Kiln in Newcastle upon Tyne

Visited kiln for a birthday celebration Food was good but portion size of cod extremely small ..size of a match box! We booked online but we're not informed that we only had table for only 1hr 30mins. We ordered and ate our food as was brought by staff but when it came to ordering desserts were told that we had only 15mins left at the table!!! This is not enough time to eat a 3 course meal and have a coffee. Our meal was cut short abruptly and we felt rushed to vacate table and leave. Will not be going back which is such a shame because enjoyed the food

Visited Kiln with friends for a birthday Table booked for 7pm Arrived promptly but had to wait 5-10 minutes for table which we thought was Ok We waited another 10 mins to have our order taken and even longer to order a bottle of wine When the food came one of the orders of Cod was exceedingly very small compared to the same dish another was having We complained and we would have to wait 15 mins for a new dish or accept it and they would deduct it from the bill We chose the latter However when attempting to order dessert we were informed the table was for 11/2 hours only! Never before mentioned when booking! We said that we were ,ate to sit down but the very nice waitress said it made no difference and we had to be off the table for 8.30 This brought our evening to an abrupt end and we felt very shortchanged indeed The service was not good but the waitress was very nice and apologetic and clearly she doesn’t make the rules I would not visit again though nor particularly recommend it

Our waitress was very rude and made us fell uncomfortable and unwanted there. We asked for the bill, and waited ages to pay. Won’t be going back

Yet again no seabass or cod !! Makes the menu less inviting !! Why bother having a menu unless you are going to stock it ! Staff not bothered . We were regulars , no more !!!

We went around 7 on a Sunday evening and the restaurant was pleasantly busy. The service was great with food coming out straight away and just rolling as and when. All of the plates were delicious but I would definitely recommend the hummus starter! I’ve lived in Newcastle for 3 years and only just come across this gem but will definitely be recommending to friends! Bonus was the adorable dog at the table next to us

We had a very relaxing evening here, the music choice is excellent. Food was good, we are not huge fans of small plates, however we managed to put together a tasty dinner. Service is a bit hit and miss, the waitress was mostly working alone and it was busy. We would happily return.

A great atmosphere and location. The room is next to a pottery which can be seen lit up from your table, really cool. The food was mezze style and the advise on how much to have was excellent. The food was really good, and we will return!

The turkish breakfast with an americano is one of THE finest breakfasts Ive ever had. Lovely surroundings and nice people. What else could you want? So get your mullet out and your half masts on down to this exceptional hipster hang out. Open to everyone of course!!!

…but that seems a long time ago now. 
After my last rather disappointing visit a little while ago, I thought I’d give it another go. Didn’t have a reservation but the friendly staff member 1 got me a table. It was the only table without a candle or light, pretty dark there, I thought they would bring me a candle once seated but that didn’t happen. Small details… The entire service brigade seemed exchanged, I do like a bit of continuity, in particular when they used to have excellent staff and front of house who even knew what my first drink would be and what cocktail I’d have after food. I always wondered why there was such a high turnover of excellent members of staff, they certainly are an asset to the business, it seems strange. I ordered lamb koftas which I had in the past, also some crushed potatoes. The wait for my £9 cocktail was rather long, after perhaps 30 minutes it was eventually presented by staff member 2. I then waited for the food. 1 hour 10 (!) for the two rather sad looking kebabs put in font of me by staff member 3. Potatoes were a no show, I waited another 5 minutes for them and decided not to let the kebabs get cold. The £11 kebabs were very dense and chewy, the pickles required a chisel and I am sure it said cauliflower on the menu but that was missing too. The kebabs from years ago were tender and succulent, pretty much the opposite of what I had now. It reminded me of the burrata that once was really good but then became uninspired and dull. Once finished, staff member 4 asked ‘can I take these?’, referring to the plate and cutlery, without asking if I liked it. I had enough and asked for the bill. The bill still had the potatoes on it so I asked for them to be taken off. While waiting for the amended bill, staff member 5 came with some potatoes. So they didn’t forget them as I had assumed. I said “sorry, these are about 20 minutes too late, I am already in the process of paying”. Also, the £5 potatoes didn’t look crushed, they just looked like boiled potatoes to me. There were occasional problems with Kiln in the past, once I had badly undercooked fish on two separate occasions, I even contacted the place via Messenger with a picture and the reply was “we won’t reply via social … you can ring us” which I thought was very inappropriate, it’s not ‘social’ and I used that from of contact because I didn’t want to write a bad review as I really liked Kiln, then. Based on the pic, I would have been petrified if that had been my restaurant and I didn’t even get a ‘sorry’. Anyway, I won’t go back, I used to wave the flag, now it’s chaotic, the food has gone downhill dramatically, I also find it too expensive for what it is and where it is and I think that the monstrosity of a new bar has ruined a lot of the old cosiness.

Best food and atmosphere in Newcastle. Every dish is unique - of the kind you’ve never eaten before. Had no idea what half the options were, but you can trust the menu. Vegetarian dishes are fantastic. Thought each dish was our favourite until the next one arrived. Really intimate dining, perfect for couples. In the heart of Ouseburn too, so there are great pubs next door for before and afterwards. The working kiln is such a unique characteristic - the artist was working away the whole time we were in. This place is a gem. Unique dining experience, and brilliant value considering the craft involved. We had four dishes and drinks, for under £50. We paid the same at a cheapy Italian the night before. Can’t recommend highly enough.

