Great food- book a table though as the number of covers are small. They also reserve you great seats in the comedy club do you don’t have to rush. At the intervals get your alcohol from the bar in the restaurant to avoid the queues downstairs. We saw 5 great acts - - something for everyone - and national names in an intimate venue. Would definitely recommend the Saturday nights there Have heard they do a great Sunday lunch

We decided to reserve a table before the Comedy Club downstairs. Easy to book a table and they reserved us a table downstairs for the show. The menu is great, lots of choice for gluten free, vegetarian options and even vegan options were offered (not that I am any of the above but it was noticeable that they have really made an effort to cater for everyone) I ordered the venison burger and it was cooked to perfection. My partner had the chicken with ham and she loved it also. Friendly staff and a nice relaxing atmosphere. I would recommend you give this a go. Competitive prices, drinks are reasonable also and a wide selection to choose from. Outdoor area for smokers is lovely and we really had a great night all round. Thank-you

Found this by chance looking for a decent meal. Were not disappointed at all. I had a risotto starter which was not only sublime, but was like a main in itself. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the location is easy to find. There is a restaurant one one side leading through into a large bar but the two are separate enough to not be treated as one single location. Although was a business meal, the ambience makes this a very nice location and I’m sure could be quite intimate.

We were just wandering around looking for somewhere for lunch and saw people sitting in the window with huge plates of food. Took a while to find the Sunday menu on a little page in the window but when we did find it we were found the Sunday Lunches were only £10. Or £12 for 2 courses. Lots of choice and not the usual boring stuff - e.g. squid was one of the starters. We both had roast beef. Proper beef, perfectly cooked veg and great gravy. Obviously a skillful chef. Only a few tables were taken but the place should have been packed. Very happy to recommend. We'll be back soon.

Visited The Stand New Years Eve. We didn't eat but the food looked good and it was very reasonably priced. A good selection of craft beers and many bottles to choose from. The comedy was good however the compete left a bit to be desired as did the first comic. Following their start I could only hope for better things and the club delivered with two good local comedians and a stalwart of the comedy circuit in Ian Levitt. He is always good. Will certainly consider visiting again and trying food next time.

I visited here today with my son and a couple of his friends. He had been before and said it was great and he was not wrong. There isn't a massive amount on the menu but they seem to change it daily as it had a date on it. We all went for a roast and were not disappointed. The meat was tasty and tender, the Yorkshire pudding was delicious as was the veg and mash. We went for the two course option which was good value and only £12. As it is nearly Christmas I plumped for the panetonne and Christmas pud bread pudding with eggnog ice cream - it was divine. The staff were lovely and we were not rushed. We had booked tickets for the Saturday Comedy Club and thought why not try the bistro. Quick phone call later and we're booked in. Very easy place to find. The menu isn't very extensive but the food is wonderful. For starters the wife had smoked chicken, ham hock & sun blushed tomato terrine, toasted organic sour dough, tomato & onion chutney. I had crispy squid, chilli, soy & ginger sauce. Both were wonderful, my squid was truly crispy not at all chewy and the soy & ginger sauce was a perfect compliment. For mains she had braised beef short rib, tartiflette, tender-stem broccoli, red wine jus. I had the Japanese-style fried chicken burger, kimchi cucumber, togarashi mayo, organic brioche; twice-cooked skin-on fries. Both were amazing but take note if you have the burger, remove the skewer that holds it together before eating. I didn't and stabbed myself in the chin. Very filling food, excellent value and the waiting staff were very good. So good that we are going back on January 7th.

We have been to the stand bistro a couple of times now (first time during restaurant week) and have found the food amazing both times. My boyfriend and I went for dinner before a show, he had squid to start which was excellent (and I was very jealous of) and I had the chicken and bacon terrine. Both very enjoyable. For mains we head steak which was cooked perfectly and the beef short rib which again was absolutely incredible. Neither of us had room for puddings! The service was great. Despite being a busy Saturday night we felt very well attended to and also felt we definitely got what we payed for. The bill was very reasonable for 2 courses each and a couple of drinks. Because we ate before going to a show we got our seats for the show reserved automatically so that we didn't have to worry about rushing our meal in order to get seats. Excellent night. We will definitely be back. On of our favourite places to go in Newcastle for a night out!

