Quite a small pub inside and I should imagine in the summer it's packed in the garden. Even in the winter you can see it is popular with cyclist and ramblers. The ham and picallili sandwich was excellent, and the club sandwich is a monster. The skin on chips were salted to perfection. Another place I'll have to go back to and explore more of the menu.

One of the nicest pub meals we’ve had in a long time! Five of us, including two diabetics (both different types) and an autistic person, and they couldn’t have looked after us better. The food was delicious; we had soup, tiny pork belly bites as a starter, larger pork belly as a main, southern fried tempura chicken strips (so good she had seconds!), a burger, fish and chips, and a selection of desserts, and we all came away saying we would be back. Dog friendly too, with a choice of their own fish and chips or roast dinner 🤣 Staff were all lovely, and so helpful with our various requirements, we were never once made to feel we were being an inconvenience, only that they wanted to know how best to help or accommodate us, which really helped make the whole meal a truly enjoyable experience. Thank you!!

I ordered the ravioli,it arrived on a cold plate and lukewarm. It was a main course but was totally inadequate,it was more like a generous starter. Alot of money for not alot! My husband had the Sunday roast chicken,he was underwhelmed ,the roast potatoes weren't crisp and the rest was over all bland. As I was hungry due to the main being so small I ordered a pudding (Baked Alaska ) . I wish I hadn't bothered !! I sent it back untouched it wasn't Baked Alaska at all. My husbands desert was cake .....a very small piece of cake !! Two friends joined us for coffee .They ordered flat whites, it was barely better than instant ,definitely not a flat white.

If I could rate lower I would, the calamari was like chewing rubber bands, we didn't finish it, the schnitzel was undercooked and the chicken still pink, we didn't finish that either! We were told we could have asked for the food to be cooked longer, but no one did a checkback to see how everything was until the plates were collected, service was appalling, there was no one else in the restaurant...we felt intimidated by Jo, she wasn't helpful, she was quite rude and aggressive in the way she spoke to us, she didn't even tell us if she'd spoken to the chef or what was said. No compensation, nothing to make up for the terrible food, not even money off the bill! Absolutely disappointing and I work in the hospitality industry! We will not be returning!

We stopped at The Squirrel after a walk in Penn woods. This is a lovely characterful country pub that has a very friendly atmosphere and was busy with local couples and families. It has a good varied menu and I can definitely recommend our lunch of the 4 starters for £25 deal, followed by whole baked brie with dipping bread to share. There appears to be a nice garden with kids play area. It is also very dog friendly. We will definitely be going back.

Yesterday we hosted my mum's 60th surprise party at The Squirrel and it was perfect in every way. There is a lovely garden room dedicated to events which had access to the pub garden, and it was sectioned off from the rest of the pub so there was no outside noise. The food was very reasonably priced and went down very well with our guests. Jo and her bar staff couldn't do enough to help (we weren't the most organised party planners!) and were very prompt at tidying up plates/glasses etc. I'm so glad I found this pub as it was exactly what I wanted. I will definitely be back with the family for a pub lunch very soon. Thanks Jo and team 😊

Enjoyed four of the small plates which were all delicious and generous portions …. more than enough for two of us and excellent value at £26. We had rather a long wait at the bar even though it was quiet. This wasn’t helped by someone who came to the bar after us being served before us as the girl serving hadn’t noticed. After almost leaving the land lady appeared and took our order. Our food arrived quickly although we did have to ask for one of our dishes as it didn’t arrive. Service was friendly but we were asked so many times by multiple staff members if they could clear our plates it almost made conversation difficult. We were clearly still eating and there was food on our plates. We wondered if the kitchen had run out of crockery? Overall would recommend and would probably return if in the area as the food was excellent and reasonably priced.

This seems like a good pub, although we only stopped for a quick drink. It was nice watching a cricket match in the village green across the road. My only gripe was getting a bit of pressure to order everything before we had decided what drinks we wanted so the lady could bash the order into the computer all at once. What’s that all about?

Went for lunch with friends. Beautiful location, friendly staff, interesting sounding menu. The best choice of the three was the ham egg and chips. Unfortunately that’s where the compliments end. I chose the frittata which sounded great but for £15 I expected more than a child’s portion. It came with a watercress salad without dressing and some chips. Tiny portion, overpriced and dull. My other friend fancied the wonderful sounding steak. It was £30. It was thin, anaemic, veiny and the sauce arrived when my friend was half way through it. It came with a roast tomato and a few chips. I know it’s Buckinghamshire but to charge that for that is just wrong. The location is great and staff good but that’s not a good enough reason to charge those prices and serve poor quality food.