I have heard it said that too many people write a review of a place when it is really good or really bad. This review is in the middle. The food was good although not exceptional. Service was fair to good. Table presentation wasn’t poor to fair - missing cutlery and a lack of plates. We were told we couldn’t pay using cash which is ok but were asked to leave our tip as cash-draw your own conclusions. When visiting places and they are very good or bad I will tell the staff that. The Kiln, in my opinion, was just ok with nothing really to commend it on or complain about.

I’ve come numerous times with different friends and have always had a great experience. The cocktails are well priced and the staff are responsive and attentive. I’ve found portion sizes to be a little inconsistent, however the quality itself remains excellent.

We recently went to Kiln on our first visit since the new menu came in. It is incredible. The food is superlative, with the lamb being one of the best things I've ever eaten, and the drinks are amazing too (the Hemingway daiquiri is now probably my favourite cocktail). All of the staff are lovely and the atmosphere is wonderful.Kiln is one of those places that you're a bit loathe to recommend in case it becomes impossible to get a seat, but it's important that people know how good it is. Book yourself a table and enjoy!

We were staying at a nearby hotel and wanted a light lunch. Kiln did not disappoint. After a sketchy few weeks of few vegetarian options in the Scottish Isles, it was so nice to have a choice. I went for the mezze plate which was exceptional. Each dip was different. The tomatoes and cucumber fresh and tasty and the bread delicious. My partner went for crushed avocado and poached eggs and cleaned his plate. The welcome was friendly and service relaxed but still attentive. I’d throughly recommend a visit here!!

HOW IS LAS IGUANAS RANKED HIGHER THAN THIS PLACE?! This is one of the most underrated restaurant in the area (currently ranked 158 in Newcastle)! We went in for brunch randomly as we couldn’t find tables in other places and this was by far the best brunch I have had in the UK. I had the eggy in the hole and my partner had the huevos rancheros. Both dishes were exceptional and the huevos was actually spicy (like in Mexico). The authenticity was real! Coffee was great and the staff couldn’t have been better! THEY MAKE THEIR OWN PLATES GLASSES AND MUGS TOO!!! Will make sure to come back here next time I’m in the country!

I’ve been here for coffee a couple of times in passing, but on Sunday afternoon, after strolling along the quayside, I decided to try the menu, which can only be accessed by QR code. Payment is also by card only. This style of cafe/bar, as well as having a pottery studio, is ideally situated in Ouseburn, which is Newcastle’s version of London’s Shoreditch and Hoxton, and is still ripe for further development. I was the only one siting inside at first. The outside area was banged out with patrons, who chose to brave the 23c degree heat, which only came with an intermittent breeze. I chose the ‘room temperature’ option inside, as well as the Meze Lunch Plate as my main dish. Both went down a treat together with an iced americano and orange juice (oh, and water). I couldn’t make my mind up between the desserts, so I went for the more indulgent option and ordered the carrot cake and the chocolate brownie. Both were equally delicious. The brownie alone was enough for two people. I have to say, Amy, my server (perhaps manager, I don’t know) was an absolute darling. She was very customer focused, and patient with me, while I was deciding where to sit and what to order. Nothing was a bother for her, and she was equally as amiable and patient when training up a new staff member, giving them helpful pointers.

We stopped here for a drink after a tour of the nearby Victoria Tunnel and a walk along the canal. It was very busy inside but fortunately we managed to find a bench (chunky wooden, not terribly comfortable) outside. The seats and tables were functional and presumably built quickly to conform to Covid regulations and re-opening. Our order got mixed up but the error was quickly rectified. We used the toilets inside which were clean.

I went to Kiln on Bank Holiday weekend. I was apprehensive as the menu was limited however I could not have been happier. The staff were fantastic and attentive, especially the waitress with the Australian accent and the young blonde woman in formal attire. The food was incredible. We had the aubergine and lamb between two and we left full. The cocktails were made to order and the bartender made the drinks as per our specific requests. For a venue with such good quality produce I expected the bill to be much higher for what we ordered. I have already booked to try the rest of the menu. I can't wait to return! I'm excited to see what Kiln offer next.

Food great, drinks, great, service from other staff members okay.On entry there were only a couples of tables taken with many spare. Given no one had approached us on arrival we went to sit down. The manager dressed in her formal dress asked what we wanted in a cold manner, acting as if we were stupid to try and take a seat ourselves when we hadn't been welcomed.About 1h30 into our visit, a staff member politely told us our table for 4 was booked but we could move to one of the many smaller tables still available. As such we did as asked.10 minutes later with the place still fairly empty the manager came over and told us our table would also be needed in 30 minutes and proceeded to get someone to take our payment without asking. We were actually planning to stay for lunch.Strangely the table we were sat on was filled by a group of 2 who hadn't booked before we left, on leaving the majority of tables were also still available.The manager needs reminding of the environment she's working in. Some of the waiting staff also badly lack communication skills, adding to the awkwardness.I won't even get into the lack of adherence to Covid measures.

Pagamos 14 el brunch y al final todavía teníamos hambre. Nos sorprendió la poca atención que recibimos del servicio.

El lugar era muy agradable para comer y beber, pero sentí que no había muchas medidas de seguridad para Covid. Estuvimos sentados muy cerca de otros clientes, falta de desinfectantes de manos, sin cubrir la cara del personal y todos caminan hacia adelante y hacia atrás alrededor de su área de descanso.

Despite having eaten here many many times I haven’t previously left a review in case this place becomes difficult to book. It’s amazing. The food, the atmosphere, the staff. Cool. Classy. Consistently Excellent. Great playlist too. Love it.
