Leaving a review for the pottery shop side of things, not the food; I've now had two mugs from the pottery shop at Kiln (one was a replacement for the first), both suffered cracking of the glaze on the inside within just a couple of uses (note: I only hand washed both mugs). Cracks in glaze are not food safe as they can harbour bacteria but also the mug just looks a bit crap now, which is annoying after paying quite a lot of money! The fact it has happened twice suggests an issue with the manufacturing, a real shame because they look great otherwise.

Style over substance The location and food doesn’t reflect the price point. The quality is decent I’m not disputing that, I’m happy to pay for quality £41 two small vegetarian pitta, two orange juices and a red pepper dip. Very small amount of goats cheese, with piece of gem lettuce filling the pitta basically The pottery for sale is nice but it’s stacked high on the shelves and the reason for that will be the price point again, too expensive.

What a wonderful place to enjoy and share some very tasty food! We were very grateful for Kiln fitting us in late notice. This is the place to be for anyone who loves craft and artisan cooking. Kiln have brought that together hand in hand. Some may be a little confused with the similar to tapas style of dining, for example the chicken thigh skewer doesn't come with chips and salad, but once you put this together with the reasonably priced smaller dishes, you can build a delicious meal for what you'd pay in most places. But the quality and experience are worth so much more. My friends wouldn't stop talking about this afterwards, which is when you know it's special. Maybe one day I'll return and have some fun working that clay! This would make a wonderful gift experience for a loved one, or a celebration for a special occasion. The staff were also lovely. Thanks for having us guys. Extra points if they made all of the dinnerware!

Kiln - one of my favourites in Newcastle. It’s been quite some time since we went but every time we go, we always receive high quality food! For me, the thing that makes Kiln so great is the fresh ingredients and herbs 🌿, it really comes across in their food as every dish is so fragrant. It’s a mezze platter type restaurant with Lebanese/Middle Eastern inspiration so we got a range of most dishes on the menu. The dips and flatbreads to start were so creamy and full of flavour - a really great way to start the meal. The mains had such a variety of spices which complemented their individual meats/fish/veg. Everything was cooked so well and gave me a similar feeling to having lovely home-cooking/dinner party vibes which is definitely a strong compliment! Overall, I’d definitely recommend going to Kiln if you haven’t already and it works best for a larger crowd so you can get a range of dishes to share!

Absolutely lovely food and experience at kiln today. Staff were amazing and the food was so nice and, as a veggie, very healthy but still tasty. My husband loved the cake and was even given an extra bit from the friendly staff who recognised a man who likes a bit of sweet treats. We had some pale pink French wine which went down a treat for me and my daughter . X

Their food is absolutely amazing. We had a variety of drinks and meals here. We sat outside which was lovely. We had to go inside to order but it's a short "trip" to get to the till. We had a few dietary restrictions (one of us is glutenfree and dairy free, the 2nd one is dairy free and allergic to soy) so I asked if some items could be left out of a dish. Not only was that possible, the front of house manager even offered substitutions so I ended up with extra thick slices of delicious banana bread to make up for the yoghurt I can't have, and one of my partners received potatoes instead of bread for his meal. There was a slight mix-up where another group had claimed our 3rd partner's food [that was *not* the staff's fault! The waiter asked them if they're me and they said yes...]. We hadn't even noticed except that the wait between the 2 courses was starting to get a bit long. The manager came to us personally to explain the mix-up and apologise for the inconvenience. He had brought the 2nd dish out for us, but thought we would prefer to all eat together. In order for the food not to go to waste, he let us have an extra dish on the house, and the people who (accidentally...) stole our food *also* got to keep that on the house. This should give you an idea just how friendly and welcoming this place is. Everyone we dealt with was incredibly friendly and polite and the food, as I mentioned, is absolutely delicious. I especially recommend the banana bread. It's the owner's mother's recipe - and you can taste that. If you're interested in pottery, you can also buy ceramics from them. All the dishes are served in the Kiln's own ceramics, and they're available for purchase. Definitely check that out. We didn't buy any because we're not in the market for new dishes, but if you are, consider them!

