Food was great and prepared quickly. Friendly staff made the experience alot more enjoyable. Wanst very busy when we first went in but soon became a very busy pub. It was cold, but it's such a large open space it would be hard to heat. Food and drink were both excellent and good choice of different beers to choose from.

Propped in for a quick pint (Guinness, was excellent) and a burger (was delicious) Guinness was very high standard Food was served promptly and was delicious (had a burger) Nirvana once played in this venue. If you know, you know.

Met others for a drink and was a nice space with a reasonably good atmosphere. Not too busy on a weekday night when we visited and a well split up space which meant it wasn't too noisy and some sense of being more intimate.

Great little pub with a nice cosy atmosphere, bigger than it looks from the outside. Fantastic range of beers, all about average Edinburgh prices. Went on a Tuesday afternoon and it was nice and quiet. Saw another table get food and the burgers look VERY nice, will be going back for one of those!

Nice pub in good location for Queen's Hall and Festival Theatre. Table service was great and prices weren't bad for Edinburgh. Good vegan options and range of cocktails. We will return!

Great pub food, lovely staff and great service

Traditionally-styled bar offers interesting beer selection - some locally brewed - with friendly and attentive service. Located on the city's South Side (near the Queens Hall). Clean, warm, well-managed, with great music and largely free of the curse of sports TV. Mixed clietele, suitable for different sized groups and ages. What's not to like? 😁

A place where you want to be. Right in the heart of the city, The Southern is a traditional pub with a huge selection of beers and drinks. The food quality is excellent and the price fair. The service is amazing, everyone was very kind and both girls showed a great smile for our kids. We’ll definitely go back there!

Nachos were so tough and baked on to the dish it was impossible to break some of them free. Peach crumble consisted of a few tinned sliced peaches covered with breakfast cereal. No way was it anything near a proper crumble. Very stodgy and not enjoyable. Altogether a disappointing experience

Was regular customer for several years,however after last visit recently it will change...service was terrible or better say no service-had to order second drinks near bar...with food got wrong items,they exchanged it later but in bill was still the food we didnt order.So watch your bills if go there.Waiters were very ignorant and never came to table.Sadly not same place anymore like used to be.

The halloumi burger is usually brilliant. today I had the seasonal veg bowl - it was okay. They have Long White Cloud and Various other great beers on tap.

Excellent locally made pint. Friendly staff. Scotsman burger delicious. Looking forward to going back.

It's a nice place but we waited 1½ hour for our food which was a bit too long for us. No sauce to the fish and chips made that dish a bit of a dry experience, at least until the kitchen whipped something up - but the scotsman burger and the macaroni and cheese was tasty and they have a good selection of beer and drinks.

The food is amazing, The staff are very polite and very nice and helpful, the pub is walking distance from town but not too busy a pub and has a nice feeling about it .

So this is a place with quite a lot of history, where Nirvana once played a secret show for about 50 people. So we had to stop by for drinks, and they were actually cheaper than in most places in this area. Good atmosphere too.

This feels like a fusion of Scottish and Irish pubs. Loved the style and the beer/food is really good. Especially fish and chips.

Went during a busy time when they didn't seem to have many staff on and had quite a few large bookings. Food was really nice, although took a little while to come (big bookings), and there's a varied cocktail menu. Staff were overrun but we're friendly and nice, just obviously needed a few more of them to service such a large place!

We happened upon this establishment after our first option to eat was fully reserved---we are glad we did! The waitress was nice and attentive. The food was well made, tasty and timely. We ordered starters and vegetarian and fish main courses. Moreover, the drink selection will make any alcoholic skip their AA class;)

Great pub which has been in South Clerk Street for many years. A good selection of beers and still about a fiver a pint, good down to earth atmosphere and friendly staff. Oh and Nirvana played there many years ago.

Ouch to the prices! But yay to the alcohol free selection and atmosphere. Doggo friendly and lovely staff! But please be kinder to the wallet. I can't return 😪 if you can't serve a pint under £5.

