Unfortunately this is not like me but I'm afraid I have to give this place a very low rating, they had no draught ales at all just said arriving soon, the place absolutely stinks of dogs and the gents toilets are absolutely disgusting the smell was overpowering, the barman must be the most miserable person in the world and is quite rude, this is the second time I've been in the pub but I'm afraid it will be my last, not a pleasant experience, it's a shame as the place has so much potential

Opened the door to see a notice saying no dogs allowed. Walked in to find a huge dog in front of me. Walked back out. I've given you 5 stars as you don't deserve to have your rating affected by this. However, I feel that a pub that doesn't allow dogs should have no dogs in it.

Rude abrupt bar staff shouted across bar you can't bring a dog in here. Shame they couldn't approach you and explain, only came in as friend said always seems to have a dog in there, UNSURE HOW TO REPLY SO.. I EXPLAINED TO THE STAFF HE WAS A SUPPORT DOG BUT THEY JUST SPOKE OVER ME (LOOKING AT OTHER REVIEWS THIS SEEMS COMMON PRACTICE BY STAFF) I DID THINK MAYBE DOGS AREN'T ALLOWED DUE TO THE FACT THERE WAS A MUCH LARGER DOG LAYING ON SOFA AND NOT AS YOU SERVE FOOD BECUASE IF SO THEN YOUR OWN DOG WOULDN'T BE WHERE FOOD IS SERVED. WOW.. WALKED BY YESTERDAY AND NOTICED STAFF CUTTING TOENAILS IN THE BAR AREA...

Then there was a dog fight at the bar and after the same XL bully dogs were allowed to run free around the pub, including behind the bar. Barman rude and said that our over 14 year old children couldn’t play pool even thought the sign said no under 14’s. Definitely the worst pub I’ve been in for a while.

On the way back to my hotel in Penzance, after spending the day going to St Michael’s Mount, I had checked the internet for the best pubs in Penzance and saw several good ratings for The Star Inn, so thought I’d check it out and maybe stay for dinner. The fellow at the bar was short and curt and they only had one real ale on pump - his only description was ‘citrusy’. Finished the drink then left. With the reviews that I saw I was expecting a friendly welcome - as others here seem to have indicated more recently, that’s obviously not the way they work now.

Popped in to use the loo before ordering and my disabled wife was verbally rebuked for using the toilets as the "person" behind the bar presumed we were only in there for the toilets as if we would all come in for one person to use the facilities! The smell in the pub suggests the carpets haven't been cleaned in decades the clientele were the bottom of the barrel and the decor was non existent so to sum it up no atmosphere and no reason to return after being treated so rudely so when you see the star inn just keep on walking to anywhere else oh and for good measure dogs are not allowed support dogs or otherwise

I was banned by the barely 20 year old barman for commenting to the rest of the pool team that when we had played there they shut the bar at ten when we still had 5 games to play. So they had to stay open all that time without a drink and the whole team backed Me up that I was not at all rude. But that's why it doesn't make any money and never will plus the fact they won't do a simple good pint. You need to have a serious look at the place, unless it's just a money laundering excersise. Which if so will be looked into by My Police friends,Ty.

It had looked like you had tried to get the rooms turned around really quick telly bed no telly, painted but paint specks on the headboard. Chaise lounge no legs so if I sat on it I could not get up. Absolutely disgusted by the way the staff treated me in The Star Inn in Penzance two days ago.I had done a event for the people of Penzance to lift their Christmas spirits up and hadn't eaten all day. I came in and asked if they served food to which I was told no. I was right from the beginning met with a attitude from the first member of staff and when my friend asked if I could eat something from another place they said no. I was so hungry that I had a small apple pie and then they called in the Covid Secure Marshals.I explained my issue about being hungry and the marshals understood where I was coming from and asked me to not eat anything else and I agreed. They also asked me to buy a drink so my friend tried to but was refused because it was me that wanted the drink. Then the second guy came up to me (pictured) and said that I need to leave.I said no because I was waiting for my friend who had a pint in her hand. He then threatened to put his hands on me and that he was going to call the police. I had explained to him that I have Autism and PDA but he still continued to harass me.He didn't stop all the way through even after my friend told him he is discriminating against me. He said that the event I did outside was rubbish and when I handed my friend her receipt because I was worried about it having her details on it just in case she used her card, he said I was doing that to cause more trouble. I would never recommend this place to anyone as they treated me very poorly.Threatening me with police and putting their hands on me over a apple pie is making a big deal over nothing

