Our 1st visit after moving to the area & had this recommended. Although they have had a couple of poor reviews recently we wanted to make our own minds up and very glad we did as it was excellent ! Becky looked after us superbly all night and I really enjoyed the chicken & ham pie and my wife said the gammon was the best she can remember eating ! Well done everyone, we will be back !!

My wife and I found out about The Castle Inn through ‘The Extra Mile’ book, and stopped off here for food on a Sunday evening* Easy to get to after exiting the A1M and find the car park, which had plenty of spaces. Very welcoming place from the outside, and a nice, friendly, and warm environment once inside. Greeted by friendly staff upon entering and very easy to talk to - makes all the difference in feeling comfortable, and looking forward to trying out the food we’d heard about through the book mentioned. Service and communication was very good by all staff, and were very considerate of giving us space to decide (as we can both be indecisive!). We didn’t have to wait too long between taking orders and receiving each course. All food was very tasty and the Sunday roast is highly recommended (big Yorkshire puddings, good amount of gravy, and best stuffing I’ve ever had!). The only issue across the whole evening was that the desert (Lemon Meringue Pie) was still a little icy on the base, but didn’t take away very much from how tasty it was. We would not hesitate to go back here for food or even to stay on our way up or down the county from here in the North East. Thank you all at the Castle Inn! 😊 *We were in the restaurant at the time that the person below (Tracey) was complaining to the staff on shift. Whilst I can’t confirm the “devastation” that they experienced, the manner of her complaint was completely inappropriate and unfair on both others trying to enjoy their evening, as well as the staff themselves. There are much more considerate and caring ways that this could have been communicated, and not for the population of Spofforth to hear. Well done Joe and the team for not responding in the same way.

To sum the place up I would say not bothered waiting staff and lack-lustre over-priced food. We had to ask for menus back at the bar after telling them we wanted to eat and then we had to get up and order at the bar as the uninterested staff had clearly forgotten about us. The haddock and chips could have been good if there was more haddock than batter and more than 20 small chips plus some warm peas would have helped. The thinnest bit of fish I have ever seen for £16.50, the chips whilst very tasty were very few and I left still hungry. The roast pork was very good tbf shame about the not crispy roast potatoes. Do not bother spending £5.50 on the cauliflower cheese side as my 12 year old can make it better.

We arrived in the village for our stay, we met some neighbours who warned us this place wasn’t great. We had booked and wanted to try it for ourselves. They were not wrong. We ordered starters which were ok then 40 minutes later 1 main arrived. They had forgotten a roast. It happens (even when you have no other tables eating). We asked for the other to be kept warm. 10 minutes later we received both dishes cold. We told the on duty manager Joe, there was an offer to replace, at gone 8pm we decided not to. Our plates were left on the table for us to look at what we could have had! The “manager” Joe was having a good laugh with the other staff. This was breaking point! This manager is playing with, as he confirmed, an independent pub owners money! Didn’t give a stuff! I guess as he’s still getting paid it doesn’t really matter. As a fellow publican I would be devastated if he was a member of my team, in all truth if I was the chef at this establishment I would hang my head in shame but then with no food being sent back I wouldn’t even have known. I rarely give reviews and I sincerely hope this independent pub owner can get a team that aren’t just in it for the money and actually care about the establishment! Good luck

Met for a family gathering at the weekend. 9 of us in a side room. The venue itself is lovely. The food was at best average and quite disappointing given the prices. I had a plate of ribs and a steak. The ribs were flavourless, with very little meat on the bone. I get better ribs with more meat and flavour at the local takeaway. The steak was incredibly bland. Under seasoned and not really cooked enough on the surface. Very little colour. Others reported disappointing chips on the fish and chips. They looked great but were not fully cooked in the middle. It also took ages to be served between the starters and mains. Overall just average. All looks and no substance. I wouldn’t go back.

Such a shame, we have stayed here regularly and found it great. However, rooms still superb but food standard has gone down. And remember to book breakfast on arrival if staying or they they argue and try to charge you full menu price. Waldorf slaw is not waldorf slaw but coleslaw with a couple of grapes added!

We recently celebrated my parents’ Diamond Wedding Anniversary at the Castle. We were a party of 21, spanning three generations, and had also hired a photographer to take group photos. The Castle staff were extremely accommodating and friendly, the food and service were both very good and the ambiance was lovely, both in the garden and in the Barn Restaurant. We were really impressed - thank you so much for a really lovely event 😃

Just returned from a lovely 2 night stay at Castle Inn. Parking was plentiful, greeted by friendly staff member who checked us in swiftly and took us to our room. Room was lovely, olde worldly, and nice and clean. Had a lovely meal first night in the restaurant and breakfast the following morning was also good. All the staff we encountered were so friendly and more than happy to make sure everything was just right, which it was. Bed was lovely and comfy, shower good. Hearty breakfast on final morning, which certainly set us up for 4 hr drive back to London. Would defo stay again if ever up that way and would defo recommend to anyone looking for a lovely place to stay 😁

Food good service good Absolutely spoilt evening by people with dogs. While eating our meal 3 dogs were taken past us to another table right across the restaurant, one dog lurched towards table and stuck it's head between two of our party's plates. We informed waitress that the dogs had had their heads on our table and the other one and needed disinfecting but this was not done by the time we left. We withheld the service charge and requested the management was informed of our disgust at how unhygienic it is to allow dogs in there. We feel that it's becoming too normal to allow animals into food establishments and claim a high cleanliness rating.

