The Star Inn in New Forest

This has got to be the worst meal we've had for a long time. 8 of us went out for my husbands birthday. We booked The Star as had been many times before and had lovely meals, great service and great atmosphere. However, last week we arrived and ordered several starters and mains. Starters, 2 out of 6 were edible. Calamari was too rubbery to even cut, let alone chew.Prawn toast was greasy and oozed with oil. Mains. Well 8 came out. Both Pad Thai's were inedible as they had a burnt taste, dry and not what we normally would expect (especially as this is usually a regular family favouite here). Crispy chilli beef was really difficult to eat as very hard. Sweet and sour chicken arrived in a bowl with huge lumps of onion and carrots with 3 small chunks of chicken in a watery sauce. Massanan curry was probably the most disappointing as this is a favourite. Again massive chunks of onion, whole potatoes, with some chicken in, again, a watery sauce. We had every intention to discuss our disappointment with staff but no one arrived at our table after a very unfriendly staff member placed the last dish down. When we decided enough was enough and wanted to leave we said that we were disappointed with the whole meal and would not be prepared to pay for the whole meal but would obviously pay for what we could eat. The land lady came out to question this, who was very curt and confrontational. She agreed to take of just 2 dishes and presented us with the revised bill which we disappointedly paid as it was a birthday meal and didn't want to cause a sceen. On our arrival home we found a meal that we hadn't even ordered had been added. Also be advised that The Star charge more for a pint of soda than a pint of beer. So our 2 childrens drinks cost more than our alcoholic drink. Staff were so miserable and not the usual bunch of friendly faces. Not entirely sure what's gone on here, but not what we've experienced in the past.

A recent visit with friends & already thinking of a revisit. We were seated in the front part of the restaurant (back section probably nicer) but very happy with table location & ambience of restaurant. Nice friendly staff. We ordered a variety of main courses & rice dishes. All were absolutely amazing. Good portion sizes. Nicely presented. Superbly tasty. Pad Thai was one of the best I’ve had. Good value too.

a few in our party had visited before and were really impressed, however sadly this trip really didn’t live up to our expectations. food is priced high, but the service we received certainly didn’t match - very inattentive, lots of missed opportunities (missing cutlery, unclean glasses). the food had lots of issues also sadly - cold pancakes with the duck, mains came out before duck and then had to be reheated leaving the rice clumpy, only one portion of noodles left on a Tuesday night, and very salty beef with mushrooms. overall was a really disappointing meal, and sadly unlike those local in our party will return.

We almost walked by, as the frontage blends into the High Street. I am so glad we stopped. Although the frontage is small, the interior is absolutely fantastic, you can feel the history the moment you walk in.There is a large log burner that dominates the front room, which would be most welcoming on a cold, winter evening, passing through a short corridor, it extends to a very deceptively, spacious restaurant area. I was greeted by Nicky, who was most welcoming and friendly, probably the best welcome I have had anywhere. Dimpled handles of Timothy Taylor Landlord, were pulled, without hesitation and with a smile. We wanted to sit out at the front, two tables are there, Nicky gladly brought the drinks out. Although on the High Street, it was quiet without any passing traffic and we totally enjoyed soaking in the ambience. A good price for the ales, and very, very rarely, they were served at the perfect temperature. All in all, a great job done, thanks to Nicky. The only disappointment?...... I didn't have enough time for another pint there ! Would I return? Absolutely, very pleased it is only 5 miles away.

Was stuck on where to eat out with friends so thought we'd give The Star a go and were pleased that we did. Excellent Thai food. Friendly service. Good value. Will go again.

We’ve visited the restaurant on countless occasions on our regular visits to Ringwood. We usually stay at the Premier Inn down the road but the owner Ian, has often mentioned their recently refurbished accommodation, so this time we thought we’d give it a go. We were delighted with it, and the scrumptious Thai meal and Ringwood Brewery beer made for a very pleasant overnight stop.

Everything you want from a Thai meal, crisp vegetables, freshness, interesting flavour and very quick service. Lovely!

