Old fashioned, down to earth cafe/restaurant. Hearty plate-fulls of what granny used to serve. Great selections of traditional English meals plus exotics on offer as well. Very busy over lunch-time. Excellent value. Great personal service

Very friendly and service is brilliant . I go for breakfast. And it best place to go for breakfast in south shields town. It comes out hot . And get more than elsewhere . If there anything on the breakfast you don't like tell them no. To whatever you don't like and they offer you something extra we'll worth you all to go in try for yourself

Always come in here and get the same thing every time, although I get it all the time it never fails to outstand me with the taste. Lovely service and really friendly staff, feel very comfortable and welcome here will forever return!

Absolutely loved my dinner! Everything is home made. You get good amount of portion sizes. I highly recommend this place if you have baby's or toddlers and need to feed them aswell. Easy access to go to. Very spacious for your prams to go to . You can also eat outside. Food arrives fast and it's so hot. And it's very cheap. You are aloud to take away if you end up being full to. Thanks again.

A proper old school cafe with nice food at a reasonable price. Can find them on just eat as well and if your eating in there's always a warm welcome waiting for you.

My wife and I called in to Smithy's just for a coffee on the eve of the Great North Run. We could not have received a more friendly welcome anywhere, including our native East Anglia! Nice all-day breakfast on offer and another customer we saw had the daily special of pie chips and gravy which looked very appetising. Several other customers were obviously regulars and were well happy too. If ever in South Shields again will definitely make this a pit stop. Prices are very reasonable as well.

Came in and ordered mince pie , chips and gravy,, and finished off with a cup of tea ,, The service was quick and well priced and really friendly and the food is tasty and fantastic and well worth it ,, even the tea was the right colour and it’s things like that what makes you come back,, It’s like going back in time to the real old style cafes ,, great stuff 👍

Popped in for a take away whilst working down South Shields, nice little cafe, fokd fresh and the owner or manager, chatting awat to everyone who came in.

Went to the cafe on Saturday and the breakfast was amazing you could tell the food wasn’t frozen it was fresh!! The waitress was lovely and was always smiling! We are definitely coming back.

Food was amazing and I had a lovely selection of dishes that I wanted to order. I went with the Chilli, rice, chips and nachos which was very very nice. The staff were all lovely and made sure I was looked after.

Food was alright but my drink was mising

Only got a star because it wouldn't let me put 0 stars but 2 hour wait and they ring me back asking for my address to send my food in a taxi. When food finally came it was nice but very small portions for the price

I can cook better at home, waste of money. Food is more dry than my elbows.

Love this cafe. We often visit when we are down town , since having our twins we can’t fit in now so we order offline, food always beautiful , lovely and hot and not long waiting! We love it here xx

Very poor, very small portion of mince, potatoe tasted like smash(powderd)peas hard, carrots & dumpling only descent things on plate, def not worth £8.50 more like a childs portion!.... sorry but wont be ordering again from here what a total disapointment!

Fantastic gem of a restaurant hidden under the South Shields metro. Fantastic service and food was great we will visit again.

Been going here for years, Gutted with this order normally it's spot on but I ordered chicken curry and rice with no chips as the elderly lady it was for can't eat them, £8 they charged for this and what arrived was shocking. Tiny portion to start for £8 and most of the rice was still hard, Lost a regular customer.

Food was delicious had already tried the breakfasts so me and a mate tried a lasagna and a corned beef pie with mash, mash was smooth all food was piping hot and lush to have now the cold weather is coming in, can't wait to try more stuff from here

Good variety of meals at reasonable prices

Called in today for the first time while out shopping. Toasted sandwiches were lovely. Very friendly staff and clean environment. Will definitely return as I want to try their full english.

Was up from London and after having a terrible breakfast somewhere else, have to say I was more than impressed with not only the breakfast but service recieved. Staff were so lovely. I would recommend to anyone and the price is so cheap compared to what I'm used to paying. Would travel all the way up just for the breakfast 10/10

Go in a couple of times a week for the full English breakfast, which is absolutely delicious (especially the black pudding) and at a great price. Staff very welcoming and friendly.

Great breakfast happy smiling staff, as for the review made by daniel moyse, the steps (2 of them) would make it extremely difficult to gain entry by wheelchair, i find his comments very harsh as i know the staff and management at smithys would bend over backwards to accommodate disabled people ♿😊

Absolutely digusted at the service in this Place! My mam, nanna and little handicapable cousin came to this cafe today to be turned away because my cousin was in a WHEELCHAIR! Appalling, to be discriminated against for having a disability and not being able to walk. You should be highly ashamed of the way you are running this establishment!

Fab home cooked food proper little english cafe pitty there's not more of them left highly recommend the full English they also do proper fresh orange in the glass bottle spot on place best get there early for a seat as it's a hugely popular cafe very friendly down to earth owner who seems to know all his regulars and what they like to eat and drink keep up the good work.

After popping in to the Customs House in South Shields only to be met with terrible service and promptly leaving we looked for another Cafe and ended up here. It is a no frills 'old school' cafe but clean, welcoming, great food at excellent prices. Forget your chain coffee shops and so called bistros selling cheap frozen fodder at inflated prices. Go to this place, behind the Metro station in town centre. Excellent.

The staff in this place are very freindly and helpful Two coffees one scone with butter jam and crean £ 4.50 where can you get value like that but Smithys and the scone was lovely.

Well the best fish and chips in South Shields. The staff are very friendly and the prices are good. Would really recommend this place.

A dowdy little cafe that serves very cheap food. The food is nothing to write home about but it is tasty and hot, the staff are okish but not over friendly. Would only go back again if in desperate need of something to eat that is freshly cooked for you.

I had the chicken curry and my boyfriend had the cheese and bacon burger and the food was of good quality, plenty of meat in the curry aswell would recommed to anyone, they have children's meals too

Very arroagant owner but the other staff make up for his rudeness, food is for the bottom end of the food chain regards to cafes & restaurants. I was waiting for my girlfriend & her children to have breakfast, when he made a rude comment. As the saying goes, you only pay for what you get, well it's exactly that. Wont be going back. Very rude & arrogant owner.

cheap little cafe local to south shields metro, bit like a poor mans cafe but ok food. the food is mega cheap and seating at a table is provided food is freshly cooked and tastes like mum used to make when you were back home

PT :-) and I stumbled across this cafe when we lived in South Shields and would always go for our breakfast on a weekend. Their good honest home cooked food speaks for itself and I have never been disappointed with the standard or the service. I've introduced my friends to Smithies too and they love it as much as I do. Now PT :-) and I have moved away we crave the same standard of food but have been mainly let down by other cafes outside the area. Now whenever we revisit Shields we always pop in to say hello and have a couple of what we like to call 'dirty egg butties' double egg and mushroom for PT :-) and egg, bacon and mushroom for me; all washed down with a Ringtons tea... Doesn't get much better than that. Fantastic food, great service and really great prices will have us returning and recommending until we're blue in the face. Keep up the great work guys. SW :-)

Love the atmosphere in this place. So lively and the customer service is fantastic! You always feel welcome here, thats not mentioning the price of the food! Exceptional value and all their specials are freshly made!
