Horticulture in Newcastle upon Tyne

We were at the first floor, bar section. Took 35 minutes to serve one drink. Pretentious atmosphere. Uninspiring music. Someone vomited in the toilet sink and no-one cleaned it. Definitely would NOT suggest this place to anyone.

Having read good things about this restaurant I was really looking forward to giving it a try. The venue itself has got a really nice vibe so we had high hopes. The menu has just changed and sounded intriguing, we asked how many dishes they recommend we order for 2 people and was told 2-3 each so thought that by ordering 3 each it would be more than enough. We were wrong! The stand out was the steak, really beautiful and a nice sharing sized portion (we actually ordered a second plate of this, it was so good). The lamb kofta with flatbread was one tiny kofta, the pork belly was a 2 inch square piece of pork that was maybe an inch thick, how they can say these are sharing plates is beyond me and for the price not worth the money at all. The king prawn pad Thai with crispy noodles came without noodles an no explanation why. When we eventually flagged someone down to ask where the noodles were we were told they weren't ready at the beginning of service. So what, you just miss it off without explanation? They then asked if we wanted the noodles so they brought some over but wished they hadn't bothered as they weren't very nice. The mussels were really good and a decent portion but nothing was given to clean your fingers or anything. The potatoes with parmesan and truffle oil were ok but under seasoned. After we finished the waitress suggested we go downstairs to grab a drink in Pepos but when we went down we were turned away as they were apparently fully booked, not sure why they're recommending people go there if they're fully booked. Very underwhelming overall, everything was just ok.

We went on a Sunday morning for breakfast with friends. It wasn’t busy and the service was quick. We tried quite a few of the dishes. The pancakes with the yogurt and the granola were good with plenty of fresh berries. The avocado cream on the avo on toast dish was too much, and could have used a bit more seasoning but the sourdough bread was nice. The Shloumi plate was tasty and filling, the eggs well cooked but unfortunately we got the wrong sauce. The biscoff pancakes were the highlight as it was the best dish we tried, not heavy at all and we all enjoyed sharing it. The coffee was also good. A plus is that is also dog friendly! Nice ambiance!

I found out about Horticulture when searching for best brunches in Newcastle, and I was not disappointed. The food was incredible – I ordered a Shloumi with hot chilli honey drizzle, and when I asked for extra black pudding, they added it to the toast instead of on the side, which was simply inspired. I showed up early for my reservation but was still given a seat immediately. Service from Mariola was fantastic; I was there by myself, reading my book, and was never made to feel like I was taking up space or being forced to leave. Highly recommend, I will definitely be going back on my next visit to Newcastle.

The food was nice however, everything had spice added to it, beams were too spicy imo for a breakfast. 3 of us ordered extra hasbrowns and were charged for them, obviously but the other 2 people were given them free as we were the last (only) table.

We attended a baby shower. Long wait for the food which was amazing once we got it. The daal and cabbage were a hit. The tables and bar area were dirty. Most of the drinks glasses were filthy and we had to request clean ones. A mixed experience and unsure if I'd go back to the restaurant.

Great food with an amazing selection, great coffee

This is a great venue, it’s really well designed and the menu is great, all the food we ordered was fabulous. We had 4 dishes and a side, the side can after the rest of the food so was wasted but it’s nice that everything comes out fresh.

Awful place. Waited 30 mins for drinks and then over an hour for breakfast, only to then be told they'd forgot to put the order through. Staff were really unapologetic and disinterested. Avoid at all costs.

Food is fabulous. Service was brilliant when me and my friend came. I'm not vegan or vegetarian. However i was quite impressed with the large variety of vegetarian stuff, as well as gluten free. I had the chicken skewers and the korean pork belly and the hummus flatbread. Only issue is booking a table online. My friend dealt with it last time. It doesnt make sense. I cant seem to ever book for a table during the evening... Is there an option to call to restraunt to book?

I’ve booked two work functions at Horticulture now and can’t praise the place enough. The food is superb, the staff are amazing and we love having the function room on the top floor to ourselves with a bar and our own toilet. This is our go-to place now and I’m looking forward to many more nights sampling the tasty delicacies they do so well

If your idea of a great meal is brushing elbows with your friends and sharing nibbles of various delicate dishes, this is a great setting for a communal experience that allows you to explore a whole host of flavours. Each of you orders a few plates for the table and they are brought out as they are made. A little sporadic, but peak freshness. Unfortunately when I went the place was reaching capacity , meaning increased noise, a few ordered items were forgotten, it was difficult to access the toilets, and the intimate setting began to feel cramped and claustrophobic. The service staff did they best they could in what is undoubtedly a stressful working environment, but if you're more of an introvert then try and go during a quieter time of day with your friends.

