Lovely selection of beers in this independently owned pub. Didn't eat on this occasion but have in the past and enjoyed the meals.

Cosy pub. Very good staff and service. Traditional ales and selection of craft beers. Food is tasty, especially the pies. Outside area tidy with plenty of seating.

What a great pub! We booked an Easter family meal here which was so welcome after a soggier than planned walk round the Chess valley. The food quality was very high with some sensational starters and there were choices available for the vegan / gluten free amongst us. Nice touches like the thyme water and the seasonal leek and pea greens were appreciated as was the friendly welcome. Thank you. We will be back

A simply fantastic pub. Visited on a Friday night with some friends and we were delighted to have booked on a ‘Candle Light Night’ evening. The atmosphere was intimate and special. The staff were all very welcoming and friendly, and the food was absolute delicious. We had the steaks which were very generously portioned, and cooked to perfection. I recommend the Cote de Boeuf for two! The sticky toffee pudding for afters is a must, too. We will definitely be back when we’re next in the area. Just wishing it was our local now!

We had such a great experience at the pub! All the food was amazing, fresh and delicious, and we were very impressed there were plenty of vegan options. Atmosphere was great and the staff friendly and attentive. We will come again!

A charming pub.Literally one of the best burgers I've ever had. The staff were super welcoming, loved the atmosphere and had to have the sticky toffee pudding which was mouth watering! Definitely we'll be going back! Also a bonus a great playlist! Thank you!

Second time back, food was good. Staff were friendly, however I watched the barman sneeze into his hand and didn't wash it. If I told my wife that she wouldn't have eaten there

16 of us had dinner last night, food was great, service spot on and great selection of beers - thank you. My advice would be to ignore Edna1234's (or Chris as we know them as locally!!) review above, he/she/they have a habit of leaving unjustified, negative and vindictive reviews of small local pubs and restaurants (see their historic reviews), disappointing in such a small community at a time when small businesses, especially in a rural setting, need as much support as possible. Well done team Red Lion - keep up the good work!

Lovely pub - food was fantastic, service was great, dog- and child-friendly. I arrived straight from the airport with an enormous heavy suitcase in tow and they very kindly stored it upstairs for me while we ate. Will come back here for sure.

Got to be the rudest pub in bucks landlady feels it’s a better idea to light candles than serve people meeting 9 people before going for a Indian ,left went to the Bedford arms Chenies where we were welcomed and served immediately, I’m telling you this as a local if you want service don’t bother going near the place , walk the extra 200 metres and get the service in this day and age you deserve Dan the owner should take note and do something about the Rude attitude of this place

Charming outdoor space. Pity it won't be permanent. Good varied menu with great food. Can't wait to return. Indoor dining is open and this is like a lovely rabbit warren with lots of cosy separate areas. Dog friendly too. Very impressed.

Had lovely meal on new year's day. Great little pub, service was excellent and food was a good mix of pub classics and more unusual options. Unfortunately one of the meals was not to our liking but the waiter immediately apologised and offered to replace it with something else on the menu. Ultimately, they took it off the bill - these things happen and you can't say fairer than that! Dropped one star for atmosphere just because there was a yappy dog next to us which was pretty annoying but that's hardly the pub management's fault. Also, it is a country pub after all.... Will definitely go back!

What a treat to return here after many years. Lovely relaxed/welcoming atmosphere (candles etc), very friendly staff & delicious food - friend had the yummy pie & I had steak. They also accommodated specific requests. Will definitely return - maybe to quiz night.

Disappointing Sunday lunch. Our table was for 2pm and we arrived on time only to be told that they were out of the vegetarian nut roast! A shame because the pub was lovey and the rest of the food was good.

A great experience. Never been here before but thought we would give Sunday lunch a try. The best pub experience we have had locally in a long while. Warm welcome, good beer, great value food of a high quality. Portions large. Service prompt and with a smile and everything obviously felt cooked to order. Very popular so book ahead. Even took the dog who loved it too! Highly recommended.

