Wow. What can I say? I stayed at the Smugglers last minute as I was going to a party in the village and didn't want to have to drive home. The room was immaculate, the bed was so comfortable, the selection of teas and coffees is great, the room had everything I needed. The hosting is fantastic and the choice at breakfast is fab! I'm a local and I can't believe I have never found this absolute gem before. I will 100% be recommending this place to everyone!

Newlyn’s fishing boats below in the harbour were bathed in evening light when we chose our meals. Just one sitting for dinner at 18.30 within a classic, unpretentious Cornish restaurant. The menu presented some problems because everything on it sounded so interesting and inviting. Our starters were generous and beautifully presented: catch of the day lemon sole gougons, grilled mackerel with horseradish ice cream. The mains were every bite as good. I can’t remember enjoying a meal this much for a long time - every mouthful of my hake with smoked chowder was delicious and my husband enjoyed his perfectly-cooked sea bass with a generous portion of mussels too. It felt as though we’d been served a special treat by straightforward friends. Thank you, Smugglers Restaurant and rooms.

My husband and I are from the US, visiting British family for a week in Cornwall. We’re staying in Newlyn, and just decided to try dinner here. So delighted we did. The dining room was lovely with a view of the harbor. We each tried different main dishes and were all very happy with out choices! The food was exceptional… not trendy but not ordinary… thoughtfully presented, tasty and satisfying. Service provided by Amy enhanced the experience. Thoroughly enjoyed.

We stayed here for 4 nights in May 2021 and loved it - we are already planning our next trip back. The owners are really kind and accommodating, as were the other staff we met. Our room was really large with a lovely bathroom and lots of conveniences like a kettle, tea/coffee, biscuits. The bed was really comfortable and the view we had was absolutely spectacular (we stayed in 'Harbour View'). I can't fault anything about our stay; the Covid restrictions didn't impede us in any way, but we did feel very safe and there were clear regulations and guidance. It was FANTASTIC, and would always recommend! The breakfast was also fantastic, a great range of cooked breakfast which was lovely every time.

My husband and I were stuck for where to go in Penzance for a good fish dish. We checked this place out online and thought it was worth a look. Well we were not disappointed. It is not a cool, vibey restaurant but if you want some of the best food in Penzance/Newlyn then this is the place to goI had red snapper and my husband had lemon sole and bother dishes were incredible. Great chilled white wine and I didnt have pudding but my husband had the clotted cream ice cream and it was WOW! We were so shocked the restaurant wasn't completly booked out. Apparently people had booked and failed to turn up- well they missed out. For the prices paid this was Amazing quality food. Incredibly tasty, some innovative choices and impeccable service. As a non meat eater the vege option was limited...but as I eat fish it was fine I was spoilt. Cant wait to return on my next trip. Also lovely harbour view. Slightly annoying that there is only one set dinner time we had to arrange our days/holiday plans around it but in hindsight was totally worth it.

Saddened to see how the owners respond to any critical reviews on here. Instead of a gracious acknowledgement that the diners may not have had the best experience the responses are very defensive and ill-tempered.We too ate here recently and felt the experience fell short of the five stars given by so many. The food was good without being exceptional but the general ambience was lacking with a sense that the evening was coming to an early end from 8.30 with people leaving and table linen being changed around us.Covid-19 has sadly impacted many of our lives adversely but is not a reason for justifying brusque customer service as was offered in a recent response by the owner. A little humility and courtesy goes a long way. Rather than dismissing critical reviews - please accept them as possible suggestions of making a good business great again. Complacency and relying on past reputation is not healthy.

We had an ok experience. Staff were friendly. Our food was ok. The cod was a bit overcooked but flavours good. The Muscadet white wine was not a particularly good example which is a shame as a good Muscadet can be found at a reasonable price. Also the Sancere, although priced at £28 pounds, it also wasn’t a very good example. We had to arrive at 6:30pm and were asked to leave when we were still sat down at 9pm. Overall, it was ok.

