Amazing !! Well worth a visit . Stunning place and cuisine . Book in advance is best . Great for a special occasion

We visited The Stonemill on a whim on or way back from a break in Wales. It was a great choice for Sunday lunch. The only snag was finding the place as sat nav only takes you nearby (keep heading along the road another 300 yards past where the satnav tells you and you'll find it!). The restaurant has a lovely ambience in a converted cider mill complete with the original mill wheel. We were greeted with a friendly welcome, served our drinks promptly and the rest of the service was well paced. We both had the Sunday roast which was really good - top quality meat and well cooked veggies. The garlic and herb roasties were a triumph too! Would recommend to anyone looking for somewhere different than the ususual run of the mill chain restaurants or decidedly average pub food. We will be back if passing through again in future!

A cosy place with a different feel to it. We had no complaints with the service or the food provided and enjoyed our meal. We will certainly go back in the future. Mike

What an absolute find this restaurant was. Welcoming staff and restaurant looked fab. On arrival we were shown to our table and waitress took our drinks order and left us the menus to look at. Lovely choices on the Sunday lunch menu, cauliflower soup, calves liver and crab starters ordered and I have to say they were well presented lovely and the cauliflower soup was superb. Lunch arrived all served hot, good selection of vegetables and cauliflower cheese. Two puddings ordered, but unfortunately the lemon posset was a little too sharp so not eaten, but didn't complain as obviously not everyone has same taste require. All in all had a really good lunch staff very friendly but I do like to give an honest opinion, and I have to say the young boy that was serving on our table, I am not sure if he was nervous or new but when he cleared the table instead of taking few plates away at a time or scrapping excess food onto one plate, he was tipping the plate onto another where the knives and fork and food remnants were falling off the plates. Sorry to be negative but that was not very professional. Never the less we had a lovely lunch and would definitely recommend.

We ate here on a Saturday night after previously having a Sunday roast at the venue. The roast was great. Service was great, and the food was unfortunately pretty average. We ordered a medium rare Fillet steak, which came out almost well done. We didn't want to complain and send our food back and be seen to cause a scene plus the rest of our food would have gone cold. The menu stated triple cooked chips, but im pretty certain our chips were not triple cooked and were more like under cooked potato wedges. £6.50 for a bowl of veg seems steep too. Food was well presented.

We had an excellent meal at the Stonemill, although with a few "features" that may be worthy of comment. We were welcomed and shown to our table, and after about half-an-hour a complimentary portion of breaded whitebait and tartare sauce arrived - off-limits, sadly, to my wife, who is coeliac, but gratefully scoffed by me - lovely big juicy fish and good sauce. After another 10 minutes, and having seen people who had arrived after us placing their orders (always annoying, that), we got a bit impatient and went in search of some staff. Our order was taken, and after another 15 minutes more complimentary things arrived - broad bean and caramelised onion purée, which married the beany bitterness and sweet oniony caramel very nicely. In another 10 minutes some likewise unexpected bread, oil and vinegar arrived - we explained (again) that my wife needed something gluten-free, so some suitable rolls were duly found and provided. These proved still to be frozen inside, although given the timescales we were working to, they had plenty of time to defrost. Then the actual food started arriving, all of which was superb (although, on a small point of Italian grammar, "Arancini" is plural - if you're only getting one, it's an "Arancino".) Mains were lamb (Madame) and sole (me), and a special word about the green veg, which is not always British restaurants' strong point, but here was succulent and just al dente. Our house Romanian red was earthy and piquant, and slipped down very nicely. Stuffed to the gills as we were with multiple starters, we skipped the puds and just got the bill - which, when it arrived, was £49. I did think (who wouldn't?) of paying up and running, but, being honest folk, we felt bound to point out that, haphazard service notwithstanding, it should probably be at least twice that amount. Unfortunately (for the restaurant, not us) tips could not be added to the amount on the card machine, but could only be left as cash, so sadly in these cashless, contactless times they had to go without. So an all-round 5 stars for food, a solid 3 for service, given that they made amends for their slowness with lots of extra goodies.

