The Smugglers Inn in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

Not the best roast. The only thing that was hot was the roast potatoes! Very disappointed as we had heard very good things about this Sunday roast. The guy who showed us to our table was abrupt, our table was in a dark area of the restaurant and we waited a while for desserts. Not the best experience

Just disappointing. So a generous two. I opted for a fancy modern gourmet 'smashed truffle' burger with bacon, cheese, rocket, etc (18 quid). Unfortunately I didn't google 'smashed truffle', which may explain why it didn't have any bacon, cheese, rocket etc. That'll teach me. My wife had what was probably pie. It all felt a bit moribund. Like seeing a dead rabbit in the road or a broken vase. On the plus side, whatever it was that I ate didn't stick around long, if you know what I mean. And they're nice to dogs.

I have been coming here for a long time and they never let me down. Always looked after well as i am a coeliac and can only eat giuten free food. Good safe meals and good service. As a coeliac im trying to let others know where it is safe to eat while out and about.

My partner and I went to the Smugglers for our first valentines dinner and the whole experience was superb!! The food was stunning; our duck was perfectly pink and succulent, the veggies were delicious and the long stemmed broccoli was Al Dante. We had mussels for starters which were divine and a beautiful molten chocolate desert. The service was first class, the staff were efficient, friendly and couldn’t do more for you. I highly recommend!!!

Booked a Sunday lunch,due to local flooding prices had been reduced. I had the large roast for £10! What a bargain and what a feast! ..Yorkshire puds were huge ,meats well cooked and plentiful.... We have travelled to Downderry every year for 5 years now from Spain,and I always walk my dog and end up here! ( can't think why!,).. always a warm welcome and a nice well served pint of ale.! A great place to visit any time of year.

Lovely welcome from Ryan., dogs made most welcome. Fab lunch, I had the butternut squash soup which was truly scrupulous, only criticism was the bowl was to small. A very pleasant evening in their comfortable dining room with good food and cheerful efficient service. Quite a few things on the menu were not available so for this reason only they lose a star. Attention to my partner's gluten and dairy free diet was excellent and his portion of ham egg and chips was enormous, my chillie was a big enough portion with loads of sour cream. They even managed a pudding for him, which is often a problem.

Had the carvery here as a takeaway. They were very accommodating of my request for just veg and to takeaway. The food was excellent and easy to carry to my accommodation just up the road. Booking essential. You can call in to book or phone. The restaurant was busy and there was a little que for the carvery. I would recommend this pub. Very friendly which is nice when you're travelling on your own.

Pub was 500 mtrs from our holiday cottage. Very dog friendly, so Dexter felt at home. Choice of cask ales was limited at the time of our visit. Food was excellent, good prices and good portions. Staff were friendly and attentive to our dog !!

Fantastic service from the staff. Really welcoming on this wet and windy afternoon. Fish pie was amazing and the portion sizes are more than generous, well worth the money. Soph was an excellent waitress and we’ll definitely be back again

Visited here three times during a weeks holiday staying in Downderry. Great location and a lovely walk along beach to get there. First visit was for a Sunday carvery which was one of the best we have ever had, the roast beef (as were all the meats) was delicious and not burnt to a crisp like most carveries offer. The roast potatoes were amazing also. Great service and really friendly staff serving us throughout all visits. The salads are amazing as is the lasagne. Really pleased we found this gem of a pub and will definitely be returning when next in Cornwall. They also treat dogs like vips and clearly advertise it is a dog friendly pub (for all you moaners that dogs barking etc) Thank you.

We visited for takeaway during a stay in Downderry - ordered 2 burgers ands some loaded fries for £50, and the quality was below that of McDonald's... By quite a large margin, actually. My partner enjoyed the BBQ pulled pork burger, so not all bad, but the chips were what you'd expect from a local takeaway for a few quid and the big one burger I got was burnt to a crisp, I couldn't taste anything, so binned it. Not great, and a robbery at £50.

Came here with family for a birthday meal. Place was really busy, but staff were very helpful, even decorated our table for us, simple but a nice touch! Food was excellent, especially Fish and Chips and The Big Burger, which was scrummy! Would definitely recommend, and we'll be back!!

