"Fat Hippo: Hype vs. Reality" I had been eagerly anticipating a visit to Fat Hippo for a while, especially after following their posts on Instagram. So, we decided to finally go and celebrate Mother’s Day there. The meal started off strong, the starters were fantastic, especially the cheese balls, which were a definite highlight. However, when it came to the main event, the burgers, I was left disappointed. They were, unfortunately, quite underwhelming. Just average at best. I tried all four burgers at our table, and none stood out as anything above average. The service was decent, and the ambience was enjoyable, but overall, the food and the experience didn’t quite live up to expectations. It was an okay visit, but not one I’d rush back for.

Great place to get warmer in the beautiful cold breeze of Edinburgh 😍 with their giant burgers. The PB+JJ burger was amazing! The service was great too 🙌🏼

Had Ru as a server, he was lovely :) food was good but quite big portions so couldn’t finish it 😂 done the eat out Edinburgh for £20 for a starter, main and side, good value for money!

Incredible food and really friendly service Highly recommend

Very disappointing, poor management. The burgers were lovely. For gluten free, expect a bun half the size. Could have compensated with a side salad. It was freezing and many people were sitting with their coats on. We did ask if they could turn the heating up, but didn't. Bit like McDonald's, salt in little packets, plastic sauce bottles filthy with sauce dripping down the side. Actually McDonald's are more professional than this place.

Had a great experience here. Already love the Fat Hippo franchise and hadn’t visited this location yet. Staff were really friendly and helpful, helping cater to multiple series food allergies and changing the burger order to suit my allergy needs. They were confident in dealing with the allergy (no half answers as to whether it was safe) which was great to see. Highly recommend and will be back!

Great Burgers & Staff. We had the Watchis and burgers which felt light. Better than a fast food burger place for sure.

I must say, walking into this restaurant I was hit with instant belief I was in for a good meal. I was welcomed by a redhead who ignored my orders. After around 45 minutes I was met with my meal, very decent looking meal. After a few bites I thought to myself, kfc is better than this . I ordered a chicken burger and I must say the chicken tasted quite decent along with the sauces , which were very flavoursome. I must say, the burger itself had a lot of flavour but the chips, I mean I make better chips in my air fryer so it takes a not so good restaurant to make worst. Anyway moral is staff were bad, food was mediocre and overpriced and my night was ruined as I went into an overdraft . My friends although, enjoyed there desert but complained about it being too sweet along with to much marshmallows at the top disturbing the desert as a whole. Overall, very disappointed to say the least. Was filled with hope after friends and relatives said there nice words about this restaurant and was given a valuable lesson on not to trust anyone . Overall, chicken in burger was nice but everything else was extremely disappointing

Burger was amazing, no other words needed to be honest. Portion sizes perfect. Service was fast as they had a lot of staff who were very polite and friendly. Banging tunes tae

When walking into this restaurant I had high expectations, but I was deeply disappointed. To be fair £15 for fries and a burger seems like a good price but trust me it’s not worth it. The waiting time was slightly inconvenient but seeing as the atmosphere was okay the 45 minute wait was bearable. The chips where so plain even the ketchup couldn’t save them, the fat hippo burger was bland and quite frankly boring, I was expecting a clash of flavours in my mouth but the salty bacon over powdered everything else, the pattys were over cooked and flavour less, The “gimme S’more dessert was nice and I enjoyed it but it was a little on the sweeter side and the price was a little much, The only decent thing about the place was the staff but even they seemed like they didn’t want to be there. The worst part about me and my friends experience was the mandatory 10% we had to pay for the service which was sprung upon us when we where handed the bill. I won’t be visiting again and I definitely won’t be recommending fat hippo to anyone I care about.

An incredible evening of food and service. Our party had an individual with a severe nut allergy and the staff couldn’t have been more accommodating. Craig the manager and Morven were fantastic and attentive and we can’t thank them enough. Would highly recommend Fat Hippo Edinburgh and will be back in the future.

Amazing experience! We had the original vfc 2.0. The fake chicken tasted very good, the sauce had a nice heat to it, the hand cut fries were crispy and well seasoned, they are not stingy with the ketchup or mayo (you get a full bottle, pretty sure it was Heinz even) and the draught beer tasted very nice too. And not to mention the incredibly nice server. Definitely recommend coming here.