We ate at Stonemill for Sunday lunch with a large family group and couldn’t fault it. Everything was perfect! All the food was delicious and cooked beautifully. The service was timely and attentive. We had a great time and look forward to returning soon.

Very poor service, arrived at 1900 hrs and had to ask for our order at 2000 hrs, this meant the table who arrived after us had chosen all the king scallops so none left for us. I needed a steak knife to cut my duck and the steaks although tasty were small, double cooked chips undercooked. Ordered a coffee at 2200 hrs and arrived at 2230 hrs, the staff were stood chatting in the bar area. Very inept service, will not be returning.

We had a large family celebration and were therefore asked to pre-order. Despite this, one starter was missing so one of the party had to wait. There was 20 of us, so it is easy to miss off a dish. The starters were all delicious. The mains were a little slow at coming out which meant the food was not hot by the time we could eat. All the food was tasty but one duck was mostly gristle and some of the steaks were a little tough. The duck was a ‘one off’ as the others were good. I mentioned it, and showed the gristly remains to the staff - but they didn’t seem to care. Whilst it wasn’t horrendous and the young waiting staff were lovely, I felt a little underwhelmed. Including a tip, the bill was just short of £1000 and yet the experience didn’t really match the cost. The older members of the party had to leave their jackets on as the room was a little chilly. We won’t be rushing back.

We arrived here on a snowy day with two friends. We ordered around 1ish ( no starters) just the Sunday lunch and did not receive any food until 2pm. Service was really slow. A couple after us got served before us and I ended up having to ask where our food was as we were starving. I ordered lamb which was lovely and my husband the beef. Our friends had linguine and cod. I’m not sure if the linguine and cod came with the vegetables they brought out as it was on the Sunday menu. However even for the beef and lamb the vegetables they brought out were small. A small dish of carrots and runner beans and a small dish of cauliflower cheese. They did apologise about the wait. However when we were served it seemed they couldn’t leave us alone and kept taking dishes away when we were eating without asking which was just annoying to be honest! The food itself was good but, I would think twice about coming back because of the slow service and lack of veg.

Nice surroundings and nice staff, but .. Paid £37 for a 3 course dinner. Starter: Blob of salmon. Main: One parsnip cut in half. Blob of mash. Lamb shredded and rolled into a cylinder. Plate was small but even so the dinner barely filled the middle of it. Dessert: Christmas pudding medallion about an inch and a half across by 2cm deep with a ladle of custard on it. They did throw in some whitebait as a bonus starter but there was only about 8 fish for 6 people. Food was luke warm it was chilly sitting by the wall. If you are willing to pay for nice surroundings and don't mind miserly portions then this is the place for you. I am sure their profits are quite healthy.

Food was perfection and the service was excellent! everything was homemade and you can tell as the food is authentic and brilliant. Definitely worth a visit!

Dreadful service from staff slow throughout meal . food overpriced for poor quality food average at best . On expression of feedback of food and explaining our concerns staff was more concerned of us just paying the bill and leaving offering no apology . Even commenting we paid wrong bill and asked us for the extra £7 . With staff continuing to be rude . Highly recommend that you don’t go here as you will be disappointed . Mortified by the fact that we have been charged for 2xjugs of tap water. The meals looked very pretty but not very tasty sadly. My husband had the lamb for main course but was disappointed by the fact there was 2 tiny pieces of lamb on the plate which didn’t reflect the price charged. Friend had one course but they still charged for the set menu as there is no charging for one course. There are definitely better places to enjoy a special celebration in the area. We were beyond disappointed as we had visitors years ago and the meal was faultless- but sadly now this ish t the case we had a disappointing evening. Book with caution and a deep pocket for what you get.

