We booked a Sunday lunch yesterday and the venue and the food were good. However the service we received really let the whole experience down. After taking our order we waited an hour for food. No one checked and no one came to see if we needed another drink. We did try and grab the attention of the waiting staff after a while but struggled. When the table next to us who had ordered 30 mins after us got their food we did manage to grab the attention of one of the waitresses it turns out something had gone wrong with our order. We didn’t really get an apology just that they knew it was a problem before we pointed it out and the food was now getting prepared. As I said above the food was good when we got it. They then cleared our plates and about 15 minutes later I managed to get the attention of a waitress to ask if we could order dessert and I was told no as the kitchen was now closed. After I pointed out the delay wasn’t our fault the manager came over and took our dessert order. We were then quite perplexed when dessert orders for other tables around us all came out when the kitchen was closed. I did ask for the bill and that I have to say is the only thing that came quickly and in-fact they came with the card machine for us to pay mid dessert. So overall what should have been a good experience was massively let down by the service we received. Unfortunately I don’t think we’ll be back.

Wow wow wow, the Eagle Soars again. The Spread Eagle is back on the map! We visited on the restaurant's opening night and were prepared for a few teething problems... but, there were none to be found! We ordered a variety of starters: The Battered Squid, Ham Hock Terrine and the Suppli De Carbonara. Squid is always a test for a quality chef, but this was cooked to perfection. Melt in the mouth pieces of fresh squid in a light crispy batter with a delicious roasted garlic and chilli mayo. The best squid we had ever had! The ham hock Terrine was also excellent, chunky pieces of flavoursome ham hock in a tasty but not overpowering jelly. All served with a delicious homemade piccalilli and lightly toasted artisan bread. Having never tried Suppli de Carbonara before, I felt I should! Wow... rich spaghetti carbonara formed into a sphere and deep fried... what more could you ask for? All starters were 10/10 exquisite. On to the mains: Two of us had the Seabass and Prawn Linguine, which was a sumptuous and filling bowl of pasta, with expertly cooked seabass and prawns all served in a garlicy, herby, tasty dressing. Alongside this, one of our party had the nduja and beef shin lasagne, which (having tasted it) was a deliciously rich and tasty bowl of deliciousness, with a slight hint of spice from the nduja sausage. Again, 10/10 for the mains! Well done Spread Eagle! Desserts: If you've read this far, I'm sure you know what I'm going to say! 10/10! I had the Key Lime Pie which was incredible. Tart and sweet, excellent pastry and a beautiful limey centre, all topped with light and fluffy meringue. Served with soft and creamy ice cream! Salted caramel and chocolate tart: glossy and thick chocolate filling sprinkled with golden crunchy pieces all encased in a light and crispy tart base, served with ice cream! Superb! Cherry Bakewell cheesecake: A perfect cheesecake filling served on an excellent base - all topped with an intense cherry flavoured sauce, making for yet another superb dessert. The service was excellent and we were well attended to all evening by their polite and helpful waiting staff. I also think the prices are very reasonable, especially for the amazing quality of food we had! Well done Spread Eagle team, really pleased that Preston Village has yet another excellent eatery! Overall, the most delicious meal, which could only topped by a slight improvement in the presentation!

I cannot believe the most recent review’s that give this place a bad name. Bar staff would never spit in someone’s face or bar someone for not being British. BNP attitude?? Get lost, man, you’ve probably not even been in there before. This is a fantastic pub/restaurant with a wonderful reputation. I highly recommend it for the wonderful staff, management, choice of beer’s,price’s and most of all….. the food. We were in tonight and the food just melted in my mouth. Everything is obviously made from scratch with fresh ingredient’s. I’m a Michelin star chef so I know when food is good. Who else offer’s freshly made Confit Duck,Bacon Chop,Smoked Haddock Chowder,Sea Bream,Sausage and Caramelised Onion with mash etc anywhere else in North Tyneside?? The most you’d get in any other pub in the area is a rustler’s burger with a pickle in!! Book in advance as it get’s busy on the weekend’s for food. And don’t even get me started on how delicious the Sunday roast’s are. Don’t go anywhere else. Go to The Spread Eagle.

