Went to bike night friendly people nice village location great in summer

Saturday 19th October 2024 12:30 pm. Looks lovely from the outside nice on the inside, but only two customers in the bar and no chef till 6 in the evening we were told, we didn’t stay, not even for a drink. Lack of customers and one bar person you have to ring a bell for indicates this place isn’t used much at all. Toilets lovely. Parking ok. Although there is a white abandoned car in the middle of the car park with thick moss growing around the area on the floor the car is stationed and green growing on the car itself. So it’s been there while. Bit weird. Reply to owner’s response: 20th October 2024. Thank you for your swift reply to our review. If you read our review properly you would see we visited your establishment at 12:30pm that day, don’t know why you mention 3-6 is a grave yard shift in relation to our review, it’s irrelevant. Also when I visited 6 weeks ago I found it rather quiet that Saturday too, similar time. You mention the kitchen there is open 12-3, 6-9. We were told by the barman there was no chef in till 6pm. To avoid disappointment in future may I recommend you put up a notice on the bar informing anyone wishing to order food so as to avoid confusion when this happens again as you advertise lunch between 12-3pm. Between 12:45- 3pm The Chequers pub in Bradbury End on the edge of Stevenage was very busy in comparison to your establishment further disproving your previous statement as it was getting busier when we left after 3pm. Concerning the abandoned car, the local council does not take well over a year to respond to a report of an abandoned car on private property. Neither does the DVLA. Especially if it’s untaxed. I know they have been there for some time by the depth of the moss surrounding one of them. There are two. My suspicion is that those two cars are owned by you or someone you know judging by your response to me. I don’t need to get my facts straight as you suggest. In my opinion having two cars side by side collecting moss literally is an eye sore on a pretty attractive pub location. .

This restaurant is separated from the bar, its were the landlady welcolms you with a happy smile, the food is excellent which is cooked by her husband. The staff also make you very welcome. Sunday lunch it’s best to book two weeks before to avoid disappointment, but what can say when you have a good reputation.

Really disappointing over priced poor quality meal. Alarm bells should have been ringing when we asked if food was being served and barman (who was really pleasant)didn’t know. Asked not to have peas so no other veg or salad even offered. Two different pies ordered-one meat, one veg that were ok but certainly not worth the £36 we paid (with a drink each) Not an enjoyable experience.

First visit here for dinner on the way home. Staff friendly and obliging. However, almost a 55 minute wait for food to arrive. We were told that food would take a while but not expecting to wait for almost an hour. Some confusion with paying the bill but sorted out in the end.

The George and Dragon held a wake for my grandfather. The food looked and tasted amazing, and the service was outstanding could not of faulted the staff at all. Was really pleased with our experience here and would definitely return soon and would highly recommend! x

It’s a wonderful place for a meal, but weekends get full so book up early. The staff are always helpful and will always try their best for you. The landlady and the Landlord are always on hand .

We found the George and Dragon by chance after a visit to Bennington Lordship. The welcome we received could not have been better and we enjoyed an excellent lunch from a reasonably prices and varied menu.

We had a big birthday suprise here on 10/02/24 with 22 people the food and service was amazing! Would highly recommend this place we will be back thank you all for making my mums birthday so special 👍

The location I visited was truly magical, and I found myself savoring every moment spent there. We came as a large cycling group on 31 October for lunch. We had preordered on Google Sheets - everyone was served within 10 minutes of arrival with drinks served at the table. We are occasional visitors and this is one of our best pubs for food quality and service. Can’t recommend it too highly.

Five years after my previous visit and under a different regime, I suffered an equally disappointing lunch last Saturday. The sandwich menu has 'Soup of the Day' at the top of the list, with a choice of White or Brown Bread "freshly made daily". There's nothing beneath to suggest otherwise, so reasonable to presume the same bread is used for the sandwiches..... It was late on Saturday lunchtime and the kitchen about to close, I would've prefered roast beef in brown bread, but with neither available, settled for 'thick cut ham' in white... Well.... if the bread was freshly made that day, it was in a factory on Pin Green Industrial Estate (North East Stiffenache, a few miles away) And if that's "the Butcher's" idea of thick, you'd be able to see through his thin cut ham; wafer thin would be as gossamer on the wind! In fairness, the meat was tolerable, although not overly generous. The bread, however, was truly revolting. And the beer. Green King IPA or Timothy Taylor's Landlord. I don't drink soft drinks, so settled for Landlord, which was ok, but not brilliant. So, much like my last visit (under the previous management), I won't be returning under the current regime...

