The Sparrowhawk in Pendle

Visited today for a table of 5. Arrives an hour early and enjoyed drinks at the bar even though our table was ready. All 5 meals were thoroughly enjoyed. 3 roast beef dinners, a burger and minted lamb sausage. All served hot. Staff were very attentive throughout. Will definitely return.

This is the second time we’ve been here for a get together with the same party. I wasn’t impressed the first time, but went with the flow again. A friend of ours had booked a table for a get together with another friend over from Australia. We were put in the back room which had an odd smell. It looked like there had been water damage at some point near where we were sat. We ordered and the meals arrived. I can only assume that the chips had been part cooked before, then finished off to save time for guests eating as some of them were rock hard. Unfortunately the first bite i had of one has loosened a crown and done damage to my front teeth bridge. This weekend is now soup, mash and cauli cheese until the dentist on Monday

We had an absolutely lovely meal. Found it through tripadvisor and so pleased we did!! The food was beautiful, the service was faultless and the atmosphere was just right! Highly recommend!!!🙂

Again a very enjoyable time celebrating my mother in laws birthday. All the family enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Thanks to all the team for the warm welcome and attention to us during our visit. The food was great and value for money. Keep doing the good things well.

I emailed the pub about this, they haven't replied to me to try to resolve. We called in for Sunday lunch, we were sat at the back of the pub, in a cold room near the stairs to the toilet, there were no free tables in the main eating area. Our lunch was ruined. I'd have rather been told there wasn't any availability than be sat in another room by ourselves, greed over customer service, we won't go again.

Booked a table here for my daughters last Sunday Roast before going off travelling, booked the table and reserved a beef roast, so thank you for saving her one. Her boyfriend and I ordered Pork Belly, looking forward to it as none were left on our previous visit. The waitress took our order after requesting someone did so after waiting 20 minutes. The waitress came back to advise there was none left and we both changed our order. Another table came across from us when our starters were being delivered and were advised that Pork Belly was available. I asked the waitress why we couldn’t have our choice and she went away to find out. Another waitress then came and told me they had restocked and I asked why then had they not come back to us and told us it was now available and she said we couldn’t re-order as our main meal had started to be cooked on receipt of the order, she reluctantly apologised and when she left we were made to feel uncomfortable, clearly the subject of conversation amongst the other waitresses gathered behind us. The SparrowHawk is usually my restaurant of choice for family meals and meals with friends, tonight’s visit was not what I have experienced or expected on prior enjoyable visits.

Called on speck after many years as we live over an hour away. We were shown a table straight away. & only had a minute to wait till a lovely smiling young lady came to ask what we wanted to drink. We both ordered the fish & chips which tasted lovely & fresh. Sadly neither of us has the room for a dessert. The waiter service here is excellent & very efficient. We will most definitely call in again when next in the area. Thank you so much.

These waitresses and waiters are actually so hardworking and one really stood out. Molly. A lovely warm welcome to us all whilst celebrating our Daughters birthday. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, always smiling and very helpful. Chef adapted the food for my Wife who is coeliac and lactose intolerant and prepared a real treat for her. Our family hadn't been to the Sparrowhawk before as they live away, they have left with a great impression. Thank you to all the staff, it's been a wonderful afternoon with great food and many memories made.

Avoid this place like the plague rude staff was brought a chicken burger which was full of bones only to be told it was a French chicken breast which do have bones in them. So why is this not stated in the menu😡Well if I’d have known I wouldn’t have ordered as have a phobia of them so asked for my uneaten food to be removed quietly. We asked for the bill as I was hungry and asked them to take this meal of the bill to be told by the rude mangeress whatever she was that it was meant to have bones in as it’s a French breast of chicken well like I said to the other person it should be stated on the menu. Anniversary meal ruined and will never visit again

Shirley and team were very welcoming, attentive and professional on a very busy night. Ate from the festive menu: both had prawn starters which had lovely, succulent prawns in a rich and tasty sauce; all presented very nicely. We both had the turkey dinner and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. Generous portion sizes, great potatoes, rich and delicious gravy and lovely vegetables (extra vegetables for both of us which were well cooked but seemed over generous-one between two would have sufficed) Cheese plate was amazing (we shared between us) Had a singer doing acoustic vocals and he was excellent. All round great evening and experience as usual! We will obviously be back! Well done and keep up the amazing work!

When we are visiting Burnley the Sparrow Hawk is our pub of choice. Last night we visited with friends new to the area and they were very impressed with the pub and their meal. My husband is a vegetarian and said his was the best vegetarian pub meal he'd ever had. Excellent service too - with a smile. Many thanks.