Due to Covid restrictions only one sitting was available commencing at 6.30 p.m. The tables were set apart and it felt very safe to be a visitor. My wife and I being avid fish eaters we settled down to our starters, she to a Salmon and crab dish and myself to sardines. This has to be the best restaurant by far in Newlyn and probably this whole area of Cornwall. We dropped in during our first day of holiday and were lucky to get a table. The food was so delicious and the service from Bryony so good that we begged for a table on the last night of our stay and asked if the chef would be happy to cook a fillet steak (off menu) as a special treat. He agreed, so we arrived again tonight and had a sumptuous meal - starters smoked salmon and Newlyn crab for my wife and baked aubergine with feta cheese and beetroot for me. Both delicious !Mains were seabass fillets with samphire and mussels for my wife and two delicious fillet steaks for me. Incredible !Steve, the chef should have praise indeed for his superb cooking and Bryony once again excelled with service. When we are in Cornwall again this is the first booking we will make. Don't just take our word for it - book now !!

We had a wonderful dinner at The Smugglers during our holiday in Newlyn. The food was exceptional and amazing value for money especially given all the ingredients were of such high quality, fresh out of the sea. To start we had monkfish goujons and the special which was newlyn crab and smoked salmon. For mains we had the blackened cod and another special, sea bass fillets with mussels, samphire and creamy potatoes in a tasty parsley sauce. The portions were very generous but so delicious that we polished off every drop. We shared a lemon posset to finish which was also lovely. Highly recommend this place - it’s a fantastic find. The tastiest fresh seafood with a lovely view over the harbour. Couldn’t ask for any better on a seaside holiday!

What a find! The food was inventive, fresh and so delicious! Excellent food and very reasonably priced. We were staying in Mousehole and everything was booked out for dinner so we went further afield. We walked both ways and stopped off at the Red Lion (very friendly and booked to come for a meal later in the week). What I don’t understand is why there was only two tables of two there. It should have been full when the food is so good! It’s not pretentious, service is sincere and helpful - possibly because it’s a little dated looking from the outside people don’t step in - my advice is you’re missing out. As we are here for a week we’ve booked in for another meal - can’t wait! Thanks

We decided to return to The Smugglers after thirty years away and we weren't disappointed. We stayed in the Forbes room and found it perfect for us for a Monday to Wednesday break. The view is fabulous from the restaurant where we were spoilt for choice at the breakfast menu. I tried the full breakfast one morning and didn't need to eat again until later on that evening. The smoked fish omelette was also delightful. Sarah, who served us at breakfast, has an encyclopedic knowledge of the area and offers some great advice on where to visit. The real star of The Smugglers is the evening menu where first class food is on offer and extremely good service from Bryony. The sardines are perfect as is the mackerel with horseradish ice cream. We both had the Sea Bass for our main and was exceptional. Unfortunately the restaurant is not open Monday or Tuesday or we would have eaten there every evening. I cannot praise the food and service highly enough but make sure you book the restaurant as soon as you know you are staying.

We were recommended to eat here during our stay in Mousehole and we were not disappointed. We received a warm welcome and were soon making the difficult decision as to what to order. Viewing dishes as they were brought into the dining room did not make the choice easy as they all looked amazing. We finally made our choices and could not have been happier with the decisions. Needless to say, the fish could not have been fresher or more tasty as it is caught and bought in Newlyn. The food here is great. Very well prepared and served. Having just about given up eating out due to overpricing and mediocre food we were a bit reluctant to try yet another restaurant. We were very pleasantly surprised by the whole experience at The Smugglers. From the telephone call to book a table through to the after dinner coffee and cognac everything was just as it should be. The food was very well presented and tasty and thankfully it wasn't the usual stack of miniscule vegetables and chips served on a roofing slate...this was good old fashioned, plentiful food cooked to perfection. I rarely eat 3 full courses but it was so good here that I had everything. Also surprisingly, the drinks were actually cheaper than some of the pubs in the area!!Vegetarians are well catered for and it's not just the usual "option". We had fish but the vegetarian offerings looked really interesting and well thought out.I couldn't recommend this place more highly and we'll definitely be back when they re-open in the spring. I'm not the sort to post reviews unless it's really poor or amazing and this is definitely in the amazing category. I will be sure to come back here again next time I'm in the area.

