We arrived at the star and were immediately greeted by a lovely member of staff. The fire was lit and that made it so lovely and cosy. We were shown to our tables quickly, welcomed and menus given. The food and service was excellent. Lovely home cooked food. Good generous portion size. Nice children’s menu with a refined adult section which was lovely for a treat. Definitely recommended. Thank you for your wonderful hospitality. Great recommendation for lagers as well!

We were in last week for a family meal, during a trip to Alton Towers. The young waiter who seated us went out his way to make sure we were sorted and comfortable, due to my son having a wheel chair. The food I can only say was amazing, probably the best steak pie I’ve had. The deserts were also pretty amazing. Looking forward to our next visit when back in the area.

What a great pub/restaurant. I went there last night with my brother and Rosie the sausage dog for a meal. Firstly, great meal, lovely place and made to feel most welcome. My dog got so much fuss from the lovely ladies there that it quite turned her head. She want to go there every evening now 😊 I’m not local to the area, we came up to plan a birthday celebration for my mum. We will certainly make The Star part of that celebration, absolutely lovely place, can’t recommend highly enough!!

It's a normal looking pub, in a lovely location. But once inside you are in an immaculate pub. It has been done up to a ridiculously good standard. It is a mix of traditional and modern, done to an amazing standard. We guessed that it would be good we got there before 12noon and there were 2 other groups queuing up to get in. Oh nostalgia! The staff were attentive and obviously extremely proud of the place. We had a couple of pints at lunchtime and booked in for an evening meal. In the evening we arrived with Rosie, my brothers dachshund, what a star she was. The staff all love dogs and made a fuss of her. There is a large area of the restaurant that is dog free. The meals were good value pub grub. However they were cooked to the highest standards and the service was most attentive The food, I had a chicken, bacon and leek pie, was lovely, beautifully cooked, professionally presented and served. This is a place we will definitely be returning to and one I can recommend most heartily to anyone. An amazing find.

We have been to the Star many times and always previously enjoyed it, This time however it was a really disappointing experience. It started when we had to wait over 30 minutes to even be seated at our table, Then there was a further hours wait before we finally got any food. If you book a table for 7:45 you don't expect to be eating after 9:15. I had the smash burger which to be fair was very nice, My wife had the Char Siu pork, which came without any sauce and was bland and tasteless. By this time we were so hungry we just accepted it as we couldn't wait any longer. I did raise my complain with the very pleasant waitress who was apologetic explaining that they had taken on far more covers than they could possibly manage. If you take a successful restaurant and try to massively overbook then you can expect reviews like this, and to lose regular customers

Delicious Sunday lunch, a bit more than I’d normally pay but there was lots of it and like I say was delicious. Took my parents for a treat and my mum is a coeliac and having seen on Facebook that their chef is also coeliac I thought it would be a good choice. She did get a lovely Sunday lunch but was disappointed that she couldn’t have the cauliflower cheese, Yorkshire pudding or sausage and no alternative was offered (or discount) and in my opinion these 3 items are quite simple to do gluten free. Also not impressed that a service charge is added to the bill, I’m all for leaving a tip but it should be a choice not mandatory.

Loved it so much here that we were back 2 nights later. The service is fantastic- we were with our autistic daughter and they were incredibly accommodating both times, seating us in the best place for her and finding food she’d eat, including sweets from behind the bar. The food is delicious, especially the pies!! We will definitely be back when we’re next in the area.