Food was lovely and quickly served. Waitresses were friendly and chatty and recommended dishes which was nice. I would recommend booking a table though, we had and when we entered there was lots of locals at the bar area and I don't think we would of got a table if we hadn't of pre-booked.

Booked a table for 2 on 25th July. Was seated promptly and served drinks. Our order was taken fairly quickly and we didn’t have long to wait for our meals. We both ordered the roast beef which came served with mash, roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding & vegetables. Thoroughly enjoyed it and it was well presented. On finishing we were offered dessert menus and the chocolate torte & sticky toffee puffy were both delicious & also well presented. The staff were friendly, efficient and attentive. Will definitely be returning soon.

Absolutely brilliant. I have been here quite a few times and it's never disappointed. Had a family meal woth 16 of us last night and no fault at all, Molly who was looking after us was incredible, also spoke briefly to the owners who were a lovely couple.If you want high quality food, with high quality service I would highly recommend.Cheers guys

We were looking for a pub for lunch and the Sparrowhawk popped up on tripadvisor. Thank you tripadvisor, what a find. Great menu, friendly and helpful staff, and covid restriction working well.We had some very tasty starters and mains. A big plus point was we both asked for amendments to the courses (new potatoes instead of chips) and it wasn't a problem. We will be back to sample other items on the extensive menu.Highly recommended

Very reasonable prices, very pleasant outside seating area. Couldn't fault the steak and ale pie: home-made shortcrust pastry and tender steak pieces. The veg was fresh and generously proportioned and the chunky chips lived up to their name.

8/7/21 Just had the most amazing lamb shanks in the Sparrowhawk at Fence, we just could not get enough the bones were stripped. It simply melted in your mouth. Chef, hats off to you. We will be back very soon. Jason and Janine

My wife and I were touring around Peddle area and decided to look for a place to have lunch. The Sparrowhawk in Fence is where we settled on. The food was excellent as was the service. Friendly staff and the prices were reasonable.

My family and I were staying in the area so we decided to book a table. Food was excellent and service great staff all helpful and friendly and answered any questions we had as my wife is a fussy eater. Even though the place was busy this did not detract from the service.

Me and my friend visited Friday night and were both very impressed having not been for a Long time. The menu is varied and has all pub classics you would expect at very reasonable prices. All staff were very attentive and drinks/food all arrived promptly. The food was lovely, we both had the smoked salmon to start and then the steak and ale pie and roast duck for mains - we both really enjoyed the food. Lovely pub with a great atmosphere and food/service, would definitely recommend and will be back.

menu a bit boring, its everything you can make at home, pie, fish and chips etc, needs to have a specials menu on, going to skip this place for a while , needs an improved menu and a specials on for me to go back, also waiting a long time to get drinks, needs improving.

Very pleasant lunch for two couples in a beautiful and quiet location.Starters - tasty, refreshing sea food salad and delicious Thai stir fry. Mains - delicate duck breast full of flavour with excellent dauphinois potatoes and well cooked vegetable side.Service was good - just what you’d hope for and expect. Attentive but not intrusive.Certainly recommended.

Excellent meal last night. My duck dish and my friend's lamb shank were well cooked Greens were nice and crunchy and all veg in fact well prepared .They were very hearty portions ! The two young servers were prompt, courteous and polite. I would suggest that waiter service should include opening the wine ! Fortunately the bottle had a screw top! After the meal we sat outside on the terrace , enjoying a couple of pints of locally brewed real ale and enjoying the view over the Lancashire countryside . The Scottish lady who served us outside provided a pleasant and friendly chat . all together a very pleasant dining experience in a lovely setting with friendly yet efficient service on a balmy summer evening. Will definitely be returning .

Had a great lunch today with my friend, we both has the warm roast beef on ciabatta, it was absolutely gorgeous, the beef melted in the mouth, the coleslaw was lovely too. We were served quickly by William, and really efficient, lovely bloke.Would certainly recommend , was busy but you wouldn't have known !

First visit since late 2019. A more simpler menu, but still with some great food choices, which were superb. But the service was absolutely terrible - drinks orders taken but didn't arrive for 20 minutes. This also happened on three other tables outside - people had to keep asking for their drinks or had to go in to enquire where they were.Our food arrived - at the wrong table - and then had a nice lap of the garden before they went back inside and came back to us five minutes later.And to top it off we were charged for a bottle of wine instead of a glass.I wouldn't mind if it were peak times, but this was 5pm on a Wednesday with just a few other tables in use.

