Lovely friendly pub in a fabulous setting. Great choice of drink we tried the Silly Moo Cider and icebreaker Pale Ale which were both excellent. Great wine list and choice of spirits also. Food was superb all home cooked. Salt n Pepper squid cooked perfectly with tasty accompaniments. Mains were risotto which was exceptional and tuna steak again cooked perfectly with a lovely salad. Too full for deserts unfortunately because the desert menu looked delicious . We were also allowed to park our Motorhome so we could really enjoy both of us having a drink. Will definitely be back. All the staff went out of their way to provide a friendly welcome & great service. Thank you 🙏

Our first visit to this country pub and I think it will be our last. Sat down at 2.30pm for Sunday lunch and our drinks order was taken pretty quickly followed by our food order. We had ordered roasts with no starters. Just over 60 mins later had to ask the waitress where our food was. She was very apologetic and stated our order had not gone through and she would put it through again. The manageress/owner did offer us a free round of drinks and also apologised. However, the point of this poor review is that almost 40 mins after complaining our food had still not arrived and I had to ask again where it was. It then turned up within a few minutes but we had been waiting one and three quarter hours for a plate of roast dinner which you can't tell me was almost all prepared and just needed plating up. To be left another 40mins after complaining was very poor. The food was OK but as we were all so hungry we would have eaten anything.

We booked a table for Sunday lunch at 1.30pm. We were shown to our table and given our menus. We made our choices and received our drinks fairly quickly. Only one of us was having a starter but after almost an hour we had finished our drinks and waited for the starter …. We weren’t asked if we would like more drinks so whilst we went up to the bar area to order a drink, the waitress advised that ‘the starter had been forgotten’ .. it then arrived a few minutes later then the mains subsequently followed. Meals were average. I appreciate it was a nice day and the garden was busy but maybe they should prioritise booked tables and advise customers if there is a wait for food. Being fairly local we have been before and have had various experiences. Incidentally, we were surprised to see the area which was the restaurant, is now a craft and niknak shop, so seating is now significantly reduced,

We were at The Sportsman at lunchtime today for our Grandson’s first Birthday party. What a superb venue, the owners decorated the area in a wildlife theme & made it so special with balloons, a magnificent backdrop, cushions & themed tableware. The ambience & buffet food was first class, delicious homemade sandwiches, sausage rolls & lots of other nibbly bits which were so fresh & tasty. As for the rocky road cakes, they were the best that I have ever tasted. The welcome we received was second to none & each member of staff could not do enough to help, they are a superb team. Such a great place for a celebration, meal, special occasion or a drink, you will not be disappointed, first class in every way. Thank you Olivia, Matt & the staff, we can’t wait for our next visit.

We booked our table well in advance as we know they are busy. Upon arrival the fires were roaring and the atmosphere was very cozy & welcoming. On the bar were pork pies, sausage rolls, crisps, dips and even dog snacks. A lovely addition. The staff were full of smiles and the service at the table and at the bar was very efficient. Sometimes we have been to busy places and the wait time to be served can be painfully long. We ordered our drink and it was bought to our table in minutes. We ordered the roast pork and roast beef. Extra dish of pigs in blankets and cauliflower cheese. The food arrived hot and it was a delight to eat. Everything seemed freshly prepared and cooked. The meats was tender, succulent and delicious. The crackling was perfect. Thin light and super crispy. We have good appetites and struggled to eat it all. A real Sunday roast treat if you don’t want to cook. There were large gatherings there and we noticed how efficiently they were served also. Would definitely recommend the food at The Sportsman.

We’re local but hadn’t been for a long time. As we were passing we decided to call in for lunch and were very glad we did. We were early on a lunchtime and were seated near to one of the fires as it was really cold outside. We had the Welsh rarebit with bacon and eggs extras, plus the lamb’s liver with mash and onion gravy. Both dishes were served quickly, were very tasty, and piping hot. We decided we’d make the effort to come back again soon, especially as the service was efficient and friendly. Overall a very nice lunch although my pint of Harveys wasn’t brilliant. It wasn’t bad and didn’t warrant being sent back but i hope it’s better next time.