There is a lot to like here, with very friendly, relaxed staff and decent food, priced reasonably. However, there were bits that could be improved too. The chorizo on which my scallops were served was tasty, but too chewy; maybe better if cut thinner, to try to get it crisp. The sirloin steak was well-cooked, but as in so many restaurants, it was not seasoned. There was fresh pepper on the tanle, which saved the day, but the job of the kitchen needs to be more than to jusy slam the steak in a pan or under a grill. Still a welcoming place to eat.

The wife and I went here whilst the kids went to see Mary Poppins, I was not that hungry but the wife had a burger at £12 which I thought was quite expensive.Don't get me wrong the staff and food were great, just a little bit over priced. We then went down to the comedy club (paying £12 each for the privilege) in the cellar part, where we were told we were getting an award winning comedian that had been at the Edinburgh fringe.Well the first thing we noticed was that the burger from upstairs at £12 was only £5 downstairs, which made me a little frustrated shall we say.We then were subjected to a very un funny Australian comedian, and an even worse side act, that even admitted him self, "oh god how long have I got to go"Needles to say we left halfway through the second half, and found a walk around Newcastle a lot more entertaining.

We came here for a comedy show one night and decided to arrive early and eat before hand. The food was just perfect! It looked beautiful, tasted beautiful and was delivered by some very nice staff. To be honest I was only expecting something average at best which is why I had a steak dinner and my partner had burger and chips. I have to say my steak was cooked to perfection and although I rarely order steak I would happily go back. My partner commented that her birger was "the best she'd had!" And it looked it. The comedy show was amazing, I can't remember exactly how many acts there were but I think there were seven not including the headline act. I laughed until I was sore and for only £2 fee I was really impressed. In summary, if you are looking for a good meal, a couple of drinks and a fun way to waste a night you could a lot worse than to come here. Having committed to almost £200 of spend by coming here and then to the show on a Saturday night with our friends it went well until......Well 1st of all the food had been good despite the fact that a simple and limited menu had been split in 2 (can't remember what they called it). Squid in some kind of Asian spices was very popular and good - as was my quail and mushroom scotch egg. Mains were good too - the lamb and garlic mash was (surprisingly but very nicely) served as a kind of shepherds pie. Creme brûlée was delicious if small. Beers/wine/prosecco was good.Staff had generally been good. Bill came and it felt a bit steep. A steak dish charged at £20 (when listed on the menu at £15) hinted at a problem. Then having seen on line that the menu said 2 courses were £16 and 3 were £20 I could not see any of that logic had been applied to our bill.In raising the issue the waitress seemed to try and fob it off as beng a case of "I think the steak is £20". As for the 2 for £16 scenario "oh we changed our menu last week and we have told Edinburgh to update it. Sorry!". Before that our rating was at least a 4.A less nice person would have caused a scene but instead I leave knowing that despite good food they have "out of date" info and no interest in putting it right for the customer. As a result will not be back for food but will (see comedy club review) be back for laughs.

The staff are really nice, and I think I may have had a hangover, but they were tender and kind with me! Always a good thing. But the cake... it was last month now and I can't think of how to describe it other than, very rich, very delicious - you really need a hot drink or a glass of wine to compliment it (no wine for me on this occasion!) but: PHWAOR. It was just delicious. I'll try the savoury food at some point I'm sure. It was also decent value, which is always a bonus.Recommended! Good setting, nice people, delicious food. Lunched with a fellow former PricewaterhouseCoopers partner at this bistro - we both have exacting standards and were bowled over with the quality of the food and its presentation. It punches way above what you might expect from looking through the window, which has the appearance of a good coffee shop. Don't be fooled - come inside and one look at the menu tells you that you could be in for a treat. From then on it just keeps getting better. Friendly professional service, a good (inexpensive) wine list, the food itself...... A happy, relaxed environment to spend time with friends and loved ones

A really healthy size piece of salmon cooked to perfection with crisped up skin (just how I like it!), delicately infused with teriyaki and sitting on top of a mound of sticky rice with broccoli and stir fried vegetables. My comment to my dining partner on finishing was that I could genuinely just eat another - more, more, more!! My partner had the ox cheek which she described as the most melt-in-the-mouth experience ever - thoroughly satisfying winter-day food with rich, deep flavours in the fabulous jus that surrounded it.The Stand never fails to impress with the amazing food, staff and ambience. Always a treat. If you haven't been yet - I'd strongly recommend a visit.