What a lovely meal we had here! The food was amazing and the staff were very helpful. Although I'm not sure of her name the waitress that helped us was really amazing and we would like to thank her for a lovely evening and for sorting out a taxi for us on the way back.

We stayed here for 4 nights May 16, the room was very large, comfy, own courtyard and loads of tea, coffee and biscuits. Bed was very comfy if a little too warm. Breakfast was amazing, had Dinner on 2 nights, very good, the fish soup and veg soup were the best we have ever had. Did not have room to try the desserts as portions are on the large side. Would highly recommend both staying and eating here, Stephen is a excellent chef and Barbara the owner /waitress, oracle of the bus time tables and places to visit is just great. Thank you so much for making are mini break a great one....

We were a party of 4 visiting midweek. We were the only people in the restaurant, so unsurprisingly service was good, but our waitress had a lovely manner.Starters were mixed - the feta with aubergine was pronounced excellent with flavours that really complemented each other, the fish and shellfish was quite nice although felt it would have been better if it had pieces of seafood rather than being a smooth soup. The sardines were fine; the duck liver pate was ok, but both it and the accompanying salad garnish were VERY cold - straight from the fridge, which blunted the flavours. The dressing was very sharp.Mains: the hake on rosemary potatoes was 'delicious', the lemon sole with prawns and asparagus was very nice, though the butter and lemon sauce could have done with a little less dressing, the braised steak with roast carrots was meltingly tender and very tasty. Portions of all were generous.Puds - the trio of homemade ice creams was mixed: the vanilla and the mixed berry were both pronounced very good, the chocolate with salt and cookies was oversalted and not particularly rated. The creme brulee was well bruleed, but the creme was over thick, almost cheesecake consistency, which spoiled it. The accompanying 'plum compote' was a plum cut in half, either cooked or marinaded it was difficult to say, and again very cold. One of our party pronounced it 'very nice', another couldn't eat it, and another tried it and pronounced it tasted like cough medicine! One mistake in the service (veg soup brought instead of fish soup) was immediately rectified with apology, which was no problem. The dining room was rather cool - it felt like the temperature would have been right for a busier evening when having more bodies would have warmed it up more. We were seated in the window so had a good view out to the harbour which very pleasant.

The Smugglers offer the best food in the area. If you go to the pub nearby, you might even meet one of the fishermen who actually caught your food in the morning. In London, it would cost over £100, here it's 50. The service is also great, the woman serving us was adorable. The wine is also totally decent.

We stayed at The Smugglers for B and B whilst walking The Coastal Path. Stephen and Barbara were very welcoming. The room was lovely, beautifully decorated with our own patio outside the room. To top our B and B experience we had the best breakfast I've had in a long time. The whole experience was really fantastic.

Both myself and my wife dined at the restaurant during a recent visit to mousehole. The seafood was to die for with the best tasting scallops that I have ever had. My wife doesn't eat seafood however that was no problem as she had the steak which was perfect. The selections of desert was also impressive and tasted fantastic. Lovely place. Would recommend and certainly return.

Very warmly welcomed, Barbara is an excellent host and very friendly - it's clear she has a genuine passion for her business and guests. The room was comfortable, clean and had all the facilities you'd expect. The bed and pillows were exceptionally comfortable and there was plenty of tea and coffee available. The seagulls can be heard almost round the clock but personally, I actually like their sound and being so close to a working harbour, it's only to be expected. Car parking was limited to the pay and display but it's only a short walk away and the charges aren't unreasonable. Tip: download the 'Ringo' phone app beforehand and you can pay online anytime without having to go to and from the car park to feed the meter.Unforunately we arrived on a Sunday and stayed for only two nights so we didn't get a chance to try an evening meal in the restaurant but if the breakfast is any indicator, I'm sure the food is top quality.Overall, a highly enjoyable stay in a superb location made all the more pleasant by plenty of sunshine!I last stayed at the hotel 29 years ago but I won't leave it so long until I return and I'd encourage anyone who wants to experience a great stay at a reasonable price to give it a try. You won't be disappointed!