Our first visit to the Sportsman for Sunday lunch today was a very memorable one. Having seen roast dinners arrive at other tables we just had to indulge. Before we get to that though, I have to mention how welcoming and accommodating the restaurant team were. They were also never far away to help us with refills and enjoy the occasion. The restaurant itself was very spacious, warm and comfortable enough that we were able to enjoy a long, enjoyable visit. Now we get to the food. On top of the usual roast chicken and beef offerings were also pork and lamb, and some of us chose to go for a mix. I had beef and lamb. Roasts come with veggies, roast potatoes, a large Yorkshire pud, and lots of gravy. Note: chicken can’t be mixed due to it being in large pieces. We also chose to add extra sides of cauliflower, cheese and piggies in blankets. The food arrived after a little while, but we were busy chatting anyway, enjoying the atmosphere. The plates arrived hot, and they both looked and tasted amazing. If you have a healthy appetite and a taste for good food, you definitely won’t be disappointed. Go there soon!! Next time we must try dining in one of the outside wood cabins for a more personal surrounding. They looked great!!

We thought we would go for a mid week lunch as we are still on holiday. We walk 45 minutes to get there (along the pretty circular walking path) so don’t have time to go there as often as we would like as the walk back is another 45 minutes and it’s just finding the time! The starter of calamari was not available but there was whitebait instead which was lovely and had a spicy kick to the seasoning. The burgers were still amazing. GF bun available. Perfectly cooked. So tender and tasty. Fries not over seasoned and not too much rosemary. Lovely. Pudding of treacle tartlet was really a change from a treacle tart. Great lunch. Lovely G & T with Brighton Gin, Brighton rock and Mediterranean gin. Thank you to the bar lady who recommend this for me to try.

Rang up on a Sunday morning on the off chance of booking lunch for 4 adults. Immediately friendly and helpful, they managed to squeeze us into one of their external 'dining pods' (a series of separate, private dining facilities close to the main restaurant) provided we were clear by 2.45pm to allow them to set up for the next booking (more than enough time for us). Quiet, clean and comfortable, with just a gentle burble of background music from the speaker, it was a lovely relaxing place to eat and chat. As we did have a well behaved, but noisy, 1 year old with us, not having to worry about inflicting him on other diners was a welcome relief too. Service was quick, attentive and efficient, and the food truly excellent (including two of the nicest salad and soup combo's we ever had in any pub). Only on leaving did we realise how busy they actually were, all of which makes our service even more impressive. Would go out of my way to come here again next time we are in the Brighton area.

Quiet lunchtime so plenty of availability and staff. On arrival told to sit down and someone would be over with a menu and to take our drinks order. Sat down and waited and waited. Staff saw we were waiting whilst they were taking another tables order. We waited for the staff to finish taking that tables order and presumed we were next. Again we waited and waited. In the end we just got up and left the pub and took our business elsewhere. I advised the staff that were standing behind the bar we were leaving as they had taken to long to serve us

We were the first people to try out the new 'pods' at The Sportsman. What a lovely experience it was. OK, the CV restrictions are there, but they worked in our favour on this visit. We had a Pod to ourselves. So different, comfortable, views from the snuggy windows - and warm and dry - what a wet day outside. Service great as always. We will return within days but we suspect that, after these current restrictions are eventually lifted, the Pods will always be a real attraction. Oh, did I not mention the food? Probably because it is always.............just great. The menu might be a little restricted at the moment, but no problems with finding a very tasty, generous dish with plenty of options for those with dietary restrictions. Oh, another thing, the staff, so welcoming, friendly, helpful and professional. Thank you all.

Staff friendly and helpful. Dogs welcome, which was great for us. Clean, tidy, loos very nice.Good covid measures in place. We went for Sunday roast, unfortunately one of our family can't have rosemary, and they cook the roast potatoes in rosemary, so they were happy to do roasted potatoes for him from scratch, which was okay, it did take a very long time, over an hour, but the food was amazing. Absolutely fabulous roast pork belly, leg of lamb and chicken. Veg excellent, gravy delish. A tad on the dear side if your looking for a cheaper roast than, starting at £14 p/person. But as a treat, very well worth it as the taste was amazing.Couldn't stay for dessert as table had been re booked, as we waited for main for so long, we didn't have time.Would deffo go again if In area, would pre warn them of needing ordinary roasties, rather than cooked in rosemary of we went again to avoid the wait.

