not crisp. Upon complaining the manageress deducted the goats salad and the service charge. However, we didn't go out for cheap food but a premium meal. Wait times for drinks was excessive especially as the pub was half-empty. The review summary on this page is about right, this pub has lowered its standards and we will not be returning. You take a big risk if you go!

Table booked for 7.45pm. 3 of us. Greeting was poor, almost surly. Taken to huge round table with seating for 5 or 6. Not exactly cosy and crammed in between other tables. Server delivered 3 menu clipboards but one had nothing on it. She left it on the table and didn't return. No one came near us but eventually caught the eye of a server who took our drinks order. These were delivered and we placed our food order. The lass seemed taken aback that we wanted food. We ordered 2 starters explaining the 3 of us would share so that we got a plate each. We then tried to order mains. Now those of us used to the Gun know (knew) it's reputation for pork cookery. The Scotch eggs used to be a light on the menu. Sadly they had 'run out', so clearly their collection plate would be deficient and all of us grabbed the menus to seek alternatives. We tried to order the pork belly, another former favourite, only to be told this too was 'off'. I ordered the Pork Burger and herself ordered the sausages and mash. Our friend ordered the chicken burger. Have to say my pork burger was good. Piled high with pulled pork as well as the burger. Just rather sloppy and falling apart. No way it could be eaten as a burger in your hands. The chips were good. Our friends chicken burger was more bun than chicken and very disappointing. The sausages and mash was OK but nothing special, whereas in times past the bangers were, well, banging. We ordered more drinks when the mains arrived. Simple G&Ts. The first round came as expected, Gin and ice with a slice and bottles of tonic to add yourself. The second round came mixed with ice. No slice. A bit surprising. When our mains were finished we were offered the desert menu. I though an Affogato would finish the meal nicely. Oh, sorry, I was told but the coffee machine has been turned off and cleaned down. It was only 9pm! My wife and her friend ordered Espresso Martinis. Cocktails, no coffee required. Ah, sorry, no can do. The bars closed and being cleaned down. Not yet 9.10pm... unbelievable. Over £40/head and absolutely no way it was worth that. So sad to see the state of the place and the complete lack of customer focus. I don't know who is running the place now but suspect it won't be for long. We didn't read reviews because we 'knew' it was a great place. But that is no longer the case. Be warned. I always try to be fair in what I write. The burger was good if sloppy. The chips were good. I liked the Frickles. The sausage starter was chopped up, thin bits of rather dried up sausage. The tomato sauce and mustard sauce was tasty. Both could have been home made. The young man who assisted with our table service seemed to be trying. The lass wasn't fully with it. The manageress (I assume) who hovered about didn't seem too fussed about our obvious disappointment. We had looked forward to great food in a charming old pub with a leisurely chat over drinks. Only the old building did not let us down.

Sorry to say we were all really disappointed, especially as I was considering two other local venues and had sort of ruled out The Rusty Gun, but then changed my mind at the last minute when my brother's best mate gave it a glowing reccommendation. This was also meant to be a sort of second wake for my late Mum, so it made it doubly disappointing that not only was it not special, but also it seemed not good value for money considering how poor the food was. We were a party of 6 adults and 2 kids. Loads of us opted for the pork belly. It was so disappointing. It didn't fall apart as a slow roast should and the crackling was non existent. Instead it had an inedible rubbery rind. Veg nothing special. All looked great on the menu but was really average or below average. We had to wait ages despite it being an early booked lunch (12.15) and being the second party into the pub behind a group of 4 and it really was a very quiet Tuesday. Service was incredibly slow and poor - dirty crocks and glasses on the table and one of the staff having delivered something, she then ignored all that and walked away empty-handed when there was so much she could have taken away. On top of that we paid for the kids to have some pig nuts to feed the pigs - big in-your-face bucket of them when you went in - and in fact not only did they not even see a single pig, (it was too hot and they should have said, in fairness, that the kids wouldn't have a chance, that the pigs would be hiding in the shade out of sight), but it then transpired that the pub don't even own the pigs, when I asked, so it was all a bit fake. Really felt let down. The pud and the beer was OK. I really did want to like it, for it to be a great meal in celebration of my Mum (who was a great cook) but it was decidedly average...or below. The best thing was the surroundings (nice pub, nice outdoor space but lacked comfortable seating) and the company of the family! Bloomin' shame. Would not recommend it.

I was disappointed with the food today. The roast was just average, but the prices are higher than usual, slightly above Weatherspoons, but with a premium price tag. £7.95 for a packet salad and corn on the cob with BBQ sauce on it—it wasn’t grilled, warm, or seasoned properly. It’s a shame because the food is usually good, but we haven’t visited in a while. I understand that prices have gone up due to wages and bills, but so have my expectations. If I’m paying £7.95 for a dish like that, it’s disappointing, especially since we used to love stopping at this place.