It was our monthly Lotus and Caterham Seven car meet which also coincided with my 60th birthday. I had contacted Jo the landlady to say we would have family coming along too so that enough tables and chairs were reserved. We had the terrace area reserved for us which was perfect as the cars could be admired and views within sight and also gave us some shade for those that required it on such a hot day. Food was ordered and brought to our table promptly and as always, was delicious. Our family all commented on the food being so good and the friendliness of all the staff. Ordered the chicken burger, wasn't expecting anything fancy but it was tiny, bone dry and ultimately just really disappointing - really representative of the poor standards in the hospitality industry in the U.K. these days. It's not difficult to do a nice chicken burger, not expecting the world over here. It was meant to come with some coleslaw and it didn't, I was about to tell a member of staff but saw them bring out another portion for someone else with the coleslaw and it was an insultingly tiny pot of red cabbage so I didn't bother. It's not disgusting or anything like that, just bland and lazy. You are much much better off going for a drink but eating at home

We recently celebrated a family event and chose to have it at The Squirrel Pub in a semi private area and I must say it exceeded all our expectations. A big shout out to Jo who was incredibly helpful and went above and beyond to make sure we had a great time and was happy with everything. The food at The Squirrel was top-notch! Had a nice-enough birthday meal for two. The place was totally empty when we arrived at 7pm (on a Monday evening it's understandable) so not much atmosphere to speak of... Though interior is warm, comfortable, and inviting. The staff were very friendly and greeted us warmly, with a free glass of fizz for my partner. They treated us quite well, but missed the check-backs on our food (in spite of literally zero other customers to attend to), which might have given them a chance to put some issues right - as our main issue is that the menu is quite deceptive... Firstly there are a few dishes missing from the menu posted on their website (I was looking forward to a pie that didn't seem to exist). Secondly, and more importantly, the high prices and elaborate wording of their dishes hide the average quality of the cookery: My Korean chicken burger was very flat (literally just bun>patty>bun), painfully underseasoned, and lacked any spice beyond a very light smear of sriracha mayonnaise... Which, much like the "Asian slaw", was barely there. The fries were not bad though. My partner's trout (which smelled and looked a lot like salmon) looked very anaemic, as did the buttered vegetables. The garlic prawns were obviously cooked from frozen. There was no sear or colour on the food at all - everything was disappointingly limp and pale. The sautéed potatoes weren't bad. All in all, the food was edible, but lacked any passion or care in the ingredients, cookery, or plating. Feel sorry for this place because they were lovely people, but they need to improve the overall quality of their food if they want to keep charging those prices.

Second visit, first time for food. Firstly, I rarely leave reviews unless it's really exceptional. This was. Its welcoming atmosphere, lovely staff and gorgeous setting (beautiful countryside) is perfect. However the food... omg the Sunday lunch was just amazing. I genuinely mean this, from the crunchy veg, tasty chicken, perfect roasties, gravy... the list goes on. My dad had short rib and (believe me it takes a lot to impress him) was sublime. I forgot to take a pic of desserts... they were that good. We moved from the lovely snug dining room to the bar and was welcomed with another wonderful smile from the staff. Big shoutout to Jemima for lovely service and an even bigger shout out to Jo and Nathan, the landlords - I don't think I've been to such a friendly pub - it's clear they welcome their regulars and drop ins with equal sincerity. We will be back. Thank you

This little pub is in a pleasant, secluded location in the village of Penn Street, near High Wycombe. On-site parking is provided, and there was a warm welcome from friendly staff. However the dining experience wasn’t great. My fish and chips was bottom quartile - lukewarm chips, soggy batter, fish bland. The vegetarian suet pudding was also unexciting. So overall a disappointing lunch, despite the friendly reception. Do not recommend, and will not return.

The pub and setting is lovely, the menu for a gluten free veggie was absolutely non existent, and the kitchen were not happy to help, it was what was on the menu or nothing. Fair enough, but couldn’t even have a bowl of chips as they were not GF so the veg soup was the only option. First of all we were told it wasn’t GF then we were told it was, there was nothing else I could eat so we asked for a large portion of it and was happy to pay a supplement but that wasn’t possible, we were told we’d have to order 2 bowls of soup.! When our one portion of soup came it was delicious but the portion was so small it was very disappointing.! Landlady shouting at customers who moved chairs and tables around and asked them to put them back. staff didn’t seemed happy to be working or enjoying their jobs, maybe it was just a bad day and everyone was stressed and tired.!

