Our WI booked the whole of Dil and the Bear for afternoon tea. It was a great afternoon. The staff were excellent. The food was delicious and boxes were provided for anything left over. I find it hard to go to places as I'm vegan but they were very accommodating and can honestly say I would recommend it to anyone.

I have visited the Dil&Bear three times over the last 10 days: once for lunch & twice for coffee & cake. I found the staff to be terribly hospitality & genuinely kind people each time to me & my guest, food was delicious 😋, well presented ,great choice of dishes & reasonably priced . Catered for all needs. Yes I will certainly be revisting.

Delightful spot and pleased to get in on a second time as previously a few months prior, at 1030 breakfast was stopping as they were running out. I had the small breakfast ( great to have this on a menu) and hubby the veggie one. Lovely quality and very tasty, thank you. Took friends to Riley’s this weekend and we said with their unfriendly service and ok but pricy food how much we preferred the experience at Dill and Bear!

Popped in for an opportune breakfast and the decor and ambiance is lovely - great start. Full English and tea - what can go wrong? Well for me plenty unfortunately. Firstly the tea - again nicely presented but quite a small pot. So only 1 cup. Bit stingy with a full breakfast. Tea (and water) is cheap - please buy bigger pots or give free refills? Onto the breakfast. Asked for sauce - and was given a sachet. In such an artisan place - why not a bottle or a tub. And give more. Again - why so stingy? Onto the beans - why not Heinz? Everyone loves Heinz. Your beans may be homemade, but a poor substitute I’m afraid. Similar for the hash - not a hash brown but potato chunks and onion. Nicely paprika’d but much more onion than potato. Lastly on the negatives - the egg was solo and very small. Certainly not a “large”. On the positive side- the bread was lovely and perfectly toasted and the sausages and bacon were tasty. Sausages underdone for my preference, but that’s a personal choice I’m aware. So overall - a bit too much style over substance. Good and bad bits, but I left disappointed. Was hoping to be “stuffed” and I’m not Sorry.

We attended at 4.20pm on a mid-week day and were turned away. Two young female staff said they were cleaning down, so were closed. (It was quite busy inside and there were plenty of other people sat inside at tables). They advertise that they are open until 5pm! If you are going to start cleaning down 40 minutes prior to closing it may be helpful to advertise that fact instead of wasting peoples time saying you are open until 5pm! Disappointing!

Have walked past this little gem hundreds of times before yet never crossed the threshold. Turns out that was an error on my part as it is a sweet place great coffee, what looks to be canny food and all delivered by pleasant, friendly people. My wife and I have taken to visiting on a Sunday morning, using it as a break in our morning constitutional. It’s a little tight inside but if the weather holds it’s pleasant to sit outdoors. Nice atmosphere and you are always made to feel welcome. Don’t wait to discover this place, it’s all good.

Our favourite place where we have gone regularly for years, always lovely staff with no complaints, but noticed today how dirty the toilet is starting to look,(womens) needs a new clean toilet seat thick dust covers the light and mirrors, all areas need a really good scrub down including the floor and a lick of new paint would go a long way to bringing it back to the best coffee and food place in tynemouth.

A lovely intimate cafe serving excellent salads and sandwiches. I had a delightful warm bagel with an omelette and bacon filling. Sounds bizarre but it really was fantastic. Lots of excellent cakes to choose from too - again, some unknown surprises but also great. And the coffee too was good (though there's stiff competition in these parts). Perhaps a little pricey but well worth your time for something slightly different in a relaxed and intimate atmosphere (outdoor seating also available).

Been here a few times and always enjoyed it. Today however, ordered whipped feta with roasted beetroot and was literally presented with a bowl of liquid/like milk with some packet beetroot chopped on the top. This was not whipped feta nor roasted beetroot and in my mind should not have been served. For £11 it was pretty unacceptable. Will think twice before eating here again :(

Mixed review from me. Visited with my mam and little boy. We found a table and were asked to leave pushchair in the front. No problem....just took a while to decamp everything. Booster seat provided for my little boy. Grand. Went and sat down....looked at menu. Decided what we wanted.... It was 11.40. Breakfast ends 11.30.. No probs....we will pick off the lunch menu...my mam then tried to order. They refused to even take the order til 12. Wouldn't ring it up and put it in the kitchen to be done at 12.....🤷‍♀️ in the wait...Decided it was probably a good time for a nappy change for wee man...which I then had to do on the floor of the toilet as no facilities. (Which I find odd given they provide Booster seats and a kids menu). Food was slightly expensive. But it was a very tasty grilled cheese sandwich. Staff were friendly enough, but I do wish they had alerted us to the fact they were "between services" befor3 I had decamped everything from my sons buggy, settled him in a Booster seat etc. However, as mentioned. Food was delicious.

