The Sunday lunch menu is very limited with a choice of 3 different Sunday roasts, Fish n Chips, and a Veg option. That's it. We were then very disappointed to find out that they had run out of fish n chips. Crazy when the menu is already so limited. We weren't happy when the TV was put on for the football when we were hoping for a cosy family dinner. The final disappointment was that a 10% service charge was automatically added. We removed this and tipped our lovely waitress with cash. So many easy improvements could be made to have a massive improvement if the owners would listen to feedback.

A really lovely place to eat and drink. The food standard is very high and presented well. Good gluten free options. Melissa served our table and was very attentive and helpful as were the other staff too. We will definitely be back! 😊

The actions of the duty Manager Tom rescued our Sunday meal trip to the site. Dreadful service to start with, until we called for the Duty Manager, after which everything went smoothly. Better organisation of staff needed. Food is presented well.

Nice atmosphere. Tasty vegetable soup and just a pot of tea. Staff were very pleasant 😊

Superb Sunday lunch. Not often as one of those awkward vegans are you as well catered for as here. Stunning food and the service was sublime - especially our server Becky. Fantastic. 100% recommend.

Lovely welcoming staff and also very accommodating of my little known allergy. One side dish contained an addition which was specifically requested not to be added. Waffle with salted caramel and ice cream to die for! Overall a delicious Sunday lunch, we will certainly return soon.

Great Food & Amazing Service from Melissa! Had a fantastic time at Square and Compass! The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. A special shoutout to Melissa, who was super friendly, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed. Her service really made the experience even better. Definitely recommend!

Came for our traditional Valentines Day Dinner. Always welcomed with such great service from all the staff. Especially Daruta in front of house. Seated quickly , food out promptly, 10/10 taste and quality and great presentation! Thanks especially to Jonny in the kitchen! Will be returning! Fantastic

We are from London and I’ve got to say it’s probably the best or one of the best Sunday Roasts I’ve ever had with my family , I’m 78 so I’ve had a few. Wonderful 1000% service and food amazing amazing amazing

On a cold wet Sunday I was delighted to have such a wonderful Roast for lunch. The pub was warm and inviting, the staff were friendly and efficient and the food was delicious. I had Roast Pork which was cooked to perfection with tender moist meat and crispy crackling. The vegetables were perfectly cooked and the variety of roasted, steamed and puréed gave different textures. My husband had Roast Beef which went down as well as the pork. The pub was full and had a lovely atmosphere. All in all a great experience.

Called in for lunch on a long walk. Delicious Cullen skink and really hospitable service and a proper cosy pub. Will be back!

Revisiting from a few years ago but sadly gone downhill. Preordered for a large group with seating plan, sadly some steaks were incorrectly cooked, staff were just calling out orders with no clue who or which table each meal was intended for. My chips came after I’d finished my main, I couldn’t have waited as it would have been cold. No salad of any description with the kids burger. A steak is served with a token strand of water cress, no veg, onion rings, mushrooms. All probably available as extras but considering the cost of a poor cut to begin with…….very costly for the quality of food and service. For private dining you’d expect an elevated level of service and certainly, as a service charge is automatically added. This can and was deducted upon request. One last note to point out, the pub is dog friendly as there were dogs happily sitting on the furniture, however if you do book the private dining area dogs are not allowed in case they damage the carpet. Judging by the state of the chairs the carpet is the least of the concerns. When you start to look there is a lot that is tired and grubby throughout. Finally some but not all of the staff were very polite and helpful, it’s just a shame the overall management of the facility has slipped.

The food was ok, but being disabled I found the restaurant difficult to negotiate. Our table was very sticky. Something had obviously been split and not cleaned up properly. We asked a waitress to clean again but it wasn't much better afterwards. Parking is clearly an issue with this establishment.

We booked for 9 and a dog on Boxing Day for a three course meal. On arrival there were some issues with our booking due to miscommunication about the dog and our table being booked in the restaurant. Nevertheless, despite a heaving restaurant and bar area the manager and all the stuff worked extremely hard to fit us in. They rearranged the room, tables, chairs and were very apologetic about the issues even though it was not their fault. All the waiters and waitresses were lovely and very attentive regularly checking we were okay for drinks and having a good time. The food was delicious and each course arrived within perfect intervals making sure we weren’t rushed but weren’t waiting too long. We had such a lovely time and cannot recommend this place enough. Thankyou to all the hardworking staff on a very busy Boxing Day.