Something didn’t feel right right from the moment we entered this place, it was the least welcoming place I’ve been to in a long time right from the drinks order which was wrong when it arrived! My steak arrived with a peppercorn sauce which tasted awful and ruined my whole meal. After eating only a few mouth fulls, I was told by the waiter that they would take 50% of my Meal off, which was an insult considering I’d spent £32 on a steak and barely eaten any of it, one of the other younger waitresses had already said the chef said there was something wrong with the source and it didn’t taste right. I demanded that I wouldn’t be paying for my steak, which was not nice at all but I was happy to pay for everything else, in the end a random person from the bar arrived with the bill with the steak taken off, no apology or anything about the problem we’ve had. We paid the bill with no arguments and left the restaurant, my wife advised the staff on the way out that She was happy with their service apart from the waiter who never returned to apologise about the situation. The manager then followed us out of the restaurant shouting at us being extremely rude. I booked this place after several nights searching lots of Internet reviews for my twin girls 11th birthday. No consideration was given to this by the staff and in the end they were extremely threatening to us upon leaving the premises to the point where I actually thought the manager was going to slap me. I have never witnessed anything like this in my whole life and I would urge anybody who is looking for a nice pub near Alton Towers resort not to go and eat at this as you will be making a big mistake! What an absolute letdown on my daughter’s birthday’s, but I can honestly say they’ve learnt a valuable lesson and understanding when to speak up when something is not right. Once again so disappointed star at Cotton, could be an absolute gem but so far from it with this management.

What a lovely find. The staff here were really lovely, friendly and super welcoming. The food was amazing. I try not to look at others food when I'm in a restaurant but the table over from us had me wishing id got what they had, the Chinese sharing board. However my food was delicious, the buttermilk honey chicken and my husband had fish and chips. Also lovely (I had to have a taste) very generous portions and you can tell they use the best ingredients. I also had the berry cocktail which was great. Highly recommend visiting. We visited here last night for a long overdue date night after hearing lots of good things about it and hearing many friends saying that they had been we knew we wanted to try it too. It was a half an hour drive from our house so one of us definitely was going to drive as we were going to watch a band after so our plan was to eat, go home and get a taxi to the venue close to home. On arrival the car park was very small with limited spaces but we got a space so no issue there. Upon looking at the pub it looked like an average country pub however on entering what a gorgeous little gem. With pretty decor, backdrops it was really aesthically pleasing. It was busy which I see as an advantage because people must really enjoy it. We were 15 mins early, our table wasn't ready so they sat us near to the bar and we're given menus to choose what we wanted, after a short wait we'd ordered drinks and then shortly after the drinks arrived our table was ready, we sat down roughly around 7:35. We were asked what we would like to eat, everything we chose was not available. Which is fine but it would have been good to be told when we were given the menu because in the 20 mins we were in the bar we could have chosen something else. We settled on the XL bhaji, bacon and cheese croquettes and the steaks for mains. Unfortunately for us our order ticket got lost and our starters arrived a lot later than we envisaged we were so hungry as hadn't eaten since 12 as we were saving ourselves for tea at the pub. The waitress was apologetic and advised what had happened around 8:20pm but at that point it still had to be cooked and served to us. We had said to each other that if it wasn't with us by 8:45 we would pay for the drinks and leave and call McDonald's on the way home but saved by the bell at 8:40 they arrived. The meals were small, I was expecting something bigger in size for the XL bhaji, they should drop the XL as I have bigger at my local curry house but it was tasty, I think after the long wait I was expecting a humongous bhaji haha but it was average. Obviously we demolished the starters within minutes and then the mains arrived 9:10pm albeit delicious the wait did ruin the night for me as it was the talking point & when you book for half 7 you don't expect to have to wait until around 9 for your food. They offered us a drink on the house which was kind but as I was drinking pepsi, I think a discount would have been better. We paid £99.90 and for under £100 for a meal out it wasn't on par with meals I've had elsewhere for less money. The portions were average for the cost. When we received the bill we noticed that they had not charged us for 2 lagers and 1 pepsi which again was kind but if we had not had the huge wait we would have both only had 2 drinks each. We didn't make it to watch the band after the meal as we didn't get home until 10 and the band started their set at 8 so we'd have missed them by the time we got there. We did enjoy the night out together even though there was complications. We sat opposite the door which when punters kept coming in and out it was cold, opposite the door was the till and every time the door was open I could see the tickets blowing on the floor so it's no wonder our ticket got lost, I made a joke to my husband that with the door keep opening I bet our ticket's had gone behind the cupboard, I actually think that could have happened. All in all nice meals, a little pricey, nice staff but the wait and lack of communication regarding meals unavailable I have marked as average. I hope that the management can learn from this.

