I recently visited this pub with family for mother’s day and although the food was good it was expensive. which was increased my the special mother day menu that was £35 for two courses or £40 for 3 courses not including any drinks, so I went for the 2 course meal £35 but the food I got was £19 for the main course and £8 for the pudding on the normal Sunday menu. £19 + £8 = £27 but they charged £35 so £8 per person more expensive which adds up when you have 8 people. So very disappointed with the whole experience

Nearly £40 for a pizza and a Caeser salad. Pizza base tastes of nothing and was not cooked enough. Didn’t send back as was starving by the time it came. Only ate half it was that tasteless. salad was tasty but it was just a small bowl lettuce chicken and bacon. Great atmosphere and lovely looking pub but the food is town prices but not town taste And to see the Sunday dinner is around £25! Wow. When you can go to the sunn inn at Norwood for a carvery at about £10! And a member of the party had a burger which was around £16 and the size of the burger meat was ridiculously small! Next time we won’t travel here in a taxi and will walk in to town in Harrogate for a better meal and better prices for sure

Popped in spontaneously for a meal whilst on holiday. Just have to say the staff were delightful and the service second to none (especially the young lad who seemed to be managing the dining room single handedly (apologies if there was someone behind the scenes helping); he was the epitome of everything you could want from service in a restaurant- quick, efficient, polite, friendly and nothing was too much trouble - sorry we didn't get your name). The food and ambience were excellent too. Couldn't fault it.

Much bigger pub than I expected. Lots of space, separated dining areas, bar, restaurant, etc. Good choice on the regular menu plus weekly specials. Fairly wide range of alcoholic beverages able from the bar, and not too extravagantly priced. I would definitely visit here again. We (my wife and I, our six year old Andy elderly dad) went here for lunch today, on a whim. It’s a very attractive restaurant inside, nicely decorated and laid out, with nice atmosphere and a nice feeling. My father and I ordered fish and chips (£17), my wife chose a Caesar salad with chicken (£16) and my son had a small fish and chips. Then the problems started. Our food arrived, and the waitress, putting our son’s meal down, tipped the entire plate onto the table, and then proceeded to pick it up with her bare hands and put it back on the plate! My wife’s salad came without chicken, despite the very clear order, and the mushy peas that came with my fish and chips were flat cold; they’d just been taken out of the fridge and someone had forgotten to heat them up, so we sent two of the four meals back. My wife’s Caesar salad re-appeared, but without any dressing. My fish and chips came back, this time with lukewarm mushy peas and a much smaller piece of fish. Taste-wise, I wish we’d just gone to the local F&C takeaway. They were uninspirational at best; very bland would be a good description. Thankfully, after my complaint, one portion of F&C was removed from the bill, but it still included a 10% service fee…I don’t think I’d be going back.

We eat out most Sundays and this used to be one of the more special ones to visit. Always a bit pricey but worth it. However today was very disappointing, service was shockingly bad and food wasn't much better. Waitress was borderline rude and inattentive. Food was only just warm, hardly any meat, and carrots and parsnips that looked and tasted like christmas leftovers. Desserts had shrunk and at £10 looked woefully small. Don't pay extra for crackling...its as tough as old boots... brought it home for the dog and even she wasn't impressed! At over £72 for two, we feel pretty ripped off and will be taking this off our lists of regulars.

Fabulous Pub. Fantastic food, friendly staff and cracking atmosphere always. The pub itself occupies a large area with the front section offering a cosy and inviting more casual dining area with another area to the right which is still cosy but more opulent and in theme with Spofforth Castle and the roots of the village. To the back is a beautiful modern dining area full of light, natural wood and faux cherry blossoms and at the back is an enormous beer garden with a huge patio area and modern patio furniture. The drinks selection is expansive with everything from local draught beer to fine wines and cocktails. The food is great with everything from brunch to dinner to Pizza to Sunday Lunch offered. I like the fact there are other options on the menu for Sunday lunch apart from the classic roasts, last time I went for sea bass with nduja and tomatoes and it didn't disappoint. The fish was beautiful and cooked to perfection and felt like something that would be served in a luxury restaurant not a local pub. That said the pub also offers a selection of classically British "comfort foods" such as fish and chips and the classic roasts all of which from my experience have been delicious and satisfying. In my experience the staff have always been friendly and welcoming even down to the young weekend staff and they never fail to be polite even when they are rushed off their feet. There are also several monthly activities including quiz's, festive wreath making and film nights. We've done the quiz's a couple of times and although we were rubbish it made for an overall enjoyable and entertaining evening. All in all a great pub with tons of character and at a time where the hospitality sector is under increasing pressure this pub is doing everything right!

