Mid week family lunch. Varied menu displayed on the board. Meals were tasty if a little pricey. Very small bowl of whitebait with chips at extra cost. Cosy atmosphere with fire lit and rustic tables. Pleasant service too. A nice local pub. Dog friendly a bonus!

From arrival to departure we were made to feel welcome. When you’re a party of 4 adults two children of 5 and 21 months a dog and a 4 month old puppy this was fantastic. Games to play to keep the little ones entertained and a wonderful pirate ship to play on in the garden to burn some energy off it was a very enjoyable experience. Add to that lovely food and such welcoming hosts what’s not to like.

Staying in Steyning for four days The Star was our ‘local’ and what a local! Such a friendly reception from Emma the landlady on our first visit which was just for a drink made us go back for dinner the following evening. We sat outside in the warm summer evening and Emma bought over the menu board. We were expecting the usual pub food and had already chosen fish and chips in our head. But no the menu was completely different more like fancier gastro pubs but with a local pub price. We decided to go for Thai fish cakes, whitebait, a pommodora salad and halloumi fries. The plan was to share them all. They came piping hot with the most delicious accompanying salads. Honestly I’ve never eaten such delicious pub food. We are only here four nights and we are already thinking when we can come again before we leave. The service was friendly and fast. Drinks weren’t expensive either. A lovely local pub with amazing food.

I’ve now been here 3 times and greeted with the same dreadful service. Management just always seems like everything is a chore. Unhelpful, waited 10 minutes for bottle of Prosecco to be opened had to go get it myself. Pub was not even busy. Wanted food, told she’s just on a fag break be back in 15.why go on a fag beak when you have no other staff on!? Surely take the order and then go. Safe to say we drank our drinks and spent our money down the road and we won’t be returning. Such a same as has great potential. Just no customer service at all.

With lockdown easing off my wife and I were able to enjoy Sunday lunch again at the Star. My wife had the lamb and I had beef . Both were excellent, beautifully cooked and presented. My drink was the Downland Ale, why haven't I had this before? It was remarkable, smooth and full of flavour. A truly wonderful meal.

My friends and I unexpectantly ended up in Steyning for dinner whilst bike packing the South Downs Way, it was getting towards 7pm and we were very worried under the current climate that we wouldnt be able to find anywhere to eat. The landlady was immediately accomodating, she found us a table, charged our phones and even let us leave our bikes where we could see them in the garden. Having been out all day we were starving and the food was exactly what we needed, homemade burgers not fussy but very tasty. Lots of beer options meant we all left in a much better state of mind than when we arrived. The landlady even tried to find us a safe place to spend the night. Top hospitality at a very reasonable price

My partner, pooch and I had an amazing meal Friday night in The Stars newly renovated garden. We popped in for a quick drink to support one of our lovely locals after a dog walk and being hungry decided to have a starter before getting fish and chips on the way home. The antipasti platter that arrived was better presented than the one I had received at Brixton Market the day prior and brilliant value. It was so delicious the table next to us ordered one as they were jealous! We decided to stay for mains and again were blown away with the ribs and the crayfish pasta. My crayfish arrived with huge 3 langoustine on top with samphire and crayfish mixed into a beautiful sauce. The ribs were a great portion which fell off the bones. Sat under heaters with the option of hot water bottles, knowledgeable staff with a lovely service and knowing how expensive some of the ingredients are in both dishes was amazed at how reasonable the experience cost. Thank you so much for a wonderful meal in a relaxed, beautiful garden. Well done.

Located at the less scenic end of Steyning, the Star is a slightly careworn pub that really needs a fresh pair of eyes to smarten it up. Has potential, but it best days are currently behind it.Ample car parking to the side amongst the three clamped and dumped vehicles already in residence.A lot more capacious inside than it looks, although a bit of a mess in terms of layout. There's rather a surprising choice of food options on some scruffy menus on the bar. These are supplemented by an impressive array of blackboarded specials. Barely any punters at the trough when we visited, but a couple of oldies that we passed in the doorway were enthusing about a recently consumed ploughman's lunch. We probably needed to see some evidence before ordering too bravely, so made do with a fish finger panini. Perfectly fine on arrival, with added fresh salad and some crispy fries; reasonably priced too.The young barmaid was very sweet, but was getting quite flummoxed over something not immediately apparent. Think she was ok doing drinks but also dealing with food was clearly a challenge. My pint of Harveys here was quite ok too. Can't think that I'll ever re-visit, but if I did might be rather more adventurous on the food front next time round.

