Another wonderful lunch for my Dad’s birthday - thank you to everyone involved. This is a family owned and run place and those that aren’t family act like they are (Colin!) they all care they go the extra mile they want you to have a good experience and love the place like they do and come back - it shows in spades from the moment you step inside no I’m wrong from the moment you ring to book. Go try it you won’t be disappointed the food is great (family cooked on the premises no boil in the bag here) the real ales are award winning the building is full of character but the people make it.

Incredibly efficient and helpful! I needed to purchase a gift voucher and had a very quick reply back to my initial email (within 20 minutes) and the most “can do” approach in getting this issued and paid for. Utterly delighted with the customer service. Incredibly refreshing and all the accolades are clearly richly deserved. Thank you!

We travelled here from our B&B in Melton Mowbray and were delighted to have been recommended by our hostess. We were given a warm welcome and the service throughout was excellent. The menu choices were great, the food arrived promptly and was of good quality at reasonable prices. We would have no hesitation in recommending.

Travelled an hour to meet with some old friends for lunch with my wife over Easter purely by chance that it was the only place we could find that was open half way between us both over the bank holiday, and I must say we were all pleasantly surprised. It has an old-timey pub ambience to it without also feeling dated, and when you enter you're met with the scent of the burnt wood from the fire place without it overpowering the senses. The food was delicious and reasonably priced, and the staff were so friendly considering we aren't locals which has been a problem for us in the past with other pubs. I look forward to the next time get to visit, it was an absolute delight.

A group of six friends decided to lunch here mainly on the recommendation of one of said group. We forego the starters and went straight for mains. Fish, duck, Turkey and lasagne, all home cooked, vegetables and chips on the table. Tasty and beautifully cooked, and a bonus for me was gluten free battered cod. Five people had puds which looked delicious. Service was exceptional. Would have no hesitation in recommending this village pub and will definitely return, but I will take gluten free crackers with me so I could have the cheese!

Visited for lunch today for the first time and were very impressed. The home cooked food was excellent (we both had the steak and kidney pie) and although we don't usually have desert we decided to as these were also home made, we weren't disappointed. The family who run the pub are all very friendly and we will definitely go back.

The "Stilton Cheese" pub is but a 3 minutes walk from our holiday accommodation, therefore so easy to get there. A good start. But there is something magical about the "Stilton Cheese" .. it is a lovely, traditional, family-run pub, serving delicious freshly-prepared food .. that sets it above so many pubs! Our regret was that we could not visit as often as we did whilst on holiday .. we will do so more often next time we are in the area.

A short distance from where we are staying along lovely country lanes we arrived at The Stilton Cheese a family run pub which turned out to have excellent food. We had the soups for starters followed by bangers and mash cooked to perfection by the grandfather of the family and a healthy quiche with salad washed down by a cold French Chablis. The staff are incredibly friendly, efficient and professional and the price was quite reasonable. A nice touch was all the different Stilton jars on the windowsills.

(Incorectly posted this for erong pub initially) Visited this pub whilst staying locally at Eye Kettleby Lakes. The pub has a fantastic country pub feel and has been run by the same people for the last 29 years. Kept as a traditional pub, serves excellent food and well kept local ales. Had a starter of Choix Buns filled with stilton cheese served with onion chutney followed by mozerella filled pork fillet served with buttered potatos and vegetable. The beer I sampled was a 5.1% Ten Fifty, a real ale from local Oakham brewery. Wished this was closer but as regular visitors to EKL we will definitely be back to this fantastic pub. Great ambience, lovely food and beers and very friendly owners. Also dog friendly.

