I had the fortunate experience of booking myself into The Old Bull Inn to attend a wedding in the local area. I stayed for two night and had a room in the main hotel. The setting is quaint and historical but with easy access (less than 100m) from the hotel door to a local Tesco Metro and a handful of High Street amenities that you would expect in any town. The room was pleasant, clean and comfortable. It was well appointed and was functional yet in-keeping with the aesthetic of the building. The bed was exceptionally comfortable - as were the pillows! My room had a fairly sizeable step up into the bathroom which may be a problem for some with mobility issues but this certainly isn’t the case for all rooms as my friends did not have this step. The breakfast was lovely and the staff were happy to accommodate a variety of choices although a cooked ‘full english’ seems standard. Where the Old Bull really stands out for me though is the customer service. Staff were exceptionally attentive and helpful and nothing seemed too much trouble - from extra towels, to borrowing an ironing board to holding a bag for me and arranging a taxi. From the youngest part time member of staff all the way through to what I presume was the owner or manager - we were greeted warmly and waited on exceptionally. I highly recommend a stay!

Booked for a couple nights stay ...very central to places we wanted to visit including Cambridge. However the Inn is " very tired" & needs complete refurb , the stairs to the rooms were dirty, and the room we were allocated was small & dark (probably should have been a single) & next to an air extractor for the next door restaurant ! and a security light for an adjacent property that was on all night ...Room 9..be warned ! Luckily there was another room available for our 2nd night when we complained & that was the complete opposite (Room 1) ... large, airy & bright 👌. Breakfast good, though a bit hit & miss ...1st day tea was just in a big jug , next day actual pot bought to table plus shall we say different cooking skills each day (fried eggs ).

Ordered a variety of meals as a family. They were all various degrees of disappointing. The BBQ was stuck to the bone. The king prawn pasta was not fully cooked. The meals seemed very pre-prepared. I remember enjoying some good meals here in the years I've been here before, but this has clearly changed.

We were supplied with plenty of drinking water without having to ask and provided with plates etc for a cake we brought along. Attended a family funeral in Royston, and Old Bull was competively priced compared to the chains who were much further away. The room was comfortable clean and had everything we needed, including tea, coffee, and biscuits. My wife is pretty noise sensitive, so with traditional sash windows and our room being over the outdoor seating area was the downside. The welcome at breakfast and excellent food & coffee was positive. Free car park and central location make it hard to beat for the price. Would stay again.

It was more expensive when we got there and the menus had differed. The steak was supposed bto be with chunky chips but we got skinny fries. The burger was very dry and the bacon was really bad. The experience was not great. The starter was ok. There are nicer places for the money

Absolutly terrible breakfast. Ordered 1 x full english and 1 x veggi full english @ £12 each. Bacon burnt to a crisp unedible. Veggie breakfast came with no mushrooms or tomatos.( so £12 for 2 veggie sausages, 2 over cooked poached eggs, beans and toast) Asked a member of staff for the other half of the breakfast, that arrived after we had finished. Wont be going back, there are other places to eat near by with far better service. Very dissapointed.

We stayed here the night before a family wedding. The room was basic but fairly comfortable and was in an apartment type building a short walk away from the pub rather than in the pub itself. The lady checking us in was very helpful and took us to the room and showed us where everything was. We ate in the pub in the evening and my meal was awful. My plate was swimming with grease and the side order of seasonal veg was was greasy and burnt. The staff were however helpful and I couldn’t fault the service.

It says onsite parking but it’s for anyone using the pub, which means you have to park away from the pub and carry your suitcases. Also there is a function room attached which holds private events and while we were there 2 were held and we were unable to get to sleep until 1.30am due to shouting and swearing and with young children is unacceptable.