Full English made for a very happy husband and Coconut French Toast with roasted spiced pineapple , toasted pecans, yoghurt and drizzled with maple syrup was a delight. Great coffee too. There looks to be a wonderful cake selection which means undoubtedly we will be returning soon and the staff were friendly and welcoming .

MORE AT TripAdvisor

DIl & the Bear is a well regimented and efficient pleasant café serving beverages, pastries, quality cakes, tasty breakfasts and imaginative lunches. First find a seat, decide what you want, return to the counter to order and pay. Take-aways may be ordered directly at the counter where high stools are available at the bar opposite for waiting. Dil now only accepts card payment, they accept neither cash nor cheques. The usual selection of coffees is made by the barista staff and food is cooked in a small kitchen at the rear. The pastries and cakes are homemade and are regularly featured on Dil’s Facebook page. A selection of cold drinks is available. Menus are available on clip boards beside the counter for perusal at your table and a list of specials is written up each day. The café is closed on Mondays except sometimes when Monday is a bank holiday then the café is closed on Tuesday instead (Usually notified on Facebook). Prices are moderate to high but reasonable. There is additional seating on the pavement under cover of an awning. Dogs are allowed outside but not at the inside tables. Blankets are offered for cold days. There is a toilet at the rear opposite the kitchen. When the café is busy it can be difficult to obtain a table without going all the way inside seeking a free seat. In these circumstances, we find it necessary to ask the knowledgeable staff if there are any tables free rather than mount a full-scale expedition to locate one. Tap water may be obtained by customers at a service point opposite the counter on a strictly self-service basis. Beware: breakfasts may only be ordered up to 11:30 while lunches may only be ordered from 12:00. The staff are helpful, kind, and pleasant and customers ordering breakfasts or lunches may negotiate substitution items in most cases.

Whitley Bay branch: Let’s start by saying that the food is always really delicious. The salad bowls are amazing, and the children always find a sandwich they’ll enjoy. Also, a great drinks list. We will be back. Little bit of feedback though, I always feel rather rushed. Lunch should be a pleasurable experience that one lingers over, and really enjoys (unless of course the customer is in a rush and asks for it to come quickly). Here, I usually find that the food arrives very swiftly, so swiftly that the drinks have never arrived by the time the food is placed on the table. I’d love to be able to enjoy my drink for a while, exchange news, catch up, before the food is put down. Your way does make me feel a bit like you want me to eat up and move on.

During lockdown I emailed them asking if the voucher would be honoured after lockdown. Lovely reply from Dil honouring the voucher. I tried, last week, to book only to be told they wouldn’t honour the voucher. Really bad customer service and I’ll certainly not be visiting either of their cafes/tea rooms.

My daughter and I wanted to try the Whitley Bay cafe for coffee. The inside, of what used to be the old station, is lovely. They have an outdoor area which is very popular due to covid 19 and initially we were the only ones inside as everyone else seemed to be outside. It took a while to be served and only when I asked. My daughter noticed on one of the menus that they will not just serve drinks on their own - you have to order food! They state this is to do with covid 19 and restricted seating but have never come across this in any other cafe since covid started. So we had cake and it was very yummy. Sadly this was let down by coffee that was not hot. I should have said something but all the staff seemed to be running around dealing with the full outdoor space. We were disappointed with our all round experience as my daughter also wanted to pay with cash and it was cards only. They need to put big signs outside saying that they don’t serve drinks without food and also a card only sign. It wastes everybody’s time if you don’t find out this information until you are seated. When we were leaving there was someone complaining about something being cold so maybe that’s an area for them to look at. We found it quite pricey for coffee and cake so probably wouldn’t go back although they had an interesting lunch menu which seemed reasonably priced so who knows we may give it another go sometime.