We are a St Albans cycling club visiting a different pub each Tuesday. We visited yesterday 31 October with about 18 cyclists. We had preordered on Google Sheets. Within 10 minutes of sitting down all our food had arrived and drinks had been ordered and delivered at the tables. Very good food and superb service. The George and Dragon is now on our best pubs list.

Visited yesterday for a wake and it is a lovely pub. The staff were so professional which is rare these days. The buffet was exceptional. Everything home made and was delicious best buffet I’ve ever had. Talking to people said that their tapas is amazing so will be going back soon. Well done to all the staff at the George and dragon a lot it pubs could learn a lot from you and your customer service and food

Great pub, nice atmosphere and not overpriced like some pubs in Hertford

After a five mile walk I was very glad to arrive back at the pub in Watton at Stone. A friendly welcome, and I enjoyed a tasty sandwich and a delightful chocolate sponge cake and ice cream dessert.

Called lunchtime with walking group + 2 dogs. Good value tasty food and friendly welcoming staff.

There were 7 of us, And our meals were excellent, starters and main meals were so tasty and plentiful, very friendly and efficient staff, food was lovely and very reasonably priced. will definately be going there again.

Ordered an ABERDEEN ANGUS burger. It was no more Aberdeen than I am. Grey in colour, undercooked and clearly a frozen product. Reminded me of something youd get from a burger van in a layby. Way overpriced at £12.95

Restaurant has great choices for vegetarians & all the meals were very tasty. Staff were friendly & the service was good. The dining room was pleasant. Overall an enjoyable experience.

Went to the George and Dragon for a late lunch and were not disappointed. From the friendly welcome and the efficient service, to the delicious food (a chilli con carne and a sandwich) and the pretty garden; this pub was the perfect place for catching up with a friend I'd not seen for several years 💖

Great pub , great food , recomended

The George has changed hands several times but now it’s back to very good, We had Sunday roast beef there but one of the family is vegetarian so it’s not always possible to get a good meal, but this time they said it was very good. So take your family and friends there, and have a good meal. They also have outdoor seating.

Really friendly experience , new Landlords have made a fast improvement to what was a declining pub. If we don’t support pubs making an effort to provide good service and good food they will disappear

We met Jill, who was an awesome barmaid. Made me and my boyfriend feel very welcome. We sat and had a drink with the landlord and lady. Helen and Mike were fantastic hosts. I will definitely be going back in the future xx

Never been here before. We were welcomed from the minute we arrived. There was a lovely atmosphere and the lady who served us, could not do enough, to make this a lovely experience. The food was so good and great value. Even my very fussy auntie enjoyed it! I can’t wait to visit again and try out the food in the evening, as the menu looks great! Friendly staff and my type of pub a typical country pub and atmosphere

I recently went to this pub I was not happy there was poor service with some of the waiters were rude and rolled their eyes. Also half of the menu was not available. The food was meh

I wish I could be more positive when writing this review as the food was very nice, however the service not so much! Understandably there was 21 of us which made us a big group to deal with but over hearing us being called 'a nightmare' before we had even left as we wanted each family to individually pay was unprofessional. Whilst waiting for everyone to arrive people were standing around, the women dealing with us became visibly irritated and then again at the end became rude and snappy due to people having to drop out because of covid-19 although this was made aware over 24hours before the dinner.

No brake between 3 course meals big booking but made comments about us "there A night mare"that's so unprofessional and we did nothing wrong no one was drunk either so don't see what we done that was a "nightmare" and there was a mistake with the bill and that was no fault off our own learn some manners I would never go back

Went with friends for lunch. Pub is dog friendly, good choice on menu which also offers small plates. We had fish and chips, ham egg and chips, homemade tomato soup. All excellent and very reasonable priced. Will certainly be going again.

Met friends for lunch. Lots to recommend, dog friendly always a plus for us. The lunchtime menu had just the right amount of choices. We were all very happy they offered small portions as we all have small appetites. Even so we couldn’t quite finish our meals. Homemade tomato soup, fish and chips, ham egg & chips all excellent and and very reasonably priced. Service friendly, made to feel welcome. Will return to try Sunday roast.