For a birthday treat , having booked tckts for a great gig by Seymour mace ; decided to eat first at this bistro . We had sweet potato crispy balls and my son had tempura prawns . Both were very good and the sauces were really good . For mains we had hake and chips and the curry . The hake was very good tasty and a good portion . The curry was tasty hot , and certainly woke up my mouth !!! But it was delicious and a large portion . The house wine was pleasant and the beers interesting . There were some other things on the menu that I would really like to try . The gig was also very good . There were separate breakfast / lunch and evening menus , handy for town but enough out of the way and it was comfortable , and the outside space was very nice and spacious !

Pleasantly surprised with how good the food was, best chicken pesto pasta I've ever tasted. Had a nice chilled vibe and even though quite busy service was very quick. I work in Newcastle often, I'll definitely be back.

We popped into the stand on the off chance they had a spare table as it was a Saturday evening and their Bistro was quite busy. Luckily they did and the food did not disappoint! We both went for the Beef Wellington from their Christmas specials...WOW. The food was beautifully cooked and the red wine jus that came with it was one of the best I've had. For puds we had the shared a chocolate cheesecake as we were so full from our mains, again it was top notch and you could tell it had been made fresh. We have been many times before for the comedy downstairs but never had a chance to eat in the bistro, needless to say we will be back with friends. Really couldn't fault anything, staff were friendly and knowledgeable and they have some weird and wonderful spirits too.

Currently have a complaint lodged with Environmental Health as my food was contaminated with glass. Management were very unhelpful - from implying it didn't match any source in kitchens (cameras by our dining area so able to prove it didn't come from us). On a previous visit given meat in a vegetarian meal. Comedy is good, top rate acts in an intimate setting. Food would be fantastic if wasn't for these two disturbing incidents that really shouldn't happen in catering

Eating in the bistro before heading downstairs for the comedy show has two advantages. You really do have good food, and, if you eat there, you can reserve seats for the show so you dont have to worry about whether you will see or not. The menu is really good, however, the curry I had last time was a bit hot for me. The staff are very friendly. They even have vimto on tap! Still a child at heart....

the Staff were very friendly and the food was Amazing , best sunday lunch I've had for ages although the seating wasn't ideal ,a bit cramped on a little sofa and too low down for the table and sat next to a disabled Loo but all in all the food was worth forgiving the other downsides.

Booked a table for 10 and comedy tickets for dessert. It was a brilliant night! The food was great, the selection of real ales (and some very unusual ones) was fantastic and the comedy club downstairs was brilliant. We will definitely be back!

Just arrived back from a weekend away and wanted somewhere for lunch. Having seen the menu before we thought we'd give it a try and do pleased we did. 3 of us went God beef and 1 pork and asked God extra roast potatoes, everything came out piping hot and tasted lovely, veg comes separately which is great for me as I don't eat it and the extra roasties were great. Finished off with the crumble mmmmmmmmm, and at just £12 for 2 courses an absolute steal! 4 lunches, 2 deserts, 2glassed of wine a beer and a vodka diet coke for less than £60!!! Brilliant and will definitely go again, great service too from two young ladies with a great attitude ms sense of humor thank you

Visited The Strand with a group of work colleagues on the back of good reviews. Service couldn't be faulted - polite, attentive and personable. The food, though, didn't quite live up to our high expectations- all a bit dry and bland - the duck needed a sauce (could we have ordered one, not sure?) and the fish was, well,... Just a bit plain. So, good service, average food. Maybe just a bad night for us, bearing in mind previous reviews.

We decided to eat here before a comedy show downstairs - the evening menu is quite small, and I was a little disappointed that the sandwich menu only runs until 5pm. The staff were very attentive and friendly, and didn't hassle us even though our whole party hadn't arrived straight away.I ordered the fish and chips, which was nice - plenty of chips and two decent sized fillets of fish. The only disappointment was that the fish hadn't been drained properly when coming out of the fryer and there was quite a bit of grease on the plate. Still very tasty though. It was served with a dollop of pea and mint puree and tartare sauce. After having a look at the dessert menu, I decided to have the raspberry tart (I nabbed the last one) - my word, it was heaven! Really thick chocolate with a hint of tart raspberry, and the praline ice cream it was served with was delicious.Total price for 4 of us was around £20 each (including a supplement for a steak and a round of drinks), which I didn't think was bad at all for 2 courses.I would come back here just for pudding!

Great food but If you are in a hurry probably not the best place to go. We sat outside in the back garden and it was really lovely. We ordered sandwiches which were delicious but it took 50 minutes for them to arrive. I will most definitely be going back just not on my lunch break!