Popped in out of the rain, seeing as the note in the window said this place is 'dog friendly'. Err no. We sat at a table just inside the door, no one else nearby. We had been chatting about my friend's potential move to Penzance for work while my Yorkie snoozed on my coat, and my 2 Chihuahuas - 4 kilos and 1.9 kilos - sat on our laps as we perched on our dining chairs. It was very quiet as no food is served on Sundays. Just one other group of 'regulars'? by the bar. 20 mins in, a 'bouncer-type' (nothing like cheerful welcoming door security folk the length and breadth of the country) po-faced man came up and, without preamble, no 'hello!', no nowt!, demanded that the dogs on our laps be placed on the floor, rules of the landlady apparently.I said nothing. I left. Anyone who knows me, knows I don't leave red wine. I did. Half left, at least. Well done, The Star Inn. Pubs dying on their feet and, quite frankly, you deserve to close. We were on a three week winter break and wanted to make it to Penzance mainly to take some photographs to jog my mums memory of her honeymoon in 1958. We arrived and parked up. The rain was light at the start but suddenly when we got into the main road it really came down. We were planning lunch anyway but I rushed into the star and asked if we could bring our spaniel in. Yes was the reply but not on the carpeted area. This was fine and we sat down at a table. The landlord was friendly and the place was clean and atmospheric. A nice cozy place with lots of tables. The toilet were upstairs and clean. The bar was full and lots of beer options. My husband ordered the rump steak. I ordered the lasagna. It was a little unnerving that the chef and assistant walked through the pub and looked to make sure we were eating their food twice. The steak was over cooked but the accompaniments were good. The lasagna itself was nice although it really didn't need the thick layer of cheese on top - a sprinkling would have been enough. The doughy bread roll was unpleasant and it would have been nice to have a proper chunk of crusty bread instead. All considered if we visited Penzance again we probably wouldnt go to this place but hopefully the landlord will read this and have a review of his kitchen staff - so please dont dismiss it as it is a nice pub generally.

Well my lasagne arrived in a shallow dish swimming in grease lasagne is a dish with layers of pasta and minced beef. There was no layers and virtually no mince, no salad leaves and three small pieces of bread which were dry and no butter. My husbands was not much better three very smal sausages sitting on a circle of mash but no sign of the rich thick gravy just a very watery juice. The pub was busy as it had a quiz night on and is obviously busy with locals but on looking around the tables not one of them had dishes on their tabes which is unusual after their quiz they seemed to help themselves to a buffet hopefully this was more appetising than the food we had ordered. We visited yesterday for early Sunday lunch. Plenty of choice of meat and vegetables but food, including gravy, was disappointingly not hot enough. I did point this out afterwards to the chef who said he would use a probe to check and rectify the situation. I am not sure if we were among the first to eat or whether the vegetables in the bain marie were at a cooler temperature on the top layer, however I did eat my lunch as nothing wrong with the taste, just temperature! I rather wished after that I had requested my plate be put in the microwave for couple of minutes! In case I am coming across as a very fussy customer, I would add that both my husband and mother-in-law felt the same way. Perhaps we were just unlucky!

Went in around 12:30 on Saturday 15th October with my friend after looking at the menu outside and being pleased!! Had a wonderful choice of hot food for lunch and after being in the rain, a pub lunch was much needed! However, this didn't happen as we didn't get served! Walked into the pub and two people were behind the bar (one male and one female). Didn't smile at us or acknowledge us once. Only one table in the whole place was being used so had a great choice of where to sit, once we sat the woman walked past us 3 times and the male walked past twice clearing plates from the other table. Neither of them spoke or even acknowledged us- after 10 minutes of being ignored, we put back on our wet coats and went to the The Turks Head where we had a wonderful meal and got served straight away.

This is the second time we have visited the Star on our annual holidays to Cornwall. Once again we were made to feel very welcome by the staff and enjoyed a great lunch. I had the nicest fish finger sandwich and my husband enjoyed a fabulous steak sandwich. The Star's beer was very welcome after a long coast walk and has a very cosy feel with nooks and cranny's in which to sit.

We were looking for somewhere to grab a meal on the main street in Penzance and there really isn't much that offers substantial food other than coffee shops and pastie places, then we stumbled upon the Star Inn.To be honest the landlord(?) didn't appear that welcoming at first but the menu looked OK so we gave it a go and it turned out to be very pleasant indeed. The barmaid was friendly and we all four enjoyed our mains, all at pretty reasonable prices for a 'tourist' town. While not 'haute cuisine', everything was well presented and well cooked and I was happy with the speed and service. The surroundings are traditional, a little dark and have a genuine feel and personally, I would choose this pub above everything else to offer on Market Jew Street.