Called in for lunch, our second time in a week. The food is awesome, we both had burgers today and they were so tasty and beautifully presented. Last week I had duck breast and my wife had steak, perfectly cooked and again well presented. The service is great, our waiter today was William, very friendly and professional. We highly recommend this pub for its food, so much better than your average pub lunch.

Start to get over the rough times and go with your friends to the Sparrowhawk. Today for the first time since lockdown, my mum, neighbour and I went to the Sparrowhawk for lunch. Our first dining out experience in over 8 months. We (each person in the group) l needed today, for a cheer up and to be spoilt. The Sparrowhawk Team especially William made our afternoon perfect and memorable.... great humour, great fun, great atmosphere and fantastic food. The duck wraps and cheese cake served with the biggest spoons (actually a ladle) you will have seen made dessert time very funny. Go visit it for fun, a great time and spoil yourself with lovely food. Its country pub menu so dont except scallops, foi gras and oysters but what every plate in my group was cleared. I will be going again to try more. The Sunday roast menu looked fab!

Excellent service, food and adherence to Covid restrictions.I had steak which was perfectly cooked with generous accompaniments. My husband had the duck which he thoroughly enjoyed. Stick toffee pudding was heavenly. The staff were professional and attentive.We will certainly be back and will recommend to friends

My husband and I stayed there while visiting family and we had the best experience there. Just last last nigh (oddly enough), Brian brought up the roast beef dinner we had there and he said that it was THE best roast beef dinner he'd ever had (other than his roasts); and I fully agreed. We're so looking forward to our next stay there.

Had hit some quarrels thanks to witches bursting our cars tyre. Ended up in here with some friends and gratefully had all the quarrels thoroughly removed. Serious un-quarrelling occurred and for that, many blessings. x

Not been for a good while. Had a meal with friends on a busy Sat night. Every meal was excellent. The menu has a great variety and we were all really pleased. The food is as lovely as the venue/location. Cannot recommend enough.

Lovely ambiance as per usual and the social distancing was spot on. Sadly the service was "flustered "...but I don't know why it was quitening down. My wife had lamb shank, she asked for no gravy, it arrived swamped in the brown stuff!The meat was tough and hard to eat. I had gammon but the accompanying garlic new potatoes were undercooked and hard......Didn't bother complaining and my coffee was harsh and cold...Bad day at the races "Sadly we had a poor meal a month earlier, this place is in a beautiful setting, lovely ambiance but......

Had a great and safe experience at the sparrowhawk The food was first rate and the staff were welcoming. This place is situated in a lovely location overlooking wonderful countryside ‘ unfortunately the weather wasn’t such that we could eat outdoors but we felt quite happy eating indoors given that the distance between tables ensured distancing. Hubby loved his ploughman’s ( exceptionally large) I had the steak and ale pie that was delicious. Will be returning.

Went for first drinks out with friends in 4 months. We sat in the beer garden at the back. Was beautiful surroundings. The table service was excellent and very prompt. The beer was lovely, I'd highly recommend the Peroni,beautiful pint. We also had some food. I personally had the squid starter as I only wanted a light bite. It was delicious and perfectly cooked. Again the service for food was quick. The staff were all pleasant and really tentative. I'd highly recommend a visit to anybody.

Lovely grounds and premises. The bar and waiting staff are great and it is obvious the kitchen staff care about what they do. A smashing pub that serves great beer and great food.

A few friends and myself arranged a post lock down meet up at Ye Old Sparrowhawk and were left very impressed. Staff were brilliant and explained the distancing measures simply on arrival. The food was great as well. Will be visiting again 100%

Had out first meal out together here in July after lockdown and everything was super. The cheese and onion pie was one of the best I’ve had and went wel with the chilli beans. Homemade chips too which where gorgeous! My partner had the steak pie with veg and that was lovely too. Eton Mess & Lemon Tart where wicked! Service and cleanliness on point too .Would definitely recommend and will be returning for sure!

First time I’ve ever been to SparrowHawk, and will most definitely be the last!Waited over an hour and half for our food (which we had pre-booked a table for), and when the food finally arrived, the food was incorrect so had to be sent back to the kitchen. The staff were appallingly rude, even heard one of the female staff slagging us off to another staff member. The overall atmosphere from the staff was worse than I have ever experienced, which is a shame as it was meant to be a celebration of my partner being pregnant.Will not be visiting again, wasn’t offered a reduction on the bill, despite our wait, and our overall diabolical experience. The only one thing I noticed was a guy that was working that day (longish hair with bandana) you could see he was over worked and doing more then any staff member there so hats off to him! He did a good job! other then that I have no positive feedback.