Enjoyed the cosy surroundings and greatly improved décor. This is a pub that deserves to do well after a somewhat neglected previous existence. We found our chosen meal of fish and chips excellent with the batter so light and crispy you would liken it to a tempora coating, and the triple cooked chips are to die for.

I carried out a review on this old pub that has had significant renovation works carried out making it a very nice establishment and rated it three out of five. There was an issue with a service charge which was not listed on the menus or was advised of this charge when paying, I was informed by the landlady they would reimburse this charge when I was next in so as I WAS playing darts for there team this I did on Wednesday 19th October, I did not take the money and got the barman to put it in the help the hero's charity box. After I had left the pub at the end of the night my team captain was informed I was now barred from the establishment until I apologised and removed the review, I'm not sure if me taking the money back or putting it in the charity box caused this reaction but not even told to my face. Well at the age of 69 after 51 + years of attending pubs across Hertfordshire and beyond I've been barred for the 1st time. So beware a negative response will result in you being barred.

Called in for steak night with 3 friends have to say was fantastic as always great food cooked as asked for as I’m fussy with steak but was spot on. Great value can’t wait for burger night again too

Very welcoming and friendly place, good range of beers and good selection of gins for my wife I'm becoming a regular now playing darts there coming back soon to try food with wife. Well called in on 29th September for a lunch ordered our drinks at the bar and went to our table to look at menu I chose ham, egg & chips @£8.50 and my wife ordered ploughman's @£8.00 both average prices although we thought my Wife's portion size was a bit small. I went and paid bill got receipt and left got home and looked and I now find a 10% service charge we new nothing about but to make it worse that was on the drinks I delivered to our table. We are part of a group in the datchworth and area that go for food and drink evenings this won't now be on our list. Since making this report I have received my service charge back which was donated to the help the hero's charity box, but I now according to my darts captain I'm barred from the pub until I apologise and remove the review.

Can recommend the fish and chips and chocolate pudding -washed down with a couple of pints Madri and Ice Breaker

Fantastic food with a warm friendly atmosphere. We tried both the pie and burger evenings in the summer and popped in for lunch this week, food was excellent! And they serve on Monday and Tuesdays which is rare in the area, most pub kitchens are...

Monday Pie Night is excellent and very good value - certainly would recommend it . Thursday is steak night and once again very good indeed - a choice of four steaks (worth ordering which one you would like when booking) I have tried three different...

A lovely Sunday lunch enjoyed by all the family Well cooked and especially the vegetables cooked to our liking if I wanted al dente I would eat raw carrots.

Lovely pub recently refurbished. The food was cooked to a very good standard and the portion sizes were large. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Comfortable seating with plenty of room. Easy parking. Would definitly visit again. Good value for money.

Greene King have installed new landlords who are hell bent on destroying a much loved village pub. These people have made it clear to the locals that we are not welcome. The bar staff are lovely but have been told not to socialise with us locals, which I think is disgusting and borders on facism, after all you work in a pub to be sociable and patrons return because they like the staff etc. My parents used to drink in this pub when the Dinnings ran it, and I am so disappointed in who they now have "running" it. Although the decor is beautiful, the wrong people are in charge. Very sad days indeed.

We visited the George for Sunday lunch having heard good things about the food. We all ordered the roast which was very tasty, huge portions and great value for money. Service was excellent. Highly recommended.

food was alright. We went for a roast but wasn't as nice as we had hoped for. Could really do with a big make over inside. Not really somewhere I would take my kids.

New staff are top class and they know how to look after the Ale. I am 67 and eat out 4 times a week but have never in my life had such a high standard Sunday Roast and we be back many times. Thanks.

I only parked out the side to get my haircut the pub was closed car park empty . And the new landlord came out and was awful not a nice man at all completely arrogant dose not belong in a village .

Outside drinking only due to the C19 pandemic. Friendly Yorkshire service just like the broadband,! Watton at Stone is a great village and definitely worth a walk around.

Greene King have approved the spending of over £100,000 to give the pub a facelift and are advertising for a new tenant to run it. Planning permission for the alterations has been granted, so it's just a matter of time. Fingers crossed for a good...
