The Star in East Hertfordshire

Good evening! I’ve been a returning customer of the star for over four years now. I was always impressed by the service and food, hence why I’ve always returned. Last night, I had an unfortunate experience that means I won’t be returning. An employee (with long hair, baggy shorts, nose piercings) was extremely rude towards my friends and I. She first came out with our food and slammed it down on the table. Then she brought my friends food out which had a bug on it. My friend asked for a new dish as obviously it had a fly on it. The girl said “Well, (10 second pause) I’ll see what my manager says” and then continued to huff and sigh very loudly as she walked off. Personally, I’ve never been spoken to like that and I was not impressed by how rude she was. Rolling her eyes at us and just being for all I can describe ‘not a very nice person’

Our first ever visit to Bishops Stortford and we couldn't have found a better place to have lunch. Fabulous pizza washed down with some excellent real ales. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff and a great little pub all round.

Came back to the Star after my first experience was very good. And again this time didn’t disappoint. Both the food and service were great! And once again Darcey pulled it out the bag with her excellent service. Will definitely keep coming back to this pub as both times I’ve come have been tremendous!

Had a great experience in The Star, we had the bottomless brunch, would definitely recommend. Darcey took great care of us and ensured we were never left with empty drinks, fabulous cocktails 🍹. Lovely young lady, fantastic service and great food too.

Could not recommend enough. We came for bottomless brunch on a Saturday and were treated amazingly. The food by Aiden was brilliant and we had 4 very happy guests. Darcy and Elliott never left us needing drinks and checked on us constantly. They are an asset to this pub. Such fabulous value for money, would come here over London brunches for sure!

A fantastic and welcoming pub, highly recommend to anyone after a drink and a delicious meal! Do a excellent job of getting rid of brigands and riff raff so you know you can be free to have a perfect and stress free evening.

This blinking pub is my nemesis its the best-looking pub in Stratford, all beams, best beers in Stortford, normally has 2 - 3 proper ales, best staff in Stortford, always friendly and always good but it's so blinking cold. You sit there freezing your almonds off every time. No real fires, no heating of any description. The pub is a big U you enter in the middle where the bar is and the pub goes off both sides trouble is the kitchen is on one side and most of the tables are on the other and rather than walk around everyone goes across the top of the U so open door outside, open door inside, so it's all so blinking cold. We would spend a fortune in the place if it was only warm, as it is we still have a beer there every week in the hopes they might have put a radiator on or shut a door and every week we just shiver away thinking how can this be so :-) could never eat there you would pass away with hyperthermia before finishing for sure. :-) I dream of the day I can finally eat the pizza cone!

The most amazing value for money. Lovely food. Amazing service. Darcey was amazing. Will be back soon. Fabulous 👌

Was looking for a pub that was showing the football. After trying 4 pubs I came across The Star. From the outside it was uninviting bit they were showing the football. Stepping inside it was a different story. Quality ales and lagers, and after looking at the menu, a good range of food for vegetarians and carnivores. Pleasantly surprised + the staff were very welcoming.

The best pub to go to in bishops stortford. Great Tuesday quiz night that happens every week. Very nice beers

Popped in for a meal with the kids. We are travelling abroad on holiday so staying near the airport and wanted some nice food. Service was excellent as was the food, a lovely old school pub and I would totally recommend.

i came into this pub when i was passing with some friends, we sat on table 6 and we where served by niamh, she served us at the bar and then served our food. not only was she very funny but she gave us excelent service the whole experience was great and i will be coming back soon !! she deserves a pay rise !!!! hahahahaha

Came in with some friends towards the end of December, and the bar was really busy, we got chatting to Darcey who was extremely friendly and welcoming, she recommended us the best drinks to have and gave an overall lovely service. Will be sure to go back within the new year!