Sunday lunch and an 18th birthday meal for family with around 9 of us. Booked at 3pm . Stright away told to wait 1 hour before the kitchen would be ready to recieve orders, as they could not cope. Not a great start. So we sat and waited for an hour which was not too much of a problem. Eventually we were able to order. Just a young lad serving and he did his best, however let down I think by those around him. Anyway, order placed. One of our junior guests has a food allergy and this caused melt down from the kitchen cook. Again to be fair she was concerned not to cause any allergy reaction. Apparently the whole kitchen could be allergy affected hence that person would not be cooked for. After some gentle negociation a roast dinner was deemed safe enough. We were then informed they had run out of Yorkshire puddings.....really ? No frozen spare emergency ones? Around 3 of our dinners were served, but then another table had thier service, whilst we waited for the remaining dinners to arrive. Again just poor kitchen, service and planning. One of our dinners was wrong and was swapped. There was no difference in size between full or half portions, none whatsoever. Those with the beef all said it was cold, plates were cold, veg was tepid, meat was tough, cut from God knows what but not one joint. The gravy was the only tasty thing. And for £15.75 per dinner they should be ashamed. Two of our guests were late and this had been explained and expected and their dinner had at least hit the microwave so were hotter than anything seen previously. Seems there are a few reviews on here all from the same song sheet, surely that tells the owners something? Our bill was actually for another table, again just poor organisation, but this worked £'s in our favour by some margin. To be fair if I was paying the bill I would have not paid in full. 4 of us went home and cooked sasauge and chips as we were still hungry. This used to be a good pub with good food. Won't be going back.

The review by Karenbrannen is totally wrong. I am a customer and a witness to what went on and I can’t reply directly to the review, for some reason. Everything in that review is wrong on all level’s. They didn’t pay for anything and gave the staff and the owner a horrible time. Their behaviour forced another 2 table’s to leave. Staff here are always amazing and so is the food. Don’t always go by bad review’s because it’s never the full story. We,like the other table, were informed of a wait that’s longer than usual and it was only by a few minute’s. The food was sublime and the service was fantastic. Everything is worth paying for. I had a curry here last night and it’s was very good. Freshly made from scratch. I highly recommend this place. Was looking forward to a quality meal as my wife and I celebrated our anniversary but was left totally disappointed. Pub has a nice village feel to it and the restaurant is small but cosy looking. Menu looked inviting and I ordered the lamb burger with my wife having the Tai green curry which she enjoyed (7/10) but I was let down by the burger and the massive chunky tasteless chips (3/10) The sticky toffee pudding was nice but not worth the £7 it cost. Overall we paid £55.35 which included a G&T & a pint of John Smiths. Will not return.

I was a guest at a birthday party of eight people. The table was booked a few weeks ago as it is normally a firm favourite. Tonight started off reasonably well, we arrived at 7pm but it was almost 9pm when the food eventually arrived, after we had to pursue the staff. The place had a few tables of two and they were all being looked after despite following us in. One of the guests had a particularly bad tough steak. When a complaint was made the response was not good, I was very surprised at the attitude, not rude but not interested either and no offer of anything to help smooth things. When the host went to pay she asked for compensation off the bill for the bad steak and was met with quite an outburst of poor behaviour. Don't think we'll be back anytime soon. The food otherwise was OK but very expensive for what it actually was. The poor service and unreasonably long wait was just not good enough.Add that to the bad management and things were always going to end badly, which it did.

Decided to treat our elderly mother to Sunday lunch. Never Again! We had pre-booked a table for 1:00 but ONE HOUR later, we were still waiting for our food. The room was freezing cold - our 86 year old mother had to keep her coat on at the table. Eventually we enquired at the bar why the food was taking so long, only to be stared at blankly by a young lad who seemed a bit clueless! The food eventually arrived, but was lukewarm and went cold before we finished it. The meat was okay but the (cold) dish of green veg. Was underwhelming to say the least. You had to search for the two small pieces of broccoli amongst the limp cabbage leaves. All in all, very disappointing for the quite expensive £12:50 price for one course. They need to do better with so much competition around. Won’t be back anytime soon.

Two plates of scampi and chips last night. A pile of lukewarm undercooked thin-cut frozen chips; half a dozen small scampi pieces and a scoop of mashed-up frozen peas served by a bored-looking youth. And a Sarsen's vinegar bottle plonked on the table. The charge was £20. After tax, that rotten meal cost me two hours' work! Hardly believable that such an expensive yet unforgivably poor bar meal is availalble in 2019.