I have visited the Stilton Cheese several times over a number of years. Yesterday I was with friends on a cycle ride. I had pre-booked a table for 1:30 but we arrived 15 minutes late - our fault entirely. The welcome we received was genuinely friendly and we were ever so gently reminded that we needed to order before 2:00pm. I only mention this because of the way the reminder was given was an absolutely perfect example of customer service. Our drinks were served promptly, three were soft drinks but I thoroughly enjoyed a pint of Marston’s Pedigree. This is one of my favourite beers and I can honestly say that I’ve never had better. The beer was in perfect condition and temperature. It was a credit to whoever manages the cellar. We picked our food from the quite extensive menu (see the website). It was served without any significant delay. Everything was piping hot, except the salad! The portions were more than ample and were served with a bowl of chips and vegetables to share. It’s difficult to pinpoint what makes this pub so good; Is it the food, the drinks, the atmosphere? The answer, I believe, is the people running the place. They deliver in every aspect. The Stilton Cheese is an excellent example of a perfect English country pub. Too many of these are disappearing from the landscape and they deserve our custom to keep them going. I have no hesitation in recommending it.

We took friends here for dinner last night. The atmosphere was, as always, welcoming, with a lovely fire. The food was all delicious and the service unobtrusive and friendly. Three of us had the duckling, which is a favourite of mine here. Nobody ever leaves here hungry. Lots of different veg, always appear. We all had delicious desserts too. We were promising our friends a quiet, slot-machine-free meal. Unfortunately, this was not the case. There was noisy man already esconced at the bar when we arrived. He had a loud, penetrating voice and was still at it when we left. The owner can’t really do much about this and I would still give the Stilton Cheese my five star rating but next time, I will ask to be seated well away from the bar area. We have always been able to hear ourselves talk until last night.

Very ancient Country pub…Large seating /eating area near the bar Quiz night so busy and comfortably noisy! They were shunted off to another separate dining room. Welcoming log fire and the 4 of us sat very cozily near. Menu was extensive but we were impressed by Chalk board full of Specials ….Lots of choice ! I had sliced Duck breast with Cherry jus… tasty. Efficient table service, food delivered hot with side dishes of vegetables. Generous portions. Desserts brought forth were of high standard. Delicious French Almond tart, Hotcross bun & butter pudding, Profiteroles ….. again large portions. Value for money indeed. We like this Pub and visit it after a long walk in the surrounding countryside. The place was busy on the Sunday we last went in February. The gentleman who served us drinks was distracted by everything else going on in the bar and took 10mins to provide our 2 sodas. One was flat and at nearly £6 these were expensive. I ordered the tortellini au gratin, where I expected the pasta to be in a cheese sauce, it wasn't, it was in a tomato sauce with a shaving on cheese on top, which was disappointing. I'll choose better when we next visit as the food here is normally very good.

Had the mushroom starter, lasagna for main and profiteroles for dessert. The entire meal felt like it was pre-cooked and reheated for service. The breaded mushrooms were rock-solid on the outside and watery on the inside. The lasagna was cold on the inside and luke warm on the outside. (It tasted more like a cottage pie than a lasagna) I accept that a lot of pubs and restaurants are under-staffed these days but for the prices they're charging, you expect better quality. Very disappointed. Will not be returning.

This is an unmodernised pub thank goodness with a rural village feel to it and , I’m told , very good beers. There are flowers in abundance by the door and an outside patio area, I had the best sausage, mash & gravy I have had for ages and my cousin and his wife had a meat lasagne and a vegetarian lasagne with generous bowl of vegetables and crisp chips. All enjoyable. The dessert menu looked good but we were too full to try something but come winter appetite likely to increase. We came here for lunch on a Wednesday with our Dog on the recommendation of Kettleby Lakes where we were staying. It was a rainy day and dogs are not permitted inside so we took a table under the covered patio area. The patio is surrounded by lush foliage and even has a quaint old bar hand pump to dispense water for the dogs bowl. The staff were very friendly and helpful and given how old and cosy this small pub is the Covid measures in place were excellent and well thought out. I had a sandwich which was disappointingly on standard sliced bread rather than a chunky fresh artisan loaf that many pubs offer these days. It was unfortunate as the fresh ham and cheese inside were lovely and it would have really complimented a thick bloomer or similar instead. My partner had the Stilton Ploughmans to which the cheese was delicious but again the pickled onion, salad and bread cob was little dated in its presentation. A smaller mixed cheese Ploughmans with a slice of ham, local pork pie and scotch egg along with the other items would have been worth paying a little extra for had it been an option. We both had a side of chips which was huge and certainly kept us going for the afternoons activities. I think we maybe just chose badly as the fish and chips the table next to us looked fantastic. This isnt a negative review by any means and just my opinion on how good food could be made even better and its such lovely place that we'd happy return, minus dog, on a cold winters night to sit by the fire.