Came in on a rather hectic night last Saturday with my friends and was served by the pink haired girl with tattoos??? She was patient and polite despite it being quite overwhelming. Definitely be back x

We have just had our staff Christmas party at the star. Niamh helped us organise and host. And this was one of our best Christmas partys by far. The experience was great and we where really made to feel welcome and attended too. Although the pub was very busy our party was served very well.I will definitely be booking again for next year !!Also the decorations in this pub are absolutely amazing and it really makes the Christmas experience special.

I visited the pub today on my trip to Bishop Stortford I haven’t visited this town in a very long time but I visited this beautiful building and was told all about the history by the bar staff Niamh. For a young woman she knows a lot about the history of the town and the pub. The food was fantastic and very well priced thanks for a great experience

Great pub, love that Elliot bloke he’s well endowed and has a great dry sense of humour. Can’t forget that wicked sick Mohawk as well… give that man a pay rise cos his condom bill must be huge! From vic

Booked as a group of 15 of us to celebrate the end of our training course. The service from the staff was awful, and especially from the manager who didn’t even apologise for a mistake made by the kitchen instead belittled us as though we were a group of children and didn’t apologise for her staff previously being rude to us and accusing us of lying. It took almost 40 minutes for 4 cocktails to come out yet there was 3 members of staff stood behind the bar, once we asked where the drinks were again we was accused of not putting them through even though the food had come to the table which was ordered at the same time. All in all to accept a group booking of 15 people and to then accuse them of lying and speak to them in such a rude manor I think is appalling by the manager herself, especially when there wasn’t one single apology given to us on the night other than one gentleman behind the bar.I think the manager and her staff needs to have a revisit on what “hospitality” means as they clearly had no clue from the way we was treated

What an amazing fish and chips. Crispy batter and not wet and soaked in oil. Fish fresh and flakey with a decent portion. Met the lovely chef with pink hair and seemed under pressure. Another venue basically shut the kitchen, and everyone was in the star, and I wouldn’t have even considered it a long wait on food. Definitely recommend and go again for business lunches.

This pub. Ugh. A horrendous queue. Entirely unaided by staff allowing their friends to help themselves behind the bar and not serve people who had been waiting for a very. Very long time. I’m not a happy bunny. Not a happy bunny at all.

Great pub, lovely staff always helpful, especially the wonderful Georgia with her 10/10 service. Best believe I’ll be visiting soon.

Great pub, lots of real ales, good staff , atmosphere and food, also shows sport, halloween night coming up, looks like its going to be alot of fun.

I visited this pub recently and was delighted by the impeccable customer service. The ambiance was of high quality and the drinks came fast with a smile. To note Amelia was the young lady serving me and I was very pleased with her service. I would most certainly recommend this pub to everybody else as a must go.

I went to the pub a couple of weeks back with my best mate after a great day out and the meal just capped off a wonderful day. The food was fantastic as well as the customer service. A special mention to Amelia who was excellent for the whole time she served us during the evening and would definitely recommend this place to anyone who was planning on coming into town.

Came to this lovely pub after going out for the day and was served by a very friendly member of staff called Amelia. She was welcoming and made me laugh. Also had great knowledge of the range of drinks and food so was able to offer suggestions. The food was great too. We had macaroni cheese and a pizza. Thoroughly recommend x

Went to the star as we had heard many good things. And one Amelia behind the bar made our time a lot more enjoyable with her fantastic customer service and great suggestions on what to order. Would definitely visit again!

The Star is one of my favourite bars in Stortford! There is always a great atmosphere, great food and drinks, and great service. Georgia (who works behind the bar) is exceptional - she always greets you with a warm smile, has on-point recommendations, and always goes the extra mile for you. If you’re looking for a friendly and comfortable bar to spend the night, the Star is the place to go!

I frequent this establishment occasionally and I always have an amazing time, good beers, good food and good company! Georgia served me on my most recent visit and she was the perfect host! Great knowledge of the local ales and excellent banter! Will be visiting again.

The food is amazing, the inside and outside areas are cosy and the staff are so lovely and friendly. In particular Georgia Seymour was very accommodating.

