The Spread Eagle in Chesterfield

Called in as it is in the CAMRA GBG. A tad disappointing as several hand pumps were dead. The Ashover Littlemoor Citra was in good order though.

So disappointed, when we arrived to check in for our three night stay, as booked over the phone to the manager a few months before, we were told that there was no booking found on their system. The manager was called and we were told that he was on his way in to sort the problem. The problem was that he didn’t write our booking down! We were offered a free drink and a nights stay in an unsuitable room but we declined as we needed three nights accommodation. We found somewhere else but it was considerably more. We will not be returning or recommending the Spread eagle again.

We chose the Spread Eagle to host our wedding reception. What a fantastic choice it was! Connor was incredibly helpful and friendly. Connor had arranged a buffet for us and it was spectacular! The whole atmosphere, venue and hosts couldn’t be faulted at all! We couldn’t Thankyou all enough for helping our big day to be so successful! A massive Thankyou to all involved at The Spread Eagle!

Absolutely wonderful service, I was stuck and Connor was very professional above and beyond helpful not just for me but other clients that were staying too. Bad gas a lovely modern vibe.

Monday night and it was very quiet. Just the staff and five of us for a meeting.. didn't know they did food. Will go again though

And what a find. Originally tried to book into the Wetherspoons Hotel but, they were full. Love or Hate the 'brand' Wetherspoons are normally good quality rooms. HOWEVER, booked into The Spread Eagle, and glad we did. I've scrubbed the former off my 'list' and The Spread Eagle will be the new 'go to' for Chesterfield. Fantastic rooms, quality shower, comfortable beds and quality linen. Good selection of beer and ales, friendly atmosphere and Breakfast did not disappoint. Perfect start to the day. Could have done with half hour for earlier for breakfast, from a work point of view, as we caught the traffic at 8am. But that would not stop me staying again !!!

Car parking is available to the rear of the property. Unfortunately, cannot assess food (Although the menu looked good) as the kitchen was not open when we visited. however, there are plenty of options locally. The building is listed and very quaint. The stairs are extremely steep and narrow. Not suitable for anybody with mobility problems and beware when deciding what luggage you use. We noted the comments of previous guests and packed an overnight bag The bar is very trendy and the manager was extremely helpful and friendly. Would definitely visit again when passing

No chef so no food. Great pub great beer garden.

Unfortunately the kitchen was closed during our visit and subsequently cannot offer a rating but the manager advised that a new chef would be appointed soon However this is a little gem. The rooms were recently refurbished and facilities are extremely good. The manager was extremely friendly and I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel

Where should I start, well we paid £70.00 for an over night stay, room was good and clean, that's about it. One reason why I booked this hotel was it's location, and I love a good old English breakfast in the morning but, and this is a BIG BUT, I was told that there was no food on site, didn't state this when I booked it though a booking site. We went out for a meal and got back for a last drink in the bar at 10 pm, guess what, the bar was shut, no one around, and couldn't even get a bottle of water. Morning arrived, toilet paper running out, so I went down stairs to find help, guess what, no one around. If you have leprosy this is a perfect place to stay, as you will probably be the only guests there, as we were. I would love to here their response. No service and no atmosphere

Clean and tidy rooms, small but the price reflects this. Modern and recently updated (June 2023). Breakfast was a few long life floppy pastries, a few protein bars and instant coffee with long life milk as the kitchens were closed ☹️ but there are many places within 5 minutes walk nearby to eat at. Good WiFi, Onsite parking was excellent. Check-in flexible (key at bar) Checkout 11am.

Good little pub hidden in the town centre with its own patio area for the summer. Good real ale

Lovely ‘proper’ pub, recently refitted with a good choice at the bar. Staff are friendly and helpful. Stayed overnight, rooms are clean and well presented. Only possible downside - ridiculously steep stairs! But it’s a VERY old building. Recommended without reserve. Did I mention the excellent food available during bar opening hours…

Stayed here for 1 night. Poor hygiene rating, the stairs to the rooms are far too steep, very dangerous. Incredibly uncomfortable beds, people smoking in rooms below and mouldy showers. Very disappointing, completely ruined our weekend.

I used to call in here years ago but it's all been refurbished a couple of years ago. It's airy and classy with a welcoming atmosphere. We've eaten here several times and never been disappointed. There's a new menu on at the moment which isn't extensive but I feel that's a good thing. The kitchen is open so you can tell they are proud of their food. A couple of small observations I'd put forward would be it was a shame the special board isn't available anymore in the afternoon and I feel another staff member would be better as the lady (who is awesome) was having to serve, take orders, deliver food to tables etc. An easy 5 stars from us *****

Stopped off here a couple of times recently. We had planned to eat on one occasion , only to be let down by a very Taxi and heavy traffic ( we were on a tight schedule ).. However , we will try the Food at a later date , but we have enjoyed a drink here. Service is very good as is the ambiance and the range of drinks. We will certainly return.

I haven't been in here for a long time and I couldn't believe how good it looks now after a refurb. We were just in for drinks but the food looked great and the staff were lovely

Room was great, good location and very convenient. I think there should have been a little bit better communication about the breakfast though. I'm sure I was told served until 10:30an. To my disappointment I was turned away at 10:15am told it ended at 9:30am. I'm not even sure it was listed on the laminate of services left in the room. It was a good stat nether the less. I'll look them up again and double check and set an alarm for breakfast next time as the room wasn't cheap.