We came here twice during our weekend trip to Newcastle, so we’re pretty big fans. The flavours of the food and ambiance of the bar/restaurant are 5 ⭐️. However, we found the service to be a bit hasty in clearing our plates while we were still picking at dips. Secondly, the Turkish Breakfast was lovely,” - but it really needed a hummus or dip of some sort on the plate. Overall a great spot - the homemade sourdough pittas are incredible.

came for my boyfriends birthday with his family. It was mentioned in the booking, after they asked "whats the occasion?", but they made no reference to this at all which i found a bit weird. also, the blonde manager woman was kinda terrible and seemed annoyed to be serving us? huge props to the guy with red in his hair, he took over serving and was pretty sick and my bfs mum loved him. portion wise/money wise, the portions are small and they say to get 2-3 per person. please bare in mind the hummus comes without pita so you have to pay extra for pita (slightly confusing..... what the hell). really yummy food to be fair just expensive and dont think I would come if it wasnt an occasion. would come back if i was rich or there was an occasion. :) HUGELY RECOMMEND THE CHOCOLATE GANACHE THOUGH. Ate today after making a booking online. We thought we’d give Kiln another go after last few visits which were disappointing due to service and lack of staff interaction. We have supported Kiln since it’s very first week of opening, through Covid, through many facelifts & changes however sad to say it’s poor. Seated today pushed right to the back on a tiny table & chair right in the way of main thoroughfare to toilets. The issue we’ve had with the last few occasions is the ineptness of the staff who when you enter leave you standing awkwardly without even an acknowledgment & choose to look away as if it’s someone else’s job to acknowledge. Ordered cake, coffee & lamb kofta. Went to look at cakes and abruptly asked what else I was having, really poor communication with other staff and with customers. Food placed down, no interaction, no returning to checking all ok, just really basic things in hospitality. Kofta overpowered with garlic and very basic for cost, sliced onion , cucumber and mayo in pitta. I ordered a coffee however my partner who wanted a beer was never asked what he’d like & staff member walked off before he had time to say. We watched on awkwardly as a large table had been over charged and the waitress stood there blankly looking at them instead of trying to resolve the situation for around 10 minutes. Paid the bill no interaction again to enquire if all had been ok and no ‘goodbyes’. Just poor across the board.

Best restaurant in newcastle. Period. Serving Middle Eastern/Mediterranean style tapas which were SO flavourful and fresh made with high quality ingredients, the food was well presented, the atmosphere was super cozy and comfortable, we got all but 2 dishes on the menu as we wanted a range of dishes to try; most dishes were 10/10 however falafels were dry and over cooked, they served a nice range of cocktails - although I didn’t like mine as it tasted too much like liquorice (but we went for my birthday celebration and they took it off the bill as a present🫶🏻❤️). The staff were so so kind and super friendly, we were just chatting away and we they even gave us really good recommendations for dishes - super polite and knowledgeable about their restaurant. There is no competition as to what the best restaurant in newcastle is, it IS this one! 💖 (and I’m a simple girl so obviously my fave thing was the houmous and freshly made pita😘🤌🏼) NEED to go back for brunch!

I visited Kiln this Sunday with my wife and two young kids. We got booked no problem and the staff seemed attentive and pleasant. The food took quite a while but the staff were happy to oblige some pitta whilst we waited, as the kids were getting restless. The food was delicious and all was good. We asked for the bill as we were ready to leave. This is where the 3 star rating comes in.. As the young member of staff brought over the bill, she mentioned “the next reservation is waiting to be seated in five minutes...’ I mean I’m literally paying the bill! What does she want me to do, go greet them and take their order!? We ate our meal in about 10 minutes and waited for about 45… So rude! Visited Kiln with friends for a birthday Table booked for 7pm Arrived promptly but had to wait 5-10 minutes for table which we thought was Ok We waited another 10 mins to have our order taken and even longer to order a bottle of wine When the food came one of the orders of Cod was exceedingly very small compared to the same dish another was having We complained and we would have to wait 15 mins for a new dish or accept it and they would deduct it from the bill We chose the latter However when attempting to order dessert we were informed the table was for 11/2 hours only! Never before mentioned when booking! We said that we were ,ate to sit down but the very nice waitress said it made no difference and we had to be off the table for 8.30 This brought our evening to an abrupt end and we felt very shortchanged indeed The service was not good but the waitress was very nice and apologetic and clearly she doesn’t make the rules I would not visit again though nor particularly recommend it

Despite booking a Saturday Night Dinner table in advance, we were told on entry that the restaurant required our table back within 1hr 20mins, which on the face of it was fine. However, our food was not fully delivered to our table until 50-60 minutes later. When we finished our mains around 1hr 10 mins into this timeframe, we were offered the dessert menu, before the waiter went away, then returned to re-iterate that they needed the table back, meaning we could not order and enjoy dessert. Overall staff were polite, but it felt like we were rushed to get through our meals, and out of the restaurant. This gave the strong impression that the restaurant prioritises "churn" over quality of food and customer experience.