It’s always a great time at the Star. There’s a good crowd most nights to socialize with and the drinks are great. Georgia who works behind the bar always takes care of me and my friends and is super helpful whenever we need something, she always goes above and beyond for us. 100% recommend trying this place out!

I've always had a lovely time at the Star whenever I go with my friends and family.The bar staff are always so lovely (especially Laura and Amelia whenever I bring my son in!) And we regularly end up having great conversations with them if we sit near the bar.Food is always delicious and quick. I highly recommend their ales as well! Can get a bit busy on a weekend night but i just tend to go other days!

We came here just after lockdown and had to wait an hour just for 2 burgers. We said this is awful timing but it must be because hospitality has just come back. We then today decided to give it another chance and use an app with a promotion to get a free pint. We would have had a meal and couple other rounds but we were greeted with "we dont know anything about this promotion we will have to ask our head office what to do" later we asked what they said , we were told "they have gone home, we cant do anything" thought it was ironic as we were leaving because the same app and promtion were advertising outside there pub. Definitely wont bother looking at the star in the future.

Service brilliant by very pleasent and helpful staffExtemely clean especially the toilets, if the toilets are clean then the beer pipes are, this meant that the beer is great, and it was. My friend said the wine wasvery good also.The food was of very good quality and very well priced. One of the best places I have ever eaten including places in Europe.

Firstly a very ‘safe’ but comfortable experience today. Food was hot, plentiful and good. Staff were lovely, shout out to lovely Lou. We will definitely go there again.

I visited Star for the first time since Covid started. Staff that was on shift looked organised and everyone was friendly and welcoming! Pub looks different from what we used to see and service cycle changed as well, but bar staff made our visit smooth and gave us a feeling "like nothing changed".Lady on the doors was very polite and explained us all the rules on how it works now. We were offered to order first round of drinks with the lady that met us on the doors while sorting out the app to order next rounds - this helped, as app took a while to download!Definitely recommend this place to visit!

I visited This pub on the recommendation from a friend and I can happily say I was not disappointed, The food was fantastic the service was quick and friendly and all very reasonably priced ! I will definitely be making a visit to this pub next time I am in the area.

Great place to feel safe. Welcoming bar staff. Considering what they had to deal with last night, great job.

I sat down om the table and the first order the manager dropped the drinks on us, not even an apology given or extra after that, we order cockteils and we ask for 2x1 as we didn't realised they were 2x1 and we paid for same money on individual cocktails but they didn't give us the option or a smile, suddenly I was asked to get back to the main door and come back in again as no one saw me going through there and they had to follow the one way system. I will not go back after this having such as beautiful pubs in the área.

MISSY is the best bar maid in the world!! She is so lovely and down to earth, she is honestly the most happy and bubbly person ever the best person to bring you drinks and get a long with, GO MISSYYYYY!!!!!!!!! We went to the bar for a night out and we were told to “f*****g move” by one of the staff. They took nearly an hour to serve drinks and they were just so rude in general - I think it’s very unprofessional the way that waiters spoke to us

It’s been a horrible year so we wanted to do something as a couple that felt Christmassy. I booked lunch in The Star we arrived approx 1.30 and after a a long wait ordered drinks and a load of food. Got our drinks after about half an hour then an hour after that still had no food . Staff were pleasant but until we asked ignored the fact that the kitchen was having a meltdown. Offered a refund which we took ,went around the corner .to Giggly squid and had a lovely meal. We want to support local pubs but for goodness sake get your act together. It’s the Saturday 2 weeks before Christmas but they were overwhelmed with orders ! Poor management and bad communication sort yourself out .

While the food was average, the service of this food was not good. Overpriced and long waiting times. Simply walked past by members of staff numerous times with empty glasses and plates. When served after a long wait I asked what beers were on tap and I was responded too with “theres lots”. Great I’ll have one of those.

2 pints of beer both flat one after the other. Did not ask if we had a CAMRA card. Poor and slow service at the bar. Told pint was flat so barman proceeding to poor it in another pint glass and told me is was the glasses fault for the flatness because of the widget?!?! Bacon on burger was like a kids portion.