Ordered a bacon and Brie baguette at an expensive £13 - what turned up looked like a child’s meal - tiny baguette with a scrap of bacon - returned food and insisted on a refund - manageress offered no apology and showed no embarrassment in serving me the worst food for quality and value in 49 years of dining out - shame as it has a nice interior and garden but completely let down by appalling food / service

Appalling food - paid £13 for a Brie and bacon baguette but was served a small roll with hardly any bacon - returned food immediately to bar and asked for the manager - she was disinterested and non apologetic - quite frankly the worse food I have ever been served - shame as the pub has nice gardens and interior - needs to get food right

We’ve wanted to eat here for years, but never got around to it until last Sunday. It was Dreadful!!! Possibly the worst carvery we’ve ever eaten. I’ll start with the positives. The meat was “ok” (hence the 2 stars). I found it to be flavoursome and cooked relatively well, that said; the other four in our party found it rubbery and greasy. Their lager is also decent. We had the Estrella and it was well kept. They don’t offer stuffing or cracking (which is very rare with a carvery) as an option, but also limit you to one Yorkshire pudding (these were adequate. Light and fluffy). Vegetable options are carrots and parsnips. Boiled. Raw (to the point of being inedible). And cabbage. Which was also raw (you’d question if it had even been boiled or steamed). “Roast” potatoes were swimming in grease. Barely par-boiled and soft. You had to fish for those that were roasted, as most had been served the same colour as they would have gone in the oven. Gravy was thin and watery and totally lacked flavour. It added nothing to the meal whatsoever. Service was lacklustre. It’s not a criticism. Staff were pleasant, but no more. The odd smile and very basic conversation and communication. We found this strange, as the place was virtually empty (at 12:30pm on a Sunday). At the end of our meal, we were asked if we’d enjoyed our food. We said it wasn’t very nice, at a basic level and were instantly offered a 20% discount without quibble. What’s very evident at the Rusty Gun is that management oversight is non-existent. They clearly don’t have anyone involved with food service and presentation that manages what’s served (evidenced by the total lack of quality). In conclusion, you have a beautiful country pub with every single required credential for a fabulous, quintessential “good quality English country pub” and poor knowledge and lack of effort is absolutely letting you down. It tarnishes what could be possible.

There were only 2 front of house staff on at lunchtime when we went. So service was slow. The food was good, but the chips were oversalted for our taste. The Rusty Gun has great space outside for children and the outside seating we used was excellent.

Decided to go back to the Rusty Gun as had a pleasant experience before. It’s totally gone downhill. The food was revolting and burnt, exceptionally rude waitress who couldn’t have given a damn that we were very disappointed with our food. Stay away from the caesar salad as it was minus the parmasan cheese and the anchovies as advertised and replaced with grated cheddar, burnt bacon bits and a burnt chicken fillet. The chicken burger was rock hard and overcooked and tasteless!! No offer to reduce our bill at all. Just met with a gormless expression! Also, most worryingly the poor pigs in the garden had no shade, there was a glass someone had thrown in to their own enclosure, it was hugely overgrown with an old tea cup and rocks everywhere. Whilst I understand they are not owned by the pub, but the local farmer, your glasses are your responsibility to be collected, so this should have been removed immediately after I advised the rude female waitress of this. Hugely upsetting seeing animals treated like that. If you advertising the pigs, make sure the farmer pulls his finger out and looks after them properly, utter disgrace!!! Extremely poor performance from the staff and will never be returning. Get your act together!!!!

The Rusty Gun used to be so much better. Now the food is expensive, the portions are smaller and the place itself needs a make over. It needs painting and tidying up. The tables need re-staining. It wouldn't take much.

Always a great meal at the Rusty Gun! One of many visits over the years. Was quiet at lunch on Friday, which suits us fine. Great service, great food and drink menu (my wife is Gluten Free and the menu was clear and well catered for). The Duck Bon Bon’s are a favourite of ours for starter, and the BBQ ribs are highly recommended. This time I chose the ‘Taste of The Rusty Gun’, of which every part was lovely - the scotch egg was awesome! Nothing left on the plate once I’d finished. Will hopefully visit again soon!

This was not a good experience, particularly as one of the group whose birthday we were celebrating particularly wanted to come to you. The first disappointment was your declining of a simple request that two of us wanted to choose the starter from the fixed menu and the main courses from the a-la-carte menu. In my many years of dining out (I am 84) I have never had such a request declined before. The second problem was more dishonest. I asked what the soup of the day was and was told it was Leek and Potato, which I then ordered. When the meal arrived it was in fact Tomato soup, with no explanation for the change. Not wanting to make a fuss on a birthday celebration I accepted it, only commenting when one of the waitresses later came to ask how out meal was. At the end of the meal another waitress explained that because of the mistake with the soup, particularly as Tomato would not have been my choice, they were making a reduction in our bill. However, rather than subtracting the cost of the soup, they only deducted the cost of the cheapest item on the bill, an ice-cream. In the past we have enjoyed many meals with you. This was not one of them!

First visit although passed by many times. In all aspects the pub was excellent but disappointed with the food stalls, there were just a few bits and pieces in an area of the pub. It's advertised as selling meat, fruit and veg and much more. Shame as everything else was great.

Very good pub! The plates are generously filled and the meal is delicious! The glasses are large and well-filled. The staff is polite and attentive. I highly recommend it to French people who appreciate good food, as well as to everyone else!