Sunday lunch. we had prawn and crayfish cocktail on a bed of lettuce cocktail sauce very watery not much taste for our main we had Sunday lunch which to be fair one most tasty iv had ,the only thing that let it down was service we had to ask for vegetables some 10min after the meat and potatoes was brought out.the veg came pack very tightly it what I call a soup bowl between 3 adults ask for a gravy boat never came by this time meal was getting cold,we was ask if would like dessert and menu came but no one returned to take our order shame because Sunday lunch was delicious 😥😥

Excellent service! A wonderfully warm welcome to the hotel. Ample private parking. Smart bar. Well appointed, clean bedrooms with roomy ensure and large walk in shower. Steep staircase. Breakfast choice was very good, we had eggs royale and our friends had full English. Breakfast was excellent. We will definitely consider staying here again.

Absolutely believe the photos online. This pub and hotel are well worth a visit and stay. One member of staff was excellent and exceptional during breakfast, nothing was too much to ask. The pub is a shini g example of being modernised but kept in keeping with the history of the building. Extremely clean and tidy, toilets were spotless, carpark to rear. Rooms were to an extremely high standard and good value for money. Modern in decorative design, but showing the beauty of the original beams. The full English breakfast was surprisingly large and full of flavour, cooked to perfection. I cannot recommend this place enough. 👍🥇💯💓🍺🍽️🥓⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Fabulous beer garden great food friendly staff

A real little gem to be found in the middle of Chesterfield. The staff were really helpful and welcoming. The pub and its bedrooms have recently been refurbished to a very nice standard. Just take care on the stairs, they're an original feature and a little steep, but the bedrooms are worth the climb. An added bonus was the free guest carpark.

We found this little gem. First impressions not great but when you step inside all very nice. We stayed just the 1 night as we were passing through. Basic room but very comfortable. There were a couple of things not quite as clean as could be but on the whole lovely. Bar downstairs with really clean with revamped patio area. Breakfast was delicious. Staff very friendly so all in all would definitely recommend.

We visited overnight for B&B, the pub and accommodation is very clean, modern and well maintained. Rooms are spacious and airy. En-suite has double shower, room was perfect for getting ready for a night out. Tea and coffee making facilities. Breakfast was a choice from the main pub menu, all included in the price. Throughly enjoyed our stay, helpful, polite friendly staff made the visit even better. Thank you!

As a pub eatery, the Spread Eagle is an ideal choice. We received a warm welcome and had a choice of seating. Inside is bright and airey. The menu is simple but sufficient and the food was scrumptious. I had the Steak and Ale Pie with thick cut chips, mushy peas and a separate jug of gravy. The pastry was light and the steak was in unctuous, tender chunks. Absolutely delightful. My wife had Sea Bass with Ginger, Honey and Soy stir fry. Both the fish and noodles were beautifully cooked. The beer let the side down and lacked body; the usual complaint. It started with a head but after a couple of mouthfuls, went flat as a pancake. Service was excellent throughout and the music was pleasant. Their wi-fi is the best we have found in Chesterfield, so far. It did get a bit loud at times but that seems to be par for the course in this town. That said, we still had an enjoyable night.

Great place to stay for the solo traveller e.g. going to the cricket . The rooms have character and are clean with all expected amenities. A good breakfast was included in my price

Overall stay good .... We we're apparently checked into the incorrect room so rather than deluxe we got standard which hadn't been cleaned or made ready, we were unaware of this until 9pm and no compensation given though another couple were very excited by their unexpected upgrade ... Breakfast fab when it came but breakfast served 8.30 - 9.30 but coffee machine wasn't set up until 8.45 so no breakfast even taken as orders until 8.45 ..... Place has potential just need to get things organized

Enjoyed Sunday dinner here with family. The staff offered a good friendly service. The food was delicious I had prawn cocktail to start and roast pork with yorkshire pudding and roast,mash potatoes and a good choice of vegetables.

A pleasant surprise in visiting the Spread Eagle as I recall it to have been an old drinkers pub back in the day. However it has been refurbished a hotel with bar and food and its lovely. Great food, rather limited menu and specials board but I struggle with too much choice so perfect for me. I visited with 4 others and we had a range of lasagne, fish and chips, burger or pie. Everyone enjoyed their food. The staff are friendly and efficient, the day we went a birthday party of about 10 was going on so they were a bit loud, not really complaining as its expected at a big gathering but we were put at the side of this table, we couldn't hear ourselves talk so requested to be moved, this was arranged so all happy. There is a spacious garden outside which will be lovely to have a drink in the summer. All round a very pleasant experience so give it a try 😊

Been to Chesterfield twice and only just spotted this place on the map. Never came up before. Very modern inside but had a cracking ale on so will be back on our next trip soon.

One night stay whilst in the area and couldn’t fault it. Lovely clean and well appointed room, nice and quiet despite being on a main road, powerful and hot shower and Netflix access as a bonus! Professional and friendly staff when checking in and at breakfast. And the breakfast was amazing! Thank you, we will be back!

Stayed here for 1 night (25th) Beautiful,clean, modern room. We didn’t eat an evening meal there but food being served to other people looked lovely. Staff lovely and went out of their way. Breakfast great good choices served to us and not that awful buffet...

Accommodation was excellent. But having booked mainly because of the restaurant reviews we were informed that food was not available as the chef was ill. An information sheet in the bedroom stated that food was available from 8.30, including a breakfast menu but upon entering...

Sorry but not value for money! location is good but overall not recommend for family stay. Ok for one night if you are passing by the town and have no kids. Free parking. Was clean, no lifts, narrow stairs, cheap fittings! Poor breakfast options.