We have just returned from a week away in the New Forest and found this great pub during our stay. We found everyone at the Star Inn to be very friendly towards us and our Cockapoo Frank. The food was fabulous as well which resulted in us booking to go back the following two nights before our trip home. I would highly recommend this pub to anyone.

Stayed over on business and the price looked reasonable. It was reasonable for a reason! The smell of bleach/ cleaning fluid is good, but it was overpowering and always makes me suspicious why so much was needed in the first place. Bed was comfy, but if you want to continue sleeping beyond about 4am then ask for a room that isn't Spitfire. It sounds great as it's ground floor with shower (alternative was upstairs with bath), but 4 service vehicles had been by to do their business either for the pub or the Indian restaurant opposite the the road (one car wide) within inches of the window before 06:30. The highlight of the stay was the friendly lady at the bar.

How can you charge £6-80 for a pint of Larger, no wonder pubs are closing people don’t want to pay that much for a pint!!

Popped in whilst on a wander on the off chance as it looked nicely busy and seemed to be a 'proper' pub. I found it a lively welcoming place with a good vibe. I love a bit of Thai so was pleased to see the extensive Menu. Decided to opt for the fearsome King Prawn Khee Maow - which was listed alongside a whole array of chilli symbols so I knew I was in for a challenge. It was fabulous - full of Thai flavour - and yes red hot!! In fact it delivered exactly as promised. Would definitely come again...and yes despite battling the heat I would probably order the exact same dish again!!

Excellent food and service could not fault it thank you all at the Star for a lovely evening looking forward to our next visit

Fantastic food, as good as it was before the world went mad!!! Enjoyed it so much we are booked for the next two weeks with friends.

I would thing the roadworks and traffic situation has decimated the trade in Ringwood. Having enjoyed many good meals at the Star we decided another visit was in order. Only two other diners there we were served promptly. My wife had King Prawn Pad Thai and myself a rip-roaring, hot King Prawn Kee Mow. Both were excellent meals and the Kee Mow made me perspire and nearly as good as the Spicy Malaysian Noodles ! We had a long detour to leave Ringwood, but it was well worth the trip.

I’ve eaten at The Star for a number of years. It used to be really good, but over the past few months hasn’t been quite as good as before. Today I would say it is was just okay. There are much nicer places to eat. A shame really.

Having visited this pub and enjoyed many good lunches over the years we felt a visit was in order. We were greeted by cheerful, helpful staff to what was an empty front area of the pub. Immediately we noticed that a few meals had been crossed off the menu, particularly "Spicy Malaysian noodles" a unique, great favorite of ours at the Star. We were told there had been a change of chef. A great shame, so I chose King Prawn Kee Maow, another "hot" dish. My wife chose King Prawn Pad Thai.. Service was swift and within several minutes, two excellent meals were served. Hot, fresh and with a great depth of flavour, Excellent food ! Although the void left by the spicy Malaysian noodles in the crispy basked had not been filled, this was an excellent fish. A very enjoyable meal, but surprised we were the only diners in the front of the pub.

Well worth a visit. Going back for seconds. We all really enjoyed our meals. Sea bass was outstanding. So lucky to have a nice restaurabt ike this in Ringwood. Will be returning.

Excellent in every aspect - food, service, hospitality. You need a healthy appetite to consume more than one course, starters were large and delicious. Will definitely revisit next time we are in the area. Highly recommended.

From the beer to the Thia food to the bed and breakfast this is a must visit while in Ringwood. They say Brits cannot do hospitality well they must have never stayed at The Star. You cannot fault either the landlord or his team.

This is an old pub serving Thai / Asian food. The bar rooms are a bit dingy and need brightening up. The food is very good.

The food was ok but the pub bar where we were sitting was a bit dark and could Do with a bit of a clean up. Otherwise it was ok for a lunch.

La comida era estupenda, como de costumbre. Tuve fideos picantes de Malasia/crujiente nos hemos sumergido. Mi esposa tenía el compartir; s aperitivos fuente hor para dos. Me sentí un poco estafado cuando se paga como el menú era engañosa. Sentí que debería haber dicho por persona al lado el precio. (ver foto) así que pasamos 7 libras. 50 Más de lo que esperaba. Es una pena, ya que siempre hemos disfrutado de este lugar.