Always a fantastic experience in this local village pub. Top atmosphere, fantastic service, and 10/10 food. I have frequented many pubs across the UK and safe to say this remains number 1.

We have always loved the square and compass, and had many fantastic meals. Unfortunately our visit with family on Sunday left us very disappointed. 2 of our meals were poor and the others fairly average. The staff were good, and knocked off the cost of the 2 poor meals without any quibbling, but questioned why we felt the fish was off (it didn’t taste right). Unfortunately something seems to have changed with the quality of food, so we will be taking a pause before returning. I hope to be returning in the not too distant future when things are once again fabulous.

Pop in for a drink, nice spot pub friendly and inviting. Staff helpful, drink tad pricey. Disappointed to find a service charge on drinks bill, when we went to bar ourselves. What would they charge if you had food ? Top tip check your bill before paying. Not sure will return.

We visited for the first time today to take my mum out for Christmas lunch. I will say, the food was excellent and the staff lovely. But the service was very slow. We were there for two hours, ordered very quickly, but still didn't have time for desserts or coffee at the end. Tables around us were receiving their mains before us (having ordered after us) and it was a good 45mins between starter being cleared and mains being served. Having also ordered the double prawn cocktail we also raised with the person who served us the lack of avocado in it (our interpretation is that the "double" bit referred to the avocado listed in the menu), but no one got back to us. Overall, our enjoyment of the food and the feel of the place makes it worth a return visit, but it is a shame that it was a bit marred by having to cut the meal short - 2 hours should be plenty of time for three courses.

So, the Square n Compass is our local. We always receive a warm welcome especially from Rachel..Melissa and James who seem to run the show. Had Sunday lunch it is our favourite place to have Sunday lunch. Personally i prefer my gravy on the side but always forget to ask. Monty our dog always happy to meet other pooches.

Five stars for the fabulous festive @squareandcompasshg in North Rigton🎄🍴🍷 We had such a wonderful Christmas style lunch on Sunday with my lovely inlaws. The staff were super friendly and attentive. The food was absolutely delicious, the veg was beautiful - such tasty carrots and parsnips! My yummy nut roast was hidden on the photo from the amazing Yorkshire pud! We thought we didn't have room for pudding but couldn't resist the gorgeous selection! All washed down with fabulous merlot. We look forward to visiting again and taking friends and family to experience your special place ✨

Service was good and food nice but the size of my main dish "Stone Bass" was small ! Was more like a starter!! at £20 I would have thought I would have had a bigger size, the fish was the size of my thumb and a half, I had 3 slices of courgettes and 7 gnocchi pieces !! Was still hungry so had to order a dessert and a coffee ! Won't be rushing back, which is shame as we had our Christmas meet up there last year and it was good.

10 of us for an Early Christmas family get together. We were looked after very well by the attentive staff. Sophie took our order and kept an eye on our table. Great atmosphere and good quality food. We will definitely return

Had a pre-Christmas Sunday roast with friends. I had the 'Festive Feast' which was excellent quality. 'Sophie' was our main waitress and was extremely efficient and pleasant.

I recently visited the Square and Compass pub with my 91-year-old mother, and I cannot recommend it highly enough! From the moment we arrived, the staff, particularly Rachel and Mellisa, were absolutely brilliant. They went above and beyond to make my mother feel like a queen, which meant so much to us. The food was simply outstanding – beautifully prepared and full of flavor. Every dish we ordered exceeded our expectations, and the portions were just right. The warm and welcoming atmosphere, coupled with the exceptional service, made for a truly memorable experience. If you're looking for a place that combines fantastic food with genuine hospitality, the Square and Compass is the place to go. We will definitely be back!

Food excellent - the Sunday lunch was just as filling and tasty in both roast pork AND Vegan versions , which is a refreshing change ( often the vegan option in restaurants is 2 feeble sticks of celery and a potato, or something , at same price as a proper meal - but not here 😁. ) Also a big THANK YOU to our server , Sophie. Despite it being very busy , she was attentive, helpful with descriptions, and fun to chat to ( though how she acquired that accent in Bramley I'll never know ) - a credit to the place ! Lovely Saturday afternoon lunch out!!.. really nice festive menu available and the festive burger was spot on. Husband had the Brussels sprout pizza.. conteiversal but he said it was nice and there was a lot of sorreno ham on it!. They have an interesting festive cocktails available which is definitely worth a look !!...mulled wine margarita was a game changer!!. Thanks to Luke for making it and massive thanks to Melissa for the her great smile , customer service and helping find all of the necessary ingredients to make the mulled wine at home !!!