We visited the old bull inn for a wedding reception and I was so shocked by how disorganised the venue was. When we arrived it was a super hot day and we had a disabled grandparent with us and found out when we arrived their was NO DISABLED ACCESS to the Venue room so had to carry our 93 year old grandfather up the front stairs and then again up another flight of stairs to the room we was eating in as the older women with blonde hair refused to let us use the back slop into the building. Once we was inside the lady continued to be really rude to everyone including the bride and groom which was very awkward. Once we was all seated the food began to come out, some of it came straight to the table and they knew who it was for and some of it was a pick a mix of who it was going to. A few people didn’t get their starters and nothing was done to rectify this was just taken as ‘oh well you don’t have a starter’. This theme continued through dinner some people didn’t get the meal they asked for or a meal at all and desert was the same and in the end no one knew what was what and gave up so some people didn’t eat. Once we had dinner we was all asked to leave the room so they could clear the tables so again having to move our 93yr old grandparent down the stairs again into the bar. Once we was at the bar I Noticed some children playing with their goody bags they had been given at their table and the older women who was being rude at the beginning of the day was back and having a pop at the children for playing with their stuff in the corridor between the 2 rooms, I was shocked as they were only playing like children do and she was so aggressive and rude to them That they looked like they were upset and run back to their parents. From what I saw this was happening all the time until she eventually went home. The evening was good once everyone was dancing but the venue itself was very disorganised and I’m unsure as to why people work in venues like this when they obviously do not like people and children and seemed like the older blonde lady with glasses really dampened the day for everyone she come into contact with.

Impromptu Sunday meal with my Mum, Step-Dad, my fiancé, my son & daughter. Booked a table for six using the website. It was quite quiet when we walked in the restaurant. We had a lovely table near the window in the main restaurant side. We chose not to have any starters, we ordered our drinks, quickly followed by the mains. The fours adults chose to have the Carvery, my daughter chose the BBQ Chicken Burger & my son chose to Mac n Cheese off the children’s menu. The adults were able to go up & choose our selected meats & sides. I choose Beef & Gammon, with a side of Roast Potatoes, Yorkshire Puddings, Stuffing, Red Cabbage, Cauliflower Cheese, Carrots & Peas with Gravy. The kids had to wait a following 10minutes until their Mains arrived. The Carvery was delicious, the meat was tender, the veg was al-dente & the Gravy had lots of flavour. Overall we throughly enjoyed the Carvery. I managed to squish a pudding in to. I went for the Cherry Bakewell Tart with Ice Cream. Safe to say that I cleaned my plate. We really enjoyed our meal. 4 x Carvery, 1 x adult meal, 1 x kids meal, 2 x puddings, plus drinks came to £138.00.

So I'll start with the good stuff. The bed was comfortable. The evening menu was great. Couldn't fault the food in the evening. The staff seemed friendly and helpful. However now I'll mention the bad stuff. The rooms need a total refurb. They are a state especially the bathrooms. The shower goes from cold to boiling. Nothing in the middle. And the morning breakfast was appalling. You had no choice, it was full English or full English. The toast was stone cold and rock hard and the bacon was so fatty that it wasn't worth having. We won't be returning which was a shame as potentially it has a lot to offer

Went for lunch at The Old Bull Inn. A nice location with the option to dine in the restaurant, bar or outside. We chose the restaurant. We found ourselves a table and some menus to start with. We gave our drinks orders and having perused the menus we gave our lunch orders - two lamb shank, one baked plaice and a Thai curry. The menu had a reasonable selection. After a time lapse, presumably for cooking the meals freshly, our meals arrived. There was one hiccup as instead of a Thai curry a mushroom and onion type of tart arrived. The waiting staff were made aware of the error but when nothing appeared by return it was decided to have that rather than have a long wait by which time everyone else would have finished. The lamb dishes were well presented with creamed mash and green vegetables. The meat fell off the bone and was very good. The mushroom and onion tart was served on a bed of small halved potatoes and was also very well presented and tasty (even though not ordered). The baked plaice was dry and disappointing. Desserts of lemon tart with fruit and cream were fairly average. The crepe brûlée was excellent. We felt the dining room lacked any atmosphere and the service was awful. We had to look for staff to get any service on most occasions. Not what you want when you go out for a leisurely lunch with relatives. However on the whole the food was good.

Eight old friends met for our annual get-together for lunch and how disappointing it was. The seafood tagliatelle was lukewarm with crusty overcooked prawns. The meatballs were cold, served with just about warm pasta and the fish was tasteless. When we told the waitress she said she’d tell the kitchen and offered us fresh pasta - what about the seafood?!! No response from the kitchen. Desserts were OK(ish) but custard was, yet again, luke warm. We should have sent the food back but with eight people and having waited over 30 minutes for our food, we would have been there until the evening. If you want a good meal avoid The Old Bull or you’ll be wasting your money.