There is a good atmosphere.An excellent range of beers and wines. The food is good and the service obliging and cheerful. Well worth calling in.

Así que volvimos para el almuerzo, ¡Menuda decepción! Las ofertas no tan interesante, elegí el surf y plato de Turf desde el menú del almuerzo. Por desgracia una de las comidas más pobres que he comido, incapaz de distinguir entre la carne y carne de cerdo como era difícil y comestible, los langostinos estaban muy bien! Nos dieron un reembolso por una comida pero habría preferido mucho más tener un sabroso almuerzo tailandés.

Hicimos un paseo con amigos y fuimos aquí para el almuerzo. Había tradicionales pub grub (comida disponible, pero me sorprendió encontrar comida china. porciones generosas y sin duda las estrellas particulares eran el pato Pekín y el Penang curry.Esto era regados con Ringwood mejores para la sidra de hombres y Aspall para las mujeres.Lo que una excelente manera de terminar el paseo.

Visité este pub con un grupo de amigos (éramos 6 total). Había estado allí antes, con otro amigo, pero que tenía bebidas ese día. Sin embargo, había estado muy impresionados y había sugerido la estrella a mis amigos para nuestro viaje. Esta vez tuve algo de comer y la comida era excelente. Los se especializa en comida asiática de estrellas - tailandés, Malasia, Singapur y zonas comunes - y es magnífico. Tuve fideos condimentados malasios, que tenía una buena patada a ellos, y con una buena variedad de cuchillo y tenedor y palillos para comer con ellos (he usado los palillos y acabó con el cuchillo y tenedor cuando los fideos dieron demasiado pequeña para recoger más). El servicio es excelente, el personal es amable y los precios son muy razonables. Para los 6 de nosotros cuesta £66 - que nos divide equitativamente entre nosotros. Sin duda lo recomendaría a mis amigos.

Friendly staff and excellent food! Nikki and Ian are excellent landlords making everyone (and their dogs) very welcome. The choice and quality of the wines are amazing and the food a delight. We will be back... Probably next weekend!

Tuvimos una comida tailandesa en el pequeño pub el viernes pasado

Had a break in the south of England, left late, due to car not starting. Phoned in advance before the kitchen closed and on arrival two oriental noodle dishes were presented to us freshly cooked. Both dishes were authentic and the ambience is convennial. For those who like real ale, there is always a choice to be had. Well worth the visit for those in the New Forrest or fro those travlling to Bournemouth or the South Coast. Very friendly staff

3 visits in the last 3 months to this warming, congenial and atmospheric pub says it all! Landlord Ian and wife Nikki run an excellent establishment with smiling staff. The menu has an oriental flavour - and no wonder with 2 Thai chefs that have been there some years. Last week I met 2 friends who hadn't eaten there before and they were favourably impressed. I can never get past the Singapore Noodles which are simply delicious. An excellent portion and beautifully spiced with all the proper ingredients. My colleague had the dish of the day - sweet and sour pork (how ordinary and boring) BUT he rated it as one of the best - tender pork pieces and a sauce (according to him) made really properly and not just a sticky mess! The sandwiches on the table next to us looked really appetizing and I will have to go back soon (before I go back to Cape Town) and try oneThe menu is a very good selection and pub food at it's best with different specials daily.

Oriental based menu. Speedy service and tasty food. Mixed Hors D'oeuvres to share and the stir fried beef were excellent. Busy though so need to book.

Stopped in Ringwood on a wet lunchtime and asked a local. Immediately welcomed and barman brought over a Timothy Taylor. They also had Summer Lightning and good wines. Enthusiastic and pleasing staff, good, clean and tasteful interior and very good Asian food. The aromas call you from a distance. They have 8 good rooms. This team is most competent and offered exactly what was needed on a miserable day.

Went for their wed buffet night and yet again top trumps, can't beat it beat in town , would and do recommend to any one Staff always cheery and chatty, beer and selection of wines good.