Faultless We were looking for a pre gig pub diner and came across this place by chance. Nice welcome, knowledgable fun barman, after viewing menus the chef himself came to take our order to check we got exactly wanted: superior pub food at its best. Most satisfied

One of the best, classy bars in old town. Great food, impressive selection of draft craft beer, exceptional prices for the location. We were lucky enough to come during a pub quiz which was incredible, I think they do them weekly. Well worth a visit as it was tricky but very fun. The staff were unparalleled, the perfect balance, they were there when you needed them but also weren’t intrusive. 10/10 experience, recommend for anyone in the area.

He estado aquí muchas veces y es uno de los pubs más bonitos de la zona. Siempre algunas buenas cervezas de barril (muchas cervecerías artesanales locales también, lo que es aún mejor), la música es buena y cuando las velas están encendidas es acogedora y tiene un ambiente agradable.Cuando como aquí, generalmente tengo la hamburguesa y no tengo ninguna queja: carne jugosa, papas fritas sabrosas y algunos buenos encurtidos al lado. La última vez que comimos tuve pescado y papas fritas y tengo que decir que estaba tristemente decepcionado.Todo el pez estaba plagado de huesos. Me abrí paso pero tuve que dejar la mayor parte. Le indiqué esto al camarero / personal y dijo que era porque era pescado fresco.Ahora, no soy pescadero pero sé que lo primero que CUALQUIER restaurante hace con pescado fresco es deshuesarlo. Parecía una extraña excusa para algo que se olvidó claramente.Estoy tan triste porque sabía increíble pero se volvió incomible y estoy triste porque normalmente le daría a este lugar 5 estrellas. Pinbone su pescado correctamente y volveré a hacer mi revisión!

Order a burger online. Arrived quickly and it was really tasty. I very much recommend it from Deliveroo, as a location for a beer it is excellent too. Nicely decorated with plenty of beers, upmarket and pricey but you always pay more for a nice pint.

Several areas for cosy dinner, did not require prior booking. Good music, decor and food. Service was great and fast.

Visited for a swift bite before a gig at the Queen's Hall. Managed to grab the last free table and ordered - food arrived not long after and was tasty. Pretty good Chicken Club burger with a nice chunk of brie in it - could have done without the brioche bun, but the house fries were good. Pricing is pretty good, not over the top. Staff were totally on the ball even though the bar was busy.

Sunday evenings without reservations tough in town. Wandered into this beautiful facade restaurant and they found the 4 of us a table right away. Decor interesting, bigger place than you perceive because of multiple rooms. Food really good and service fast. Off the downtown main street [not touristy] but worth a visit especially for the food and HUGE selection of beers.

First time visit here just for drinks and not food but was impressed and will definitely give the food a bash at some point. Came here with friends prior to a gig at Queens Hall and the range of drinks was excellent, service was great and the prices were reasonable. Good atmosphere and a decent crowd in and some of the dishes that were passing us by looked lovely. Never a pub I’d been into before but impressed and will return.

Cool, deceptively large bar with loads of beers/ales on tap to try. Found this little gem while waiting for a bus and ended up staying and missing three! Had the Smoky Bird chicken burger with smoky bacon beer jam....so delicious!!!

Popped in for swift half that turned in to three. Food was ace choice of beer was mind boggling. I had one of the lagers. Friendly and fun staff. My new southside favourite.

We were a party of five, high on laughter post Henning Wehn's Fringe gig, looking for a meal. We went into The Southern, found a table, ordered basic pub grub, which was just average. The problem was the sound level. Music was blaring, people yelling across tables trying to converse with friends over their drinks and food...it was a cacophony. We ate and drank up, and left. Had we been able to hold a conversation, we might have stayed for another drink...

Great bar with super beers and great bar meals! I enjoyed the ambiance and bar staff were very friendly.

We’d looked on trip advisor and thought we would go to the Abbey but it was so busy and loud we walked down the road and stumbled upon this place. All our meals were delicious and the staff friendly. If you like different beers there are loads to choose from

It was actually the Perfect Serve Kraken and Ginger beer that drew our attention. Excellent drink, by the way. Then we had a burger and sweet potato fries each, glad of nice Malbec with it. Burgers were lovely and moist, fries as they should be. Staff are attentative and friendly.