I must admit I have yet to tryout the comedy club but always have time for the bistro. I came upon The Stand when I first arrived in Newcastle and decided to find somewhere to eat. I often see what the daily specials are but with a menu that offers plenty of variety I have yet to be disappointed. Friendly staff and a well stocked bar with a regularly updated craft ales this makes for a great place to eat at away from the busy high Street chains.

Attended the comedy club this evening and ate burgers and chips in the club downstairs. Really nice and excellent value for money. Loads of French fries in dish, in fact shared out as couldn't eat them all! Others had veggie dish with wedges which they said was delicious. Been going her now since it opened, both in the club and in the Bistro upstairs and they never disappoint with food or service. The staff here are a fantastic team and are always friendly and eager to help. Keep on doing what you do because it works! See you soon :)

I travel a lot work wise so solo dine a lot. Spotted this place walking from my hotel to town and love bistro's. This was outstanding with a top quality menu for £20 for three courses. Each was excellent clearly locally sourced and delicious. The vibe is great here really friendly and helpful staff. I shall eat here as soon as I get back to newcastle.

My partner decided we would do something different on this day, so we got two tickets to 'The Bright Club' event at The Stand. This was supposed to be comedy for the more intellectual. It was, but this review is not about how funny The comedians were or how smart I am, it's about the food upstairs. After roaming around for a short while, looking for somewhere different to eat, we decided to come here.I must say, looking at the menu, I was not impressed. There was about 8 main courses on the menu, but once I got the food, I know why.I ordered the 8 oz Ribeye, rare.My partner ordered the lamb. When my food came, it was served perfectly on the plate (OH MY GOD, FOOD ON AN ACTUAL PLATE!!!) which is always a bonus in my eyes. The veg was cooked perfectly and my steak was clearly done by a pro. The markings on the steak were perfectly aligned, as well as being beautifully rare.My partner wouldn't shut up about how good he lamb was. It did actually look amazing. For dessert I got the Raspberry Tart.I am drooling right now writing this... So that's enough said there. My partner got the crumble, and she wouldn't shut up about how good that was too!Price-wise?Not bad for central Newcastle. Totally worth it when considering the quality of the food.Mmmmm... Raspberry Tart...

I've eaten at The Stand about 5 times for dinner over the past 3 years or so and have been really impressed every time. This weekend was no exception- really friendly, attentive staff, an interesting menu and a great atmosphere. A really nice change from the carnage going on in the surrounding streets on a Saturday night! The four of us all had different dishes, all of which were delicious and beautifully presented. Great selection of drinks too. Couldn't recommend it more highly for any relaxed occasion.

We had an amazing meal - all the starters, mains and desserts were delicious. The Vietnamese Pho had layer upon layer of flavour. The jus (or gravy to us ordinary folk) on the Ox Cheek was ridiculously tasty. And as for the Banoffee Pie, well it had us in raptures - even though we only shared one between four because we were replete from the previous two courses. The staff were all lovely and service was perfect. The Stand Bistro is a relaxed place to eat and drink, and then there's great comedy downstairs. And it isn't pricey either - a high quality dinner for the price of standard pub grub. A grand night out - to be recommended.

We were looking for somewhere to have lunch & my 10 year liked the look of The Stand, so we went in!He made an excellent choice - we sat in a quiet corner at the back (which was lovely as town was heaving). The outdoor area looked lovely, but the sun wasn't shining when we arrived. The menu wasn't huge but choice for the 3 of us. I had the veggie burrito, hubby had a huge delicious looking (& he said tasting) all day brekkie & the prodigal had a fish finger sarnie with chips (I had a taste of the chips & they were lush). The main course were a very reasonable £6. We then went on the have puddings. The creme brûlée was excellent & so was the banofee. They were £5 each. We'll be back - the food was very high standard & extremely reasonable. Oh & the house white wine is very nice too!

Beautiful large traybakes, huge and very scrumptious, which I got boxed and took home. Beautiful architecture and atmosphere in this old church. Staff were very welcoming and friendly. Definitely will be back to sit in and try the all day breakfast menu.

This is such a gorgeous idea, in a stunning city and a beautiful location. The lady that looked after us was brilliant and she informed us on all the beautiful rescues there. Treats were provided by CatPawCino and one is able to order coffees, drinks and toasties. I had cheese and tomato and it was lovely. Highly recommend and cannot wait to go back.