My wife and I originally booked to come here for our wedding anniversary in March but ran into lockdown. Six months later we finally made it for lunch and it was splendid. We’ve been trying to book this redtaurant for couple of weeks - but it’s always “fully booked” on a Weekend, so we’ve tried our luck on a Wednesday night. We must’ve been very lucky as even a Wednesday might, by the time it came to the booking day, was full. After leaving the place We’ve understood why is always busy as, previous reviews, everything is at a very high quality from service to atmosphere and food. Very nice touches with free canapes, amuse-bouche, and bread. The menu is very well balanced, difficult to pick as everything sounds amazing but with perfect cured beef, lamb and fondant - our choices. 100% will return and recommend it. Went on the off chance as we were just having a day out. Previous reviews of the place looked great so though we would give it a try. How glad are we that we did! The food and service was awesome! Enjoyed every course. We were literally the only ones in there but never felt either ignored or overbearing. If I had one tiny criticism it was a bit chilly! Overall I would highly recommend. Gorgeous surroundings and an excellent restaurant all round.Thank you!

Whilst staying in a cottage at Steppes Farm we booked Sunday lunch. All the staff were friendly,helpful & attentive. Best Sunday lunch in years! The Welsh beef,great assortment of vegetables & Yorkshire pudding were amazing. The deserts were so tasty too. Definitely recommend the chocolate fondant.

We found this hidden gem by accident whilst camping nearby. The Sunday lunch menu had something for everyone and we all found it to be delicious. The staff were amazing and really made us feel welcome. We had a 2 year toddler with us and this did not create a problem in any way. The Stonemill has definitely adapted brilliantly to remain a warm and welcoming place to enjoy delicious food during Covid. We will be back.

Booked for my husband & I last night. Friendly, low key service. Lovely setting in old stonemill with exposed beams. Good spacing between tables. Everything on the menu looked good, was hard to choose. I had duck soldiers with hens egg, then duo of welsh lamb with dauphinoise potatoes. My husband had ham hock terrine with piccalilli then fillet steak. Prior to these we were served a tomato & red pepper soup amuse bouche and little home baked loaves. Everything was good. Would return.

We booked for Sunday Lunch and had the most fabulous meal. The room was beautiful, the food and drink sublime and we received a first class service from all of the staff. We were visiting the area for a couple of days and if we ever return, we shall definitely book here again. Highly recommended.

Visiting the area we managed to book The Stonemill for our meal out - and we can say is the best choice that we could’ve done. The restaurant is relatively small, most of the time fully booked for dinner - tried to book it again for a Wednesday but they were already full, but has an amazing atmosphere, and goes without saying they do follow all the current legislation regarding covid-19 (sanitiser points available, tables spaced out, disposable menus). The menu is very attractive and after debating we decided to go for the smoked duck starter, lamb & beef mains, fondants as pudding. The starter was amazing, very strong flavours from smoked duck and truffles but well balanced with the egg. Main course for both lamb and beef was presented beautifully, with amazing quality meats and seasonal products to accompany it. Dessert must’ve been one of the best fondants I have ever tasted. Thank you Stonemill for an amazing experience.

Also, while realise it us only a sample menu online the price should be reflective. we arrived to find set menu price £5 per person more expensive. a big deal for a family.

I booked four of us in for a birthday meal and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. All the meals were well prepared and delicious. The wine list was extensive and well researched. The staff were very friendly and accommodating throughout our stay in this small but very comfy restaurant.I would definitely eat here again and fully recommend it if you require a treat and something different.

The Stone mill is set in the most beautiful countryside near monmouth. We had been recommend the place by friends. The restaurant is lovely and very tastefully decorated. The main front man was lovely, warm and friendly didn't get his name?Welsh chap!We waited not too long for our food which was very tasty my only negative is only one choice for vegetarians and the roast was just the veg, roast potatoes with no gravy? Gutted but the tortellini was nice that my daughter had which we shared with my roast. Deserts were heavenly!I would definitely return if more vegetarian options were available.