Following a bit of a hostile rebuttal from "the management" last year I have stayed away from the Stilton Cheese. Alright you can read into what I write, but it is only meant as a gentle prod at a pub I have great affection for. With a couple of mates I went back in January for an early evening pint. As ever there were regular and guest ales, this is no more remarkable than any other pub between Oakham and Melton. Quite why CAMRA keep endorsing the Stilton is a bit of a mystery. Its just normal nowadays. The welcome by the bar staff really does vary, effusive if it’s a woman, surly if it’s male. Despite being generally friendly the locals, who lay siege to the bar, get narky if you have the temerity to try and get served. In fairness the bar staff are good at serving over their heads, even so it creates a little bit of an atmosphere. We had a quiet few drinks, didn’t eat, and soaked up the vibes. The Stilton probably is a good local in the old-fashioned sense, and that is the problem, it is old. The décor needs drastic attention, its cluttered and uncomfortable. The brown furniture needs burning and gallons of white paint applied to the walls. That’s effort, which frankly I don’t see the current management expending. Sat at a table facing the windows the most obvious thing to do is take the net curtains down. That will instantly catapult the pub from the 1970s to the 1980s. Portraying the Stilton Cheese as a traditional family run country pub is simply another way of saying its old and tired. That might be the way the locals and landlord like it, but the vast majority of drinkers and diners expect better. I fear for the future of this pub, especially now there is more competition locally. We had several perfectly acceptable pints and left to eat elsewhere, AKA the 21st Century.

We went for Sunday lunch for four. It was a disappointing experience overall, with some good bits and some of the other sort. we found it good on average, hence the score, but that doesn't mean much or tell the story. I will try to be objective. This is a 70's pub, and doubtless a lovely local. The decor has changed little in that time (I used to go there then) and not much has been spent on the place since. The "dining room", dining area really, is cramped, dark and dated. But it isnt a local, its an eating pub, and the two have not mixed. It was very busy, but more than that really, it was overcrowded. Too many people have been crammed in, it seemed they are trying to get a quart into a pint pot. The menu is large and varied, with some dishes quite good (e.g. salmon beautifully cooked but bland), some quite amateurish (cottage pie), dreadful side salad and no seasoning on the veg. There was no Sunday lunch left at 130, though we were warned they were busy, but a full other menu was on offer. Value for money is not bad, average main cost about £12 but then again there are nice Sunday lunches out there for a good bit less. Service was OK, the ladies who served us were nice, but you have to go to the counter, and climb between a line of locals having a lunch-time pint, who were reluctant to move. I think the business has lost its identity. Someone has tried to graft current eating trends onto an old fashioned scenario, and it hasn't worked. The pictures on the website are misleading and anyone going for a family meal, especially at the weekend, needs to be wary. If I were a local I might well have a different view, but I'm not.

Visited here on a Monday lunchtime as so many other pubs are closed on Mondays and its somewhere we hadn't tried before. The pub web site and photos really dont do the place justice, its far nicer in the flesh. The web site had actually put us off going! Its a lovely traditional old style pub with a really good atmosphere. We had a really friendly welcome (especially from the pub cat) and enjoyed our scampi & chips. There is a well stocked bar with a good choice of real ales, wines and malt whiskeys. The food is a good standard and good value and there is an amazing choice of home made puddings. The only negative is that they are not dog friendly. This is understandable as its not the biggest of pubs and the pub cat would not approve. Dogs are allowed outside. All in all a great pub and highly recommended.