Personally felt the food was overpriced for the quality and quantity you get. Ordered the wild mushroom & pesto tagliatelle. Portion was small and just average quality. Certainly not worth £13! Service was very slow. My friend had to ask for the dessert menu after waiting for ages after our main course. We ordered desserts. I had the white chocolate & passion fruit cheesecake. Certainly wasn’t home cooked. More like something bought from Iceland and was pretty tasteless. Friend ordered chocolate fondant. Not a drop of fondant in the centre. It was just an over cooked chocolate sponge which was rock hard & she couldn’t eat it! They did knock this off the bill. Overall I wouldn’t return there. Far nicer places nearby serving better quality food for the price.l

It was piping hot (you don't get this everywhere) and delicious. We had fish and chips and rarebit pork. Wow. I'm not a pork fan but it was gorgeous with perfect fondant potatoes. The fish and chips were delicious, the batter was crisp and lovely and my son ate every bit of his local sausages and chips. We will definitly call again and tell others to try. We arrived at 5pm and were shown to our table. Polite enough reception. On booking we knew we had 1 hour 45 before being to vacate the table and thought that plenty of time to enjoy our meal. For context, it was quiet: there was only one other table in use in the restaurant (2 people), then us (3). In the bar there were maybe 2 or 3 other tables in use, so far below 25% of capacity. Drinks offered immediately but we decided to wait until ordering, which we did shortly after. Food took maybe 40mins to come out but was very good. Checked on to ensure all was okay. From then on we just felt ignored. No dessert menus offered or if further drinks were required, no closing of the table. At 6.15pm, I went to the bar and said we were feeling a little ignored and would like to see the dessert menu please. A few minutes later they were provided and the server walked off. 15 minutes later I went back to the bar asking to speak to the manager: nobody had come back to take our order (after I'd clearly articulated the service hasn't been great). I acknowledged COVID made things difficult, especially in hospitality, but we were disappointed. The manager seemed mildly disinterested and focused on her problems: short staffed, one member of staff very new and she'd had to be in the kitchen. No real meaningful acknowledgment or apology for our thoughts on the experience and certainly no goodwill gestures or reduction in bill. We only had one course and a drink each, just managing to leave by 6.45, with one starter off the menu and 2 desserts not available, so £50 spent on a meal we went out really looking forward to but came back feeling incredibly flat. We've been out for so many meals during these difficult times and all restaurants, while sometimes slower, all seemed overjoyed to welcome customers back in, making the occasion seem even more special and we've loved the opportunities of being back and eating out. This was a far cry from The Star as Cotton. This restaurant was suggested by our accommodation hosts as they'd heard it was 'meant to be good'. She may no longer give it quite the same courtesy and we certainly will not be returning, should we be back in the area: there are far better places out there happy to make you feel that eating out is an enjoyable experience, not just perfunctory.

One had a beef dinner and meat was inedible, all gristle, should never have left the kitchen. Yorkshire pudding seemed to have been deep fried, very oily taste. Burger meal (£15!) so ordinary and uninspiring, brioche bun and patties dry, bit of melted cheese did little to raise the standard. Fries undercooked, should have been crisp. No pickles, salad garnish or sauces, nothing to give it visual appeal or justify the high price. Been once before and had superb Sunday lunch so this was a real let down.