Great pub with a massive garden, food is good quality and atmosphere is great. Accepts (slightly) muddy boots and dogs which is useful as it's opposite the cricket pitch and some woodlands. In the summer the garden is a real bonus with plenty of seating, a good climbing frame/playset for kids and cover as well. There is some parking onsite and there is some onstreet parking around although it gets busy as this is white a popular spot - but no worries if it's full try your luck at the Hit and Miss around the corner! Accessibility wise there are some steps inside, both to get to the 'restaurant' and to get to the loos. The carpark is gravelly and prone to puddles and there is limited pavement if you park on the road, which has some significant potholes.

We had a really enjoyable meal (2 excellent steaks), the steak pie had a nice filling - the hard pasty let it down. We enjoyed our desserts. All at a reasonable price. Sadly, we have missed The Squirrel off our list of pubs to visit - despite having lived in the Amersham area for many years! Visiting last week for dinner we were impressed by the cosy atmosphere, lovely log fires (most welcome on the frosty night we visited), great reception by staff. Our steaks were very good (perfectly cooked), the desserts enjoyed. The let down was the steak pie - filling fine but pastry rock hard - not sure what went wrong there! We rated the food at 4/5 due to the pie - otherwise it would have been a 5. Small, simple menu but very good country pub food. We have been again for a drink and booked for the Christmas period.

What a lovely traditional pub where the welcome was as warm as the cosy open fire. Three delicious lunches were thoroughly enjoyed and we would definitely recommend this as the best of British! Thank you.

From the moment we walked in, we knew we were going to have a lovely evening. Under new management, this pub offers a warm welcome to locals and visitors alike. Cosy chairs by the log fire, as well other comfy areas, make for an ideal place for food and drinks. The food is delicious. The menu is relatively small, but this allows for high quality, home cooked food, which is what a village pub should be about. The restaurant is small but perfectly sized for an intimate dinner for two or a larger group. The service is excellent, with staff wanting to ensure everything is as it should be. Four-legged guests are also made welcome by the staff who treat all customers as friends.

Well what a difference! Me and my friend thought we would stop and have a drink on Saturday after a nice walk in the woods and I am so glad we did. The pub has recently been taken over by Nathan and Jo - I know their names as they both took the time to come and introduce themselves. The pub was so busy and could feel a new buzz, it was fantastic to see as this is such a wonderful pub to go to after a walk. Tables were cleared quickly, service was great, staff really friendly. Just fantastic. We only had a couple of drinks but will definitely be back for some food soon.

We were put in the back room by the toilets and the whole room smelt (could only assume it was the toilets, unless it was a damp issue). We had to pre-order food as we were a large group. Ordered on Thursday, wanted the pork which they didn't have - surely they could have got some in? As it happens, I'm kind of glad they didn't. People that ordered pizzas had to watch everyone else eat first, as the pizza oven had not warmed up. Again, they knew since Thursday that we were coming! I had the prawn linguine. It looked like it had been sat on the side for a while as the pasta was all stuck together and dry. Pizzas eventually came and were very disappointing. My vegan friend had "The Alotment" - no vegan cheese on it surprisingly - so he got presented with a what he described as "cracker with veg on top". Toilets were disgusting. Ao dirty. No lock on the doors, and no bin so struggled to change my son when he needed a nappy change. Very very disappointing overall.

Disappointing returned for the first time since the refurb but struggled to see any evidence. The menu offered a reasonable choice but when it came to it very few dishes were available. Food was edible.

Currently touring around the pubs in the area having recently relocated, so pleased we stopped here for a wonderful lunch in the glorious garden (beautifully landscaped with well kept and modern furniture) enjoyingthe atmos and valley views. We both had local beer (Tring Brewery) and a most excellent steak and caramelised onion ciabatta for £6! The service was welcoming and efficient and the locals equally so. This is currently our second favourite pub in the area and we will definitely be returning for an evening session. I highly recommend this establishment and urge people to use their local pub - two others a stones throw away from here on neighbouring ridges have closed in recent years 😪😪😪.

Visited the Royal Standard of England recently. Such a nice pub with really decent food - the fish and chips were delicious. We received great service from the bar man Phil, who was not only very knowledgeable about the beers on offer, but also knew a lot about the history of the pub. It’s the oldest free house in England! Highly recommend a visit. Cosy atmosphere inside, and the garden looks like it’ll be amazing in the summer!