Large portions, meals range in price from approximately £12 to £16, although starters are cheaper and there are also more expensive dishes. The taste is very good and it is worth visiting this place when looking for a meal

Unfortunately this place is not safe for Customers. I ordered burger without jalapeños (I ask to do not have them) and I received burger with jalapenos. After my intervention about that I received another burger but unfortunately in last bait I found jalapeño. I can presume that from first burger someone just swooped toppings and I received same burger. I ordered as well zinger mayo but knowing that I want my meal without jalapeños nobody warred me that zinger mayo contacted jalapeno. All that situation is very serious from customer health perspective…

Went for the £20 eat out Edinburgh deal. This was noted in my booking (as per terms) but after paying and leaving it seems the deal hasn't come off my bill correct. Food was great though. If the restaurant sees this please get in touch about me being charged incorrectly

Quiet when we came in as early afternoon, stunning food, had the Wild Bill burger, Katy was a fabulous host and looked after us.

Ordered the American Burger and the Five Lives Burger. The American Burger was overcooked and there was too much mustard and ketchup so I rated it a 1.5/5. As well none of the burgers came with veggie (tomato/lettuce). The Five Lives Burger was plant based and it was dry as well, my partner rated it a 3/5. The fries are covered in a cajun seasoning and it is quite spicy. So if that's not the type of thing you like, ask them to not add it and/or pick another side option. We tried two of the sauces which were one pound each, the ranch and garlic butter mayo. The ranch was a 3/5 and the garlic dip was nice about a 4/5. Service tonight was okay but we understand it was understaffed, but they did amazing! I ended the night with the Mars chocolate milkshake that was so delicious. 5/5 if you're in the mood for a good thick salted caramel shake.

One thing Fat Hippo doesnt do is scrimp! The SIZE of the burgers are unfathomable - literally about 3 burgers in one. Their dirty fries are served with an insane amount of house sauce (phenomenal, btw). And considering the quality & quantity, its still an incredibly reasonable price. Any dessert & shake can be made vegan too!! Thank you to Ru & Siobhan for being lovely hosts! If we were from Edinburgh, we’d be a frequent customer.

Dined at Fat Hippo, George Street, Edinburgh last night and was unfortunatley disappointed. Overly long wait for food when there was only about 5 tables in the restaurant and once the food was served; Overly greasy onion rings that left us feeling unwell and an under-sauced over cooked burger that tasted chewy and dry. Maybe it was because it was quiet and late on a Sunday night but we were unsatisfied with the experience unfortunatley on this occasion.

Incredible value for money and super tasty food, wonderful staff, awesome looking restaurant. Very clean, quick, fun atmosphere. The staff we were served by was a woman with tied up brown hair - she was super! A woman with super cool punky hair with a red bit in it - she was amazing! And a man who also made our puddings - he was so funny and sweet! All staff were very acvommodating and despite 7 people ordering lots of foods and dips and drinks, there were 0 mistakes and eveeything was done in perfect time, honestly no complaints. VERY yummy food, i recommend tater tots starter, any burger honestly (i'm vegetarian and mine was amazing and all my family loved their non-veggie burgers - specifically the chicken they said). Lots of options and overall TASTY. I'd 100% go back!

Fat hippo is by far one of my go to places in Edinburgh. Sunday was such a disappointment. We arrived to what was a very empty restaurant and ordered drinks then food. My daughter ordered off kids menu £7.50 plain cheese burger and to start the cheese bites. We forgot to say no sauce but these were lovely. Lots if not to much cheese. They had been cooked in the same fryer as my wings however as there was flour chunks stuck to the cheese balls which would be very disappointing if she was a vegetarian. The wings were burnt, burnt flour and the texture was tough. Not been in buttermilk long enough I don’t know but no where near as good as they have been before. My fat hippo burger was decent. Not as saucy as there instagram and Facebook posts so felt a bit dry throughout. The double patty which we were not told would be an extra £5 was good and came plain as requested. Bill was sorted after we explained the mix up. But all in all very disappointing experience. This is my type of food and I cook it everyday at my work. Just needs a bit more work to get it right. Putting 2 onion rings on a burger is good visually but practicallity was pointless. Oh and the purple slaw was very tasteless for what it was. Very lacking in dressing

First time here and I have to say, fantastic. We were greeted by the friendly and cheerful Esther and Shannagh, who are a real credit to the restaurant. The food was amazing, the dirty waffles and American in particular, and the fries were the crispiest and tastiest I've had in a long time. There is a good selection of drinks, particularly boozy milkshakes. Will definitely come back. Highly recommend!