Decided to treat the family for mid week tea out, however, we were all bitterly disappointed and left having to make tea and toast when we got home.We all ordered fish and chips thinking it would be a really good reliable choice of meal. How wrong could we have been!! Our food arrived, minted peas were only luke warm on the plate, chunky chips were like last weeks, rock hard and pushed 'well done' to the limit !! The tartar sauce was dolloped on the plate should really have been served in a ramekin, as personally I don't like it and it spoilt the meal. Fish was ok but have had much better. The waitress asked if everything was OK to which we replied no, relaying our disappointment. She brought us fresh chips but to be honest we were all too disappointed to enjoy them by then. Credit to the pub they did not charge us for the meal but the overall experience will make us think twice about returning.

We are from Canada and went to the Spread Eagle for dinner with friends/relatives who live nearby. It was very busy and crowded (Friday night) but we found a table and had had good food from a huge bar menu. I had classic fish and chips - absolutely excellent the best I have had in years. Should be expected in North Shields, of course, but not always realized. The food came quite quickly given the number of diners and the one server seemed to be working the bar as well as the restaurant. Friendly and efficient. A good quantity of wine and was consumed between the 4 of us - not inexpensive, but not outrageous. Good pub atmosphere. We would certainly go back again and often if we lived in the area.

Each Thursday me and my sister like to have a nice lunch out. We were in the area of this pub and thought we’d give it a go... we were greeted as soon as we entered by a blonde lady who told us to pick a seat and she came over and asked which drinks we’d like. She was so polite and friendly. She gave us the lunch menu and left us to chose whilst we enjoyed our drinks. The pub decor is lovely with tables and benches to choose from with comfy cushions. There was another couple sitting opposite us with a well behaved dog which we didn’t notice until we were leaving so it obviously allows dogs. We ordered scampi and a fish and chips. Both were lovely and of a good size. The tartare sauce was very nice and possibly home made. The fish and the scampi was very fresh and the chips were amazing!! I’d come back purely for them! Great service lovely pub atmosphere and fab food. The only criticism I could give was I’d of liked proper mushy peas however I’d definitely return and recommend!

We have been regular customers here for nearly 4 years, tonight i complained about my meal for the first time as we have always enjoyed the food. However, the complaint was not handled particularly well in my opinion, in a nut shell it consisted of, you’ve eaten most of your meal so will need to pay if you want something else!! most of my steak was in a tissue on the table! I’d eaten some chips, masticated the steak, spat it out and ate half a tomato all for £22 with a thin watery peppercorn sauce !!! i asked for the manager who then said he’d take the meal off the bill, which was great, but was closely followed with, i didn’t see your plate returned but chef said you’d eaten most of it and have you actually had rib eye before? I’m not sure he could have been more condescending if he’d tried! i asked him to leave it there and asked for the bill! The bill then arrived with additional drinks added which we did not order! coincidence i’m not so sure. Not impressed in any way at my interrogation and a spoilt family meal!

The pub is just small and customers were having to walk around the large dog to get to the bar area after the second bark we decided not to stay for food. I think the dog policy by letting dogs in this place where people come to relax and eat is wrong as the pub/ restaurant does not have a lot of space also l do not wish to dine amongst other people's pets . It is a shame but will 3 dogs soon become 6 . Does the proprietor want to be a serious eateries or just a place for local dog owners to call in for a drink. Christmas Tyne, Mistletoe & Family visits...etc.... Went to the 'Spread' for the Christmas meal with his folks which is sort of a tradition, rather like Christmas Crackers it wouldnt be Christmas without visiting and with rather better surprises than the Tom Smiths! This is a lovely pub, cosy, homely and inviting - a comfortable local (unfortunately about 200 miles away but there you go!).. The team are great, friendly (like family!) and the food is superb! I would never normally go for sausage and mash, and didnt - I went for the Toulouse sausage and swapped the mash for sweet potato fries.. with peas, beans and mangetout and THE best gravy (or red wine reduction as the other half keeps reminding me!) I have ever had! Like melted chocolate it was thick, syrupy and unctuous - so good I had another jug - a superb dish and remarkable value for money! I then had the cheesecake (with liquorice and caramel ice cream - off piste but there you go!).. deconstructed and devoured! The other half had fish and sticky toffee pudding (2 courses!) and other stuff, there was some tapas floating and a very well decorated tree... lovely place, great food and superb service - a great place to pass the Tyne (see what I did there!)... xx

I had no idea that this pub (or nearly every pub for that matter) paid so much attention to their food. The menu changes as often as it has to depending on what looks good in the shops and markets. The bar area has a selection of well kept real ales as well.Best to book ahead but it is certainly one I would go back to.