We had the takeaway Valentine’s meal for two which included a lamb and beef burger, buttermilk chicken, Cajun fries, sweet potato fries and cookie dough. This isn’t our first takeaway from The Star, and usually the food is delicious and well worth the money, however on this occasion we couldn’t help but feel a little underwhelmed.I don’t know if they were just really busy, as I know project doughnuts had done a pop up shop here earlier on in the day, but the food seemed rather rushed. The Cajun fries had no Cajun seasoning, there was no sauce pots as shown in the promo photos, and the mint yoghurt was put on the beef burger instead of the lamb burger by mistake. The burgers were nice but all in all the food was just a bit “meh”... in all honesty we were left feeling a little bit disappointed and felt we could have had a much nicer meal elsewhere. I’m hoping this was just a one off, as ordinarily the food is very very nice, and the themed nights make a nice change from the usual weekend takeaway choices. A little extra care and attention when doing the final food preparations would have made all the difference.

Thankfully for us they have branched out into take away and deliverable meals. We have had several of there awesome Sunday lunches and I can’t recommend them enough. Had to save the pudding for another day, just too full! Not tried one of there themed night menus yet but check them out they look lush.

Just had four takeaway Sunday roasts from the Star at Coton as a weekend treat, we had two lamb suet puddings, one turkey and one beef. The portions were generous and the food was tasty and good quality. One minor criticism was none of the dishes had stuffing on them and all four should have, maybe they ran out? I look forward to visiting the pub for a meal when it reopens.

Disappointing. Visited during the governments half price meals offer. I had been told by a friend that they did nice steaks so was looking forward to it. When we got there we were told they had taken the steaks off the menu. The meals we had were rubbish, my chips were so hard I was worried for my teeth, my wife’s fried fish was very much over fried also. We won’t be eating here again.

My husband and I ate here recently after a morning out at Alton Towers. We hadn't planned on eating out but stopped on the off chance and we were found a table no problem. The staff were incredibly attentive and helpful. We opted for the set menu which was £16 for 2 courses. We chose starter and main and I can honestly say I have never left as much food as I did here. When the fish came I couldn't believe the size of it. It was tasty too. I was gutted to not finish it.Would definitely visit again

We visited the Star whilst on holiday. After waiting for an hour for our food to arrive we were dismayed to find that all our meals were cold and the overall quality very poor. Flat yorkshire puddings, fat and flabby roast beef, lumpy mashed potato etc., no cutlery or condiments on the table. Needless to say, we complained, only to be told by the manager that she had done us a favour by giving us a table without a booking! She (grudgingly) gave us a 20% discount. There was no apology for the poor food or bad service. Dissatisfied customer? You bet.

We had the Seafood sharing Platter to start and I then had a lovely Thai Red prawn curry and my Husband had The Big Greek, I couldn't resist the Pecan and Bourbon pie for dessert. There was a great selection of drinks, with a great variety of Gins including a lovely Chai gin from a local distillery. I will definitely be back for another visit.

We visited the Star on a damp October evening and walked into an oasis of warmth. Friendly welcome, roaring log burners and a cosy ambience was a great start. The service was helpful. We went for dinner and were pleased with the selection on the menu -all the usual suspects and something for everyone. Good vegan/veggie section. We had fish and chips (crispy batter, appropriately sized portion of good chips) and the aubergine &chickpea tagine (flavourful, could have eaten more couscous but I was v hungry). Desserts tasty. Even better, the bar is dog friendly so ours could get fed chips as she lay under the bench. Would recommend and if you’re staying at the CCC campsite 200m away, it’s a must! Book in advance to be on the safe side

Been wanting to come here for a long time. Ordered two beef sirloin Sunday dinners, both came out cold with not everything it stated on the menu e.g cauliflower cheese, we complained that it was cold and they sent out another. The replacement came and half the dinner was cold with others heated up, the beef was cold. Really disappointed, we barely even ate half the dinner and we told the waitress how we were disappointed and that the food was tasteless and she said “that’s unusual”. We had no money knocked off the bill, if I’m honest it wasn’t worth paying anything at all considering the amount of food we left. We would’ve ordered dessert after but think we’ll call elsewhere for our tea now we’re left disappointed and hungry!

