Heading to a 1970s weekend - stopped here by chance. Food was good and reasonably priced with big portions. Would stop here again if our route took us past.

Walked here upon recommendation. What a lovely hidden gem. Good old fashioned pub serving a selection of real ales and wines at good prices. Friendly locals and cheeky pub cat. Nice old boy behind the bar running the place and swift with his service. Defiantly worth a visit and now I’ve discovered it I’ll visit again.

Eight family members including my elderly mum, were fortunate enough to have lunch a this wonderful atmospheric pub on Tuesday this week. It was the first time I had visited despite only living a few miles down the road. I don't often write reviews, but this place was so lovely, the place, the staff and the food were 100% spot on, sadly a very rare find these days. The landlord despite being fully booked very kindly managed to add 2 extra family members on to the table. They went out of their way to accommodate my mum who has problems with food and swallowing. The food was all home cooked and absolutely delicious and not overpriced, clean plates all round! I cannot rate it highly enough. We will most certainly become lunch regulars.

Myself and two ex work colleagues meet every 3months'ish for lunch and we like to explore different venues. The Stone Jug was my choice and the minute I walked through the front door I knew I had made a mistake. I had neglected to book and the pub was booked solid for Christmas lunches. I explained my predicament to the landlord who, most apologetically, confirmed he could not find us a table. He then pulled out all the stops to provide us with Turkey sandwiches. His focus on looking after us was absolutely exemplary given that he was in the middle of serving 50+ lunches. I cannot rate his focus on his customers too highly. The sandwiches were excellent as was the choice and quality of his real ales. As we left he said he looked forward to seeing us again, but please could we remember to book!! My answer was yes to both.

Ventured out on a 45 minute drive as this pub was recommended for it's great choice of Real Ales. Definitely worth the drive, great selection of beers with some from smaller breweries. It's tucked away and clearly has a good local following and we were made to feel very welcome and well hosted!

Looking for a midweek lunch spot which was unlikely to be packed out with people rushing to enjoy post-lockdown freedoms, this traditional village pub in the back streets of Clophill came to mind. It's been a good while since I was last there, but everything that impressed me last time is still in space - plus a seamless and scrupulously-observed set of guidelines to keep everyone safe.Good beer, great traditional food, a very friendly welcome and a chance to enjoy a sunny lunchtime meal were all big plus points, and there were plenty of other punters making the most of the chance to enjoy a proper pub. Double thumbs up all round.

I decided to try out this pub again after soo long. Firstly I was very impressed with the organisation and the staffs behaviour. When asked for drink, I was served promptly and well directed. Great seating plan, however, ordered some food, there did seem to be a flow of who’s serving what. When coming to order, the bar men seemed very jolly and seemed to be full of interest. Very organised. Two women on food duty seemed very efficient and in task. Bit shocked at the generous food portion. (Only cheese and tomatoe sandwiches) One quick note: when I got asked about taking the leftovers, I did find that very helpful. Only thing that I will warn the staff here about is: Although we are still in Covid-19, the only thing that did bother me was that when the staff member took my sandwiches she did handling with her finger tips!!!! Very risky... this should be taken as a hygiene concern, specially with what’s about right now.. I did feel a little bit uncomfortable during this situation(plate should had been taken first) Good effort Stone jug...

Visited this pub on many occasions. Lovely friendly atmosphere and good beers. Always have a lunchtime meal when we visit, which is great value for money with home cooked food. The omelettes are delicious. Only point to make is that the menu could be changed as we visit so frequently a change to the menu would be welcomed.Well worth a visit.

Lunch with colleagues and volunteers. Varied menu but standard pub grub. Plentiful and hot! Unfortunately we were a party of 10 and were put on one long table then a small round table at an angle which meant two of us were sitting with our backs to each other and in front of a service door! I have eaten there as a party before and have been placed better

We dropped in at lunch time for a quick drink while walking in the area. Adults, dogs and children were all welcomed with open arms. It is obviously a pub that specialises in catering for the local villagers given the out-of-the-way location but it is worth searching for. There was an impressive range of ales available, although the kitchen was closed on this particular day. Normally, a range of hot food is available. There is obviously a lot that goes on at this pub from live music to darts matches. Most note-worthy of all was the spotless condition of the gents. Someone had been very busy with the Jif. The dogs were also very grateful for their complimentary biscuit treats!

Four of us dropped into the Stone Jug after a bracing walk around Cainhoe castle. We were made to feel really welcome and there was a great choice of sandwiches and baguettes on offer. These arrived quickly and were fabulous, resulting in four empty plates. My favourite being the sausage baguette accompanied by a bowl of brilliantly cooked chips. The drinks were great too. Well worth a visit. We will definitely be back next time we are in the area. Highly recommended.