Service was friendly and professional and the food( I opted for the Sunday roast) was superb. The beef was a bit overdone but otherwise I have no complaints. I wondered if the wet dogs might and put other people off but living in the country, dogs being welcome is good. Reckon we might have been better in a room without others as wet gear and wet dogs is an acquired taste! Nevertheless, I’d definitely go back here again for lunch.

My husband and I meet up with family for a Sunday lunch, we had a reserved booking, when we got to our table I had a job to get to my seat as there were dogs in the way plus backpacks Ect, there was a group there with about 5 dogs , we had a dog practically under our table, smell of wet dogs which I know cannot be helped due to weather, but not nice when you are eating your dinner, then we looked to see two dogs sitting on the beaches where other people have to sit, and eat , think this should not be allowed as if you came well dressed and sit where dogs have been and get covered in hairs , but know member of staff ask for the dogs to be removed form the seat , this is not good enough !!!

What a little jewel a beautiful old inn built in the 1500s heaped with history and Proud people who run it are happy to tell you all about the history of it beautiful quaint rooms very clean looking out over a courtyard amazing breakfast and unbelievably they had gluten free bread and it has to be said the most comfortable bed I've ever stayed in in a hotel I can't wait to visit my friends again just so I can stay there

Menu was quite good. We had a shared bread starter. My husband ordered sea bass and I Ordered Sefood Linguine which according to the menu has various types of fish in it. Starter arrived fairly quickly. Had to wait nearly an hour for the main course and this was after asking twice what was the delay. Eventually it arrived. Sea bass wasn’t too bad. However the linguine was terrible. The only fish in it were prawns. A few small prawns in the linguine and 3 deep fried prawns on top. The only food I could taste was tomato sauce. No taste or smell of the fish at all. And it’s not cheap at all. Would advise anyone to avoid this restaurant. I know I won’t be returning.

We stayed here for 1 night whilst visiting Newmarket races. We used the coach service from Royston station which took us directly to Newmarket. Absolutely loved our stay in this friendly and welcoming inn. The rooms are a little small and old fashioned but it’s in keeping with the building and the style. The bed was very comfortable, the room was clean, the shower was hot, what more could you want?! We had dinner in the bar and it was huge and delicious! Breakfast was also very tasty if a little on the small side. Would definitely return and would definitely recommend.

A 14th century coaching inn may be interesting but it is not comfortable. Our room seemed as if it had been carved out of a corridor.

As the title states my family and I had arranged a buffet lunch for my Grandma's 90th Birthday. The food was poorly presented and the cutlery and plates were filthy. The food itself was ok but we definitely got the feeling we were just being left to it. No glasses or plates were cleared and noone even checked in with us to see if everything was ok. To top it off after a spending a small fortune on drinks also we were told we had to move away from our table at 18.30 incase people wanted to eat dinner. We did move table and we ended up staying until close to 11pm. During the evening some of us ordered a meal which took ages to come. Everyone's came at different times and one person's order only came after repeated reminders. When it did come the cutlery was again filthy as was alot of the glasses throughout the day. In fairness the food was very good but the service was just poor.

We met my sister and family here for a wedding. Reception was pleasant and very smart with fresh flowers. They have a nice courtyard to sit and chill with a glass of wine.

I’ve been here a number of times, but recently had my mums wake here. The buffet was a good selection, the staff are lovely and everyone said how nice of a place it is.

Our Sunday Roast overall was okay. There was a good choice of vegetables, but the yorkshire was very small and unfortunately our beef was quite tough. The waitress kindly brought us more but even this was also on the tough side. My son's salmon was lovely and my mother enjoyed her chicken pie. Unfortunately the pie was just a puff pastry crust over a "chicken casserole". Think this should always be stated as a pastry topping on a menu because if not am always disappointed. The surroundings cannot be faulted and the staff are very friendly and efficient. Feel that with a few small changes this could be a truly wonderful place to eat in the town.

Best ghost pub ever. Went in, walked around, nobody in, no bar staff, all lights on, beer pumps all lit up but nobody home. We were there for about 3 minutes and then walked out. What a waste

Nice place and food and service good. Pretty boring atmosphere though and after we paid our bill and were leaving we called out goodbye and no one answered. We've been before and loved the little shop in the corner but it was disappointing this time.