…but that seems a long time ago now. After my last rather disappointing visit a little while ago, I thought I’d give it another go. Didn’t have a reservation but the friendly staff member 1 got me a table. It was the only table without a candle or light, pretty dark there, I thought they would bring me a candle once seated but that didn’t happen. Small details… The entire service brigade seemed exchanged, I do like a bit of continuity, in particular when they used to have excellent staff and front of house who even knew what my first drink would be and what cocktail I’d have after food. I always wondered why there was such a high turnover of excellent members of staff, they certainly are an asset to the business, it seems strange. I ordered lamb koftas which I had in the past, also some crushed potatoes. The wait for my £9 cocktail was rather long, after perhaps 30 minutes it was eventually presented by staff member 2. I then waited for the food. 1 hour 10 (!) for the two rather sad looking kebabs put in font of me by staff member 3. Potatoes were a no show, I waited another 5 minutes for them and decided not to let the kebabs get cold. The £11 kebabs were very dense and chewy, the pickles required a chisel and I am sure it said cauliflower on the menu but that was missing too. The kebabs from years ago were tender and succulent, pretty much the opposite of what I had now. It reminded me of the burrata that once was really good but then became uninspired and dull. Once finished, staff member 4 asked ‘can I take these?’, referring to the plate and cutlery, without asking if I liked it. I had enough and asked for the bill. The bill still had the potatoes on it so I asked for them to be taken off. While waiting for the amended bill, staff member 5 came with some potatoes. So they didn’t forget them as I had assumed. I said “sorry, these are about 20 minutes too late, I am already in the process of paying”. Also, the £5 potatoes didn’t look crushed, they just looked like boiled potatoes to me. There were occasional problems with Kiln in the past, once I had badly undercooked fish on two separate occasions, I even contacted the place via Messenger with a picture and the reply was “we won’t reply via social … you can ring us” which I thought was very inappropriate, it’s not ‘social’ and I used that from of contact because I didn’t want to write a bad review as I really liked Kiln, then. Based on the pic, I would have been petrified if that had been my restaurant and I didn’t even get a ‘sorry’. Anyway, I won’t go back, I used to wave the flag, now it’s chaotic, the food has gone downhill dramatically, I also find it too expensive for what it is and where it is and I think that the monstrosity of a new bar has ruined a lot of the old cosiness.

I used to love this place… …but that seems a long time ago now. Best food and atmosphere in Newcastle. Every dish is unique - of the kind you’ve never eaten before. Had no idea what half the options were, but you can trust the menu. Vegetarian dishes are fantastic. Thought each dish was our favourite until the next one arrived. Really intimate dining, perfect for couples. In the heart of Ouseburn too, so there are great pubs next door for before and afterwards. The working kiln is such a unique characteristic - the artist was working away the whole time we were in. This place is a gem. Unique dining experience, and brilliant value considering the craft involved. We had four dishes and drinks, for under £50. We paid the same at a cheapy Italian the night before. Can’t recommend highly enough.

4 of us ate here today and had a nightmare experience. Dirty cutlery, missing cutlery, Ignored by staff on multiple occasions, even when we had full eye contact and I had my hand in the air. One of our 4 meals turned up nearly 10 minutes after the other 3 meals and of the 4 2 were uneatable. Due to super high levels of spice. (Even when the party is used to spicy Arabic food after living in the middle East for years). the food was far too spicy to eat. We were only asked how the food was when the table was cleared. I told the server that 2 of the meals were inedible but we wanted to pay the bill and go. They wouldn't let us pay the bill until the chef was ready to come.e and talk to us about the food. At this point I finally had to demand the bill because I was going to leave and didn't want to have some chef come to my table and argue with me about the food or the 2 meals we left. Tables, chairs, cutlery etc looks like a cheap coffee shop. Most staff ere ignorant except for a couple of exceptions. Terrible food, small portions and over priced for what you get.

Food had gone downhill since last visit. Group of four ended up with a bit of a chaotic mismatch of dishes. Bread arrived 10 minutes after plates of far too wet and sloppy dips. Big chunks of raw garlic in the salad. An aubergine main...

We were introduced to this wonderful restaurant on a foodie walking tour today. We had sharing platters, including a wonderful cheese, home made hummus, red pepper dip, freshly made pittas and a delicious wine to wash it down. Very nice.

