Lovely lunch at our local pub. Asheridge fried chicken delicious, as was the haggis. Always service with a smile, in a relaxed and inviting atmosphere.

We have been several times in September and during lockdown used the take away service. Each time it has been fresh and well organised. The food and drink well priced and wholesome. One downside is the irascible resident four paws who can be a little snappy, to visiting 4 paws. But that won't stop us returning as often as possible.

Lovely evening . Very friendly staff. The fish and chips was the best option at £12. The scampi was good as was the gammon. I had the ribs which was more expensive at £14 and had a ‘just emptied out the packet and warmed up’ look about it . It tasted good - and the salad coleslaws and chips were great but the ribs needed to have seen a hot oven to get that bbq/burnt look to them. We would have bought a couple of extra drinks but were never approached by staff . The pub was clean, lots of covid precautions and a little old dog wandering around checking the floor for crumbs.I’ve been here before - and will definitely be back.

Visited with adult family on a Saturday evening. Covid secure with all staff wearing PPE. Prebooked table over the phone. Food brought quickly. Scampi gammon and cod all perfect with amazing salad. Ribs were very processed and not crisped up. Meals £12-14. Very generous portions and well presented. No problem parking. Recommend to anyone if you don't mind the country lanes.

A group of six came here for a Saturday evening meal. The pub was busy and bustling with people; it also appeared to be dog friendly. We ate in the restaurant, which was full but not cramped or on top of each other. Lighting was good, so you can easily read the menu!. Orders were taken at the bar. The menu is extensive, essentially “pub grub”, but the biggest surprise was the size of helpings- they are really big! All our meals were really well prepared and excellent value. The staff are very friendly, polite and keen to pleaseThere is a large car park at the rear of the pub.

It’s a good test of a small village pub if you bring a gang of 24 hungry, thirsty and grubby walkers for lunch. The Blue Ball passed with flying colours. They served drinks, took our money and served our meal without any fuss and very efficiently. The food was good quality and portions were more than generous. My ham, eggs and chips were excellent and the largest plateful I’ve seen for a long while. Quite apart from our group, the pub was busy on a wintry Monday lunchtime, so it must be popular with locals. They offer a good range of real ales and craft beers. There’s a big car park and a large beer garden for better weather.

We visited the Blue Ball on 30/12 as a group of four so that we could have some lunch. On arrival we was able to get a table straightaway (you cannot pre book a table unless there are at least six diners). We sat at a round table looking out over the pub garden. There is a good choice of "Pub" style meals on the menu. We chose three scampi and a cod. Once chosen one of us went to the bar and ordered the meals. It wasn't very long before the meals were brought to the table and were very hot and freshly prepared (no complaints there) The meals had very generous portions and included an excellent salad. After the main meal only one of us wanted a dessert. This was ordered at the table and was quickly brought to the table - this was also very nice. We followed the meal with coffee's.We only met two of the staff during our visit but both ladies were really lovely and friendly. The resident little dog was in the bar and is always a welcome attraction. Although the is getting older now it is a lovely friendly character. It has it place where it stays and is just lovely. It must love all the attention received. The cost was very reasonable for the quality of food and service and I would not hesitate to recommend. If I had one criticism it would be that the entrance to the large carpark has a lot of large and deep potholes at the entrance. They really must be repaired as soon as possible as it takes a lot of zig-zagging to avoid them !!

This is my dad's favourite pub to eat, so I've been quite a few times for big family birthdays etc. over the last few years, and the food is consistently good. Large portions, tasty and good value. A mix of local and national ales compliment the food, eg Tring Brewery's Side Pocket - an excellent session ale. There are plenty of outside tables for when the weather allows, and a decent sized car park. The decor is nothing spectacular, just normal pub not trendy gastropub - you come here for the food and drink.

Visited one week on a Friday and had a great meal. I had halloumi and my husband had the big grill. Waitress collected plates and offered us the desert menu and we ordered strawberries and cream. It was all very nice so when my cousin was over from Canada we took her and my sister and her partner there. Service was slow! The potato’s that came with my sea bass and my cousin and sister's meal were horrible, I’m pretty sure they were tinned/frozen/old! Also staff came and cleared plates, didn’t ask how it was not offered the desert menu. We asked someone for the desert menu and chose what we wanted. Then we waited and waited for staff to come and take the order. We couldn’t see any staff about for ages but as soon as someone appeared we said we wanted to order and the reply we got was 'You have to go and order at the bar!' Why? That didn’t happen last week? If that was so why didn’t they tell us when they gave us the desert menu?

