Six of us visited on Saturday night and had a hard time choosing from the new autumn menu as it all looked so good! (decided we will just have to come back to try more!). We each had three courses and everything was exceptional. This really was another level of food experience, and all served in a great, friendly, cosy pub. ❤️

We’re holidaying at Ladram Bay so googled pubs/restaurants nearby for a Sunday lunch and booked a table for 2 for Sunday lunch after looking at their website and consulting the menu. Arrived and was seated at our table and waited a good 15 minutes before we were given a menu to look at and then told they weren’t cooking any Sunday lunches, perhaps I should have phoned to check rather than booking online! We thought the menu was very limited and I found it hard to choose something I liked. We ordered our drinks and food, the one drink was a half instead of a pint but no problem as we ordered another one later. Food was very tasty and well presented but could have had some seasoning on the table and nobody came back to check everything was OK. Considering a service charge was automatically added to the bill, we felt that this was poor as the service wasn’t 100%.

Fabulous Mother’s Day lunch! I’m Coeliac and follow a gluten free diet. I had a delicious nut roast with all the trimmings including THE BEST gluten free Yorkshire pudding I have ever tasted!!! Other family members had pork and lamb, they said this was also great too. If you are Coeliac or follow a gluten free diet you are in very safe hands with Dan the Chef. A member of his family is Coeliac so he really understands the importance of cross contamination. We will definitely be back for another Sunday Roast!

As soon as I walked in I felt welcome at this beautiful pub within the equally beautiful village of East budleigh. The pub is the last of authentic English pubs , kept its great history and heritage and had a great feel. Enjoyed a lovely pint of Devon red before having the whitebait and the pub classic ham, egg and chips which had a great twist and tasted as good as it looked . The whole menu looked great !Corrina, Sue and Pete were great hosts and the Sir Walter Raleigh is certainly Devon in a pub and restaurant . Highly recommend and can't wait to return. Five stars all round

We visited this place for an evening meal on a Saturday. It has a pleasant interior and is steeped in history, having connections to Sir Walter Raleigh. After a 10-15 minute wait, the waitress took our order. The menu was quite limited. We ordered fish and chips and pork chop. We sat near the kitchen door (recommend they oil it!). The noise coming from the kitchen was ridiculous. The music was so loud and the kitchen staff were all singing,it was really annoying and quite unprofessional. The food was average. You pay extra for 'crushed peas'. The pork chop was huge and very pink and chewy. Mashed potato was swimming in green oil. We wouldn't go back.

This pub, part-time cafe and restaurant was bought by the local community in 2023 with the front-of-house staffed mostly by volunteers, some of whom are also "shareholders" in the project. Having visited for morning coffee and cake, we booked for an evening meal and were very impressed with the welcome, service, ambience and - most importantly - food. It's a limited menu which we believe changes weekly and which features fixed-price offerings for 2 or 3 course, plus a choice of 'specials'. We mixed and matched, sharing a generous Mac 'n cheese bowl with a crispy herb breadcrumb topping and succulent pieces of pancetta. One main was a tagliatelle featuring chopped hazlenuts - something new and really complementary. The other was hispi cabbage with goat cheese, beetroot plus hasselback potatoes. We shared a bread and butter pudding which had just the right level of sweetness and a crisped top. The quality and presentation of all the dishes was perfect, and the friendly service gave us an insight as to how the whole enterprise runs. It's already gained one AA rosette for culinary excellence and it it continues the offering we experienced last night, it's sure to gain more. We're thankful to all those folk who instigated the scheme and who freely offer their services to provide this great village amenity.

The Pub is lovely, staff were attentive. The gluten free roll was excellent although a few chips instead of crisps would have been better for the cost. Friends had the soup and it hardly covered the bottom of the bowl. Plus they said it had no taste. Their bread roll I thought was out of the freezer into microwave as it went rock hard. Croutons would be the answer. Price wise it's not cheap. The venue itself has charm. Considering most of the staff are volunteers the prices could be lower.

Five of us had Sunday lunch recently, two had belly pork which was a thinly carved joint of mostly FAT .We had very little meat . The others had beef ,this was so tough that a steak knife was needed to cut it . The brocoli was hardly cooked at all . The other vegetables were OK. We had no apology from the staff . Been here several times in the past. Although food nicely presented the food represents poor value for money. Last week three chose the fish and chips while I decided to try the special which sounded fabulous on the board but fell well short of expectancy on delivery. If what I received cost more than £2 to produce, a £17 price tag was disgusting. Volunteer staff without sufficient experience of serving food and drink also needs addressing. 3 starters, 3 mains and 3 desserts is hardly a menu. For a pub owned by the locals, the menus offer little to attract local customers to support the pub. Gourmet it is not except at the prices. Hearty food like shepherds pie, sausage and mash, fish pie etc at affordable prices might just get more “bums on seats” and boost income from wet sales. Cheffy may win Rosettes but doesn’t generate revenue to support the pub and your ego.

What a FABULOUS little pub. THIS is what true pubs should be like. It is community run, and my wife and I went on spec. hoping to get a meal. The pub was busy, (early evening) but we were made welcome immediately. They checked, and said YES, they could fit us in. A great choice of beers and lagers. None that I knew of (as we live in the North West. But with a bit of guidance from the staff, we got s lovely local draught beer and a great lager. We then had a super meal. Lovely choicees cooked beautifully. I wish this was my local.

Lunch there today. Friendly welcome and quaint surroundings. Preceeded lunch by a pleasant stroll around this lovely village in bright sunshine. Very restricted menu whereas 'on line' the sample menus displayed are far more comprehensive. I mentioned this fact to the lady behind the bar; she said that the situation would be rectified by adjusting their website. Food well cooked but the smallish portion sizes possibly weren't commensurate with the price. Overall, however, a pleasant experience. We shall return probably in summer when the menu should be more extensive.

We had a very disappointing meal at this very lack lustre pub. The menu was very large and consequently it was obvious that most of it came from the freezer. I know staff levels have been an issue but surely it would be more prudent...

We were staying in East Budleigh and twice went for a meal in The Sir Walter Raleigh. A really nice little pub, lpst a bit of atmosphere because of Covid restrictions but still a nice atmosphere. The food was absolutey delicisous, my advice is make sure you leave room for the wonderful home made puddings. Staff were friendly although barman could do with a cheer up. Would definitely recommend

We were looking forward to ‘Pie Night’ for a long time, since our friends had been previously. We were not disappointed! The pies were absolutely delicious - especially my fish pie. Out of this world good and hands down the BEST most scrumptious fish pie I’ve ever had. Extremely generous portions, hot veggies, yummy desserts and wonderful service. Really enjoyed ourselves and can’t wait to go back for more.

Been to Hughsies again for a few meals while on holiday in Seaton. Lovely breakfasts freshly cooked and good service. Lunches were a more difficult choice as there was a good selection and I know from experience that whatever we chose would be delicious. I have seen a number of negative comments on here but my husband and I have never had a problem. Nice clean cafe and good fresh cooked meals. We will be back again next year.

A very pleasant evening with friends. The food was excellent although I was surprised that certain items were seen as 'sides' - as an example we had a delicious Cotê De Boeuf at a cost of £120 (shared between 2) and had to pay extra for 'seasonal vegetables' (kale and french beans) which wasn't even offered as a menu item. My disappointment was in the service on the evening, it wasn't very genuinely welcoming, more functional. The bill was approximately £200 for 4 people and didn't include alcohol. I won't be going back.