I rarely write reviews, but had to make an exception following a brilliant visit to the Star this week. The basic stuff - clean, organised, clearly lots of effort taken to ensure COVID guidelines - all faultless. The staff were all excellent, friendly, organised, welcoming and thorough, and the venue itself is a lovely building. But the main reason for the review is the quality of the food. Simply outstanding, the best I’ve had in a pub for years. We are a family of 5, and each meal was excellent, very generous portions, and clearly cooked fresh to order. There is proper care and attention that has gone into the food - it’s not overly complicated, but it is done to a very high standard indeed. Stunning cut of meat for the rump steak, but the sign of the quality runs through every detail... really well seasoned mushrooms, such a small touch but adds so much to the overall quality of the plate. The freshness and authenticity of the feta with the Greek salad/lamb was another sign of the care and attention being put in to serve really high quality pub food.Really can’t fault it or recommend this pub enough. Very much looking forward to coming back!!Josh

I booked a table for 8 to celebrate my mum's 60th birthday on Saturday night at 7:30pm with the family. I called ahead and booked the table 3 weeks prior. On arrival there were no staff to greet us and had to attract the attention of the waiting staff to notify them of our booking, the table wasn't ready and after ordering drinks at the bar we were asked to sit outside and wait (not an issue as the weather was quite mild). 30 minutes later we were seated at the table. As we were seated at the table we were handed 2 menus between 8 of us and were left to browse the options. 30 minutes later we had to gain the attention of the waiting staff to take our order, to then be told that they had sold out of 2/3 of the menu, which they failed to tell us when handed the menus initially. We asked for an extra 2 minutes to reconsider the limited menu. While we were waiting, we overheard a couple near us ask to be moved to a different table as their chairs were touching the adjacent parties chairs, clearly breaching covid-19 safety measures. In addition to this, the hand sanitiser dispenser was broken on arrival and there was no soap and toilet roll in either the men's or women's bathrooms. We ordered food which finally arrived at our table at 9:30pm! (2 hours after our reservation). By this time my mum was not very hungry at all and started to feel unwell, not being used to eating so late.We were offered water for the table which never arrived. We had to stand and order drinks at the bar during the entire service. My sister ordered a Thai curry which was cold and needed to be replaced (this is the 1st time she has ever sent back food to the kitchen). My partner and I requested to speak to the manager to simply offer feedback and she was very understanding and apologetic and offered to personally deliver the bill to the table and knock 20% off the bill. 20 minutes later....Still no bill and we had to attract the attention of the waiting staff again for the bill. Finally, another member of staff from the kitchen presented us with the bill and told us he would knock 10% off the bill! By this stage we were furious!! We asked them to reconsider the discount and explained the endless list of errors which had occurred during our evening. The entire evening was a disaster and the service and organisation was outrageous!! We were extremely disappointed and this was such a shame considering the big occasion, the lovely setting and what looked like a exciting menu.To rub salt into the wounds...on leaving the restaurant we saw waiting staff delivering food to another table, carrying dishes we were told were sold out!!! Literally could not write this!

Attention paid to present covid status in terms of cleanliness and cleaning practices. Same wipes we use in hospital. The staff were warm and friendly. The food was amazing and the portions huge! We had the halloumi fries and gruyere croquettes, followed by the steak and the chicken and chorizo skewers. When the mains were served, it became obvious that we should have avoided the starters as there was no way either of us would eat all of our main meals. The steak knife provided, was never needed, as the steak was so tender, that it could have been cut with a spoon. We left more than satisfied, as did our dog.

Gota give a single star review we usually go to Lenny's and we all know what u're in for there basically a crematory in a lay'by. But unexpectedly this was the polar opposite I think this breakfast was a boil in the bag. Tbf it was good but the hash browns were so bad I nearly took them Lenny's to get them cremated Im not sure if it was because it's Halloween and they gave us a trick instead of a treat but u do not boil hashbrowns under any circumstances! And if u did fry them u need some some new oil as the viscosity must be at - levels
