Wanted to treat my very good friend to lunch at the six bells. Food was good but the service was awful. Asked for an Irish coffee & was refused on the grounds they were closing in 15minutes! When my friend said she could have drunk it in that time she was told that the woman didn't know how to make one. Felt very uncomfortable. Apparently she is the manager. Very poor customer service. Will not be going back.

We visited Six Bells last year (septmber) and last week, when on a break in LavenhamWe loved it on both visits! The menu is ever changing and has so many options, including vegan and vegetarian. Home made pies, crab salad, seasonal produce and a mouthwatering dessert menu including a fantastic wine and beers list.I cannot believe it was not more packed! this is a hidden gem. The lady behind the counter (owner?) is friendly and professional and there's a large car park too.

Went to The Six Bells for a couple of Friday night pints. Great atmosphere, lovely staff and friendly locals. Could have dined in, but had plans for movie night at home, so ordered a takeaway fish and chips. Delighted with the result. Good sized portions of hand cut chips, enormous battered fish and sides of home-made mushy peas and tartare sauce, complete with grilled lemons. Survived the journey home - delicious!

We sat in the garden and had lunch. I really don’t want to be unkind after a really tough year for the hospitality business and to be fair the staff were very pleasant and concerned but our lunch wasn’t great. Gritty, unwashed, dull salads, overcooked fish, dull, badly prepared and uninspired food. We rarely complain because it does tend to ruin the whole experience but the unwashed salads were actually inedible. One thing, the hamburger was good and there were people obviously enjoying their Sunday roasts. Perhaps they had a stand in because the chef was away; I hope so.

Visited this pub for an early birthday dinner with my husband. It’s a lovely ‘proper’ pub serving good real ale, and the food offering is varied and of a good quality. We enjoyed our starters & mains. But our dinner experience was constantly interrupted by a really annoying dog that persistently barked who was sat at a close by table with a family. Would have enjoyed it more without this interruption.

Our first visit to the Six Bells, from the initial booking throughout our lunch we were made to comfortable and valued as customers. COVID protocols were obvious, in place and used. A good choice of well kept real ale and lagers, I can personally recommend the Wherry . A good range of meals on the menu, amongst our group we had Scampi, Brisket Bugger, fish & chips and lamb rump, all of which were thoroughly enjoyed. We plan to return in the not too distant future.

It’s so great to be able to visit the Six Bells again, and always worth the short trip. Whether eating inside or in the lovely gardens, the atmosphere is wonderfully relaxed and the service efficient and very friendly.Aperitifs in the gardens, then inside to eat. Through starters, main course with fine wine, the meal was absolutely beautiful in cooking, taste and presentation all befitting a class restaurant, and the modest cost delivered fantastic value. And all in such a gorgeous pub which hasn’t been upstaged by pretention and vogue taste, and the chef and owners know they’re running an upmarket pub with excellent dining, not a minimalist art gallery with your meal as an exhibit. You will not leave still hungry and you’ll be able to afford the taxi home. So, if you want a real proper pub with proper food, get over to Preston St Mary where they do it right without the song and dance.

This was the first time in 13 months that we had eaten out since the first lockdown began. We were delighted to do so at our local pub; #TheSixBellsSo great that the garden is so spacious and the tables all at a safe distance from each other. We were under the marquee which was a bonus as there were a few showers. Most importantly, the food, as always, was superb. Good choice for vegetarians and my steak and ale pie was excellent. Well spaced tables efficient but no officious service and a feeling that they were doing everything to keep people safe.Moving onto the food and drink, the menu has been simplified since our last visit and is all the better for it. Prices have also been cut so it is excellent value. Superb mussels in a cider cream sauce to start followed by a venison chille which was different but equally excellent. Hopefully this review will help improve things. We had eaten here a few months ago and had a good meal. We went on Thursday which is ‘burger’ night. I had a burger, first thing that struck me was the bun that looked like it came from the local supermarket. I had about half a dozen thick chips and a small slaw that was unremarkable. My wife had a ‘Mac and cheese’ I.e. a huge plate of pasta with a bit of cheese on it. She had a side of spicy wedges that were greasy and simply had a spice powder poured over them. The pasta was dry and there was no quibble over not charging us for it when we mentioned it. The pub is charming, Preston st. Mary is delightful. It’s a shame that the food we had wouldn’t warrant the 25 minute drive to go there again. It wasn’t expensive but I wish I was able to praise rather than criticise.

We arrived for dinner at the Six Bells at 2000 hrs. The young staff were polite and pleasant throughout but there may not have been enough of them. Starters were slow to arrive and the 'home made' tomato soup tasted as though it was from a catering tin - OK but not home made. It was 2100 hrs before our main course came. Mine was fish pie - over hot and with dried broccoli on top. It would probably have been fine if it hadn't been left under a grill and forgotten about. The experience could have been so much better.