Went to Yorkshire show today , party of 4 , and called for a meal . Food absolutely delicious, perfectly cooked . Had prawn starter and haddock and chips . Wow amazing . The staff Bonuta, Mellissa and Ben were lovely, friendly , attentive very pleasant .They are a credit to Square and Compass. We will be calling again , and also recommend the place . to our friends and family . Miriam Darlow

Fantastic family Sunday roast at this charming village pub. The food is brilliant - generous portions cooked to perfection. We often attend as a large group of family and friends - 5 adults and 5 children. The staff are always attentive and genuinely friendly, making everyone feel welcome. Service is always prompt even when a large group. The pub itself is a cosy gem, and they've created such a lovely Christmas atmosphere. It's exactly what you want from a village pub - great food, warm service, and that perfect festive feeling. A proper 5/5 - couldn't ask for better!"

Excellent Sunday family lunch...great friendly welcome from staff at entrance and Manager pouring me my pint at the bar...leading from the front in one of the busiest lunch service I've seen for ages. As a retired Group Area Manager with THF in the 80s90s I have great respect for how hard your team here 'graft' in a well knit team. I had horrible journey to visit my daughter from Scarborough who had moved to new flat in Yeadon on A64 at Crambeck. You've something special with your 'set up' here so hope your appreciated by your company. I've terminal illness so hopefully look forward to a return visit. My family enjoyed the walk nearby I enjoyed chilling in the comfortable garden area and watch the only issue that could stress you ...impatient car owners parking...without skills . Food pretty decent too ! Well done the hidden kitchen team. Competitive realistic pricing ...adds to the experience. Cheers everyone 👍

We’ve visited the pub regularly over the past few years and taken lots of friends there for Sunday lunch. The food has always been excellent, if a little expensive. However our experience this weekend wasn’t great. The service was quite slow, the prices have increased, and our friends were charged £4.50 for a lime and soda. We thought a mistake had been made on the bill but when we queried it we were told this was the correct price. We don’t mind paying £5.50 for a pint of beer but for cordial and water £4.50 is utterly ridiculous, especially when we were paying £24 each for a roast dinner. We mentioned it to the managers but they weren’t particularly apologetic. I doubt we’ll be returning again.

First ever visit which was for Sunday lunch. We were expecting great things having read the reviews beforehand. Disappointing overall. Totally agree with the comment about roast potatoes being very hard to cut into. Extra veg of cauliflower cheese, red cabbage & parsnips were all excellent & nice & hot. Main plate was much more mixed quality & quite cool in parts. Don't know if the service charge is mentioned on the menu but if it is we missed it. So were somewhat ambushed by it when the bill came. The waitress only mentioned it when we were discussing a tip as we had only checked the correct items were down & still not picked up on the service charge. Didn't realise that the service charge was also added to already inflated drinks prices until later. J2O'S £4.40 from £4 & Moretti £6.93 from £6.30 seems out of order to us. Can't see that we will be rushing back anytime soon.

Beautifully kept establishment, very clean & modern. Really pleasant place to eat with a good selection of dishes available. Plenty of staff around, and very pleasant too,they actually made us feel welcomed. The food is outstanding in quality & presentation. All served in a spacious dining area. During our visit the weather was a tad cool which was a shame because the outside seating area looked amazing. Plenty of car parking to the side & rear of the building. Don’t hesitate to pop in as it’s quite busy over lunchtime. I highly recommend it.

My Birthday meal with family. A expensive, place to eat, Staff were helpful & polite. Food was tasty & hot a little to sparse on the veg & stuffing though.

Although we were greeted by a very friendly member of staff, the meal was very disappointing. The roast potatoes were in edible as they were so hard the knife could not cut through them. The Yorkshire puddings were also a little tough which was disappointing as the rest of the meal was perfectly acceptable. Upon complaining we were given some mash potato as we were told all the roast potatoes were too hard yet they continued to serve them to other people. Also when we mentioned it upon paying we were told sorry we will try to do better no offer of recompense and basically you’ll be becoming a nuisance

Visited this place on Sunday September 22 on the way to LBA airport with friends I was visiting. This is a fantastic place, great ambience and sumptuous meals. I took traditional Fish and Chips , which was great! Keep it up and will be back

I do frequent this place more often than I should. A comfortable place to be, with lovely food, professional staff and has a selection of real ales! I just wanted to pay Kudos to a staff member when a buddy and I pop in for a beer every week, usually quite late on a Thursday evening. 9/10 we’re greeted by Mellissa who gives us a Paddington stare and could if she so desired snap our necks like twigs, but she always makes us feel welcome with a smile and friendly chat. And then kicks us out! Well-done Mellissa, you’re a star, credit to S&C!