We went for dinner and checked before hand that there was enough on the menu suitable for a person with Coeliac disease. The separate fryer was broken. Very limited choice ie jacket potatoe. But the whole meal for 4 of use was awful. In fact inedible. Rubbish kitchen. Never again.

I would advise not to go here if you are diagnosed with Coeliac Disease. They advertise as gluten free, but they cannot cater. My meal came out as not an allergy order, it had non gluten food on the plate, even though the waitress put it through as an allergy order to the kitchen. The menu should not have the gluten free symbol on. The food was terrible quality and they got our drinks order wrong.

After a lovely walk on the near by beach we had booked for Sunday lunch. The carvery was top notch and very generous. The veg was steaming hot and first class. Giant Yorkshire clearly home made. Definitely be back.

We were disppointed on this visit. The service was not the best with us having to prompt the waitress a couple of times for various things. Drinks were forgotten also. The quality of the food was mediocre at best and hugely overpriced for what it was. We don't mind paying a bit more if the food warrants it, but it absolutely did not. Such a shame as the Sunday roast knocks spots off others but they cannot carry it over to the evening standards.

We love this place, the staff are always friendly, nothing is too much. Chef Paul surprised me tonight with the pie of the day. I love pie like literally love pie and this pie he made oh my days!!!! Pork apple and cider…………to die for. Thank you for your creativity.

A bustling dog walker friendly pub. Plenty of space inside and out, but very popular even on a cold damp day so booking is recommended. Great real ale. The fantastic carvery and the friendly staff really made this meal one to remember.

What an amazing find! Popped in for lunch on a cold winters day in January. Service and food top notch. It was surprisingly busy for this time of year, which shows they must be doing everything right, good choice on the menu, not fussy food, just good honest,well priced pub grub. The barperson was doing a grand job on her own, serving food and drinks.... and topping up the fire..,.all with a smile on her face. Would definitely recommend if you're visiting Seaton, which is also lovely!

Me and my partner had the carvery roast and it was lovely so tasty and hot. I would highly recommend this place the staff are so friendly. They also done a doggy roast for my pooch which is always a winner. Their desert menu is also a look at as I had the apple crumble and it was probably the best one I’ve had. Will definitely be returning.

Been to this pub on a few occasions, whether that be to listen to a band, the ‘cider festival’, or just for dinner. Friendly staff, great atmosphere, close to the beach & good food 👍

Superb family Sunday roast. Great to have the option also of the main and children’s menu. The roast was huge even for the regular, all the veg you could wish for and three meat choices. Staff were all superb and paid extra special attention to me being gluten free. The drinks were all great with delicious red wine. Thank you Smugglers!

Visited The Smugglers Inn today and had an excellent all round experience. We had an excellent welcome, the service was first class and the food was really well presented and excellent quality. The Chef, Paul, was very pleasant and helpful and the food he presented was probably the best we have had for a long time. Mine was from the specials board and we are looking forward to returning in the near future. Really recommend a visit

Lovely pub, visited a couple of times whilst on holiday nearby. Food was amazing and staff are very friendly. The dog loved her visit too! Board games available which our kids enjoyed and we spent a wonderful afternoon by the fire playing games. Will definitely return ☺️

We had a great lunch at the Smugglers inn whilst on holiday close by. We would definitely recommend. We initially came for a drink and to escape the rain, but we all ended up getting lunch, including the dog (thanks to Paul the chef) who ate his Sunday roast meat in seconds. Staff very friendly, and there was a lovely fire which was very welcoming on a chilly day.

The staff were under a lot of pressure but we weren’t sure why as there were only a few tables occupied. Our order for food took 30 minutes to just be taken and then the meals all arrived at different times with 25 mins between the first and last. We had to send two back because they were stone cold and one was completely wrong. The staff were polite but seemed obviously stressed. We wouldn’t visit again.

Stopped for lunch after a walk on the beach with our dog. Extensive menu and specials board. Ordered the cod fish cakes as a main and the pie of the day.