Had another amazing meal at The Sportsman on Friday - we’ve never been disappointed yet with the variety or quality of the food here, and certainly not with the quantities. We both had the fishcakes to start, and thoroughly enjoyed them. For the main course I had the fish and chips with mushy peas and my husband had just about the biggest pork chop I’ve ever seen. Both dishes were consumed with gusto, and there were several sighs of contentment thereafter! I decided that, although the dessert menu had lots of things I would have loved, as I had somewhat over indulged on the other courses, I would be good and go with the meringue and fresh fruit option, albeit with a scoop of vanilla ice cream added. Having being asked how I would like it served, I was presented with the best Eton Mess I have ever had. My other half had their delicious ice cream which is his go to choice there. All in all a really good evening made even better by the guest entertainer Mark Wright with his Rat Pack show. We would both thoroughly recommend The Sportsman for a meal if you’re in the area (and even if, like us, it means a journey to get there).

I have been to this pub lots but never for a roast, so I had high expectations! We had one chicken, one beef and one lamb all priced under £15. The meat was lovely and cooked perfectly. The vegetables were cooked to perfection - carrots, broccoli, three potatoes and kale. The Yorkshire’s were blended with rosemary, a tasty touch! The gravy was rich and really tasty! Each week they give a complimentary side - this week was cauliflower cheese, it was very cheesy and very tasty! We had a look at the pudding menu - a nice selection! Overall 8.5/10 - we would have liked the option to buy other sides - more cauliflower cheese, stuffing Yorkshire’s etc. I’ll be sure to come back - this is also a great summer venue - with a fab kids play area!

We come here once every couple of months for a Sunday roast, and always look forward to it as usually the food is sooooo tasty. There is normally a tall guy with ginger hair working and he is so friendly but didn't see him today and didn't see any of the staff that I recognise. Gutted to say that the Roast menu has changed. I'm guessing the pub changed suppliers or something as they have stopped doing the Pork Loin (which was incredibly delicious and melted in the mouth like butter). Now the pork option is Pork Belly which is full of fat :( I did mention this to the staff and was told that the Pork Loin will not be back on the menu 'for a while'. Was also disappointed to find that the gravy is not as flavoursome as normal and you get less of it too. Potatoes taste like they have been microwaved. The veg has changed too, used to get nice cabbage but now it's chewy kale. I had to ask for broccoli as they forgot to put it on the plate, they did bring it out though. I'd been looking forward to the roast dinner all week! Unfortunately I was underwhelmed and sorry to say I will not be returning anytime soon unless they bring back what I am used to. Please please please bring back the old roasts!! They were so much better. I'm worried I will have to find a new place to go for a Sunday roast and I don't want to!

We all had a roast of some form, I had the lamb and it was amazing, cooked slightly pink which is how I like it and everyone else around the table said how much they enjoyed theirs, we also all had puddings which were equally nice, especially the banoffee pie (my favourite). The only small comment is perhaps the pub is a little too dog friendly, with dogs barking throughout our lunch whenever another dog came in. Other than that though, lovely pub, great atmosphere and friendly, attentive staff! Will definitely be returning!

Visited today and was really surprised. What a wonderful pub. The menu is large and for me it was hard to decide, there were so many tantalising dishes on the menu it was hard to decide. We were veggies, toddlers and meat eaters and everyone enjoyed there food a lot. The staff were informed, friendly and very professional. A cut above most of the local places I’ve visited. The food was well presented and most importantly fresh tasting, hot and delicious. I was very impressed and would recommend everyone in the area should visit to enjoy the wide range of choice and quality. This place is a rare find. The drinks were great too. Can’t wait to come back on my next visit to Sussex. Thank you to the team at the Sportsman we had a great day.

Had the best vegetarian dish I’ve had in a long time, it was veg sausage toad in the hole done in a red wine sauce and feta, just gorgeous! Good wine menu and the service was excellent. Hadn’t been here in years and I will definitely be going back soon.

First off - any pub still going deserves praise and the staff of the Sportsman are trying hard to keep going. I sometimes come here socially, more often with work. This occasion was for a table of 20 with work. It was a large lunch order to what I imagine is a small kitchen and they did their best. Many ordered steak and amongst those who did some were dissatisfied with their choice. This is not a place to come for a good steak. But, there are other things on the menu. Drinks were prompt, there is a wide range of drinks if you ask. Dialogue with diners was good, and we're glad to have somewhere to come other than the other local 'attractions'. If the Sportsman can keep going, the area is being rebuilt, they are perfectly placed. Good luck and keep trying.