Lovely pub, lots of character, nice seating to differentiate between pub and more dining style. Friendly service and my biggest A* for being Dog friendly. I ordered the chicken wings with blue cheese sauce, pork croquettes which were stunning and the Ribs with Mash instead of fries. I can concur that the mash was *actually* made from potatoes and not a powder form like most pubs these days do - so THANK YOU chefs for going out of your way to do this. Brilliant ribs lovely flavours and in all honesty that plum coleslaw could be easily served as a main dish alongside some protein! Really lovely. Sausage and mash brilliant also! Cannot fault. Thanks

Classic beautiful pub with outdoor seating, serving lovely food and a good beer selection.

Staff were friendly. Two of us ordered sea trout. One of the sea trout dishes came with a whole piece of fish. The second one came with the fish cut into small pieces because they were the tails of lots of left over fillets it looked disgusting and so I sent it back and ordered something else. I was very disappointed. I was not charged for my main course but no apology from the chef. I had cheese cake for dessert which was also very poor and a small portion. Definitely will not be going there again.

Great local, good food and fair value, beer kept really well

An absolutely perfect pub. Stopped off with the dog in the middle of a big, muddy walk around the surrounding countryside for lunch and a refreshing beverage and was treated to one of the best pies I've possibly ever had in a perfectly relaxing, charming setting. With the fireplace going and the nice staff chatting I could have stayed for the whole afternoon into the evening. Will definitely make a point of going back on the next walk.

Really disapointed as it looked great from the outside. Blackpudding scotch egg as a starter that was just plain bland and very little black pudding in it. Squid starter that was served with a very strange chilli oil that really didn't work well at all. Some garlic mayo or similar would have been fine. Mains of roast Beef and a Pork belly were really disappointing, over cooked veg and soft bland unseasoned roast potatoes were made worse by the thin watery gravy. Totally underwhelming for the price, only redeeming thing was the positive and friendly staff, shame the food didn't match.

It was a lovely crisp day and the pub came recommended. A cosy Sunday lunch was what we needed so we chose the Red Lion. Members of staff were great, but the Sunday lunch was disappointing. The beef (£20) was very thin and the gravy really watery. The veg looked a bit like it was the last of the day (it was a 2:15pm booking). I’m getting a bit tired of eating out and not getting “value”. How hard can it be to nail a roast and make me think I’d be happy to pay £25? Thick gravy/jus, hot veg, and crispy, large roasties. Hmmmm. Instead, I think it was only worth £15. One of us had the burger which seemed good. The desserts were okay. Cheesecake a bit small. Unlikely to return.

The restaurant had excellent food and a friendly staff, but the experience was ruined by the rude and unwelcoming landlady.

Brilliant pub lunch during to keep us going on our Chilterns walk. The service was so friendly and quick even though it was a really busy day. Fish and chips and burger were really delicious, definitely cooked by professionals. Can’t recommend enough!

Great pub for food and drinks! Good variety of beers and wines as well and nice quality food options for all dietary requirements. We had a particularly friendly waitress.

Nicole and Julia - the friendly bar staff - are good company, the setting (inside and out) is fabulous, the beer is fresh and varied, and the menu is well-curated with something tasty for everyone. Great stuff.

Food was quite good with a reasonable variety of dishes……the atmosphere was quite jolly with the staff interacting well with guests….. there are limited areas around the small bar but it seemed quite busy

Really nice pub with very nice foods too. Good selection of beers and cider. If you're on a walk in the area this is a great place to stop halfway through. Highly recommended.

Relaxing place to chill out, have some grub & a bevvy

The ambience both inside and out is quaint; food fab; and service great! This is my second visit on a Sunday for the roast and was not disappointed!

Just left what would of been a wonderful evening apart from Kerry who really shouldn’t be in the job as she finds it difficult to be civil with people. Couldn’t fault the general staff however the manager shouldn’t be in the job. Clearly needs more training.

My partner and I went for a bike ride and found this pub to have a light lunch. Lovely pub and beautiful flowers. Food was delicious, we had 5 small plates between us and each one of them was tasty. We will definitely be back to try more of the menu.

A very friendly pub with great a atmosphere and surroundings. One could want very little else.

Nice setting. Torn between 2 & 3 stars. We asked for shandy (usually lager and lemonade) but they served us what I guess was lager + carbonated water? Healthier I guess but wasn't a fan of the taste. Also got the roast dinner with chicken, the meal tasted good, but the middle of the chicken was undercooked and blood oozed out when pressed with a fork. They did take one of the 'shandies' off the bill due to that.