Visited here for Sunday lunch ,initial greeting was luke warm but we dismissed it , it was very busy but once order was taken main came within 5 minutes, main was small portion, but ok except yorkshire puddings which were so hard the just shattered into near dust unless soaked in gravy. Very little veg half a piece of carrot and 1 piece of broccoli that was all for £23. We then sat with finished plates for about 20 minutes our empty drinks weren't asked if we wanted more and the staff seemed very unenthusiastic. Many staff walked past us many times. In the end a server came over not our original waitress and took our plates. My dessert was wrong served lemon sorbet as affogatto!! Had to go back. On a whole food was OK but felt over priced next door £10 cheaper per head!. Service not good at all, long wait rimes between course didn't really seem on the ball for the tables. £80 for a 2 course lunch and 1 drink each not great tbh. Visiting the area but wouldn't return to this place for food.

My wife and I found out about The Castle Inn through ‘The Extra Mile’ book, and stopped off here for food on a Sunday evening* Easy to get to after exiting the A1M and find the car park, which had plenty of spaces. Very welcoming place from the outside, and a nice, friendly, and warm environment once inside. Greeted by friendly staff upon entering and very easy to talk to - makes all the difference in feeling comfortable, and looking forward to trying out the food we’d heard about through the book mentioned. Service and communication was very good by all staff, and were very considerate of giving us space to decide (as we can both be indecisive!). We didn’t have to wait too long between taking orders and receiving each course. All food was very tasty and the Sunday roast is highly recommended (big Yorkshire puddings, good amount of gravy, and best stuffing I’ve ever had!). The only issue across the whole evening was that the desert (Lemon Meringue Pie) was still a little icy on the base, but didn’t take away very much from how tasty it was. We would not hesitate to go back here for food or even to stay on our way up or down the county from here in the North East. Thank you all at the Castle Inn! 😊 *We were in the restaurant at the time that the person below (Tracey) was complaining to the staff on shift. Whilst I can’t confirm the “devastation” that they experienced, the manner of her complaint was completely inappropriate and unfair on both others trying to enjoy their evening, as well as the staff themselves. There are much more considerate and caring ways that this could have been communicated, and not for the population of Spofforth to hear. Well done Joe and the team for not responding in the same way.

To sum the place up I would say not bothered waiting staff and lack-lustre over-priced food. We had to ask for menus back at the bar after telling them we wanted to eat and then we had to get up and order at the bar as the uninterested staff had clearly forgotten about us. The haddock and chips could have been good if there was more haddock than batter and more than 20 small chips plus some warm peas would have helped. The thinnest bit of fish I have ever seen for £16.50, the chips whilst very tasty were very few and I left still hungry. The roast pork was very good tbf shame about the not crispy roast potatoes. Do not bother spending £5.50 on the cauliflower cheese side as my 12 year old can make it better.

We arrived in the village for our stay, we met some neighbours who warned us this place wasn’t great. We had booked and wanted to try it for ourselves. They were not wrong. We ordered starters which were ok then 40 minutes later 1 main arrived. They had forgotten a roast. It happens (even when you have no other tables eating). We asked for the other to be kept warm. 10 minutes later we received both dishes cold. We told the on duty manager Joe, there was an offer to replace, at gone 8pm we decided not to. Our plates were left on the table for us to look at what we could have had! The “manager” Joe was having a good laugh with the other staff. This was breaking point! This manager is playing with, as he confirmed, an independent pub owners money! Didn’t give a stuff! I guess as he’s still getting paid it doesn’t really matter. As a fellow publican I would be devastated if he was a member of my team, in all truth if I was the chef at this establishment I would hang my head in shame but then with no food being sent back I wouldn’t even have known. I rarely give reviews and I sincerely hope this independent pub owner can get a team that aren’t just in it for the money and actually care about the establishment! Good luck

Met for a family gathering at the weekend. 9 of us in a side room. The venue itself is lovely. The food was at best average and quite disappointing given the prices. I had a plate of ribs and a steak. The ribs were flavourless, with very little meat on the bone. I get better ribs with more meat and flavour at the local takeaway. The steak was incredibly bland. Under seasoned and not really cooked enough on the surface. Very little colour. Others reported disappointing chips on the fish and chips. They looked great but were not fully cooked in the middle. It also took ages to be served between the starters and mains. Overall just average. All looks and no substance. I wouldn’t go back.

