The Staveley Arms in Harrogate

It was a reasonably quiet Friday night at this bar (with designs on being a restaurant bar), given that it was freezing cold and snow was forecast. The Wagyu Burger and Chips was really tasty and I was happy to pay £20+ for burger, chips and onion rings - but there must be a shortage of either cutlery or staff (or both) in North Stainley; the poor woman behind the bar never drew breath, every drinks order seemed to take an age, and the food was served without cutlery or a napkin, plus the onion rings were cold. There are plenty of burger joints where I'd be happy, even expect to eat with my fingers, but not in an establishment with such high standards. I've visited The Staveley Arms several times previously and always had decent service and nice food (loved the bangers and mash for lunch the last time I visited). Hopefully, whatever went wrong can be corrected because this pub-restaurant has a great roaring fire, nice selection of drinks and a lovely atmosphere.

We stayed across the road at The Old Coach House and came over for dinner. What a great pub, food was excellent and well priced. The place had a real cosy welcoming feel. Log burner Christmas decorations and super beer. All the staff were very friendly, wish this was our local. Next trip to Harrogate we are staying across the road again and having another meal here. We will be back

We went for Sunday lunch, we had two courses, it’s one of the best if not the best Sunday lunch we’ve had! The roast beef and Yorkshire puddings were superb, cooked to perfection with interesting vegetables and delicious roast potatoes. Whilst the majority of staff were young ladies, they were so attentive led by I presume the proprietor John; only slight criticism would be, we were asked what drinks we would like before we sat down and had an opportunity to look at the drinks menu, but we put that down to an eagerness to please . We will definitely revisit when next in the area. Well done for a very pleasing experience.

50 minute wait for our meal, come on guys. Didn’t order anything different to what was on the menu, but the kitchen didn’t seem to be getting their act together

I booked this for my partners birthday meal as we were staying across the road at the Old Coach Inn. We arrived and first impressions were really good...lovely country pub vibe... we ordered drinks and then lady came to take our order... I ordered the blue cheese Eccles cake and my partner the scallops... I could hardly cut through mine it was so hard the pastry...so I re ordered thinking it was just over cooked only for the 2nd to be the same..hard with hardly any filling! My partners scallops were so burnt they wouldn't come out of their shells... such a shame.. at this point my partners birthday meal was ruined so we asked for bill... the lady apologised and gave us the drinks on the house...as a gesture of goodwill... such a shame!

We had our wedding reception and meal here on Saturday 21st September 2024 and everything was amazing from start to finish. John was incredibly helpful from the very first meet to discus the plans, the lead up and on the day. He was absolutely incredible as was the food and his team. I would highly recommend! Held my son's 18th birthday party here last week and the evening was a huge success. From setting the date right up to end of the night John Heidi Hannah and the team couldn't do enough to help with everything! Would highly recommend for any event 😀

Went for a special 40th Wedding Anniversary meal for my parents. 8 of us in total with a dog. Staff were exceptionally friendly, the atmosphere of the Staveley Arms is very nice. Good choice of steating indoor and outdoor. John looked after us through out of visit, he was very friendly and approachable. We all felt very welcomed and comfortable. John was very good and got a water bowl for our dog as well as being very accommodating for requests for our 1 yr old son. The food was lovely, everyone enjoyed their meals. There was a good selection of menus to choose from, we had a thoroughly enjoyable time, and would come back again. Thank you again to John and the staff of the Staveley arms.

After reading good reviews I wanted to treat the family to lunch out. Excellent hospitality, from the start to finish. Food was exceptional and I’m a foodie! My husband had the pork with bubble and squeak, with glazed carrots and a cider jus. Bubble and squeak, perfect seasoning that complimented the slightly sweeter cider jus. Pork was so soft and carrots to die for! Daughter had the sea bass and absolutely loved it! I had (I eat smaller potions) the chicken Caesar salad, and when I wish i could have given it 10/10 it was missing the garlic croutons 🥹 I didn’t say anything at the time as I don’t like to complain, but also that I had looked at so many menus that morning, I forgot if it said in the menu it was included! It would have been 10/10 if they had been included! We will be back!!

Warm welcome. Lovely food. Specials menu available in addition to regular menu. All staff extremely friendly and attentive without being overboard. We had 2 starters from the specials and 2 main courses from the regular menu. All were delicious. Prices in the main are pretty average with the exception of cheese and biscuits. £11 for three slithers ( really poor portions) of cheese, a few crackers, a small toasted fruit loaf slice, chutney and 4 grapes!! Wouldn't recommend that as a dessert option.

