The Stanhope Arms in Kensington and Chelsea

Over priced food of poor standard. Paid £16 for grilled chicken salad. The chicken was leftover roast chicken that tasted dry and bland. On a bed of rocket with gravy and boiled potatoes. Gravy on a salad? Ew but Wasnt even tasty gravy. Not nice or worth the money at all. Staff very friendly though.

We were here as a family of four. Our first visit was due to the fact that we were looking for a restaurant in the immediate vicinity of the hotel. Luckily we found a table straight away. If you want to eat after 6 p.m., we definitely recommend reserving a table online, as it gets quite crowded after 6 p.m. We ended up eating here 4 out of 5 days. You order and pay at the bar and then have your food delivered to your table. Everything we ate was perfect: fish 'n chips, burgers, nachos, three kinds of fries, various snacks were all very tasty. Plus various types of draft beer, gin and tonic, cider. This pub leaves nothing to be desired. In addition, very friendly employees and a boss who said on the second visit: Welcome back! Very clear recommendation!!

We visited the company in March 2024. It is good to reserve a table through their reservation system. Food is ordered and paid through the application. It works fine. Tasty burgers, excellent fries. Fish and chips great fish, meat really delicious. Prices for London normal. We expected more expensive. Well, Slovakia is already more expensive than abroad with prices in many businesses.

Cozy place where to watch football and enjoy a beer. Fish and chips was ok but the nachos not recommended.

Popped in for a quick drink in the morning before heading over to the Royal Albert Hall. Staff were friendly and drinks well priced. Got a J2O and Ale for about £11 I think. Plenty of seating and toilets.

The evening of my birthday on March 18 was a beautiful evening. A lovely place and a particularly friendly waiter who lets me taste the beers before ordering. Fish and ships are not value for money. The beer remains light for my taste but that’s a personal observation. I recommend this place.

I ate here May, 2023. I wanted an English meal, came all the way from Toronto, Canada to get one. I had the steak and ale pie, sticky taffy pudding for dessert. It was as delicious as I hoped it would be! Thank you Stanhope Arms! It was money well spent!

Typical English pub with food and English beers.

Got the fish and chips which was great and well priced given the location (South Kensington), the fish was well cooked and not dry but not soggy either with a nice light crunchy batter. Aspall's cider and a pint of Greene King Abbot Ale were perfect accompaniments. Food, service and atmosphere were really good, would highly recommend!

My favourite pub in South London

Had a great Fish & Chips experience during our London visit. The food was delicious and huge portion. We had and paid our order at the bar-desk, and got the food with table service.

Right so… me and my mates went for a pint after work and my friend was rejected at the bar for her ID because it was a European National Identity Card. On the government website it says that these forms if ID are allowed to purchase alcohol and unfortunately the manager of this pub was very rude to my friend and rejected her without any good reason. The other staff were even apologising to us for their managers behaviour. I would highly recommend to stay well away from this pub even though everyone excluding the manager the staff are lovely. The manager has discriminated my friend for being Maltese and she has left nearly in tears because of this awful experience

The manager who’s name is Antoaneta was so incredibly rude, dismissive and argumentative when we had a complaint about rejection of a valid EU identification form. After asking calmly and respectfully we got shouted at for pulling up the government website and proving that the of form of id should be accepted. The customer experience was a disgrace and I would keep away- particularly if you are not a British citizen.

Food was ok but entire experience was ruined by terrible customer experience. Served by a bearded, bald man who was very unfriendly when I requested a new pint of lager due to it being flat. After this staff proceeded to stare at me and friends from the bar leaving us unable to enjoy our food and drink and lead to us leaving our food and drinks unfinished as we felt so intimidated. Management need to take a look at the people they employ if they're serious about providing an excellent experience to their customers as this seems to be a consistent issue in their negative reviews. Will definitely not be returning.

It is a nice pub friendly staff I prefer to go there every weekends and it is near to the Gloucester Road tube station

Food was average and not value for money but the whole experience was ruined by the rude service. Avoid at all costs

Incredibly rude and disgustingly unfair service - avoid at all costs. Came for the football and enjoyed most of the game sat with a couple of drinks. But then abruptly told with 10 minutes to go of the game that our table was reserved, despite there being no sign on the table. Pub was packed so we then had no seat or view of the screen. As the new occupants switched over, we asked if they'd booked: they clearly said no and seemed shocked they'd been provided a table given how busy it was. With a nail biting end to the game we stayed purely because we wanted to hear the outcome, despite the rude and frankly unbelievable behaviour of the staff member. A few minutes later, said staff member charged in an extremely aggressive manner over from the bar saying 'how dare you look at me' after absolutely no provocation. When we asked if the table had been booked his response was 'if I said it was booked then it was booked'. We then explained how the new occupants said they hadn't booked, and he angrily repeated his stance - which was now clearly a lie. He then got confrontational and aggressive, despite having kicked us off our table having lied about a fake reservation, presumably choosing us as young looking and easy to remove customers in favour of a group of men in suits. Have never experienced such appalling behaviour from a pub. For the pub management's reference it was a male member of staff, bearded and roughly 5'8. We will never be returning and actively encouraging local friends/family to avoid.

An extremely uncomfortable experience. Having bought multiple rounds of drinks over two hours, me and my brother were removed from our table because it was suddenly ‘booked’ without warning. Guys taking the table admitted that they had speculatively just walked-in but were going to order food. Everyone was drinking and there is no restaurant section in this pub so we were simply just removed from our table. On questioning the barman (5ft8 stocky, bald and bearded fella), he aggressively said that what he said ‘goes’ and challenged out of nowhere for a fight. With us having clearly rumbled his move, when we next looked over to the bar area, the same guy charged back around and unsolicitedly squared up to myself asking what my issue was. A really awful experience. I mostly feel sorry for those having to work with him.