It took ages to come also so my son had finished his by the time mine arrived. Called in for a coffee. The staff are quite abrupt and it was unnecessarily rude. They didn’t serve anything my child would have and was refused to allow them what I had for them. Fair enough- but politeness in their response costs nothing. As we had dared to ask then the service was really quite bad. And we felt like our custom was not wanted. And everyone had a track and trace on their table- we weren’t offered one and then other were paying at their table. We were told to pay at the counter. People coming out whilst I stood outside with my 3 year old in the cold commented how abrupt and rude they were as there were lots of people going in to try and get a table for coffee due to weather - I wouldn’t have come back in had we not ordered. Anyway, rude. Abrupt and the coffee was really quite bitter. No real atmosphere. It’s actually the service that makes people come back. We all said we wouldn’t come back and would go elsewhere. A smile and generally being courteous and nice costs nothing! Didn’t even acknowledge us either on leaving. Thanks for your custom goes a long way too! Won’t be back.

Yesterday [29th October 2019] we called into this coffee shop for tea and cake. the young woman that served us around 11am was not the most friendly for this type of business but i didnt worry too much, just thought perhaps she needed to go on a course etc. I duly ordered tea for two, and cake! anyhow the cakes were delivered to our table by a young man who seemed friendlier than the woman on the front counter. hot drinks kept coming out but alas not to our table. after ten minutes I asked where our tea was. The young man snapped "You didnt order any!" I said we did, he again snapped "you didn't!" so off I trotted to the front counter to ask the same question, where were our drinks? thereby the aforesaid young woman proceeded to argue with me saying I hadnt ordered any. You get the picture... I suggested she stopped arguing but clearly she had zero people skills. my partner had clearly heard me order drinks so she was the only person who had not. I asked for my money back and we left without any refreshment. So if you like to give your money to a coffee shop that doesnt listen and indeed argues in an agressive manner towards paying customers, then please do go and enjoy. me...we went for fish and chips at North Shields where we finally got our CUP OF TEA!!

However, the thing that I really felt was very poor service was when we were asked if we would like sauce and were presented with an upside down empty bottle, I asked if I could have a bottle with sauce in only to be given another upside down empty bottle, there was a coop across the road surely one of them could have nipped across and changed it, after all the female staff member sat on the window ledge the entire time we were there. Went for a late lunch and found this lovely little place. Too windy to sit outside so found a table and scanned the menu. Was pleased with the range of food available and chose the breakfast pie. Coffees came within minutes but had a fair wait for the food by which time the coffee was gone. When the food turned up it was amazing, served with mixed beans in a spicy tomato sauce. Will be back next time I’m up that way

Having been here a number of times in the past I went along today to grab a coffee and cake with my new baby. Asked for some help to lift the pram to one of the tables and was given an abrupt no from one of the servers. She stated that there was no room for prams and it would be a hazard. Whilst I understand this I was quite upset by the tone of the response from the server and the lack of options then offered to allow me to sit for a while.

Hubby and I were just passing by when we just fancied a decent cuppa! And maybe a little something to go with it? Wow!!! When we stepped inside a quirky yet warm and welcoming, we just had to try some of the delightful cakes on display. We had a pot of tea each and hubby and I both had a cherry & Coconut scone, which was really really divine! The little teapots came with quirky individual tea cosy, all hand made, a really nice touch we thought. Again the staff were friendly and helpful. Even the locals all seemed so friendly, it was lovely. They all seemed to enjoy a bit of banter!

Called in with friends on our journey North, needed something to alleviate the hunger pangs so opted for the tomato & basil soup with bread & a frothy latte, was really tasty, plenty of it & hot until I finished. Liked the quirky little tea cosy for the teapot, friend order the fish fillet sandwich from the kids menu which was plentiful.

I chose the sourdough toast with tapanade and roasted vegetables from the specials board, my friends had the cauliflower wrap and feta fatoush salad and iced coffees as it was a sunny day. They were all delicious. The staff were polite and helpful even though it was busy on a hot bank holiday Monday, they offered vegetarian or vegan options for the dishes with meat (they also do gluten free choices if you ask). We were all too full to try the cakes that looked amazing . Well worth a visit if you’re in Tynemouth - tucked away beside the Cumberland Arms.