Lovely pub and staff are really friendly. Lee was really helpful and made us feel welcome. He made great drink recommendations and was really knowledgeable. He made us feel completely at home Highly recommended visiting just to see him. The food was excellent and the service is top notch...

We were planning on making the most of the eat out to help out, so booked a table at the Star for Wednesday evening. Due to COVID restrictions numbers are restricted as this is a small pub and booking is essential. So you would think, OK people have booked I have advertised online that I am doing food, I have signed up to the goverment eat out to help out scheme that I would have a queue of hungry customers willing to part with money, after having been shut for a number of months. But No! We turned up to wait outside to be seated, no menu, went to the bar and 1-1.5 h wait for food at 8pm! Unbeliveable ruined our evening we left, not having ordered, but people, can no one plan in this pub? You have lost our custome and future custome, terrrible.

On a trip out of Stansted and time to kill and need of dinner. Star looks good and the Covid precautions all sorted. Beer from Tring brewery good but the salad was rather disappointing. To say there's less slimy things in my fridge would be accurate. Salad needs sourcing daily. Don't be put off,just avoid salad.

We have visited this pub a few times, mostly for drink but we had a lunch the other day which we really did enjoy. We didn’t go out with the intension to eat however im glad we did. The place has a very cosy feel about it and the staff are very helpful. The outside area will be nice in the summer. We will be back

I like coming here for the nice pub vibe. Food is fine, never incredible, but as it’s super affordable you’re getting what you pay for. Better to come here for a drink than a special meal

Lovely building, but staff are rubbish and food is discusting. Staff are there to have a good time and spent more time talking whilst customers waited.

Here for beers and was not let down. A lovley town pub with a country atmosphere. Really fine when the weather is bad but has the outdoor space too even when it is cold as there are heaters.We didn't eat but from what I saw it is popular for food so we'll defintiely be trying out the cuisine. I did note some other Tripadviser reviews but all I can say is that when my group were looking for a table it was noticed and I was approached at the bar to say we'd been noticed and a couple of tables were coming free which would make 6 places if we wanted to eat - and I think that was really good and proactive!

Went here twice in two days, once on a friday night for drinks and again for lunch the next day. The service both days was horrendous. 30 mins to get a drink on the friday because they thought it would be a good idea to have three members of staff working on a friday night... Then the Saturday we ordered lunch and waited over an hour. When I asked what was going on the barmaid said they'd had six orders come through at once. Six? They've got about 25 tables so god forbid they actually get busy! No apology from the rude barmaid or offer of a free drink or anything. Nightmare, dont waste your time or money here.

Was at the pub with a group of friends,went to get a drink at the bar and were frankly ignored. Barman served the person next to us and then proceeded to go out the back whilst on their phone. When he did finally re-emerge he went to the other side of the bar which already had two members of staff serving it. Waited for over 20 minutes before deciding to go to a different pub in the area to actually get a drink. Very disappointed with the service.

Great pub great staff, but suddenly a problem with wasps and nobody seems to want to do anything about it, so maybe head office can give them a nudge.

Went to the star as a birthday meal for my boyfriends mum abd the food was lovely. We waited 45 ish minutes for food but it was busy so it couldn’t be helped. All the food was really nice and reasonably priced too. The men working on the bar were friendly and funny and it was nice to see them having a good time. Definitely would come again!

The staff behind the bar were incredibly rude. Now that the place has been renovated they think they are superior I guess!!!!

Visited late on a Saturday night. Friendly service and good choice of real ales as well as cocktails. Always seems well kept and efficiently run.

Terrible service, waited over an hour to receive food! Not apologetic at all. People who arrived 20 minutes after us received their food before us. Extremely disappointing.

We tried here for what we thought was a quick family lunch, when we arrived it was not very busy, however took 90min to receive our food and we even watched a few people arrive after us to get food before is. The food was nice but service was too slow and no apology was given, wouldn't go again.