Party of 8 adults plus baby were comfortably accommodated, plenty of space not crowded together. No complaints from anyone, all stating it was one of the better Sunday meals had from establishments in the area. Viewed as better than the Shiremoor Farm, The Cannon at Earsdon and The Beehive all of which do good food. Price wise it was value for money, beers good, wine good, baby chair provided. Would recommend without hesitation.

Really enjoyed the recent tasting evening. Both food and wines were of a very high standard representing very good value for money. Downside, fruit gin in the prossecco, the main course lamb lacked flavour and paper napkins for dinner? This is the reason I can only give 9 out of 10 for the evening. I am already looking forward to the next and would advise everyone to give the Spread Eagle a try.

The wife and I went for lunch one Friday. I had the burger which wasn't cheap at £10.50, when good burgers can be found at our local at 2 for £10. The French fries were salty and the burger so much chili in that my tongue was stinging. My wife had a beef sandwich and they had soaked the bread in gravy so it was soggy. We were there one and a half hours and we couldn't see anyone else come into the pub. On the plus side the restaurant was very nicely furnished.

A lovely warm place to visit but when we paid for a buffet at £8.50! a head for 22 people and only get a small table of a couple of plates of sandwiches, a bowl if coleslaw a couple if bowls of cold fries and a bowl of sausage rolls is disgusting! i didn't complain there or then as it was a funeral and everyone was emotional but other than that friendly staff and a nicely decorated pub :-) just dont go if your planning a buffet.

We revisited this restaurant after the big refurbishment and the décor is lovely and now has added seating for the restaurant which is cosy but there is nothing to absorb the noise as it gets noisy when full. The food has gone really fancy for my liking which I found it hard to find something to have without having to make alterations i.e. salmon with cockle and mussel cream sauce - too many flavours together for my taste but hey others may love it. The other was sticky toffee pudding, salted caramel sauce and liquorice ice cream. I personally love liquorice but not ice cream. The presentation of the food was lovely and the staff could not have been any more helpful. You can now organise Private Dining if so required but if you were taking elderly people they would like more home cooked meals not all "fine dining"

Oh dear - from start to finish the food disappointed us all. Always one to try we gave Hake Crumble a go - it was disgusting and the taste of salt was over powering. We couldn't finish it and complained - we were told someone else had already complained of the salt - which begs the question why wasn't it removed - clearly something went wrong in the kitchen. Also tried the salmon smoked in gin - but no flavour other than salmon here. Main courses were poor. Hake stew was overpowered by too much pesto. Mince and dumplings - dumpling was hard and solid not exactly a light fluffy offering. Not enough mince - completely disappointing. Worst was the burger which contained a piece of sharp, hard broken off plastic. Needless to say we didn't pay for the Hake starters or burger but I left feeling hungry. Won't be returning.

We held a funeral reception here after looking at the refurbished pub. Very nice surroundings, tasty wine, interesting nibbles. But the price of the food for the wake?!!??? We spent around £300 for 40 people and the whole amount fitted on a small table. Two plates of gourmet toasties, a very small gourmet black pudding sausage roll each, one bowl of coleslaw, 3 small bowls of pomme frites. It was £8.50 a head but honestly there was probably enough served to accommadate 10 - 15 people with small appetites. They must have made £270 profit just from the food. Really disappointed by the catering but the pub itself is beautifully decorated.

So disappointed - this was our second visit since the pubs refurb which is lovely. Our first visit was a complete disaster as there was no chef - we weren't informed of this until we complained about our food!!!!!! The kitchen should have been closed as the meal we were served was inedible. We decided to give it another try on word of mouth from friends. Unfortunately it was not up to standard - the fish and chips were truly the worst we have ever had. Two small pieces of fish (watery and very like bought in oven fish) with skinny chips (frozen)and a pot of tartare sauce!!!! What happened to home made chips and mushy peas!!!!!!! The menu is by no means extensive - all the more reason to expect good quality home cooked food. Sorry we will not be returning - overpriced pub grub.

This recently refurbished gastro pub has it all. The welcome is second to none by Claire ( restaurant )and her Dad David ( bar). My party all had traditional roast beef but there is nothing traditional about what is served. The meat was succulent, the vegetables were lovely and the potatoes, both mashed and roast were divine. it leaves you with just enough room for a delicious home made pudding. Can't wait to go back - maybe we'll try the Monday Curry Night.