I was on a camping trip with three friends and went for an evening meal and a Sunday lunch the following day. The evening meal was okay and arrived in a timely manner. The menu was not extensive but there was a reasonable choice, and I opted for a chorizo and beef burger. It was a satisfying meal but perhaps a little over priced for what it was. The Harvey's Best Bitter was excellent, the staff were great and we all had a fun night. The following day, we ordered roasts - I wouldn't have done but the Sunday menu was somewhat diminished and the roasts were the only mains apart from the specials. Two had nut roasts while I, along with one of the others, opted for lamb.We were waiting for about 50 minutes before it arrived. We (the lamb-eaters) initially thought the meat was beef and not lamb as it lacked the distinctive lamb flavour. In fact it lacked any flavour, and the texture was unusual. It was very tender but tasteless. Upon querying the meat, we were assured it was lamb (it's lamb, Jim, but not as we know it). The rest of the meal was fine, and the potatoes and parsnips were excellent. There were no complaints about the nut roasts. We did receive apologies about the time taken to receive our orders - in fact if anything, they were a little over-apologetic. It seems it was down to there not being sufficient kitchen staff; the age-old problem.

My friend and I had roast beef, the meat was ok, tender and rare but tasteless. The vegetables were dreadful, tasteless peas, carrots, cabbage, new potatoes and peas, broccoli and cauliflower cheese was sitting water with cheese on the top, Yorkshire a frozen one, like leather, the roast potatoes and parsnips were inedible, soggy and tasted odd. Gravy tasteless. I told the person who collected our plates, who was new and didn’t really know what to say, to feed my complaint back, but we did not get any response. Quite pricey at £14 so I would expect it to be good. Would not eat there again, awful.

Nothing good to say. Awful place, dreadful service but worst of all was the food. Roast beef which was simply inedible due to being so tough, and the vegetables were dry and over cooked, with their understanding of cauliflower cheese being grated cheese on cauliflower (also over cooked)

Just wanted to state that our meal tonight was of particularly high quality. We had both chosen off the Special Board - I had selected the Rump of Lamb perfectly cooked with pink interior- presentation was of high standard with the special edition of the pomegranate sauce being presented on the side in a small jug - always a thoughtful decision so the diner can choose when to pour without disguising the flavour of the components of the dish. My partner had selected the Macaroni Cheese with Crispy bacon topping - a good sized portion with fresh sliced French stick with butter on the side - the Chips were just cooked crispy and freshly fried - a real treat on a cold Friday night with blazing wood fire to sit beside whilst dining. I would definitely recommend to locals and visitors alike as a friendly pub with great staff and now great food as well.

We are house hunting in Steyning and saw an advert for a quiz night at this pub which we thought may present an opportunity to talk to local residents. What a lovely evening, the place was packed, the landlady and co couldn't have been more welcoming and attentive. I am told the beer served is excellent, (not my tipple but the spritzers were much appreciated) the food was pretty good but in truth we were there for the atmosphere and a friendly pub. This was it in bucketloads and we didn't disgrace ourselves in the quiz either which was a lot of good-natured fun. The curry accompanying the quiz was extremely popular and looked impressive we ate from the regular menu. Spending three nights in Steyning we had a little difficulty in finding a good choice of places to eat on Sunday and Monday night in particular. On Monday night we walked through the town and came across The Star - not really expecting it to do food or, if indeed it did, not expecting it to be particularly good as it was a small rural pub and not very busy. However we were very pleasantly surprised as the food was excellent. We had steak and kidney pie and it was piping hot and very tasty. We were that impressed that we found ourselves back there for a lunch snack after our walk the following day and we had some excellent pate and cheese ploughman lunches.