We were looking for a decent fish restaurant in Newlyn and walked past the Smugglers on our way to a pub down the road, after a quick drink we decided on the Smugglers which turned out to be top rate as described by other reviews. The Hake was £15.95 and Lemon Sole £15.50.Parking in the area is terrible and the Smugglers is on a section of road overlooking the harbour, you need to park down the hill where the port entrance is.They also do B&B, it looked pretty comfortable and friendly.Newlyn is a typical small fishing port on the West side of Penzance. Have driven through a few times but as parking is so bad have not stopped before.

Having walked past a few times during the week and seen the Smugglers busy we called in on an afternoon and booked a table for the evening. We were greeted by Barbara on arrival, and offered a choice of tables overlooking Newlyn harbour - the restaurant really couldn't be better situated for watching the boats from which your dinner arrived a few hours earlier!I started with Newlyn crab and smoked salmon which was delicious - a lovely combination of rich smoked salmon and the freshest white crab, with a clean, zesty lemon dressing. Other half's starter was scallops with couscous. Scallops were perfect, but the couscous was less convincing mainly as it was so cold - probably left in the fridge a bit too late before service.Mains were hake with parmesan mash, asparagus, roast fennel for Mrs B, and seafood platter for me. Hake was delicious, and the parmesan mash the best Mrs B has ever had. Portion was very generous too.My seafood platter consisted of scallops, hake and lemon sole fillets. Scallops were again very well cooked indeed. Hake came with what tasted like a caper based tapenade which worked really well, and the lemon sole fillets were accompanied by samphire which I love. There was also a generous portion of Cornish new potatoes which were sweet in taste, simply cooked and which complemented the rest perfectly.Dessert was a creme brulee to (sort of) share: Barbara insisted that Mrs B have a spoon despite my best effort at selfishness. Again simply done, with strawberries accompanying, but deliciously creamy and a good end to a scrumptious meal.Including a good bottle of wine the whole bill was less than £90 so excellent value. Barbara even saved us from the schoolboy error of trying to visit St Michael's Mount on a Saturday (it's closed Saturdays). All in all this was an excellent meal of the freshest ingredients, primarily the local fish, cooked really, really well. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area - I'm sure we'd be regulars if we were local.

This is week #2 of 13 weeks at 13 holiday homes in the UK. We discovered The Smugglers on Tuesday and had a phenomenal meal in warm, gracious perfectly appointed surroundings and booked again for an equally delightful experience on Friday. We've eaten well all over the world and The Smugglers rates a 10 of 10 in our book. a once-a-trip experience. This is undoubtedly the finest restaurant for dinner in Penzance/Newlyn regardless of its rating in TA.

On a family holiday in Newlyn previous occupants of our rental cottage had recommended the Smugglers. We had walked past a few times and thought it looked quite nice. My partner had been so disappointed not to find any Cornish sardines in Cornwall that when he rang to book our table he asked if they were available. Immediately Barbara said she would get them and was so helpful and friendly on the phone that we were pretty impressed before we even entered the Smugglers. Perhaps a little dated, but very clean with beautifully laid tables. Barbara, the owner, served us and couldn't have been more accommodating, tailoring the menu for my children. My scallop starter was good but my generous blackened cod main was excellent. My partner's long anticipated sardines were perfect. The desserts were particularly good, with the various ice creams home made by Barbara's husband, the chef.A great location over looking the harbour and St Michael's Mount in the distance, very good food and truly exemplary service made this the best meal of our holiday.

We were touring around Cornwall, so booked one nights stay in this restaurant with rooms, our bedroom was gorgeous, it's situated at the back of the building unfortunately no sea view, the room was very big, with a huge en suite, it was immaculate with a comfy bed, the only negative was the TV, the signal wasn't very good.We booked a table for that evening in the restaurant, the menu is only small, but the food was gorgeous, we both started with the scallops, which were huge and very tasty, the main course we had the pork which was also very tasty, we finished off with the chocolate delight pudding, again it was lovely.Next morning we had breakfast, again it was very tasty and lots of it.The owner was very friendly and made us feel very welcome, we would definitely eat/ stay here again.