It's often a problem with Trip Advisor that the same place can have two separate listings - whoever submitted the first notification getting the location or the name slightly wrong seems to be the main reason. So there are two lots of reviews for this pint-sized boozer, one of which seems to think it's in faraway Bedford, but the verdict on both is consistent - it's a jewel of a community pub stuck in a slightly hard to find location off the A6 between Luton and Bedford, it's been in the same family for donkey's years, the beer is top notch, the atmosphere is friendly, and the food is plain and simple and scrumptious. There are some pubs where you know you're onto a winner as soon as you stop through the door - it's a combination of atmosphere, clientele, furnishings, whatever, but you know it when you feel it and it is here in spades. Some reviewers say what's on the menu is a bit basic - come on, this is not pretending to be a specialist restaurant and when we popped in for a Thursday lunch there were plenty of people hoovering up good value lunches cooked on the premises.Have a simple sausage sandwich - it's got good sausages (local sourced meat is a point of pride) and lovely fluffly bread, and a bit of salad on the side, and that's it. Slaver on some HP sauce and it's hard to beat.Across the table the order was for a longboat - no idea why it's called that, but it seems to the speciality of the house. Think a jacket potato, but instead of the jacket it's potato skins - looked more substantial than skins to me - with a choice of toppings. Chicken curry was insanely generous, huge chunks of chicken poured over with a pretty safe commercial sauce and it really hit the mark on an autumn day. Chips and salad on the side were a bit much for a light lunch, but that just meant chips for me.At the next table two gents tucked into a good-looking chicken pie and veg and a monster omelette and went on to syrup pudding and custard, which gives you a good idea what's on the menu.No lunches on Sunday or Monday, lots of special events, regular CAMRA award winner, and a popular stop with walkers. If it was my local I would be well pleased.

I'll keep it short and simple; if you want to find a proper English pub then look no further. Just off the A6 a few miles outside Bedford. Excellent local beers - well kept - friendly service and decent and well priced pub grub - not Gastro but that's not relevant here. One of my top 5 pubs in Bedfordshire.

This is an old style proper country pub which is a free house. Nice clean loos. Really good home cooked pub grub, nothing special just hearty and homemade and good prices. Absolutely buzzing with locals, but also very welcoming to incomers (albeit in a sometimes wry, but inoffensive to us way). Dogs very welcome and given treats. We will definitely go back - there are very few of this true type of pub left. If you're going out of you way to visit and dine, I would recommend making a reservation as all tables ended up being taken on our visit.

What a good place to fun as we fled the M1 on a bank holiday. Welcoming, friendly customers and staff, the opposite of everything to dislike about motorway services. We always detour off M-ways for meals and sometimes it's a mistake, but not this time. A really enjoyable experience. The food is pub food at very fair prices. It was fresh-cooked but took little time to arrive. All in all, another good experience of venturing off the motorways at lunchtime.

We called in for a post dinner drink after eating at the green man and ending up staying all night. On the night we visited they had a DJ on. Don't know if this is normal for a Friday night or a one off special but we enjoyed the mix of 80s and 90s music. My hubbys a real ale fan and this pub had a good selection and he enjoyed sampling quite a few. Its a lovely old stone pub in a beautiful village and the local seemed quite friendly too. I returned to The Stone Jug after seven years and found it to be as I remembered. I don't think the furniture or patrons had changed. since my last visit. The lunchtime menu includes all the pub grub favourites such as, home made pie and chips, fish and chips, bangers and mash to name just a few, their bacon and egg sandwiches are just yum. Having lived in a nearby village for many years, my wife spotted a sign for the Stone Jug off the main A6. Wow what a discovery, a small welcoming village pub with friendly staff and a wide, and affordable menu. I live in the village so I go up there whenever I can, this Pub is consistently good, there is always a great choice of real ales for those who like that kind of thing and lager for those who don't. There is always a friendly welcome and they get lots of visitors and walkers on a sunny day. I like the fact that whilst there is a juke box it does not dominate the pub, indeed you can't hear it most evenings as people a busy putting the world to rights and other conversations.A great pub for that traditional English pub experience, good choice of beer, good company and a warm welcome, what more could you want.

Firstly, this is a restaurant review, but the Stone Jug is a pub through and through which serves food. It's also a very, very good pub even if you don't eat, as long as you're not looking for ice-cold lager, uniforms, Farrow and Ball paintwork, and decisions made at head office off a roundabout in Reading. Five real ales normally on, old wooden tables, real games like darts, and vague but friendly service from bar staff who possibly saw service themselves. As regards the food, there's a slightly over-long menu of pub grub favourites (always suspicious of places with too many offerings - they can't all be made fresh), all priced below £10. Quantity possibly slightly beats quality, but both are pretty high. And what we've eaten in there (we've been three or four times) always looks and tastes like it arrived on the premises in its constituent ingredients rather than in a Brake Bros. truck. (Possibly because the car park was designed around the Ford Anglia and no truck could ever make it in or out again - be warned).Pub grub done well.