Great choice of burgers on the menu to suit many tastes, with an even greater choice of beers to wash it down.

the southern bar in clerk street has a good atmosphere with good background music playing the drink are reasonable and the food is excellent i had calamari although it was a small portion it was a starter very tasty my friend had a classic burger she said it was one of the best shes tasted and she is fussy about her food so it must have been good. nice bar.

Visited with my family. 4 woman, were a friendly but fussy bunch. Nothing was a bother. Our food was superb. Waiting staff were friendly and efficient.

Parece un poco anticuado desde el exterior y al entrar estaba un poco cansado, pero nos recibió un amable caballero, que fue informativo sobre su menú, que es importante para nosotros, ya que la mayoría de mi familia conmigo no tienen gluten. La cenamos para el desayuno y fuimos los primeros clientes del día. Todos tuvimos el tradicional desayuno escocés, fue excepcional, también tuvimos la fruta y el yogur que era absolutamente encantador. El camarero nos mantuvo con té (gratis) mientras esperábamos nuestra comida, que él explicó que está preparado a pedido y no se mantiene en un plato caliente. Estaba delicioso. Sin duda recomendaría el desayuno aquí.

Fuimos a The Southern para pasar un día en familia, todo estuvo bien hasta la tarde, cuando por alguna razón nos pidieron que nos fuéramos ya que la camarera dijo que teníamos mucho que beber, cuando pregunté por qué llegaron a esa conclusión, todo lo que obtuve Es que no tenemos que decirte. Recorrí el área donde estábamos sentados y les pregunté a los otros clientes si estábamos enojados o molestados, todos dijeron que no. Como la mayoría de los clientes eran jóvenes y mi esposa y yo tenemos 70 años, estoy seguro de que estaban siendo agresivos, dijeron que no, pero no les creo, llamamos a la policía, pero no esperamos. Salimos por nuestra propia cuenta. así que ten cuidado si eres una persona mayor.

Visitamos con un grupo de amigos. Este lugar sirve hamburguesas de buena calidad que son realmente el componente principal del menú de comidas con una selección razonable de otros platos, como el pollo. Una buena selección de vino tinto por copa y mis colegas parecían contentos con la gama de cervezas de barril.

Dropped in with some friends. They have an excellent range if tap beer. Mostly burgers with a few other bits and pieces. Very tasty. Would recommend.

Love the burgers and the nachos were ace. The staff were lovely and were super helpful especially when we had an error with our meal. I would say though, that the service was a little slow and the table was left dirty in between courses / lots of glasses.

This is a legendary pub and in the 90’s Kirk Cobain famously turned up unannounced and played some tunes. I couldn’t see any reference to this in the pub! It’s a good Scottish pub selling the usual range of drinks. It looks like it has been renovated recently.

Stopped in here for lunch on a Sunday, staff were lovely and the food was good. I had the Brisket Burger and it was delicious. When we arrived it was quiet and we were seated right away but within half an hour it became really busy. It is really child-friendly too. If you are in the area give it a try.

Fuimos a tomar unas copas y algo de comida con mi esposo. Ambos tuvimos la 'hamburguesa de petardo' - ¡excelente! El personal era encantador, atento pero no dominante. Uno de nuestros lugares favoritos Volveremos pronto.

Buen lugar para ir con amigos o pareja. La hamburguesa muy bien cocida, ingredientes frescos y buenas opciones. Totalmente recomendable.

Sirven comida excelente de una manera moderna, pero aún mantienen un ambiente de pub. Tuve el salmón a la parrilla con Edamame, que era realmente delicioso.

Tuvimos la suerte de estar cerca del sur, así que fue una elección basada en ubicación en primera. No volver en nuestra última noche en Edimburgo porque el personal era tan amable y servicial, y el ambiente era fantástico. La comida era buena y había una buena elección para el vegetariano.

Came here for lunch and have to say it was excellent. I had the Southern burger and my partner had the Chicken Ciabatta, both came with chips. Good range of drinks, both alcoholic and non alcoholic, were offered too. Would definitely recommend thus place.