We haven't eaten at the Six Bells for a long time but decided to give it another try since we are hearing good things. We went in for lunch and everything started so well. Warm and friendly welcome, nice atmosphere although it was quiet. We were given a lovely table by the fire. A drinks order was taken at the table and brought to us while we looked at the menu. We weren't overly excited by the menu! We would have liked more of a choice, more lighter bites, more vegetarian options and the prices seemed a bit high on some of the dishes! My friend had the shepherds pie but it was more like stew and mash, not a pie in our eyes at all. I had the fish and chips it was nice but messy looking plate. We were offered desserts but decided not to have any. This pub has so much character it's a shame a few things let it down. I hope this is addressed soon. The mushroom soup was good, the duck liver pate, served with a clementine relish, wonderful. Both of us fancied the venison casserole, served with mash, red cabbage and broccoli. Tender tasty meat (no veganuary for us). With two tasty puddings we finished sated and delighted with both food and service. Not a cheap lunch but good value for the money. Had good experiences here, so I’m trying to be kind. Chef has changed. Booking accepted at 12, arrived 230pm, fairly busy, we took our table commented on nice atmosphere. Quick to take drink order. Deliberated menu, told beef was off as was poor .. fair enough, don’t like pork, never have chicken out, so was disappointed. A call to say they were having problems would have gone a long way. Ordered starters, both ok nothing special, ordered mains. fish for hubby, steak for me. Long, long wait, watching place empty out, glasses pile up on bar and bar staff crack open a bottle. Floors were messy, table was sticky. And they’re drinking behind bar? Eventually got starters which were ok. Another long wait. Now been there 1 hr 20 mins, I’ve had 3 glasses of wine which I didn’t expect without food. Chased meals. Fish dry, steak cremated, I had to send it back. Then told they can recook steak 30 mins wait (???) or u can have your plate back n you won’t be charged. Declined both options. Why would I want to eat on my own? Manager came over n apologised, asked what we wanted him to do. I said just take a wine off the bill n don’t charge for steak. Nice guy, did his best, didn’t charge for anything on basis we’d try them again. Explained we live local, hv had gd experiences in past so yes would do that, however, came away hungry n disappointed, bought ready meals at co op .. we will go again, but not soon, will keep an eye on trip advisor ......

I came to this delightful establishment with my friends from Bangor when we were staying in the lovely village of Lavenham . The tables were set beautifully and the food was magnificent. I had the ham egg and chips which was divine .. Our server emily made sure we had everything we needed for a splendid evening in the Six Bells in Preston st. Mary. My grandson told me about this website and said I should leave a review as I had such a lovely experience here

We enjoyed fantastic roast beef for our Sunday reason at the Six Bells, Preston St. Mary's. The beef was exceptionally tender; the chef told us it is slow roasted beginning the previous night. The accompanying Yorkshire pudding was the tastiest we have ever had, and the other veggies were also very good. The service was great, the staff all friendly, and the ambience quite inviting. All in all it was a great way to spend Sunday afternoon!

We had 3 meals at the Six Bells during our week in Lavenham. The Sunday roast was excellent & so were the 2 midweek evening meals. It is a welcoming pub with very warm & efficient staff. The range of meals is good and the quantity & quality were consistently high. 3 points to note:

Loved this pub for it’s vibe, menu, service and value. We had a lovely dinner but had been pre-warned that the portions are large (they were). Enjoyed visiting and will return when next in the area.

Despite diners having pre-ordered their two courses from a small set menu, the restaurant seemed unable to adequately cope with a party of around two dozen, which manifested itself in a number of ways:

With the Preston Bells recently coming under new ownership and management, I’d popped over a few times for drinks and to survey the menu and ambience, as it had gone off the boil a bit under previous ownership.

We had visited the Six Bells for a drink following the change of management and were so impressed by the welcome given by the manager and staff that, when we had visitors from London for Saturday lunch, we had no hesitation in booking a table - and thank goodness we did book, the pub was full! Our food was exceptional and, as a non-meat eater, I was impressed by the range of fish on the Specials menu - dover sole, plaice, sea bream and halibut were all available - often a rarity in less enlightened establishments with a tendency to limit the choices available to vegetarians and vegans. The fish was cooked to perfection as were our starters of whitebait and halloumi salad, and desserts of Eton Mess and poached pears with lemon sorbet. The helpings were generous fulfilling any appetite requirements and the prices are extremely reasonable. This is a pub with a warm, inviting, relaxed atmosphere, acknowledging the character of this stunning building, and offering a warm, welcoming experience for everyone. A little tucked away, it is well worth the trip - and please do remember to book!!

I ate here today with 6 friends and my cheeky 7 month old cockapoo. It was my 3rd or 4th visit since it changed hands. Our meal today was lovely, we all said so. Most of us had one of the specials - the liver dish - and 2 of us had burgers. The food looked good, was well prepared and very tasty. For me an essential ingredient of a meal out is the people. Serve me a flawless gourmet meal with a surly or disinterested attitude and I’ll never go back. Here we have a cheerful, engaging owner who could not have been more welcoming nor more anxious to please us. It really does make all the difference in my opinion. And they really are dog friendly. My cockapoo puppy Bobby got some treats from the owner despite having chewed a napkin and left the bits all over the floor! So the 6 Bells is definitely right up there for me.

Busy night ...noisy but well behaved, loads of tables booked including parties .And yet mine host pulled all the stops out for two diners like us, Choice of Sea Bream ( juicy) Plaice, Dogfish, Lemon Sole and something else plus the usual gastropub meals, no waiting considering the pressure. Nothing over elaborate ,straightforward Eton Mess. Cost? Sea Bream with butter sauce dressed salad and a few saute pots for £12,,,now that is something. Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc by the glass went down a treat. Would recommend eating here...- very near Lavenham but take a good map.

We love this pub and this year we caught it in curry and quiz night. We didn’t have the curry but we did join the quiz (last Wednesday’s in month), and didn’t come bottom! The food is good country pub fare, nicely cooked. The host is a treasure and so welcoming, as it’s near our B&B; we always visit at least once, and the new management is great.

A group of four of us and our Standard Poodle had a lovely walk around Preston on Thursday evening and then came to the pub for drinks and dinner. The staff were really friendly and the pub had a lot of customers eating and drinking considering the village is small. The food was good and the setting is beautiful.