We dined here with friends last week. The pork & ham was served with half a slice of sweet potato, half a slice of parsnip, gravy that tasted like vinegar and some small squares of something that were shrivelled-up and with no taste. We would have expected a dish of vegetables as the portions were small especially as the cost was £14.50. The ham wrap around the pork was dry and brittle. The burger that was served was smaller than a MacDonald's burger with 8 chips and a small container of coleslaw at an exorbitant cost of £14.50! There was no salad on the plate so the burger was lost in the middle of the plate. Both meals were luke warm. The pub was also cold. The whole cost of the meal was very expensive and we would never dine there again.

I recently went to The Sportsman with 4 friends for lunch and we all had a great time. A lovely setting with a varied menu. The food was delicious and the portions were generous. The service was first rate, very helpful, polite and welcoming . We all remarked that we'll return very soon.

Came across this place on a Friday night en route to Brighton. Excellent good value food, very welcoming staff and they are a Brit Stop pub so we stayed over and had breakfast whilst watching the rugby World Cup. Thanks guys - you’re brilliant

Used to go to the Sportsman many years ago then it went off the boil, very pleased to report that we enjoyed a magnificent Sunday Lunch today. Large portions of excellent tender meat (lamb) served with freshly prepared vegetables.

very slow service. Ordered olives and bread and grilled halloumi which took 30mins. It wasn't busy. Olives tasted like bog standard shop bought olives, bread was nice, well presented. grilled halloumi average, nothing special (not £7 special :P). another 25mins after all of our starters were finished and finally the mains. we had been there 70 mins already. roast dinner was meh, looks nice but 3 little potatoes, undercooked chunky carrots and undercooked brocolli. tiniest portion of red cabbage to share between 7 people. literally a teaspoon each. dont even get me started on the kids £6 pizzas (more like 50p frozen pizza from asda). gravy was very watery with not much taste. potatoes were clearly reaheated (very chewy). the pork was tough and chewy even my wife agreed. to say my family were underwhelmed would be an understatement. will i be going here again? No. better can be found locally and hell of a lot cheaper. at £25 a head its way over the odds. i would have been happier with the £6 roast at withdean stadium sportsman!!!

Enjoyed my vegan choices very much. Excellent presentation and pleasant service. Comfortable modern surroundings and plenty of parking. Need to return in the daytime for another visit. Can heartily recommend the vegan burger though the remainder of the menu looked good too.

Called to ask if they were serving food and was advised yes that’s fine for the time we wanted so we asked to book a table. We was advised that booking was not needed and to just turn up.

A nice idea but v poorly executed, a garden full of approximately 250 customers and an outside bar where you had to queue at the main bar(45 minute wait) to then go back to the outside bar???? Why not just have a bottle only bar and 1 server?? It's good to see pubs having ideas like this, but this can only be described as unorganized carnage

We booked a table for 14:30, asking for roast dinner, we arrived there and just when we were about to order they said "I’m sorry but we don’t have roast dinner anymore" even though the restaurant is open until 19:00. Too early to run out of food. We won’t be going there again for sure.

We have visited this establishment numerous times previously, one of the most recent times was on Mothering Sunday, when we were asked by one of the managers “if we were going to be much longer?” once we had finished our meal as they wanted the table for another sitting, which we weren’t advised of at the time of booking!!

Our second visit to the Sportsman. A late lunch to celebrate our Anniversary. We had the beef burger and Jerk Chicken both really delicious, with that proper home cooked feel. Followed by Eton mess for dessert.. Wow!, is all can say. A couple of pints of silly moo cider. A really pleasant way too spend a couple of hours. Thanks!

Visited here and ate here another couple of times since my last review. Food and selection of beers, wine and gin all excellent. The only way businesses perform this well consistently is with great staff. Cheerful, helpful and witty. We will be back. Trip advisor always attracts a few moaners. Ignore them and visit this great pub.

I live in France and travelled to the UK for a wedding deciding to meet with my sons and have a Sunday Lunch in a Country pub - I could not have made a better choice - absolutely fantastic and the staff were great. I got introduced to the special Gins they have on offer (there is a whole page of them listed) - quite amazing - thank you for making my family get together great. We enjoyed lunch so much we went back the next day (my husband and I) - just as good as the day before.

Went to Tulleys for the second time last Friday for breakfast. It was really nice, love the hash brown, sausages and mushrooms are very tasty! 😋 The staff members were friendly and when accidentally there was a misunderstanding with our order the manager was more than happy to amend the dish so it would match the initial order. 🙌 Lovely place and certainly will go back to try the escape rooms, outdoors cinema and the events they have. Definitely recommend it!! Thank you Tulleys team :)