The food is actually pretty decent and well priced - and the drinks are always flowing! Go here regularly for drinks so was pleasantly surprised with the range of vegetarian on the menu.fast service order at bar

. We come to Bishops Stortford every month or so to visit our son and The Star has always been our pub of choice for dinner and a few beers. And it is usually good.

Went here one Sunday lunchtime for a 'quick bite'. After 45-mins of ordering, still no food. Checked with the barman and was told it would be another 10mins. After 15mins, food eventually showed up as we were making our way to leave. Food was overcooked, stale and barely warm (clearly had been left under a heat light far too long). On paying the bill, was offered no discount from the barman or compensation, just a half-hearted apology. Place seems to be being run by a group of kids, needs someone in authority to take control of the place. Customer Service lacking in all areas. Don't bother.

The food in this pub was awful,the pastry on the meat pie could only have been made by Costains,the "buttered"mashed potatoes had only seen butter through the window and was dry & crumbly and to call frozen peas & sliced carrots a "selection of seasonal vegetables " is unbelievable.The red wine gravy was total oxo cube with the consistancy of unset blancmange.My wife was given a macaroni cheese with meat on top because the server had pressed the wrong button,the meat on top option is not even on their menu! When i told the member of staff the meal was very poor his response was "thats what you get with frozen pies " There is no way i could recommend anybody to visit this establishment to eat.It may have been proved by the fact the eating area was mostly empty on a Sunday lunchtime.

A good selection of beer, better since the (refurbishment) and kept reasonably well. Unfortunately at busy times the service is woeful, with too few staff spending too much time chatting to their friends while the queue at the bar builds up. I may try again in a few weeks to see if it's any better

We visited the Star for the first time since their renovation. As far as I was concerned the only things that needed renovating were the toilets and the kitchen. The only things that haven't been renovated are the toilets and the kitchen! The outside area looks great and the tables and chairs, carpets have all been changed, it looks really good but please please do the toilets, they are pretty disgusting.

Went for quick bite before cinema and chose from the 2 meals for £10.50 menu. These were surprisingly good. The staff were very friendly and the service was efficient.

Would recommend this cosy pub for superb service, excellent food and a great selection of well kept ales.

Worth 4 stars all day long.Good selection of local and national ales at excellent prices.Staff were excellent and genuinely pleased to help. Food is honest pub fare at very reasonable prices. Always go here when in Stortford as a firm favourite with the family. Has a pleasant enough beer garden but also enjoy the interior later in the year. Lovely feel about the place and one for the shortlist when you are town. Great work all round. Only gripe was a little slow on the food last weekend but otherwise almost full marks

Visited here during an evening in Bishop Stortford whilst awaiting an early flight from Stansted the next day. I can happily report that this historic and popular pub serves some fantastic and well kept ales - and the food looks really good as well. Will definitely return when next in the area - highly recommended

Went with a crowd and they staff were friendly the food was good and it had a nice bar atmosphere. Thursdays special of 2 pies for the price of one is good value.

Called in for a pre-dinner pint. Didn't eat but the food looked fresh and tasty. Excellent atmosphere and friendly staff

Went with a group of friends for a recent food and drinks evening. Excellent food, and plenty of it. Drinks were also very reasonable. Service was excellent. Recommended pub.

We have now been back to the star after boycotting it for several months due to such poor service due to the bar staff and their attitude and we are so glad we went back. It seems like it is under new management and thankfully they have new bar staff which are brilliant. You no longer have to wait ages to get a drink as the staff now work the bar properly. We have been in a few times now on a Saturday afternoon and Jak and Deanna work the bar efficiently and conscientiously just how a bar should be run. We haven't eaten here since our last bad experience but the food does look like it has vastly improved. Well done for turning this lovely pub around, it just shows it is all down to the staff and their attitude no more waiting to be served and all done in a friendly manner. We will now be a regular again in this cosy pub.