Found this place by chance. It's a small town centre pub. On the door is a polite notice asking guests to be in smart casual dress or better. It's cosy and if it was full could feel cramped. The bar lady was polite and efficient. The lunchtime menu is limited in number of dishes but has snacks, English meals and a range of oriental. I had a Malaysian beef noodle dish which was delicious. That, scampi and chips, a fruit juice and a pot of tea was £19.05.

Great chinese style pub grub served in this pub. Tasty and fresh. Go at lunchtimes it's half the price roughly. Ok at lunch time the menu is not as extensive ad the evening but great value. Enjoy with a pint

This is unusual by consisting of two rooms with a connecting corridor. Originally there was a coal fire, but recent conversions have turned this into an empty fireplace. The old bar has been removed and replaced with a more practical design. Having said that it still has atmosphere and a good pint. Unfortunately on our visit the place was full of customers with dogs who seemed to think they had the right of way. Spoiled our visit and it will probably be some time before I return

From appearances it's a typical English pub. The menu however is home cooked Asian food that really impressed me. I had the Kung-Po Chicken and my wife had Thai green curry. Both hearty sized portions, good value and tasty.Staff were efficient and the pub had a friendly local atmosphere. Well worth a visit.

We visit this pub usually once a week for lunch so I feel that we can provide a review based on the many number of times we have visited. We love this place to eat Asian food, it is excellent value for lunch and they also do buffet evenings. The food is cooked freshly and tastes very authentic. There is always a warm atmosphere and a great welcome. As well as Asian they do traditional pub fayre however the main attraction is the Asian Food and on occasion I have asked them to cook for me a particular dish and they have always accommodated me.I am an extremely fussy eater and have been known to send food back on more than one occasion but I can safely say I have always had a great meal here.

Was looking forward to eating here after booking in, overnight, for a one night stop. It is not often you get an Asian menu in a British pub (in my experience). The dish I had was plentiful and with nice flavour. Remember that this is a pub environment not a restaurant though, and you wont be disappointed. I'll visit again, next time I'm in Ringwood

I enjoyed a lovely meal at the Star Inn, it was a nice change to go to a English pub and enjoy tasty Asian food. you can't beat a good pint of Ringwood Best Bitter to go with a Red Thai curry!!

We like to call in for the good mainly asian based food, but also for the good range of beer this well run friendly inn has to offer

Wonderful food in here, lunch is a bargain at £6 for a full meal, then the seafood specials in teh evening are amazing.Good real ales, nice selection of wines and perfect olde worldy pub atmosphere.

Lunch times offers excellent value and the chinese food is as good as any restaurant

This a great friendly cosy pub. Service is good, landlord friendly & chatty. The food may not be traditional Thai, but I've never had a bad meal there. No long waits for food & it always seems to be fresh, which makes a pleasent change. The no kids thing is clearly on the door as you walk in & to be honest it's a relief to go somewhere where there are none. Not anti kids, but sometimes it's nice to be in an adults only setting.I've stayed in the rooms as well & these are pleasent & clean. Breakfast is good too!

Maybe the last reviewer should take note and think that a pub is an adult environent and that adults don't want kids in pubs why not take them to mcdonalds or somewhere? The star is a great pub that does great food and is soo as it's not ruind by kids, it's a proper pub!

We were tempted to this pub by the reviews of the oriental food and the tantalising menu - however once at the bar with our 7 year old, a barmaid prompted told us that children are not allowed behind the bar, but could go in the garden. We were fine with this.We asked about food and were told that was okay, but they don't serve children. The barmaid swiftly left to get the bookings list and continued to take our reservation - whilst we stood there flabberghasted, she continued saying so this is a booking for two - er, no, quite clearly our child needed to eat too. Again we were told that they will not serve food to children, not even in the garden either.I've never had this kind of reception from a pub when we have attended with a child, and I would not be tempted to either visit this establishment again or recommend it to friends.:(

We found this Pub the best in Ringwood, we only stayed a week but visited on many occasions and consistently received a very friendly welcome. We sampled the Thai menu and found the food excellent, authentic and very good value for money.

the food isnt thai!!! had red curry with frozen sweetcorn, frozen peas and sliced carrots!!!! need i say more. will stick to drinks at the bar. as yet to sample english menu as never on.