We stayed at The Castle Inn at Spofforth after deciding we would stay over after visiting the Great Yorkshire Show rather than travelling back home. After looking at the available hotels with vacancies in accessible rooms, we booked The Castle. What a brilliant decision that was. The hotel is located in a tiny village surrounded by open countryside. We had the annexe room. It was really nicely designed, the kingsized bed was very comfortable, the wet room was spacious and again well designed but the hot water temperature either needs to be reduced or a warning notice. The whole annexe was spotless. The only tiny niggle was NO BISCUITS but it is nitpicking. The staff were great, very friendly and accommodating. We will definitely return if in that part of the country again in the future.

Just popped in for a quick refreshment with a friend whilst on a dog walk from Wetherby. Enjoyed half a Guinness, and perused the menu, which looked like it would be worth another visit. Staff were very friendly, environment comfortable and beverages very quaffable. There was a civil marriage celebration occurring in the rear dining room at the time of our visit, so the beer garden was not accessible, but it was lovely to see people obviously having a lovely time, and we both thought it such a wonderful location for such an event.

We had an enjoyable Sunday lunch at a round table in the conservatory area. The restaurant was busy on Fathers Day and the staff were very welcoming and attentive during our meal. We had 3 excellent starters of smoked salmon, crispy squid and a fresh plate of tomatoes, peas and feta. The children’s roasts were served at the same time which was appreciated. The adults roast dinners were all excellent with good portions. A mixture of excellent desserts to finish. Overall nearly perfect but as the sun came out ( amazingly ) it became far too hot at our table. Fortunately we were able to eat our desserts at another table.

Our experience did not start well. Although there were plenty of staff and the place was quiet, no-one acknowledged us when we arrived, and I was totally ignored at the bar by a young man endlessly fiddling with dressing a drink which he had already poured, and ended up serving unadorned. When he finally returned to the bar, he took my drinks order and gave me some menus which I took to the table that my wife had chosen, only to be told that we couldn't sit there as it was reserved and were pointed in the general direction of the scruffy end of the bar. All that said, the food when it arrived was excellent, the drinks were splendid and the service once we were finally seated was OK. It's just a shame that my memory of today will be of bad initial service rather than good food and drink.

Four of us came along for a family meal. Noted that we had to register our details as we went in for parking (overkill?). Quite a few of the items on the menu were unavailable. I don't think the burger represented anywhere near good value. Fish and chips looked good. As did the pie. Service was good, although they were understaffed. It's the "discretionary" service charge that grates. (a) If service is good then most people will tip - We would have anyway (b) if this is being used to increase the pay of staff rather than paying them a decent wage then the business is at fault. So.... remove the service charge and improve supply of menu items and we'll be back. Oh, should also say, the building and surroundings are lovely.

I wanted to feedback on the breakfast we had this morning at the pub. We wanted to come as it was new and we had never tried breakfast before here. We were quite disappointed on the service and even more on the food to be honest. The food we waited over half an hour for and in the meantime had already drank our coffee. The food arrived, we ordered the Full English, and the bacon was very overcooked, we received 1/4 of a mushroom and 1/4 tomato, which wasn’t described on the menu and I got the crusts toasted off a cut white loaf and we didn’t get asked what type of toast we wanted. I also got charged 50p for a small jug of soya milk which wasn’t detailed on the menu. We also had to order another coffee as we had already drunk our one waiting for the food to arrive. All in all with service charge it was £41.25 which isn’t cheap. On a positive note the sausage was great!

I certainly did not see the signage, not that I was expecting to have to check in like this in a pub car park. Town centre maybe but a pub car park! Come on… nor did I get any reminders from the staff. Nor did I see the tablets he mentions elsewhere as I was served directly to the table and very well too. We had our wedding day at The Castle Inn back in July and without a doubt it was the most incredible day! Every detail from planning the wedding right through to the final dance was taken into account and thought of by Gee and Tara. We spent lots of time planning with Gee who helped to make our dream day come to life. We felt relaxed and excited whenever we met Gee at the venue to talk through the day as her kind and calm personality shone through as well as her excitement for our wedding day. Tara organised our wedding day down to every last detail. Even to the detail of a specifically timed 'walking down the aisle song' that Tara pulled off with such ease. Tara took time throughout our day to ensure we were happy with everything along with the kindest, most considerate staff supporting us throughout the whole wedding weekend. We would highly recommend having your wedding day at The Castle Inn, whether it be small or big it is the most perfect place to say I Do!!

We had a delicious lunch. I brought my elderly parents and Abi , our waitress was extremely patient and accommodating especially with my mum who has dementia. Abi was a credit to you and the food was absolutely delicious!! I will definitely be back!

Booked the beautiful private dining room for 15 to celebrate a 21st birthday party. The process of ordering and arranging was easy. On the evening the staff were brilliant and we all had great food and a really special evening.

My favourite eatery but terrible gluten free fish Had numerous fantastic meals but unfortunately the fish and chips were terrible The batter was too brittle and the skin left on made it difficult to slice making a mess on the plate and the mushy peas were slightly warm. The worst plate of food I have ever had and will be amaze if this stays on the menu over a month

I’ve been to the Smiths Arms on many occasion over the years. I have family in Harrogate so we go there because the food’s good and they cater for vegans. I was in last night. The 3 of us had a wonderful meal and indulged in puddings. Save room, folks. The Bakewell was yummy. Great service and happy experience for us all. Thank you. My dog was welcomed too, we sat at a cosy table in the bar area near the fire.