Travelling north for work on the A1(M) and didn’t want to end up having my evening meal at the services. Found the Staveley Arms on Tripadvisor. Only 4 miles from the motorway. Easy to find and plenty of parking when I arrived. Warm welcome from the staff at the bar. Nice decor inside. Customer service was wonderful, super attentive but not in your face. Varied menu with several veggie dishes, and well priced. Didn’t get to try the beer as driving. Food was delicious, portion size was spot on so I didn’t feel bloated when I got back in the car. I was back on the motorway in just over an hour. If this is your local pub please visit often - where I live we have lost our local small hotel and pub to a luxury chain and it is now overpriced with poor customer service and no atmosphere. If you like your pub, use it or lose it.

Having visited yesterday (1st June 24) we were sat down and told that they had some staffing issues in the kitchen so food would be a little bit of a wait (emphasis on little), we didn't realise a little bit meant 1 hour and 15 minutes to make 5, fairly simple meals. We got our drinks quickly and then were just left, and left, and left. Other tables around us also complained but the waitress who was taking bookings on the phone was still telling people it was 'only about a 40 minute wait'. When the food did arrive, it was certainly not worth waiting an hour and 15 for, the pies were watery and flavourless, the chickenburger lacklustre and served with greasy chips. None of us finished our meals. The Manager on shift was rude and abrupt, verging on aggressive, talking over us and just repeating the same issue without actually listening to what we were saying, also stating there have never been bad reviews on the pies, other reviews on here would speak differently so I'd recommend she read her own reviews. Add-ons for the burger outrageous - £2.50 for a slice of cheese that was virtually non existent is shocking. I've been recommended this pub before and was looking forward to the meal but would never return following on from this experience, it's probably one of the worst I've ever had. The restaurant did take most of the awful food off the bill, which we then paid cash and walked out only to be chased out of the car park being accused of not paying by the equally rude and arrogant waitress that had originally served us. Not a welcoming experience and judging by some of the other reviews not a one off either.

A busy Friday night so we had booked a table in advance. Service was a bit slow, the volume from other diners high and the air con was a bit ferocious. Two couples dined, 2 had a starter and a main and 2 had a main and a dessert. Everything was OK, but menu was fairly standard for a pub restaurant and despite some rave reviews that were the reason for booking, we were a little underwhelmed.

If I could leave 6 stars, I would. From the welcome my wife and I received, to the food and atmosphere, and finally the assistance I was given getting to the car in the pouring rain (I am disabled), everything was excellent. Thank you John and all your colleagues

A roast beef Sunday lunch at a pub is a British staple and any place should be able to turn out a decent meal but sadly I've been disappointed so many times with tough meat and potatoes like stones, I tend to choose something else. I'm glad we visited The Staveley Arms a few days before and tried a couple of well-executed small plates, which gave me confidence to book Sunday lunch yesterday. And I'm sooo pleased we did: beef was absolutely top-quality - moist, flavoursome, melt-in-the-mouth - potatoes had just the right crunch with a hot fluffy middle and believe it or not, the best carrot and swede I've tasted (having avoided it since school!). All really set up well with a refreshing avocado and crab tart starter. Friendly, engaging service, delightful atmosphere, in a lovely setting just a few minutes from Ripon.

Stayed at the Old Coach House just over the road and it was great to see the pub open once again. We had dinner there on 2 nights and all the meals were exceptional. The staff were very welcoming and I would thoroughly recommend this as a venue eat or just for a drink. Thanks to John ands the team for a wonderful experience.

Such a gorgeous pub with beautiful food! Our second visit whilst on holiday in the area, Emma went above and beyond with our little boy who is normally very shy and a little unsettled in new places. Wonderful service and just a lovely visit from start to finish, we will without a doubt be back!

We stumbled across this place whilst staying at the nearby campsite. Originally we were planning to look at the other 2 pubs in the other direction, but as they say, things happen for a reason! We are so glad that we did. We had a lovely meal, they were very accommodating to my mum’s dietary needs as certain foods disagree with her. Everything was fresh. The menu is limited but there is enough to choose from if you are fussy like me. I wanted the steak and ale pie but it was sold out so ended up with steak! It was delicious! When we had finished our dinner we sat on the sofa with a lovely warm fire simmering away whilst my mum had her coffee and I sipped on a cask ale. My step dad was happy too as he could drink lots of cask ale!

Excellent from start to finish. We were a group of 4 adults and 4 children. We arrived early for our 5.30 table and we’re warmly welcomed by the staff. The chef started our order early so that we weren’t waiting around - a really nice touch. The food was fantastic (fish was huge with really crispy batter and chunky hand cut chips and the cod loin was melt in your mouth). The kids meals were incredible value - home cooked meals with a dessert included for £9. The service was brilliant and the atmosphere calm and welcoming. We’ll certainty be back next time we pass through.

What a fantastic find! Good selection of beers on offer (as well as wines, laters and even a few cocktails). I had the pork scratchings while looking at the menu. Belly pork teriyaki started and then pie and chips for main. My wife had the butternut squash risotto. All absolutely spot on. Enjoyed the quiz as well as a bonus.