It was 10 years ago we last had a meal here (we used to go once or twice a year). Moving and life had got in the way up until last night.Stepping into the restaurant was like going home. We choose this restaurant from trip advisor reviews.... and I need to tell its worth to go ... as from entering this restaurant u can feel impressed. Atmosphere is great , its cosy and welcoming. Front of the house lady very friendly and smiley. Waiter very friendly and helpful. No problem with fussy kids (as they dont have kids menu) . And finally coming to the food section AMAZING!!!!!! OMG Whitebaits with tartasauce, home made bread , and this delicious tomato soup ..... As main kids have battered fish and homemade chips yumy We have duck (dont remember full name ) and lamb shank (dont remember full name ) top tasty , chef is genius!!!!! Meats were so tasty. The setting of this restaurant in a converted stone mill is gorgeous - surrounded wonderful countryside. Service is attentive and the food was very good and a fair price. I have visited many times over the years and it never disappoints.

The nine of us came here for Sunday lunch as we were staying just the other side of Monmouth. The place itself is fantastic, really cosy and rustic, whilst the staff were all lovely. As for the food, that was delicious and good value for two courses, considering the fact it had two AA rosettes. The only thing that took the review down from five to four stars was the fact there was a long wait for food. Whilst I appreciate there was nine of us and it was quite busy, 90 minutes to wait is quite a long time - even with conversation in full swing! That said, I'd still happily eat here another time, should I find myself staying in the area again.

I visited The Stonemill for a date night with my beautiful wife, the amazing food and impeccable service compelled us to write a review. A real attention to detail and a clear focus on the quality of food really makes The Stonemill stand out as one of if not the best restaurant experience in Monmouthshire. Staff were attentive but not overbearing and the environment is warm and welcoming. We would happily recommend this restaurant to friends and family. We will definitely be back.

Tried to book this place for my birthday, might be lovely food but the way I have been spoken to on the phone has made me have to cancel my booking. I very rarely leave a review for restaurants but the way I have been treated has made me have to leave a review. Felt like my booking wasn’t important and I simply asked to pay the deposit via a secure link in an email and got talked to like I was dirt by both an employee and a manager. Awful customer service, definitely won’t be stepping foot anywhere near this place.

Very annoyed. I have been to this restaurant twice and could not say bad word about it, I would even recommend it to others. We went to book a table for my boyfriends 26th birthday meal and they wanted to hold a deposit for the table, which was fine. They asked for his card details over the phone which isn’t very normal thing to do, my boyfriend asked if there was way to do it over email as he wasn’t comfortable giving out his card details over the phone and they said that they could, so we been waiting for the email to come through for about a week, we had no email. We then get left a very abrupt and rude voicemail from them saying if we don’t pay the deposit today, we will loose our table. So my boyfriend called them up to explain we haven’t been sent the email to pay the deposit. The manager who spoke to my boyfriend, spoke to him like he was stupid saying they would of never agreed on taking deposits over email, as I was with my boyfriend at the time they did. Instead of owning up and apologise for the situation which you expect in customer service, he was very rude. Would not recommend anymore just because lack of customer service skills.

We visited the Stonemill Restaurant on a Thursday evening following a recommendation from a friend back in Bristol. The atmosphere was welcoming and warm, and the staff were really friendly and attentive. We both ordered the Welsh Rarebit to start, I opted for the beetroot and ricotta tortellini and my partner had the dukkah-crusted duck. Before our starters even arrived, we were presented with two amuse-bouches, some fried whitebait and then a delicious broccoli soup. All of the food was absolutely exceptional, cooked perfectly and presented beautifully. We had a classic sticky toffee pudding and a refreshing lemon posset for dessert. All in all, our visit surpassed our expectations - the value for money for the quality of food is amazing. Well worth a visit - 10/10!

I was here with a large group of friends for a Christmas meal just as we did last year! The venue is superb and worth a look around by itself.