Unpretentious, dog friendly, the Blue Ball has a lot going for it but top of the list must be the excellent pub grub at totally reasonable prices. My haggis, double fried egg and chips with a side salad was just £8.50, and my family had fish and chips and scampi for little more.On a perfect warm early summer evening, we were able to sit out and eat. We explained that the children where not staying for the meal but only for a quick drink to see their great Nan who's birthday we was celebrating. I respect their rules BUT this was never explained at the time of booking about the children & also the children where very quiet. After no more than 15 mins the male chef came out aggressively & spoke very loudly so the whole restaurant could hear the conversation & very rudely told us that the children had to go. The way this was done was unacceptable & very unprofessional this upset the whole party. We promptly all left to go to a more friendly restaurant.

We went to the blue ball with family for a Sunday lunch, having checked their website to make sure they were family friendly (I don't expect that children are welcome everywhere, some places lack the facilities or just choose to be a childless environment, which is absolutely fine). We arrive to find they have no high chairs so we had to put a one-year-old on a regular dining chair. Not ideal. We ask if there's a children's menu (you can tell which way this is going I'm sure...), no children's menu but we can do smaller portions of the regular dishes. We ask for spaghetti bolognaise minus the chilli sauce for a 6-year-old. No can't do that. Fish and chips? Nope, no small portions of fish... we systematically go through the menu til we find something that can be made small...Suffice to say with no high chairs, no children's menu, no changing facilities and a pub dog who gets aggressive with children (according to the owners) it's hard to see how exactly you can class yourself as "family friendly". You can't just use the term and make absolutely no provision for children! The staff seemed very stressed and put upon, a most uncomfortable Sunday lunch experience.

We came for 3 reasons; to have lunch, to check it out as a place to bring family visiting from abroad and to decide on its suitability as a meeting place for social occasions (I organise events). We had our dog with us on a lead and the barmaid confirmed we could bring her inside. I'd just collected the menus when the pub dog suddenly jumped down from a chair and attacked our dog. A male member of staff appeared, flung the pub dog behind the bar towards the kitchen area and started shouting at us. I told him our dog had been attacked. He shouted that the pub dog was just defending his territory. He showed no concern for us nor our dog. As we turned to leave, he became angrier, demanded that we stay and said our dog "shouldn't be such a wuss." His boorish behaviour has cost the pub a great deal of potential business from us. A dog that attacks without warning is dangerous and unpredictable. What if we'd had a small child with us? For this reason, and the male's unpleasant behaviour, I cannot recommend this pub to anyone. There are other pubs nearby where the food is good, the staff courteous and customers can enjoy a meal out in peace.

How very disappointing. We called into The Blue Ball when passing recently for a summer lunch. The place was fairly busy, but a bit dated. This can sometimes mean a good thing. However not this time. The lady behind the counter was surly and very matter of fact.Perhaps a bit tired and in need of a break.Whilst we do not expect someone to dance for us on arrival and smother us with kisses,we do expect to be treated like a customer spending money. We cheered ourselves up and ordered some food.Unfortunately, the food was poor, greasy roast potatoes, seemingly a frozen Yorkshire pudding, and the veg warm to cold and undercooked. We have since read that the food portions are large and the prices reasonable. However we would prefer the food portions to be smaller and of better quality ,even if that meant a slight increase in price. We appreciate that you are unable to please everyone all of the time, and in this case you did not.We could have complained, but we decided to just pay up and leave turning our back on the pub probably for the last time. Not the same standard pub as 20 years ago.

A full on day of fun rounded off with an excellent evening spent in the wonderful gardens at the Blue Ball our old stomping ground. Great food with large portions all washed down with lashings of well kept beer. The bar staff looked after us well until it was time to hit the trail once more back to our tents. Well done all.

Stumbled across this great pub whilst out for a drive. Great food and a lovely open back garden that kids would delight in! Will certainly return for a more substantial meal - this time we had sandwiches and chips and sat in the garden enjoying the all too brief sunshine. Lovely. If you are in the area and it's sunny it's definitely worth checking out.

My wife and I have been regulars for the past couple of years. We have always thought it was the best pub in the area for good value food, ambience and efficient, friendly service. Unfortunately, we will not be going again. I suffer from tinnitus and hearing loss which is gradually getting worse. I have increasing difficulty in filtering out background music in order to have a conversation. I tried explaining my problem to the landlady but she didn't understand, saying they she and her customers like it. We will not be eating there again which is a great shame as we have always liked the place.

This pub is just wonderful, warm greeting, good choice of drinks available and the food and service are fantasticBeen coming here for a very long time now and each time you come the service and food is lovely they have a specials board and menu with something for everyone. Puddings are if you want to be indulgent highly recommended.I can't fault anything except no children at all in the evenings. Dogs on leads are allowed too.Chef often pops out to check everything is ok and how he does this and keeps the food to such a good standard is beyond me but he does and it's such a lovely touch.Recommended for lovely summers evenings out on patio and any evening for a lovely meal in the pub.