I believe I did a review on this restaurant a few weeks ago, so now am back to give an update. What a difference, I ordered scampi, chips and garden peas for my partner and yet again I ordered gammon egg, chips with skins on and peas for myself. When the meals came out I heard my partner comment on the peas and that was "where are the rest of the peas" she asked...in other words she had about a desert spoon full of peas and on my meal well the egg was broken and looked greasy, and yet again where were the peas and the chips well the fairies must have taken all the skins off before cooking them..... All in all today was definitely not a good day to go and eat here. Shall we be returning.....no, can not risk having another bad meal here.

Before I came to Penzance I looked on the internet to see what I was about to experience. A lady had written a review saying that Penzance was not worth a visit. I thought this was a bit harsh. However, having spent three hours here I am inclined to agree. This lady said that St Ives was a better bet. It is a very long time since I visited St Ives and therefore I cannot comment. There did not look as though there were any inviting places to eat but we wandered in to The Star Inn. My first port of call was the ladies' loo where I realised far to late that there was no toilet paper. My friend had ordered a sandwich for me. When it arrived it was of the standard I make for myself when I am in a tearing hurry and I do not care what it looks like.Another thing I noticed was that the carpets looked grubby. This was not a happy experience but looking at other places to eat in the vicinity I felt they looked worse. English seaside towns are not very appealing these days and Penzance is no exception

The bar itself is lovely with a great atmosphere however when I ate there I found the food to be completely underwhelming especially considering the price. There was very little difference between the amount of food on the small and large plate however a £3 price difference! The meal I had was average at best and I felt like I was eating a microwave meal. However to drink there is lovely and I will continue doing that there.

on a recent visit to Cornwall we were looking for somewhere reasonably priced to eat. we usually hit Weatherspoons in Penzance, but walking up the high street we noticed the Star Inn. took a look at the menu, and decided to give it a go. we were initially a little disappointed that only carvery was available that day, but being hungry and having taken a look at what was on offer, we settled there.we chose the smaller of the carveries on offer, either £6.95 for the small, or £10.95 for a large! the small was ample. The meat and veg was beautifully cooked, and a very wide range of veg was available. the staff were friendly and welcoming.we will certainly go back the next time we're in Cornwall, well done The star Inn, your food was very yummy, thank you!

Went with a group of friends on a Saturday night and had a splendid time. A rough n ready kind of pub that often has live music playing. Friendly crowd get in there, I'd recommend a visit.

Had a big family meal was nice and spacious as there was so many of us. They had great children menus and reasonably priced. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The food for most was lovely but maybe a bit on the small side for the price. I had a salad with goats cheese which was nearly nine pounds and there really wasn't much goats cheese at all which I did mention and the staff were fabulous and said they would mention this to the chef and would get me some more and offered me a free drink on the house and said they appreciated all comments, I thought this was lovely and took me seriously. The salad looked lovely but was mainly lettuce and onion with two cherry tomatoes chopped in half. The rest of the family said it was lovely just portion sizes.

Friendly staff, plenty of seating, pool table at the back. Menu has good choice, but loathe the adding on for sides etc, just give customers a price with various options for sides included. As what starts out to be an affordable meal turns into an expensive one. Beers kept well.

Had lunch here and it was average. Much better places to eat in the town if I'm honest. The staff though need training. Been here once or twice on a night here and there is just no staff to be seen or several behind the bar but you still wait ages to get served. They are advertising 30% off drinks on a Saturday night so I think they are probably struggling to get the locals in. The atmosphere has just disappeared to how the star used to be - it was the place to be on a Saturday at one point.

Fantastic food, fantastic bar staff, very welcoming, food was excellent , we had the ribs, the chilli, cheesy chips and steak, two adults two children, even heard about the ghost from a local, we were so supprised as from the out side looked like a blokes pub, went in side and the welcome was overwhelming, warm friendly bar staff and waitress, best chilli I have had for a long time, chips was double fried and crispy, steak was perfection and the cream and brandy source was to die for. Helpings were to big to eat it all, don't miss this when your in Penzance

This is a good pub. In town for work and after eating elsewhere I called in here for a drink. I admit my heart sank as I picked up my pint to hear the quiz night was about to start (not usually my thing). But this is winter in Pennsans. Locals all (except for me, as far as I could tell) and the banter across the room was first class.Jess behind the bar knows what's needed for good customer service. The Gaffer seems a good bloke too. An Essexman by birth, Cornishman by adoption, but he left his heart in the Blackcountry (I advise readers to visit all of those three by the way!)As I didn't eat here, I am reluctant to give 5 stars, but I will call in again if or when next in Pennsans and then will eat here too!

Stopped for a quick drink here seeing the special craft lager advertised. I only wanted to try it and at £2.10 for a half I only had enough change for a small amount. It was nice and the interior of the pub was nice too but I felt the price a bit high. The free wifi was good though the staff seemed to be bickering and moaning about their managers a lot near me.