They had had a big party cancel and were going to close but agreed to accommodate us when we rang to book (had the place to ourselves) Lovely view over the harbour in Newlyn .The owner/waitress (she and her husbamd came down from London 12 years ago) was very friendly and the food , cooked by her husband, was lovely , satisfying even the strict vegetarian amongst us. Daughter and I shared a main course of two fish , scallops (divine) and veggies £22.50 and plenty, especially if you were having a starter and wanted room for pudding .With decent wine ,a three course meal came to only £25 a head . Do seek it out . We were staying only doors away but it would be easy to miss (there is a car park a little further up on the right- it's a steep walk up from the 'town')They have three rooms too .

The Smugglers is easy to miss because it is situated on the narrow road looking over Newlyn harbour which makes it difficult to put up display boards, but we're glad we found it and would recommend it to others for sure. Newlyn harbour is always interesting, with plenty of boat movements happening and on the evening that we visited it was at the end of a sunny day when the visibility was pin-sharp, so it was great to be able to enjoy the wonderful view from our table. The service from the lady owner was very attentive and the food was really good. Megrim sole and hake were beautifully cooked, the sole being presented whole and on the bone. If anything, the hake was a tad generous for a small lady to eat! The only slight criticism might be that the veg were a bit unimaginative, just potatoes and peas which though well prepared, remain just potatoes and peas.Starters had been scallops simply served at our request and a lovely shellfish soup. The crème brulee with spiced plums was spot-on, not too heavy on the spicing. The atmosphere was low-key as there was only another couple in to begin with, but a party of French visitors arrived which livened things up.Given the quality of the food and service, together with the view, the prices are pretty keen so a revisit is a must.

We stayed for two nights here and ate on one night - probably would have eaten on the second night but the restaurant was closed on the Sunday.Very friendly small place overlooking the fishing harbour and out towards the bay - the staff were great and the food was delicious. Mostly fish (no great surprise there) but a few meat dishes too and they had some wonderful mussels as a special - best I've had in ages.Well worth a visit.

We visited The Smugglers after reading a foodie review in one of the Cornish Magazines/Papers left in our holiday cottage. We booked a table on the basis that the review read well, and sounded child friendly, with a good view of Newlyn Harbour. Unfortunately for us, the evening that we had booked the weather was dreadful, stormy with heavy rain. There appeared to be no parking at, or very close to The Smugglers. So we parked at the harbour, and walked back up the hill. On arrival, it was apparent that we were the only diners that were expected. For some, that may not be such a plus point than it for us, it definitely works as more of a plus. Firstly, there are enough of us to create our own atmosphere, secondly the adults get to relax, (as we don't need to worry about the children being too noisy, so as to offend fellow diners!) The front of house lady came out to warmly greet us, she was absolutely lovely, could not do enough for all of us and came from the East end of London, but shamefully I cannot remember her name. She guided us through the menu, and the evening specials. She advised us on the options for children, which thankfully did not just consist of the sausages, chicken nuggets, fish fingers type junk that you so often find at restaurants. We ordered some adult main courses, split between our two youngest children, no amount of rejigging around with their menu to satisfy our children, perturbed them at all. The food come out, and everything ordered was absolutely delicious, and beautifully presented. I think the dessert called 'The Chocolate Plate' was the one which was greedily devoured, and enjoyed by most of us. Totally loved this place. Would certainly return when next back in the area, and would very highly recommend a visit!

We were on holiday for a week but my husband and myself ate here twice. We were served by Izzy and Indie who were a credit to the restaurant, lovely ladies. Our meal was lovely. Shout out to Max, who was the chef who cooked our meal. I must say that the in house made bread is fantastic. My husband said it was the best bread he had ever tasted! The foccacia style bread was a refreshing change from the sourdough you seem to be given everywhere. It's a small restaurant with great food and great views so make sure you book if you want to dine here. Thanks for a lovely evening x

Have a takeaway fish and chips most weeks. Opened the box to find a ridiculous fish portion, thought that we had been given a childs size,it was so small, hake was 10 pounds and cod 7,with chips and peas came to best part of 30 pounds. Shame but at that price ,you would expect a half decent fish, won't be ordering again