We ate lunch here as a party of seven; between us our choices covered a large selection of the menu and we were all pleased with our food for both main courses and desserts, except the apple crumble which wasn't particularly to our taste. The food arrived very hot and in generous portions and was exactly as you would hope for in a country pub. There is an interesting choice of local real ales at the bar and a nice, good value selection of wine available. There was a large choice of daily specials on the blackboard, including veggie options and a straightforward menu of well executed pub grub. The decor was that of a truly authentic country pub, with some lovely old features. What really makes this pub stand out however is the warmth and generous hospitality of the landlady who is a charming and friendly lady and it was a real pleasure to spend time in her lovely pub.

A friend of mine recommended the Stilton because of the welcome he received from the landlord and landlady, who are keen to encourage LGBT+ patrons. I am a big fan of this batty little boozer and it’s somewhat idiosyncratic drinkers, but would have assumed they might be a bit uncomfortable with more modern and liberal lifestyles, but not one bit. During my visit last week Geoff the landlord said he is planning a cabaret night in October. Wonderful pub that never fails to delight. Again I found myself in the neighbourhood of “the Stilton” this time with some rugby chums, so I suggested we had a lunchtime repast at this quaint old exemplar of an English inn. Upon arrival the jocular landlord was out of his box like a starved whippet with a run down of the cosmic range of light, tangy and refreshing guests ales, Inferno, Endless Summer, Citra, Newby Wyke, you name it, they had it, all backed up by the fall-back regulars for those who don’t appreciate good beer. A quick round of free nips was very welcome, if a bit unnecessary, as we were going to sample them all in this session. Jeff the Landlord was amazing, he has the conviviality and disposition of one who knows how to both partake and purvey of his brew. The family vibe was maintain by the womanly presence of mother and daughter catering to every need of the assembled throng. As usual the resident whacky locals crammed the bar in good hearted cheer, with friendly witticism for anyone willing to engage in casual banter. The odd fellow with a false eye was particularly entertaining. Does anyone work in Somerby? We took a table in the crowded dining area and were attended to promptly by a divine waitress, who could not have been more friendly. I enquired if she was part of the family running the pub, which she was not. Word of warning here, she suggested we did not tip as it only went to make up her wages. Please note HMRC this is unsubstantiated. Our food was sensational, the complimentary rustic bread and olive oil was matched by the abundant sides we were served. Expect copious amounts of fresh veg, salads, a variety of potatoes and extravagant pots of sauce with your mains. I have to be honest the generosity was incredible, it is no wonder people travel for miles to dine here. We spoke to visitors from Lancashire, Devon and Scotland, all of whom were first time visitors on the strength of this pub’s reputation. We ate and drank all afternoon, were entertained by the wonderfully hospitable landlord and his family, caroused with the raucous locals and finished with a combined tab of less than £100 for four. This place is simply lovely, get in there and support it. Only downside is the tiny car park that gets snarled up by the grey brigade. Park on the Main Street opposite the pub to avoid bumper scuffs when Doris backs the Skoda out.

Somerby is a pretty village in the heart of Stilton Country and the inn that bears the name of it's famous product, does it rather proud. A traditional pub on the High Street, with parking behind, the interior is very much of the genre, warm & hospitable. A well stocked bar, with a good selection of ales & spirits, overlooks a roomy dining area, suitable for both small groups and couples. The menu reflects typical, good country "pub grub" with a decent selection for most tastes. My fish pie was really good, tasty, succulent chunks of salmon, great sauce & a creamy, lightly toasted, mash topping - standard thin chips & veg on the side. My companion enjoyed his steak & ale pie too and both of us, the "hoppy" guest ale. Staff and service were spot on. Just right, as every table occupied on a midweek lunchtime, testified. All in all, a very pleasant inn, well run.