Decent food, a good amount to select from. The vibe is interesting as it is a bar downstairs and a restaurant upstairs so it’s a bit loud in the evening so I wouldn’t recommend if you were wanting a bite to eat in a quiet place but if you don’t mind then I would recommend! The vegetable tempura was my favourite.

average food for what you pay, but portion sizes akin to a starter. Still very hungry afterwards. Service not very accommodating to a disabled person in our group. Very limited veggie and vegan options at the brunch menu.

Food was super tasty. Staff were super friendly and helpful But service was slow and disjointed. Tables were sticky and needed a wipe, glasses and crockery left on other tables in the room and not cleared up. No handsoap in toilets.

Went for brunch the day after the Great North Run. Suggested by our lad who lives in Newcastle but I wasn't sure at first as we had just had breakfast at the hotel. How wrong I was because the food was amazing and would definitely be visiting again!! Photos below!!!! Visit this place, you will not be disappointed!

The food here is delicious! Definitely get the hash browns with vegan feta and pomegranate seeds as a side. The service was a bit off but I'd go again

Horticulture is great for a range of occasions. They’re known for cocktails, good vibes and a nice outdoor seating area. I’ve been here for this reason many times. The food I’ve only been here once and they offer a tapas style dinner menu, where plates range from £6-12 and you’re going to want 2-4 per person ideally. Great range of veggie options as well which is always good. Just make sure you book a table as it gets busy especially at the weekends.

Had a great Restaurant week brunch with family, got in early on a Sunday morning. Staff were so welcoming and made us feel great and made sure we were comfortable. Difficult to choose between the service and food cos both were amazing! Cheers ladies both the one who was running the day(sorry didn't catch your name) who ran around to find things for our lil girl to play with as well as Caitlin I think who served us. You guys made it such a great experience. Awesome!

Came here for brunch whilst they had their restaurant week deal on. I had the eggs bao-nedict which was sooo delicious and different. I would have loved it if it had a little more pork belly or another egg as I felt like I was left eating a lot of bao bun, the ratio could have been more balanced - but that’s just my personal preference! The service was great, our server Caitlin was so lovely and helpful and made our visit great! Would love to come back and try it out for dinner next time!

The place was really nice. Good atmosphere and music. The main problem was with the service and food. After we were seating, it took around 15-20min to be served. My plates arrived one after the other after 30 min, but the person I was with got them 50 min after we asked for food. We then had to wait for 15 more minutes for 1 plate as they forgot that we had ordered it. The food I got had too much oil (fried mushrooms) as well as a sauce that was too spicy. They told me about the spice after the food arrived which made no sense as it was on top of the food. I also had the tempura vegetables, the broccoli was ok however the fried lettuce just tasted oily It looked like it was understaffed so this might have been the main issue for time.

Excellent and very tasty food....Nice Friendly service as well. Only negative is we had to wait quite a bit for the food to arrive.... Hopefully that was a one off, would try again!

A friend recommended this place so I came to see it and I was very pleasantly surprised. Delicious coffee, meals carefully prepared with attention to detail, heaven for the palate! Syd and Sam were unreal waitresses and made a great effort on my girlfriend’s birthday - putting up decorations and bringing out a cake after our meal. Brunch bao and eggs royale were very good. Cocktails were lush. Will be back!

My boyfriend and I came for dinner tonight and we have both said it was probably our best dining out experience we’ve had. Between the food, drinks, and service there’s nothing we could fault at all. We felt so looked after and attended to all night alongside the amazing food & cocktails! Thanks to all staff for the lovely night :)

We managed to get a last minute booking for a group of 20 - we took the upstairs bar & from start to finish it was absolutely tremendous. The service was amazing & super attentive for our group - we opted for a buffet style menu & the food was incredible. Thank you so much for accommodating us - almost all of our party had not been before but I will guarantee they will be back again soon!

The team here are fab, and the food was amazing. Menu knowledge was top drawer. They made our anniversary meal extra special. If you're looking for a great place to come for food in Newcastle then this is it.

Food is absolutely brilliant but some portions weren't as big as we were expecting. Would recommend the horti fries, padron Peppers and Cauliflower steak. Took ages for us to get served after we ordered our drinks, probably about 20 minutes. Food took a little while to come out too but once it started, each plate came out quite quickly one after another.

Agonisingly slow. I’m talking 45 minutes + from ordering a drink to getting it. Zero acknowledgment of it either. Rude staff and it was my birthday!! Such a shame as I was so excited to finally visit.

Visited here on Tuesday for the first time on a date and had an absolutely fantastic time. Was made to feel very welcome by all the staff but Sam and Syd in particular made my day. Super friendly and helpful, overall made my first time in Newcastle one to remember!
