Was a bit disappointing . Very busy after all it was Easter Sunday. Not enough parking space. Walkers parking up to walk their dogs .not quite sure if they were dinning. No children menus, given smaller portions .side dishes expensive. Veg covered in mustard seeds.

Really lovely pub and amazing staff, every time we’ve been it’s been great service. Went in for a pint yesterday and when returning to the car it had broken down. All of the staff were really helpful and accommodating while we waited to be towed.

I came for a roast with friends and family. The staff were very busy as it was Sunday lunch time, the host seemed stressed but overall managed to work through some confusion regarding tables and we were promptly seated The food and service was good, and the extra potatoes is a nice touch. Desert was excellent

We have had the most fabulous Sunday lunch here today. The staff are delightful and smile as they work. Nothing is too much trouble for them and we thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The lamb was delicious and the bottomless roastie a real treat. Thank you

Square&Compass for food or a drink it’s always a first class welcome from James and the team. Highly recommend, roaring fires in the winter months and bifold doors leading to patio and outside bar in the summer. What’s not to like 👍

This pub is truly amazing great ambiance and food and service always with a smile. A wonderful asset to a beautiful village with walks to the famous Almsclife Crag a must. Looking forward to summer with the bifold doors onto the patio, sunshine wonderfull 🙃

Pleasant pub with good food. Terminally marred by canned music that intrudes like sitting next to a teenager on the train whose ear buds are leaking. Nice for keeping the staff happy no doubt, but don't come here hoping to have a conversation.

Went for dinner on Saturday. Have had mixed experiences in the past, but it really seems like the food and service has improved and I really couldn’t fault it at all. All our food was delicious and the service was spot on.

Had an excellent meal and was served on by a young lad called Jack from start to finish we could not fault him turned out he had only been there 1 month. Spoke with the managers and asked them to pass on how we felt. Was such a polite young lad. Food wasn't half bad too. Overall excellent.

Delicious Sunday lunch today with excellent service. We actually had our wedding reception here in 1984 (yes 40 years ago this year).... back then it was very much traditional pub-look with a red carpet. We had plastic flowers on the tables ! Can't remember the outside seating area being there before, I think it was just a large car park. The place is unrecognisable now from what it was... in a good way! Our Sunday lunch was excellent 😋 the service prompt. We will be back to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary later this year, but will no doubt visit again before then.

Excellent experience. Warm welcome, dog friendly. A great burger and a really tasty well seasoned steak. Great service by all the staff. Only found it as the main road to Harrogate had been closed, so we would never have found this place otherwise. Every cloud.... Can't fault anything, the young lad who served us is a credit to you. Ate in the restaurant this evening as a large party (10 people). Lovely homely feel to it with toasty warm real fire in centre of room. Large menu selection with food intolerances well catered for also. Excellent service and top notch food. A gastro pub well worth a visit.

Have to say this dining pub continues to impress. The ambiance is great, it's a very attractive interior in an attractive country pub. Food is great, service is efficient, the staff team are friendly and the drinks menu also includes four decent hand pumped beers. This is a good place.

We had the most lovely Mother’s Day lunch for 8 today - 3 mums (2 grandma’s and mum) and we were all made to feel very special. The restaurant was full, the atmosphere was great, the food was delicious and the service was friendly and efficient. The service was immaculate in this busy friendly restaurant. We were there for Mother's day and it was a perfect venue for our celebration. After a great welcome, we all enjoyed a hearty roast dinner and a wide choice of delicious deserts. The team of young servers were attentive and efficient contributing to the atmosphere of happy family celebration. They are a credit to their generation! The professional management team worked tirelessly to maintain the feeling of calm and comfort. A small mothers day gift at the end of the meal confirmed a most enjoyable experience. A fantastic example of a well run local business of which you can all be very proud.

Just got home from an AMAZING Mother’s Day meal at the Square and Compass. It was incredibly busy (great atmosphere) and both the food and service were exceptional. Special mention to Jack, our waiter, for his fabulous service. He was brilliant.

We love visiting for Sunday Lunch… the food is amazing and the staff are just as fabulous. We always find there’s a real buzz about the place, a great atmosphere to be in. All the staff are such a lovely bunch of polite and friendly people… they all do an amazing job. The quality of food produced and served is fantastic. I would highly recommend!

Not much more to be said than most reviews - lovely cosy pub, great food and drinks and lovely people who work there. Recommend booking but you can take a chance and walk in. 10/10 and will be back again.

Rude staff, average food, lack of atmosphere – NOT RECOMMENDED In summary, we visited on a Saturday evening, and the pub was almost empty. We had to find staff to show us to our table, we were only informed of all the items on the menu that were sold out when we came to place our order (3 out of 4 meals ordered were sold out!). We were offered alternatives from a ‘specials’ menu which consisted of left over Christmas dishes from the freezer – a seasonal turkey and cranberry pie mid January. Throughout the evening we were served very average food by rude staff. We deducted the discretionary service charge of c£15 from our bill and no-one enquired why! Our comments have been shared with the leadership team. We have received an apologetic, yet generic email and the offer of a ‘free meal and one free drink’ for 50% of the party – I have declined. I don’t want a freebie, I want to not have to complain in the first instance. Unfortunately, a pub ‘dining out’ on past reputation, not current experiences.

Went Christmas eve for lunch and the food was fantastic had the fishcake and sweet chilli beef salad, and to deliver food at that quality when it's so busy was amazing, all staff were professional polite and service was great.