We have just returned home from a short break. We stopped across the road from the pub and ate there both nights. We have never been anywhere else that gave us such a warm friendly welcome. All the members of staff were extremely friendly and made us both feel very welcome. The food was excellent. Would highly recommend this place to stop for a light refreshment or meal. The building is a delight. Would also like to thank Ian, Tom and Andy for allowing us to be part of your quiz team, maybe next time will win.

We joined a lunch party on Mother’s Day, and had the private dining room There were 10 adults and six children, and we were extremely well looked after It is a lovely place and the staff are very accommodating and very pleasant The food was excellent, and my only complaint in the source of way was that we were given too much I ordered the roast beef lunch and had four thick slices of beef +7 different vegetables, and an enormous Yorkshire pudding ! I’m sure they cater for Hungary, Yorkshireman here, but I was a little bit overwhelmed All the food was really tasty, and as I say, the staff were very pleasant The toilets are clean, and I recommend the Theakston’s Best Bitter

Just by chance passed this pub on the way out of Ripon, called in for food and came out well served and thoroughly impressed. Lovely looking pub from the outside, very comfortable inside and with the log burner going, the ambience was superb. The pub was well staffed, the girls being very courteous and professional, but the food made it a 10 out of 10 for us. The perfect country pub-restaurant, and if we buy chance are anywhere in the area, we'll be making a beeline for the Stavely Arms.

Third time visiting The Staveley Arms in the last 4 months and fast becoming one of my favourite local places to visit for a great dining experience. Really friendly and welcoming service, very pleasant atmosphere and some very good food. Without question, we will be back.

Visited with a friend, after hearing good things after it reopened. Beautiful pub and setting, what a lovely location. Plenty of parking and it is amazing inside. The food was fantastic, had the steak and ale pie, friend had the fish. Service was also top notch, very professional and attentive. Made it feel like you were in a very posh restaurant! Prices were very reasonable. Completely recommend this place, definitely returning!

Bit challenged on this one - it most likely lands at 3.5 not 3 but here's our reasons. We stayed in the accommodation across the road, so it was an easy choice to eat here. The food was ok. I had a chicken burger and my partner the pie. Chicken burger was decent but the kimchi coleslaw was tasteless. The pie was ok, but the greens were extremely salty and couldn't be eaten (just to point out we are not fussy eaters). What was most difficult to work out was the service. It seemed very confusing. Firstly I was put on the backfoot when the lady said she couldn't find us on the system. Panic set in thinking I had booked the wrong day. I checked my phone and showed her my confirmation email, to which 2 other members of staff had to come and find us on the system - no apology offered. We ordered and when our food arrived we didn't get the usual 5 minute later check in to see if our food was ok - which I think is a curtesy that all pubs/restaurant's follow. We were served by 3 different people, so lost that personal attention you normally get. I had mentioned on my booking that it was my partners birthday celebration and whilst we were not expecting a cake, I was asked by one of the staff if it was my partners birthday whilst I was on the way to toilet. I was expecting them to come over and wish her happy birthday or something but nothing. What was the point of asking me... when it was her birthday - very strange. The ambience was unusual to say the least. The menu is very limited and if its competing against other places to eat, I imagine that's going to be an issue. No specials at all. My suggestion would be to have a bar menu, and cater for that crowd, and/or an ala cartre gastro menu for diners. It feels like its trying to be a bit of everything. Look, it wasnt a bad experience and the place has lots of potential, we just left feeling rather bemused.

When we arrived we were shown to our table and were asked if we would like to order drinks, which we had delivered shortly afterwards. After waiting around 15 minutes for someone to take our food order we attracted the Restaurant Manager's attention to say we were ready, and were told that there was a backup in the kitchen, so there was no point taking our order as it wouldn't come any quicker. Why didn't someone tell us this before we ordered a bottle of wine? We then gave her our order. After waiting a further 35 minutes without any communication we decided to leave. By this time we had been sat at the table for 50 minutes. We asked for the bill and informed the Manager (a lady) why we were leaving, and at that point another Manager, an American man came over and started to get aggresive in his attitute and was remonstrating with us. He never once offered an apology. Judging by the reaction of another member of staff, who heard what had gone on, this didn't appear to be unusual and they actually apologised to us as we left. It's a shame we won't be going back whilst under the current management, as we alsways like to support local pubs when they are first starting out.

Great food, great service and reasonably priced. Our second visit this month and I would highly recommend this pub for family lunches.

Pre-booked lunch in restaurant area. Bright and airy space, tables well separated. We had mussels and terrine to start, both went for the pheasant for main and far too full for anything else! Beautifully cooked meals, good portion size and nicely presented. House pale ale was also very nice. Service was really good, attentive without being too fussy, and very friendly. From the warm welcome on entering this welcoming environment to leavingeverythjng was fantastic. A great range of drinks including cask ales was available. Tried the steak and ale pie which was both htaty and full of flavour. Followed this up with an apple tarte tatin and was exceptional. All in all fantastic service from all the team and will be visiting again soon