Just what we needed Good value pub food. Not trying to be grand or gastro. Husband's mixed grill had lots of choice and my ribs were great. Wished I had chosen the fish and chips that arrived on neighbouring table as it looked lovely. Great friendly service

Can't say much more than my headline. Had a lovely Sunday lunch in the sun, quite idyllic. Nice roast, with decent but not crazy portions for £10.Ready delicious flat cider and a pint of directors too.

My local. Cosy pub with lovely staff. Good range of drinks on offer and the food is wonderful. Large plates of delicious, freshly cooked meals. Specials board, snacks and main meals on offer. Always lots of vegetables and salads too. This pub does not have piped music and fruit machines just lots of lovely chatter. Cosy tables inside and seating options outside. Even has a large glass shelter outside. Great stop off for the hardy rambler traversing our undulating countryside.

Good fresh food lovingly prepared. You won't get a Sunday roast or three course meal, but the snacks and light meals are first class. The only problem is that they have fallen victim to their own popularity, making it difficult at times to get a table straight away. However, it's worth the wait.

Thursday lunch after visiting local relatives. Food and service were top class. Well done! The pub dogs are just as friendly as the staff but not quite so helpful at serving the food.

Four of us visited the Blue Ball one evening recently, a first for me. Was surprised to be able to order haggis and chaps, unusual and excellent. Very friendly atmosphere in the pub, will go back next time we're in the vicinity.

A group of around 20 of us, who walk and then pub-lunch in the Chilterns every Wednesday, visited the Blue Ball today; we had told the pub to expect us, reserving tables, but did not need to pre-order our meals. When we arrived at 1.00 p.m., the pub was already full of customers lunching; it clearly enjoys a large and loyal clientele locally, despite not being in a central location. Everything about the meal was excellent: ordering was brisk and efficient, the food arrived pretty promptly, the small but very hard-working staff were cheerful and clearly extremely well organised. The food was great, with generous portions; I enjoyed one of the best steak and kidney pies, clearly home-made (and, for once, with plenty of kidney in it!), that I've ever eaten, chosen from the 'specials' menu; others had equally appealing-looking dishes such as haggis, egg and chips, and chunky fishcakes, also in good-sized portions. All in all, this was one of the best pub lunches our group has sampled recently; I'm already looking forward to our next visit to Asheridge.

I have been going to the Blue Ball for years and absolutely love it's charm and location! It is so nice to see a pub still serving hearty portions and that has a great atmosphere. If you are looking for somewhere where you won't go home hungry and that is quintessentially English this is the place!!

About 20 walkers arrived at The Blue Ball for lunch. We had told them we would be dining there but had not pre-ordered. The pub coped very well. The food arrived after only a short wait and all meals arrived one after the other. The menu is simple but with a nice little Specials Board. The quality is excellent, also the portion size - all very reasonably priced. Popular choices were the beef and Stilton pie, salmon and asparagus tart, pasta and a wide range of sandwiches. Highly recommended.

Met up with friends for Sunday lunch and took two dogs. If you do not like dogs in the dinning area then this pub is not for you. Generously portioned Sunday lunches and great crab salads. Also huge portion of steak & kidney pie. This was followed but a good selection of puddings including the most treacley treacle pudding! Service was friendly and attentive.

We had a lovely meal Saturday lunch time. Food was fresh and the quality good. Portions were generous which we appreciated after an 8 mile walk in this attractive area. Bar service and ordering were very efficient. We sat in the restaurant area. Lots of people were sitting in the garden taking advantage of the good weather but the pub seemed able to cope with the influx of people. Large car park. A few nice "specials" on a board.

Enjoyed a lovely lunch in the sun-blessed garden. When the weathers good there is no better place to be. The food was very good, it's the second time I've been here but I would say that the meals could be trimmed down a bit as I personally am a bit put off by such a big meal especially at lunchtime but this is purely a personal preference. Great service completes a very enjoyable experience.

Popped in on a Tuesday night for a quick dinner. When we arrived all of the tables in the restaurant area were full or reserved, but we found a table in the bar area. After getting our drinks (Lovely pint of Directors for me, lime and tonic for the lady) we sat down to peruse the menu: lots of choice, sensible solid stuff. At this point a coach drew up outside and a fleet of pensioners alighted and entered the pub, heading for the reserved tables. We quickly ordered before they had a chance to and within a few minutes we were presented with two generous platefuls. The food was delicious, my beef burger was large and tasty and the chips it came with were excellent, big and crispy just like chips should be. Sadly neither of us had room for pudding. Highly recommended.

An evening catch up with my friend at my favourite pub in the area. This is not my first visit, coming regularly with my husband, and my mother. Great in the evening, fantastic for Sunday lunch, and we love that our dog is welcome too. The welcome is warm and the service good. My personal favourites - roast beef, ribs, and fish and chips (not all at once!!!). Never have room for a pud as the portions are so generous. Really love this place.