Last week I visited this pub with a lady who is confined to a powered wheelchair. The pub is cramped and it was difficult to find a place to sit without upsetting the regulars who dominate the bar area. My friend felt quite uncomfortable. The problem is the layout of the pub, which has far too many unused dining tables. However, the biggest problem is the lack of accessible toilets. The pub has recently rebuilt the floor using flagstones, but did not take the opportunity to make the toilets wheelchair accessible. Getting to the loo is impossible as you have to climb steps and then negotiate two very tight turns. Both ladies and gents are tiny and there is no-way a wheelchair user could manoeuvre into the cubicle. It is a great shame because there is a lot of redundant space in this pub where a fully accessible facility could be installed. The experience was further diminished because we could not enjoy the sunny weather in the pretty beer garden we could tantalisingly view from the bar. There are two impassible steps out of the bar to the beer garden, which could easily be adapted to create a slope for wheelchair users. This is an obvious and easy improvement. Currently people with accessibility needs have to park in the car park and make their way down the side of the pub along the road where there is no pavement, this is actually quite dangerous. You can pull up and block the road to avoid this, but again it means getting out on the road. This is what we did and we clearly inconvenienced a departing patron, who became visibly agitated at having to wait and mounted the verge opposite in anger. We did gently point this out to the landlady, who was a little irritated and dismissive. Despite the generous reviews about this pub being a “welcoming family pub” it’s actually now very dated and not meeting modern needs and expectations, certainly my friend felt very uncomfortable and is thinking about writing a letter to the local council to make the pub do improvements.

After a splendid visit last month and the news of the CAMRA award for the pub I thought I would return with some seriously discerning drinker friends. We were greeted by the nice bar maid, who interrupted her manicure to flash us a smile, a hearty “hi” and a gratifying dollop of hospitality. All very Darling Buds. She them gave us a comprehensive run down of the various cask ales, I have to be honest I think she was reading it off the back of the pump clips. Still it is easy to see why the beardy CAMRA gang are so enchanted. For us though it was a bit disappointing, mainly they focus on weak, pale and flat “drinks.” We had Grainstore 10/50, a staple of the more dedicated boozer, and it was brilliant. I highly recommend this quiet pub, it’s charm is obvious but sadly fading though. Visit whilst you can.

Staying locally and did a lot of research to find a good dog friendly pub for an evening meal, drove 30 minutes to get there and was really disappointed when turned away as not dog friendly. Please remove yourself from dog friendly pub guides such as the one we used ‘dog friendly together’ to avoid others being disappointed.

At the last moment we were accommodated in the smaller of two dining areas. The menu, whilst not extensive without the addition of some mouthwatering specials, had something for everyone. Service was efficient and pleasant, there was a good atmosphere and it was good value for money. Obviously family run and popular with locals. Sat nav directions weren’t to the door so just keep going. Parking difficult in an odd shaped car park but street parking available. We parked in the nearby village hall, don’t know if we were allowed! Excellent visit.

Whilst travelling through Rutland I popped into the Stilton Cheese because I recalled how many reviews recommend it as a “family run pub.” I was not disappointed! The plate above the door suggested it was owned by a family. Sure enough once inside there was ample “ma and pa” making the place amazingly Waltonesque. The welcome by the genial homely landlord was redolent of yesteryear, it was just like being invited into someone’s home. I left with a warm fuzzy feeling that has yet to fade. I little slice of homespun comfort in this charming little hobbit hole.

It's a proper Family run pub. The head chef has created some delicious meals and you can take your pick from all kinds of beer. No wonder it keeps winning CAMRA awards. If you want a true taste of the best of Britain then head for this pub. You won't be disappointed. Oh and Domino the cat will stare you out of a treat or two!

Simply a tucked away gem which was found thanks to trip advisor. Specials board has a huge range. Friendly attentive staff. Home cooked foods, not mass produced garbage zapped in a microwave. Parking is a bit on the limited side however you’re in a stunning small village, cannot be helped. Wild mushroom and chestnut lasagne was to die for, as well as sticky toffee pudding.

I have visited several times. It's a bit out of the way but well worth the effort. Lynne in the bar is always friendly and happy to offer advice on the best real ales on offer. The food is excellent and always good value with a specials board that is changed regularly. Despite it's rural location it can get busy and it's always worth booking a table.