Everything was great, best buttermilk burger I’ve ever had, and the blue cheese ranch dressing was delicious! Ru was our waiter and he was super nice. 100% recommend Fat Hippo.

Be warned the wachos are SO SPICY, i was convinced my mouth was on FIRE. Very nice cheese balls tho, burgers were nice as well. Our servicer Esther was lovely!!!

Amazing place, cannot recommend enough!! Best value for money and the food is delicious. Staff are really nice and our waiter Ru was especially attentive. We had crack wings for our starter, and I had a semi-parmed life. Fantastic, also wasn’t too busy in the week so the atmosphere was great inside.

Delicious burgers and 10 service

Paramos aquí para cenar en nuestro viaje a Edimburgo este febrero. Aunque la comida era lo suficientemente agradable el servicio fue decepcionante. Esperamos 50 minutos por nuestras dos hamburguesas con papas fritas que no nos hubiera importado si alguien hubiera venido y nos hubiera explicado que la espera sería tan larga. En su lugar nos dejaron esperar en la oscuridad - nadie vino a vernos, ofrecernos más bebidas y nadie se disculpó o explicó cuándo llegó la comida. Para añadir insulto a la lesión una mesa sentada a nuestro lado después de que habíamos recibido nuestra comida consiguió su comida en 10 / 15 minutos y una camarera fue a disculparse por su espera. Luego tuvimos un cargo de servicio del 10% añadido a nuestra factura que me parece incómodo e incómodo de eliminar, pero sentir que tiene que pagarlo después de un servicio deficiente no es realmente una buena posición para estar en. Siento que si estás en Edimburgo hay mejores lugares para comer, especialmente en este punto de precio.

Definitely worth visiting! Delicious food at a good price, the quality of the meat in the burgers is really good, great atmosphere and very nice service, we had the pleasure of being served by Ru and he definitely added a few extra points to this place. We will come back with pleasure!

En general, el hipopótamo gordo es un lugar muy conveniente si estás buscando algo simple, las pocas veces que he estado me he sentado al instante, lo que siempre es una ventaja. Sin embargo, este no es realmente un lugar en el que estoy en el deseo desesperado de volver demasiado rápido. El precio no es tan malo para el tamaño de la porción que recibes (siempre dejo lleno y siento que tengo mi dinero que vale), sin embargo, todo solo sabe a grasa, lo que solo te hace sentir enfermo por un corto tiempo después de salir. Pero mi preocupación general con hipopótamo gordo sería con respecto a su sistema de facturación hacia el final de su experiencia. Traje esto a la atención de los gerentes y traté de explicar que no hay información o aviso explicando o exhibiendo que me cobrarán doble impuesto por una bebida alcohólica en el menú que vi y él fue muy profesional en el manejo de mis preocupaciones y explicó que el impuesto tenía algo que ver con esto de ser una empresa inglesa? , sin embargo eso simplemente no tenía absolutamente ningún sentido para mí y me hizo más confuso. Al final del día, no es culpa del personal, solo están haciendo lo que se les ha dicho. En general, a pesar de que es barato y alegre y muy conveniente simplemente entrar y tomar una hamburguesa, siento que el proceso final realmente te deja con ganas de volver

is this how beef burger taste . waste of money. i ordered through lets eat. worst packaging everhwere the sauces were littering . the french fries didnt had close lid it was open bucket. where is hygiene. lastly after accepting all the taste of burger was so yuck i couldnt eat more then 2 bites . need refund please

Fantastic delivery, very fast and food still warm

I usually never complain about too much sauce but my burger had a lot of mustard so I couldn’t taste much of the patty, it tasted like mustard and pickle. The tater tots were good. I would say for that part of town the portion size is pretty good for the price. They have vegetarian and gluten free options.

Very very small burgers... Far away the picture with the reality. Obviously, one knows that normally there are few differences but in this case, nothing to do with it.... £16 for a very small burger. Taste good but, no worth... Could call skinny hippo ...

Was struck by how friendly the waiting staff were. Very polite and professional. The food was very tasty and the service was prompt though in no way seemed rushed. There was no sense of being hurried along at the end of the meal allowing us to chill and enjoy the meal