I came with three friends. We all enjoyed our food . A simpler sandwich menu might have been good . Staff were really friendly and welcoming - lovely atmosphere.

Nice and cosy place the food just delicious. We had a long walk at the beautiful countryside and had simple and delicious burgers, the kids and the parentes loved it.

Perfect place for a pit stop. Top notch beer. Mother loved her fish and chip's (it did look good) i really enjoyed the burger and the dog woofed down her biscuits 😆 Friendly willing staff that go that extra mile. All reasonable priced. I've been twice now and recommend

For one reason or another, we haven't been here in forever but it's nice to see it's back on top form. The food was all really tasty and the ale we had was in very good condition. Best of all was the warm welcome and rooms full of happy diners.

My family wanted to meet up for Sunday lunch when visiting us so booked the Red Lion as we always love it there. From booking until the end, it was absolutely brilliant. Customer service was amazing and very patient with a big group of us! Excellent food as usual, couldn't fault it at all!! Will be back soon!

Great place for a nibble mid walk

Amazing service. Really delicious food! White bait, buffalo wings, vegan feta salad and lean soup was incredible! They even have a pork scratching machine. I Would highly recommend if you’re on the chess valley walk or just in the area Xxxx

It is a nice pub we was a group of 7 had roast dinner and kids meals was tasty even gave me some extra pork with mine witch was a nice touch really enjoyed . The salt and pepper squid was banging we be heading back again

Re visiting after a few years and a number of changes of ownership. The food was good (Sunday Roast) and have had far worse elsewhere. Lovely cheesecake for dessert too which was clearly home made 👏 The menu was somewhat limited, especially desserts but the chosen SB wine fabulous. Can’t say the welcome was particularly warm but the staff were generally very helpful and attentive. Would definitely recommend and return but probably not for a quiet meal with a large tv the first thing you see (and hear) on arrival. Limited parking too other than on road but then we walked so not a problem. I would guess this is a very well supported local pub and restaurant within the village.

Really nice food. I had prawn skewers with caesar salad which was delicious. My wife had Vege Burger, and the grown up kids, Sea Bream with Rice, and a burger. Nice courtyard outside to sit and eat.

Lovely little pub in all ways. Like others we stopped here at a mid point of our walk for a pint, and I was so pleasantly surprised to see a good selection of local beers and ciders on draught. We usually only have one pint when on a walk but it was so good here we stayed for two! The pub is very cosy inside and out, and the staff were super friendly and welcoming as well. We didn't have food but what came out for other customers looked great. I also learnt that "Autarkic" (on the pub sign) is a word. Oh, and it had a PORK SCRATCHING DISPENSER?!?! WOWWW. Full of cute surprises I suppose.. 😁

Went for a lunch on my own. Stood at the bar for at least 5 minutes, no-one came out to serve. I left and had a nice lunch at The Bedford Arms down the road. I won’t be going back.

A beautiful local, country pub, the staff were absolutely delightful and extraordinarily friendly. My partner & I really enjoyed the atmosphere here and loved all the board games 😁. The food was just delicious, 100% would come back.

Just had a great pub lunch at the Red Lion. Every part of the three meals in my group was great. Every detail spot on. This doesn’t happen by accident, whoever is running the kitchen is doing a fantastic job.

What a place loved every minute of it. The staff was super amazing, helpful and put the customer first. We ordered the Sunday roast that was cooked to perfection. The dessert was incredible and highly recommended the sticky toffee pudding.

I took my elderly Mum and I sing Aunt for Sunday lunch on a very warm day. We would normally have opted for the roast dinner but it was too hot. We plumped for more Summery dishes, I had the Caesar salad with prawn skewers...

We had a vegan burger with amazing chips, and sourdough with mushrooms and labneh. Topped off with good coffee. We will return

At last a real pub! well run, excellent food, especially Sunday lunch, good beer, ale and wine. Friendly and well, just fab. It's a shame other pubs in the area don't step up, either ghastly chains with processed, below average, micowave food, or rundown decrepit and soulless. The Red Lion was heaving on Sunday - which shows there is demand if done well

Six of us had lunch here today. Food was lovely and the service was excellent! I had the Ham Chop, which was a good size and beautifully tender. We will definitely be meeting up there again very soon!