Bonito bar sur en Edimburgo, que es genial para tomar una cerveza (y tienen una muy buena selección de barril).

Visitamos el sur poco después de llegar a Edimburgo en un sábado a mediodía. Nos recibió un personal muy amable y servicial que nos ofreció varias cervezas antes de catadores elegimos que uno a la orden. Teníamos hamburguesas y ya no puedo tener gluten fueron muy hospitalarios y me dio un lado ensalada en lugar de la pelea. En general, disfrutamos de nuestra experiencia y planeamos volver en algún momento durante nuestro viaje. La guinda del pastel fue que nos dieron un drumstick piruletas cada cuando la cuenta vino!

El primer plato de nachos que teníamos eran de buena calidad. Yo y los otros dos hamburguesas de carne de pollo/pidió que todos sabían extraño dada la desagradable salsa blanca a través del llenado. La carne era claramente de patty congelados. Otro amigo pedimos el pescado que era demasiado pequeña, dado el precio, y carece de sabor. Las patatas fritas en todos los platos también eran de congelados. El servicio era muy lento y todo desde las bebidas, al empezar, y la corriente llevó una yéndose de largo período de tiempo a la orden y para llegar. Mi amigo pidió que apagan su orden normal de patatas fritas batata aproximadamente dos minutos después de nuestro pedido inicial. Dado que la comida tardó 40 minutos para venir a otro, me parece que es la excusa que la comida de todos modos" era casi listo" para parafrasear a nuestra camarera, difícil de tragar. Durante este tiempo, cuando estaba en otro lugar en el restaurante, me di cuenta de que los chefs eran en sus teléfonos en la cocina. Un inconveniente de cambiar un orden chip claramente no hubiera sido difícil realizar. Teniendo en cuenta cinco de nosotros pagamos alrededor de £100 por esta experiencia, ninguno de nosotros se siente como si conseguimos una buena relación calidad-precio dada la calidad mediocre de la comida y el servicio.

Me encantó. Mi madre y yo vinimos aquí antes de ir a ver Tokio Myers. La comida era fresca y caliente. Extremadamente de gran calidad. Es razonable caro, pero bien vale la pena el dinero. No sólo eso, el servicio era extremadamente rápido. El ambiente es tan increíble con velas y luces bajas. Incluso puedes jugar juegos!

I have been here many times and I have never been disappointed. There's always a great selection of beers on tap and staff are always very patient and welcoming. Daisy in particular was absolutely lovely and seemed to know everything there was to know about the 15+ beers which was quite impressive.

Was accommodated at the last moment for a LARGE family gathering for a post wedding celebration on Sunday afternoon , lots of different peoples wants and needs for a group of 7 year olds to 75- the service setting and food were all spot on , great beer range and soft drinks for the younger members , thanks to all working as it meant a lot at such short notice -

Amazing selection of different beers, ales etc. on tap and a wide selection of burgers to choose from, Halloumi burger is especially delicious. The atmosphere is welcoming.

All Apologies first of all for all the Nirvana references scattered throughout this review. This the very location where the Seattle grunge legends played a surprise gig while they were on the brink of superstardom.

After seeing this restaurant on here and also been told to visit by friend, both my brother and I decided to try it out. We were not disappointed at all. The restaurant provides a big variety of all different drinks and burgers. The restaurant provides a great chilled atmosphere which was perfect for a catch up with my brother. Will definitely be coming back and recommending to others.

We have visited you before and had a repeat visit when we came back to see our son who lives in the City. We were yet again not disappointed, with the young lady who served us suggesting a few cocktails for the wife, which she tweeted to suit her taste.

The atmosphere was really great, but my food was tasteless. I got the chicken burger on the festive menu and it was not so good. My whole table’s food was so so. Really cool restaurant but food was not so great. Bummer.

We called here 04/11/17. Wow!!! Fantastic burgers. Highly recommended. There's different burgers on the menu. They also have vegetarian. I would certainly come again. Good beer too.