All food is freshly cooked to order and portions are generous. It is a friendly, family run pub with a good atmosphere and located in a beautiful part of the county. What's not to like?

Second visit to this real gem of a country pub. Excellent selection of beers and guest beers and the food is outstanding. The 3 meals we had, the halibut, swordfish and liver and bacon were all brilliant. Service was great and made us really feel at home. A good job this isn't my local pub as I would be in every night.

I used to eat here.when a family member lived in Somerby. I was looking forward to sampling thier food again and I was not disappointed. As usual it was clear that we were welcome as soon as we entered. The servers were attentive and friendly. The food was amazing I personally had the Sword fish and having had a starter could not eat it all but the young lady who was looking after us happily put the remainder in a takeaway box for me. I couldn't manage a sweet but the rest of the group had one and it all looked amazing. The price was very good and the portion size was great.

Looking for lunch, came across The Stilton Cheese. Very warm welcome, we sat outside with our dog, there was a water bowl for him. Ordered from the specials board, good selection. The steak and kidney pie was almost as good as mine and the monkfish Thermidor was original and delicious. The vegetables, good selection, tasted like they should and cooked properly, non of this almost raw stuff. We had to have one of the homemade desserts each, there was some original dishes listed. As hoped for they were also delicious, what a treat to find a family business that works. We would go back if in the area again.

Went back for a meal last weekend after a failed attempt to eat there a couple of months ago. Ordered steaks, which were probably a bit over done, but they were quite big and tasty especially with the peppercorn sauce. Veg portions were good, but chips were from a packet which is not at all acceptable for even pub grub nowadays. Love the puddings though, had a great big stodgy pudding with proper custard. Excellent selection of real ales, but ordering at the bar and generally getting noticed was problematic. Still not sure about having a cat wandering around even if other people seem to like it. It's definitely worth a visit, but if you are making a special visit to the area there are better destinations close by.

I booked lunch here last week for my entire Italian Group. There were eight of us. Wi had been slightly dubious about being given a table in the bar, thinking that it would be too noisy. I needn't have worried as the pub wasn't full, it being Monday. The owner speaks fluent Italian, which added to our enjoyment. The service and the food were spot on. Most of us chose asparagus starter and the duck main. These were delicious and there was plenty of meat, with lots of fresh vegetables plus a bowl of chips. Those who had asparagus starter followed by steak were equally impressed. There's an extensive dessert list but none of us could manage one!Lots of interesting Specials on the board and a permanent menu, too. I defy you not to find lots of dishes you like. It's a favourite place in which to dine.

I’ve visited The Royal Oak quite a few times, and it never fails to impress. The food, service, and atmosphere are consistently fabulous. Every visit is brilliant. I brought my family for Sunday lunch today, and we had an absolutely wonderful experience. Pat and Bini, the owners, are incredibly welcoming, which makes the experience even more special. I absolutely love this pub and can’t recommend it highly enough. A huge thank you to the entire team at the Royal Oak!

The place looks good and it nice inside with entertainment but the food is not good at all we had two chicken wraps and baguette melts that were not melted or warm they were cold and also we had a even bigger breakfast with hashbrowns, sausage and bacon is cooked enough and my personal self had a mixed gril the gammon was bland with no taste and the chicken was stone cold and steak wasn't too bad but disappointed is a understatement and the service was poor we tried to get servers attention twice and was blanked and it just felt depressing it wasn't nice so this why I give this a 2 star this is a genuine review it isn't good for food.

Rustic historic pub in the centre of Melton Mowbray, drinks priced reasonably and a lovely beer garden for when the weather is nice. Staff are friendly too, great atmosphere in the winter (very cosy and homely). Highly recommend if you're visiting Melton Mowbray and want to enjoy a nice drink in a traditional pub

We popped in for a drink on our wedding day between the ceremony and reception and it was one of our favourite parts of the day. They accommodated a large booking at short notice for our family to have Sunday lunch the following day and couldn’t do enough for us. The food was great and the staff and owners just lovely. We’ll certainly be back!