What can I say apart from WOW first visit since lock down and absolutely shocking called inp for a few drinks with the neighbours and wish we hadn’t. Over 35 minutes to get 4 drinks then asked to pay nearly £37 for the privilege. Wrong bill given to which I was made to feel I was at fault and the table service was shocking staff behaving and looking like they didn’t want to be there and we’re quiet rude. I wouldn’t mind but it wasn’t that busy. So sorry guys absolutely shocking. Not a patch on before the lock down poor show very very very poor show

Went for lunch with friends, had to wait 50 minutes for our lunches to arrive, then a further 20 minutes for the desserts. It was not very busy either!

We came her for my partners birthday meal and were not disappointed at all. The food was lovely and there was plenty of it and I also couldn't fault the staff at all. The meal for 3 people including drinks came in at just over £100 which is the reason I'm only giving it 4 starts, there were some loud/drunk locals at the bar which was a bit of a pit off but we would definitely go again.

Arrived for lunch on a Tuesday. Partner chose rump steak. Lots of fat on the steak, much more than should have been even on a cheaper cut if meat as it was inedible. My duck wrap was probably my own bad choice but was pretty flavourless and didn't taste if any hoi sin that I've ever tasted. However the staff were great and our drinks were taken off the final bill as an apology. As our money is so hard earned we unfortunately won't come back for food as, we can't afford to have disappointing food anywhere we go

We ventured to The Sparrowhawk searching for a tasty Sunday lunch. WOW We were not disappointed, We had the chicken liver parfait to start which was really good then had the Belly Pork sunday lunch. It was delicious. Everything about it was really good including all the veg which tasted lovely. My only disappointment was they had no vegetarian sunday lunch option on the menu but apart from that full marks and we will defo be back.

My girlfriend and l have visited for Sunday Lunch twice, and each time we have both found the Yorkshire Pudding to be very crisp and bitter tasting. They appear to be large deep fried (probably not) balls. The balance of the meals have been good, so we will certainly go again, but will request no Yorkshires when we do, extra vegetables will be the request.

We happened to be in the area and just popped in for lunch today - Wednesday. All of the staff were very warm and welcoming and the food was sensational. We would highly recommend a visit and definitely have the Steak and ale pie and the Lamb chops.

Visited on a Tuesday evening for a business dinner. Location - Fence. Parking available, large car park. Food - Excellent home cooked meals. Fish Pie Excellent. Service - Excellent service.

Excellent NYE!We had a great night with friends at The Sparrowhawk, with good company, great food and excellent service and, for New Years Eve, all at a very reasonable cost.With the venue being full, the service was superb with every staff member being both pleasant and efficient with nothing being too much trouble. A rare commodity in this day & age !Again, considering the evening, the food was excellent, well cooked and presented and every dish was perfect.We look forward to our next visit.

A group of us booked a table for New Year's Eve. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals, good cask ales I was reliably informed and other drinks. There was a singer, Robyn, who sang a range of songs that we all liked, evident by so many people dancing! It was a really great atmosphere for New Year's Eve, thanks to Tom and the Sparrowhawk team.

We called here today as passing which was a last minute choice. The pub looks lovely especially from outside. Great car park size with outside seating.

Me and my family went here for a meal on Christmas Day. The food was absolutely delicious with good portion sizes and the staff were friendly and accommodating. The pub is so friendly and is very cosy. Really good use of space and would definitely recommend for others to go there.

Very disappointed with the standard of food we received for our Christmas dinner roast potatoes were shocking vegetables over cooked Christmas pudding can only be described as a solid brick serve on a plate for £70 per head absolutely shocking

We visited at lunchtime today and me and my wife had fantastic meals. The steak and ale pie was excellent my wife had fish pie which she said was better than her own Jamie Oliver fish pie. We will be going back for me to try the excellent fish pie. Plenty of choice of wines and the young gentlemen that took our order was lovely and pleasant.The pub itself has a warm friendly atmosphere and a beautiful roaring fire that adds to the relaxed chilled atmosphere. Really enjoyed our lunch here with friends last week. The service was efficient and friendly. The food was really good quality. We will be back!