We have visited this pub quite often in the last ten years but were put off by the previous owners. Very pleased to say that the current incumbents are very friendly and go out of their way to make the experience enjoyable. I agree that the menu could be more varied but the food we had was delicious. If you have been disappointed in the past, give it another go.

Dropped in with family one weekend afternoon Sat in the garden and had a few menu snacks. Well stocked bar which had a clean and friendly feel to it. Especially impressed that they had Thatchers Gold which as everyone knows is Gods favourite ciderVery helpful staff. Good generous portions of food. Basically an excellent unpretentious British pub

On our way home from Sussex to Gloucestershire and came off the main road hoping to find something nice in Steyning. We were not disappointed. Very friendly welcome at the bar and terrific service from the kitchen. My friend had a prawn sandwich on granary and I had delish pink Roast Beef and horseradish sauce also on granary. Both plates came with very freshly-cooked chips and a salad. Their is a large choice of different parts of the pub to eat in, cool and clean. Cost was about £10 each including a lager and a glass of wine. Well worth the money, and the turn down the road to Steynine village. Would definitely stop there again.

We often go here when visiting family. The pub is spacious yet cosy, the beer garden is amazing and the staff are all brilliant. Highly recommended.

Went for dinner for Sunday roast. Was awful, cauliflower was raw, roast potatoes rock hard. Tasteless food

A truly wonderful local pub with great food, lovely staff and perfect setting. Take your pick from sitting inside, out in the adult garden with sunshine and water stream, or in the kids garden with great pirate ship and slide etc...Emma the landlady is absolutely wonderful and makes you feel very welcome. The food we had was perfect and accommodated us and the kids perfectly. The ploughmans on the next table looked utterly amazing. An all round great experience with fab food, great host and lovely setting. Defiant worth a visit!!

Have had lunch here a couple of times recently. First time roast beef sandwich was excellent with some chips and a bit of salad. Next time went for a ploughmans which was a substantial size with a good chunk of cheese and some ciabatta style bread. Sandwich was around £6, the ploughmans around £8, which isn't far adrift of current pub prices, and not bad for Steyning. Staff were engaged and welcoming. The pub has a couple of garden areas, one by the stream beside the pub, the other is gated and has a pirate ship play area and chickens in a coop to keep the kids entertained

This was a great venue for family meal, the menu was able to meet everyone tastes which is always an excellent start. The food was hot, well presented and tasted delicious. We were a party 11 unbooked we just turned up, we were made to feel very welcome nothing was too much trouble. We spent a lovely couple of hours here with our family and 2 dogs who were also made very welcome. We will definitely come back again when in the area.

The Burger was amazing - on the big side but homemade - try the beef and chorizo one. Will be visiting again

Went here for lunch and we weren't disappointed. Under New Management and food was hot and well presented. Had the halloumi and beetroot burger and it was delicious. Asked to change my fries for salad which wasn't a problem. My husband had the fries and loved them!

Unfortunately we felt on this occasion the food really was not up to the usual standard - whitebait over cooked - chips not their usual crispy delicious standard - but everyone has an off day and we said it would not deter us from returning HOWEVER we found out as we were leaving that after 14 years of trading the Orchard is due to close at the end of September 😔 So sad as , as a family some who are no longer with us it was always are “go to” place for a good quality home cooked meal . So what ever the owners plans are for the future we wish them good luck 😋

Nice enough pub, with a reasonable drinks selection and friendly staff. We visited for a family lunch (on recommendation) and the place is very geared up for food. However, the food is absolutely dreadful: over cooked, bland and (in the case of the bao buns that I had) inedibly dry. Seems very popular, for reasons unknown to this visitor.

We ordered breakfast at out table and it was delivered quickly with every detail perfectly executed. The food was hot and fresh and really tasty. The drinks were also perfect. I paid what I thought was a fair price and will definitely be returning. You’ll go a long way to find better food in Horsham.

Great roast dinners. All food was brilliant and reasonably priced. Small play area for the children to be entertained. Staff really friendly and helpful.