Sunday lunch in the UK has become a very standard roast meal. Nothing wrong with that, but the Stonemill had taken it to another level. Pan fried pigeon to start was perfectly cooked and in a great sauce, the venison haunch was full of flavour, and the dark chocolate desert was not spoiled by sugar. Accompanied by a good glass of Shiraz. Excellent, and the service was top notch.

Great food and atmosphere well presented full of flavour food great staff reasonably priced and well worth a visit.

My fellow diners regretted not choosing the fish when they saw my dish presented! This meal was superb. The other choices were appreciated too with all mains accompanied by a lovely selection of vegetables. A lovely ambience to this restaurant.

A special and great find in Wales.Exceptional style and quality cuisine and great customer service too.To start they served a delicious mushroom amuse bouche and it was delightful.Steak,vegetables and deserts were impeccable in flavour and presentation .Yummy!

Fabulous food, beautifully presented. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We were impressed that they went out of their way to ensure they met the dietary need of one of my colleagues who was allergic to onion and garlic. Warm lovely setting. Thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

Such a lovely evening spent at the Stonemill. The service was excellent and the food was really superb - beautifully cooked and thoughtfully presented. Would highly recommend for anyone looking for something a little special.

Sunday 20th October 2019 - Lunch for a family of 5. This restaurant is in a tastefully converted barn in the countryside a couple of miles outside Monmouth. Tables are decent size and well spaced. We went the "whole hog" and had starters, mains, and puds, and all were excellent - not a dud dish in sight! A particular favourite was the confit of duck main...and the beef too - both delicious. Nice wines which are not too heavily marked up. The building lent the meal a very warm and comfortable ambience. Service was very good too. Recommended.

the Stonemill had come recommended to us by close friends who are very conversant with fine dinning. We attended at 6.30 pm on a Saturday eve, as a family of 5. The building it’s self was very picturesque and the inside was a spectacle of pretty features. We were immediately shown to our table and tended too. There seemed to be plenty of staff around, although the restaurant was very quiet when we first arrived. The menu was fixed price for 2 or 3 courses with some small additions for steak etc. Before our starters arrived we receive canapés which were a hit. Mini scotched egg and a pate, shortly followed by a crusty roll and a small soup type taster. Everything so far was a hit and got everyone excited for starters. I chose rarebit for my starter, not one of my usual starters but I can honestly say it was the nicest I’ve tried. For main I had sirloin steak which was cooked to perfection and for desert I had cheesecake. The service was very good. The only thing keeping it from excellent was the table positioning making it very difficult for the waitress/waiter to place the plates down in front of me and collect them which led to things being passed about. I can’t mark the experience down for that minor detail though as everything else was amazing. The meal came to under £40 per person with drinks, which I thought was great value considering the quality. We will definitely Re attend and hopefully sooner rather than later.

Delicious food and the front of house was amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed everything about the meal, including complimentary soup. When a large party turned up with 10 more people than they had booked for, we asked if they would rather we moved from our table to free up some space. It was a lovely evening, so we sat outside and were complimented 2 glasses of wine by the maître d’. Will definitely be returning and maybe even staying in one of the cottages with their dinner/bed/breakfast deal. Highly recommended.

Decided to have our tea here tonight. Opted for the carvery which was delicious as usual. The beef was so tender, all the vegetables were fresh, hot and delicious .

There were more than adequate numbers of staff but no one seemed in charge. It would have been nice to have sat out and had a drink in the garden but the extractor fan from the kitchen made it too noisy.

This was a very disappointing Sunday Lunch with inedible salty starters and very average lamb, served with stale Yorkshire puddings. The roast potatoes were tough and chewy and vegetables ordinary. If it hadn’t been a family occasion I would have complained. The bread at the start was the highlight of the meal.

The three course meal we had on Friday evening, surpassed our expectations. The setting is beautiful and the restaurant is fresh and contemporary but incorporates the traditional use of the building.