12th September, I went to the Kiln for a “Meetup” event. It was made all the more enjoyable by the kindness of its staff. Pablo and Mia made sure that I had my water and made sure the bottle was full. I enjoyed my beetroot...

Lovely atmosphere. Good sharing food. Really attentive staff (thanks Brandon). 6 dishes between the 2 of us was a bit too much but hard to choose.

We had an amazing meal at Kiln at the weekend. The staff were incredibly helpful with my partner's dietary requirements. He's dairy and gluten free, and the chef came and had a chat with him to see what would be best to order. His food came out on a separate plate as well to avoid any contamination. I loved it here and can't wait to visit again.

It's a modern industrial-designed restaurant. The menu is very simple, with only a few dishes, but a lot of vegan and dairy-free options. The food is good and affordable. The staff is ok. The best thing about this place is after dinner you can sign up for 45 mins free pottery experience and I signed up for next week. Hopefully, it goes well. If the pottery experience is better than the restaurant itself, I will come back to change the score. 【Additional review for the pottery experience: I really dislike their pottery experience. They basically don’t ask you what you want to do and just assign you to do sth they planed for you. They don’t care how you are doing, don’t offer you help and don’t show you the exact steps, and you won’t even know until the end you were just there to squish some clays instead of doing sth proper and take it to home with you!!! How do they expect the customers want to come back if you don’t even enjoy your first experience? This whole FREE POTTERY EXPERIENCE IS JUST A FALSE ADVERTISEMENT for the restaurant. I would rather go to better pottery place and pay for someone who is more patient and offering clear instructions rather than play clay for 45 mins and get nothing back at all. Pure disappointment.】

I'm changing my reviews from 5 to 1 star as the service was very humiliating! I went with my children in the morning for breakfast before her GCSE exam to calm her down but unfortunately totally the opposite happened. Order wasnt served and everyone order even people after us was served. I reminded her with my order she said i'll give it take away! Ok. I asked for disposable forks, she came throwing bunch of metal forks on my table! I went to say I need disposables she gave them to me very angry! I am the one who should be angry as we didn't get what we want! I was very sad and decided to go to speak to her after dropping children off to school. I told her that wasn't right and not accepted and we were very disappointed! The other girl came very rudely saying she got your point and now do you need a free drink! Is this the way to treat your mistakes! Not apologizing but giving free drinks! What a shame! We loved this place and was very convenient being next to school! But we have loads of other options now!

Brilliant all round but please get some marmalade to go with the toast. Jam for breakfast ugh! Otherwise a great experience.

My wife and I made a reservation here after hearing a lot of good reviews. It was early on a Saturday evening. Hibou Blanc is divided into two separate parts - the larger area being the bar, which was heaving, even at this early hour. The restaurant is a smaller area, a little apart from the clamour of the bar. The lighting in both parts is low but the tables in the restaurant have atmospheric downlighting and the whole place has a private club style to it, with comfortable seating at the tables and Chesterfield couches in the bar. The atmosphere is therefore pleasant but there is noise from the bar and lots of hubbub from the neighbouring tables. The service was excellent. Several staff attended our table and answered questions about the food and drinks. Empty plates were quickly replaced with full ones and the staff were quick to offer help. Max was mostly at our table and he was great. The food is on the pricey end of the spectrum and we had a little of a mixed bag, though mostly good. The dishes are all well presented. My mackerel arriving in an enjoyable sauce and a side of dough bread and my wife's venison terrine looking very appealing. Both dishes were nice. My main was the fish of the day - trout and this is where my only disappointment with Hibou Blanc lies. The portion of trout - not an expensive or rare fish was tiny and the potatoes seemed undercooked to me. Thankfully, my better half had splashed out and ordered the lobster which came with some chips, she shared with me. Her lobster did look and taste very nice though and ther was enough of a portion for her. Enough to pass on some delicious chips to me. She thought the lobster was nice too. The desserts were the most enjoyable course. Though I am not usually one to eat dessert, the dark chocolate mousse with cherries and cream was delicious. My wife ordered the Almond Financier - which to our surprise and relief had nothing to do with spreadsheets or large financial operations. Both were very enjoyable.. One other thing that was great was the cocktails. We had 'Old Fashioned's - a very tasty blend of orange and Maker's Mark bourbon. Possibly the best version of this, I have ever had. It was slightly cheaper and tastier than the one I had just enjoyed at Mother Mercy's, which we had been to previous to this. We had a caraffe of Sauvignon Blanc and the final bill added to around £75 each with an automatically added service gratuity.

Friendly staff and nice decor, but cocktails are a bit left field!