I went here on a Tuesday evening with a friend and it’s a lovely pub in a nice remote location. It was quiet as there is plenty of space indoors and outside. The staff are very friendly and there is also a car park.

Its been a very long time since i was in the Square and Compass. Faced with a quick decision on where to go out for a meal i thought "why not" and booked. Upon arriving i was taken with the modern style using old world charm, very modern but dressed with age, really good. Well done to whoever put that together! There are break out areas, main more communal sections and a wonderful table booth that looks like it could seat ten people but have you in your own little world for the evening - makes me wish i had ten friends :) The two of us got seated over on he right hand side in a cosy little corner with soft seats and window view. Service was fast and so well spoken and polite, Chicken skewer / crevette starters were followed by plaice with smashed potatoes / "the burger". Starters were both top notch, cooked and presented perfectly. The plaice was stunning and caught just right, the smashed potatoes were the star of the show for my partner. I eat a lot of gourmet burgers and this one was one of the best I have had. Everything is £-£5 more than you might expect to see on most menus for a place like this but worth every penny. If you're paying a little more you need it to be better. And it was.

After having poor experience at Fodder We drove down the road to here and so glad we did. Fantastic setting. Loads of outdoor seating and beautiful indoor too. Obviously been a very busy day for them. Lots of family parties leaving as we arrived and lots indoor too. Got seated very quickly after lovely greeting and good banter with the gentleman on the door. I’m gluten free and always struggle to get a complete gf Sunday lunch. Not here, Nothing substituted out just replaced with gf option, including Yorkshire pudding. A little dense but a good effort. I had the pink roast beef (comes as you prefer it) and my partner had the pork & crackling. Both very happy with what we got. I had the Dur-Ram gf beer v nice. Service, even tho the pub was very busy was quick and the staff checked all was okay and very attentive. Food was superb. Great flavours Partner added the pigs in blankets as a side. I had some extra veg. Side note. You can request extra gravy & extra roast potatoes at no extra charge. Partner had Sticky toffee pudding and ice cream for dessert. Going on the smoke and clean plate. One very happy lady. Cannot fault the meal and the staff are superb. Super meal with our grandsons on Sunday.Great service and really lovely food. We had 2 pies of the day and 2 roasts. All generally scrumptious. James the manager and his staff, are excellent.Shannon our main waitress was super. Very helpful and very efficient. We will always go here for family meals out and celebrations as it can’t be beaten for quality and service.

We had been told the Sunday lunch was great and it did not disappoint. Lovely roast beef and unlimited roast potatoes and gravy was a treat. Had coffees and drinks out on the terrace after lunch which was really relaxed and the beer garden with sofas looked fantastic but was completely full. Great restaurant, staff super who were good even though they were really busy. We will be back

Called for Sunday lunch, haven’t been for a while and to be honest won’t be returning. Roast beef lunch was not good at all. It came overwhelmed in glue like gravy. Roast potatoes are supposed to be crisp but everything was covered in a ridiculous amount of gravy. 1 carrot and 2 pieces of soggy broccoli and a Yorkshire pudding that irrelevant of the amount of gravy was like cardboard and tasted like it. Absolutely terrible

Stunning area, location, and what a beautiful modern well maintained place this is to visit. The staff were really lovely on arrival. All greet you with a big smile and are interested to serve. The outdoor area is fantastic. Lots of seating There's a car park on site and plenty of street parking too. I highly recommend this place

Just stopped for a drink after a hike up the cragg. They didn't cater for my grandson, who was nearly five so we decided to go home. Otherwise it was all good and the food looked nice.

Drinks order took 15 minutes to arrive at the table despite not seeming overly busy. Coffee was luke warm when it arrived. Server brought our food to the wrong table. Another server brought another table's drinks to our table. When food was served, server said they'd bring finger bowls out, they never arrived. Had to go into the bar to find someone to ask for the bill.