We visited one lunch time and were very happy with our meals . The steak and ale pie was fabulous as well as the slow cooked lamb and the hake with lentil was a very original combination. We all felt the quality of the food was good the portions were a good size and the staff were friendly . We will return undoubtedly.

Good value good ale and pleasantly surprised by the food . My starter of mushroom stuffed with ham and topped with cheese was great and the ingredients well sourced and plated. We all had roast turkey because we are away for Xmas Nicely cooked meat and good York's, roasts and veggies. Service was just right. Prompt but not invasive. And a warm fireside table to boot made this one for the recommended list.

Me and my friend both had a late lunch here, fish and chips was beautiful and highly recommend, chicken burger was also delicious and very good size portions, staff where all very helpful and friendly and great that it’s dog friendly but also very clean and brilliant atmosphere

We had an absolutely fantastic Sunday roast at the Sparrowhawk. We couldn’t fault it at all. The staff were friendly and the food was fantastic.

Our second time eating here within a month. There seem to be few places where you can eat with a dog nearby, and this pub is a real find. We were afforded a very warm welcome and the pub is well looked after, clean and with a nice outside eating area with a good view. A few minutes from the M65. The steak and ale pie was excellent (quite unusual to have an individual pie with short crust pastry). The fish pie and the roast hake are also tasty. Follow these with the apple sponge or the trio of desserts and you certainly won’t be disappointed! We will be back!

Visited yesterday for a late lunch how accommodating and friendly were the staff!! Being gluten and dairy free had an amazing lunch. Commented on this and was introduced to Chris the chef - what a great job he does.

We went here due to the raving reviews and I have absolutely no clue where those reviews came from the food is poor to standard at best. The hunters chicken is just strange, rather than being a breast that’s been chargrilled then layered with bacon, cheese and bbq sauce it comes out as a tightly rolled sausage shaped chicken breast which has been boil cooked. It tasted ok just like chicken breast ...but not tasty by any means. The chips were just your frozen basic chips that you can get at any take away. The desert of I’ll use the term “creme brûlée” loosely, was like a half set runny custard with absolutely no hard burnt caramel top and tasted of nothing except raspberry. There was no part of it that resembled a thick flavour full custard. The chicken kebab was literally one skewer of poor quality chicken, not breast, and was the size that a child could easily eat. The custard on the other deserts was like water. The service is poor the whole three hours we were there someone came over once to ask us if we wanted drinks, the rest of the time you were constantly getting up looking for staff to take your order, get a drink and everything in between. My thoughts are that the people leaving the great miss leading reviews don’t know what good food is, everything here is poor and easily made at home with little effort. Don’t waste your money. Good prices for poor food.

Despite our late arrival due to accident on the motorway owners were very welcoming great choice of cask ales highly recommended

Went for lunch. Great menu selection at reasonable prices and great views... beautiful location. Best Fish and Chips I’ve had in a long while and the chocolate brownie was to die for... my husbands Plum Fool looked amazing too! Service excellent with our server Lawrence. Recommend and would definitely return if in that location again.

We ate here twice during our visit to a hotel nearby. Great value for money and nice big portions. The waiters and waitresses are really nice and polite, and are quick to take your order and drinks.

Went tonight (20/8/19) for my sons birthday meal, how absolutely lovely and perfect the staff made it for us. They decorated the table with balloons and made our visit so much fun and special, they are a credit to to pub. The food was as always excellent, I cannot speak highly enough. Four of us dined here as it’s usually consistently good quality food at a reasonable price with great service. Unfortunately this time although the service was the usual good standard the food wasn’t. Two of us had duck with red cabbage and dauphinoise potato. My duck was chewy and raw in the middle.... which I’m prepared to accept as I like mine quite pink but the fat had not been rendered and the skin wasn’t crispy.... in fact it was blubbery. The duck had obviously not been cooked properly and rested. The potato was not cooked through in the middle which meant I only ate the outside slices. My friend asked for a steak knife to separate the fat from the meat on her duck. Lots of waste on my plate which is a bit of a shame when you are paying for a full plate of edible food. Hopefully this was just a bad day in the kitchen. Our other two meals.... fish and chips and sea bass were fine.

we went to The Sparrow Hawk fence in Sunday as a family , the staff were super friendly and extremely efficient, we had tomato and basil soup to start which i have to say was hands down the best soup i’ve tasted in a long time with huge croutons, followed by turkey roast dinner and beef roast dinner with the best homemade Yorkshires ever the veg was spot on and the roast potatoes were super, i would highly recommend this establishment to anyone 5*