We stayed at The Castle Inn at Spofforth after deciding we would stay over after visiting the Great Yorkshire Show rather than travelling back home. After looking at the available hotels with vacancies in accessible rooms, we booked The Castle. What a brilliant decision that was. The hotel is located in a tiny village surrounded by open countryside. We had the annexe room. It was really nicely designed, the kingsized bed was very comfortable, the wet room was spacious and again well designed but the hot water temperature either needs to be reduced or a warning notice. The whole annexe was spotless. The only tiny niggle was NO BISCUITS but it is nitpicking. The staff were great, very friendly and accommodating. lovely pub and restaurant with beer garden. great menu and food. a favourite stop off on walks around Spofforth. great place to relax in the beer garden on a sunny afternoon / evening with outside bar. remember to log your car registration into the terminal before leaving however else you’ll get a parking ticket. Staff always remind you and there are lots of signage informing you too.

This could have been 5 stars.... Food is really great but simple options like new potatoes with fish no available. Orders not delivered on time. So mains came but sides forgotten. Follow up drinks orders forgotten. Spent £200 for 5 adults plus 3 small ones. Mandatory service not appreciated.. I always tip even if not totally happy (just vary the amount), but if it's going on the bill then put it in the prices. Don't you pay your staff? Great place and location spoiled by small niggles... need to up your game.

We used this as a stopover on a trip north. We found the staff friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is relaxed and the food is good. We had our dog with us who was able to join us while we ate. Recommended.

Nice venue with good service. Quality of Sunday roast was very disappointing, everyone who had the beef left most of it.

Our experience did not start well. Although there were plenty of staff and the place was quiet, no-one acknowledged us when we arrived, and I was totally ignored at the bar by a young man endlessly fiddling with dressing a drink which he had already poured, and ended up serving unadorned. When he finally returned to the bar, he took my drinks order and gave me some menus which I took to the table that my wife had chosen, only to be told that we couldn't sit there as it was reserved and were pointed in the general direction of the scruffy end of the bar. All that said, the food when it arrived was excellent, the drinks were splendid and the service once we were finally seated was OK. It's just a shame that my memory of today will be of bad initial service rather than good food and drink.

I travelled for work and hit the jackpot with this find. From the moment I arrived there was ample parking, when I walked in it was clear to enter your reg for free parking. I was greeted straight away and told someone would be with me, I was checked in and shown to my room. The rooms were lovely and value for money, very comfortable bed and pillows, could not fault the room. Also I had evening meal and breakfast, again first class service and food. Overall a very pleasant place to eat with a welcoming atmosphere even for a sold female traveller.

Four of us came along for a family meal. Noted that we had to register our details as we went in for parking (overkill?). Quite a few of the items on the menu were unavailable. I don't think the burger represented anywhere near good value. Fish and chips looked good. As did the pie. Service was good, although they were understaffed. It's the "discretionary" service charge that grates. (a) If service is good then most people will tip - We would have anyway (b) if this is being used to increase the pay of staff rather than paying them a decent wage then the business is at fault. So.... remove the service charge and improve supply of menu items and we'll be back. Oh, should also say, the building and surroundings are lovely.

The Roast was excellent l would of liked the Tender stems cooked a little more too crunchy for my liking I would have preferred a traditional Crumble with a thicker topping

Excellent! We visited recently with friends and their son and were mightily impressed - all of the food was exceptional, especially the fish and chips! The deserts were great too, even if they muddled up the brownie which they quickly realised and took off the bill. We’ll certainly be back!!

I wanted to feedback on the breakfast we had this morning at the pub. We wanted to come as it was new and we had never tried breakfast before here. We were quite disappointed on the service and even more on the food to be honest. The food we waited over half an hour for and in the meantime had already drank our coffee. The food arrived, we ordered the Full English, and the bacon was very overcooked, we received 1/4 of a mushroom and 1/4 tomato, which wasn’t described on the menu and I got the crusts toasted off a cut white loaf and we didn’t get asked what type of toast we wanted. I also got charged 50p for a small jug of soya milk which wasn’t detailed on the menu. We also had to order another coffee as we had already drunk our one waiting for the food to arrive. All in all with service charge it was £41.25 which isn’t cheap. On a positive note the sausage was great!

My favourite eatery but terrible gluten free fish Had numerous fantastic meals but unfortunately the fish and chips were terrible The batter was too brittle and the skin left on made it difficult to slice making a mess on the plate and the mushy peas were slightly warm. The worst plate of food I have ever had and will be amaze if this stays on the menu over a month

The Sunday lunch menu is very limited with a choice of 3 different Sunday roasts, Fish n Chips, and a Veg option. That's it. We were then very disappointed to find out that they had run out of fish n chips. Crazy when the menu is already so limited. We weren't happy when the TV was put on for the football when we were hoping for a cosy family dinner. The final disappointment was that a 10% service charge was automatically added. We removed this and tipped our lovely waitress with cash. So many easy improvements could be made to have a massive improvement if the owners would listen to feedback.