Great little pub near Gloucester Road Underground, really enjoyed the steak n ale pie. The staff was very helpful and polite.

Beautiful traditional British pub, great tasty food. Steak and Ale pie was exceptionally good, same as the fish and chips and flat iron steak. Cooked into perfection, we enjoyed our meals sooo much. Thank you.

Nice atmosphere, good service and not expensive

Came here for Christmas lunch randomly. We stumbled upon it after realizing that we couldn’t cook Christmas breakfast at our hotel. The food was so good, the vibes were there, and we ended up having such a lovely lunch. We even decided to have dessert.

I had a disappointing experience at this pub. Despite clearly expressing we only wanted champagne by the glass, the staff poured it that way and later informed us it wasn't possible. The bottle price exceeded our budget, and although an exception was made, we were charged nearly £20 for two glasses. After we wanted some beer, a staff member (male, brown hair) made inappropriate comments about our spending choices, I quote ‘if you can afford beer you can afford to buy a bottle of champagne’. I refused and exclaimed that beer is still less expensive than buying a whole bottle of champagne we didn’t even want. He refused to serve us after I suggested a solution for their opened bottle issue. The service was frustrating and unprofessional.

Staff made a mistake, instead making 2 glasses of champagne opened a bottle and told us to pay for a full bottle. But we wanted just two glasses. We paid almost half the price for 2 glasses like for the bottle just because was really didn't want to frame the girl. After we wanted to drink some beer after, we were refused with the words that we could pay for a bottle of that champagne. And we will no longer be served.

Allowed A MASSIVE DOG in the pub whilst it was barking and snapping at servers and patrons, including small kids. Disgusting people, bartender refused to help. Never coming again and I recommend you avoid. I repeat, STAY AWAY!!!

Nice cosy pub, clean tables and quick service. Unfortunately that’s where the good part ends. My husband had the pulled turkey pie with mash and I ordered the Christmas burger and chips, but got the received the one. The food was “reheated” and not freshly cooked, definitely not hot. Especially the “mash”, as you can see in the photo. When I mentioned it to the waitress, who collected our plates, (unfinished, for my husband) she apologised and laughed. Definitely not the reaction I expected. We left, very disappointed. Unfortunately, won’t recommend it.

Found this pub around the corner from my hotel and noticed multiple other American tourists there as well. I got the fish and chips and have to agree with another review that said the meal was not spectacular but decent. The service was friendly and the atmosphere is laid back with reasonable prices. Very close to tube station as well.

The atmosphere was nice but the staff was horrible (The women in front of bar). I showed them my national ID with my DOB and picture but they said it is not a form of identification, they told me I need to use my passport because the law said so. I kindly told her I'm a university student and I can't carry my passport everywhere I go (its not logical) and she proceeds to say that it is not legal to show my national id. I've been to other pubs and clubs and they have always accepted my national id ... I'm very disappointed in the customer service.

What an amazing ambiance in this place! Great bar, great snacks and brilliant service. They were generous with their snacks and even upgraded it!

My mate and I had a splendid visit to the Stanhope Arms! We were milling about for a cozy yet lively pub in the area while we are here for the first leg of our British adventure. Highly recommend!

We had a quick lunch over here, they are offering traditional English food with tasty streak and ale pies and delicious fish and chips. We liked both and we will recommend to visit. Very nice pub with very good food. Best pub to go if you stay at the IBIS Styles Gloucester Road or Double Tree Kensigton, as it is just "across the street". Good service, very friendly.

Rude staff. Was staying nearby and would have made this a regular, end-of-the-day place, until rude staff drove us away. I guess I should thank them. We found a much better place just down the way.

A nice little neighborhood pub but maybe a bit touristy (I mean - we were tourists haha). We had to wait for our flat to be prepared so we stopped by for some lunch and a drink. The menu is very heavy and oddly varied, but I find that to be true of a lot of places in London lately. It’s not a bad thing but I do cringe a bit when they call them “fries” and not chips. We got some chips regardless, a grilled cheese (it was fine - needs a better cheese to bread ratio), and my husband got a pie (which was also fine). Had a couple delicious ciders and the pretzel with cheese dip. It very much felt like being in a brewery back in the States, which is probably closer to the vibe they’re going for as most of the diners were Americans. Service was nice and quick. No complaints, honestly.

This is a great pub for location, drink and food - Located just across road from Gloucester Road tube. Staff are friendly and service is really quick. Having been before for food on our last trip to London we visited again, for Sunday lunch and we weren’t disappointed. Great choice and quality really good.

Bought the steak and ale pie. Disappointing is an understatement. Mash had clearly been over-microwaved in a round plastic container and tipped onto plate. Could still see the markings of the container. Dry and dense with burnt areas. Peas were cold and undercooked. Luckily the pie filling was pretty good.

The Stanhope Arms was just a couple of short blocks from our London Kensington hotel, across Gloucester Road from the Tube station. It was the first dining option we saw that wasn't a fast food establishment, so my wife & I agreed to try it on our first night in town (a Saturday). We grabbed the last low table available, ordered at the bar (very friendly bartender handling orders), and waited for our meals while not knowing what to expect in the way of quality. My wife was happily surprised with the serving size & flavors of the steak & ale pie and buttered mash and garden peas. I was equally pleased with my Lighter Bites menu choice, a chicken breast & beechwood smoked streaky bacon served on sourdough with tasty coleslaw & a fresh salad garnish. It was a good start for our 4 night stay in Kensington, impressing us enough to return a couple of nights later. We would recommend Stanhope Arms for a pint & a meal if you are in the vicinity.