Stopped off for a coffee and scone. First time I’ve visited and nicely impressed. Very clean, good seating, nice staff and the coffee was very good as was the scone. Being nosy watched what other people were having and it all looked good. Will visit again.

What a lovely little cafe, well appointed in differing modes of decoration with some good ideas with lighting. Ordered food and drinks and drinks were promptly served, very good cappuccino and hot which is lacking at a lot of places that serve coffee. Food was excellent, the only small point I have is that the cafe was quiet but it took nearly 20 mins for one of the plates of food to arrive. When it arrived it was however delicious. Will be back next time I’m in Tynemouth for sure.

I do love this cafe but today, the coffee as always perfect but my scone which was supposed to be cranberry and white chocolate, seemed just like a sultana scone. It was disappointing and feel the white chocolate avoided the mix in my scone and no taste of cranberry. I did mention this to the waitress, she just said they were the only fruit based scone and sorry about it. However next time I go will revert to the cakes but today no Red Velvet Cake which is a favourite and this is why I opted for the scone.

Lovely mid morning brunch with family. The humble English breakfast pimped with homemade baked beans, lovely herb sausages and sumptuous black pudding or perhaps a hash brown bowl, topped with avocado and egg or even eggs benedict eggs cooked to order. Simply lovely and the kids sweet tooth is equally catered for. Lovely service, come early to get a seat as unsurprisingly they get busy.

Do not want to pay £15 for the pleasure of sitting in a loud, narrow cafe, with wailing music, uncomfortable chairs, unimpressive vegan options and entirely rude service. If you’re charging that much, at least take orders at tables.

Spent Easter weekend in Tynemouth and having been to Dills last year, decided we would have our Easter Saturday breakfast here. Luckily we arrived before 9.30am, had we arrived later we'd have struggled to find a seat because rightly so it was heaving. We also went back for breakfast on Easter Monday before we headed home and again it filled up really quickly. The breakfast pie was AMAZING. Coffee consistently great, delightful staff and fabulous food. We will return!!

This a lovely place with lots of cakes to look at and wish you could eat them all. It's very popular at weekends and can be hard to get a table as there is limited seating. As a result it's not a place to sit and relax for too long as it can be quite cramped.

I've visited this place more than I can count. It has been the "go-to" place post Tynemouth Market exploring (which happens on the weekends at the Metro Station) and I've never been disappointed. Whether it's been breakfast, lunch, or just cake and coffee, Dil and Bear has always managed to come through with really good food. I've enjoyed their menu options with many classic British dishes, but also has options with a global influence. My favourites have been the English breakfast, Breakfast pie, their pastries, and homemade cakes. Your teas also always come with a small tea pot and a cute tea cozy. They've thought of lots of cute details in the way things are served, and that makes it fun and different from other places.

We visited today and brought along our little dog who is always with us and sits under the table. Unfortunately we were told we could no longer bring pooches in (even dinky ones like ours). I’m guessing it’s because of the debate on here. It’s a real shame because it will put us off visiting on chilly days but more than happy to wrap up warm and sit outside in okay/good weather like today if there are no smokers sat outside. Staff as always were friendly and cakes were delicious.

My partner and I arrived for breakfast at Dil and the Bear after a wander around the markets. Food was delicious - breakfast pie for him, breakfast mezze for me. A tad expensive considering the size/quantity of food. Only niggle was the smoothie my partner ordered, expensive considering the glass was 3/4 full and almost half was foam! Staff were lovely though, food v.tasty and great atmosphere on a busy Sunday morning!

Visited this morning and had left my dog in the car as I wasnt sure whether this was a dog friendly place. As I walked up I noticed another customer ahead with a pug going in so I checked with the girl behind the till who said small dogs were welcome. I thought it was a bit odd but said ok mine's quite small (a small well behaved whippet) so great I'll get her. It was only when I went to sit at a table that I was rudely informed that my dog was not welcome, unless she would fit under the table. I explained she would stay right by me and be in no ones way. Meanwhile the pug was visibly not under the table... The person continued to make me feel very unwelcome telling me id have to sit outside so I decided to leave and spend my money across the street where they have a clear dog friendly policy. I don't mind if a place isn't dog friendly but this was ridiculous and the person who spoke with me had such a terrible attitude. Must only be for dogs whose owners get on well with the management. Avoid.