Delighted to see this pub rejuvenated with love and care by Claire. I now have a local pub with a perfect ambience, tunes and fantastic food! The new decor and refurbishment is stylish and warm, with the new addition of a conservatory. The attention to detail from the beautiful flowers to the handpicked wines is testament to the owners supporting local businesses and creating a superb customer experience in all areas. I have visited for drinks, lunch and dinner on 3 occasions so far, each time the menu has been well thought out, top quality, taste and seasonally sourced. I look forward to seeing the good word spread locally and regionally.

A warm welcome on arrival. A daily limited menu which meant the ingredients were fresh. Both the baked crab and the ham terrine were delicious, followed by the equally good shin of beef and tempura monkfish in a delicate light batter. the accompanying vegetables were well chosen and cooked. The stir fry vegetables nicely al dente and as offered the Thai curry was served on the side so as not to drown the vegetables or make the tempura batter soggy. The lemon posset could not have been better either. We were offered a reasonably wide wine list, which unusually for a pub had several good French wines at affordable prices. We will be back often if the standard is always this good.

We visited this place several years ago. We were not impressed. It was like a locals tatty bar. But having driven past on a recent occasion we decided to give it a try. We were very impressed. It has been extended and really smartened up. Had 4 real ales on, and the ones that we tried were in good condition and served at the correct temperature. So we arranged a second visit and all went well again. We were not in a position to eat on this occasion, so we carefully monitored the food which was being served to nearby customers. We must say it looked well up to standard and not overpriced. Has all the usual drinks in so well worth a visit by anybody.

We decided on this venue as a spur of the moment decision on passing in the car and word of mouth recommendations. On arrival I couldn't believe the transformation of the place as it has been many years prior that I last visited. We were greeted and seated by a lovely, polite, tall, well presented lady who offered us a range of choices on drinks and gave us ours menus after seating us in a warm and pleasant extension of the restaurant on the side of the bar area. The whole place was beautifully decorated, clean and well furnished. After looking at the menu we decided on a vegetarian option and sausage and mash both being by far the cheapest things on the menu and we're still pricey for pub food £8 each. The portions sizes were just adequate and very tasty but still left plenty of room for desserts. The drinks were however reasonably priced. The clientele looked lovely local people. We had to wait or keep going to the bar far further drinks but overall it was very nice and we will return again one day.

Visited the spread eagle with friends after hearing so many good reports and we weren't disappointed, absolutely fab new refurbishment bringing the charm of this old pub back to life still had the same old charm with the wooden bar, beams and wooden floor tastefully decorated with twinkly candle light tables and "CLEAN" we wouldn't have set foot in this place a few years ago after an extremely bad experience. we had booked a table and were promptly greeted and sat at our table with drinks in front of us within 5-10 mins even though the place was rammed. We were seated in the new part of the pub which is absolutely gorgeous and has large doors out to the pretty new patio area , huge improvement! I had the potato and black pudding starter with homemade brown sauce delicious, while the others had the mackerel salad which was to die for. For my main course I had the sirloin steak which melted in the mouth the sauce that came with the steak was unbelievable, my partner had the lamb rump which again was beautiful cooked to perfection our friends both had the scallops delightful, and all very reasonably priced, I've paid far more at Italian restaurants and others alike for food no where near this standard, would highly recommend this place the new owners are clearly very passionate and have done a very loving and sympathetic renovation great food excellent selection of drinks lovely staff fantastic atmosphere an absolute must. The only down side is I wish I had more time off to visit this place, fab!, we will be back.

The Spread Eagle is a nicely decorated traditional pub with a relatively plain dining room. Good parking and a nice atmosphere though. The staff are exceptional and there is a a modern informal menu with items such as white onion and fennel soup, king prawns, chorizo scotch egg, confit of duck with lentils, herb crusted vegetable stew. All of it very good to excellent and reasonably priced.Although I said the dining room was plain it it is notably comfortable with plenty of room. Great list of desserts too, the best of which was frozen peanut butter mouse, very nice indeed.I am going to visit as often as I can.

We have visited today after a walk on the beach we had a wet sandy dog with us but was still welcomed with open arms (well behaved dog allowed downstairs) had coffee and cake which was amazing but my far the best part of our visit was the customer service we received from a lovley lady called Deborah. On sitting and eating she continued to give the same amazing customer service to everyone that followed us through the door just how you should be treated wherever you go so thank you Deborah you are a real credit to the business 😁
