This Pub is under new ownership, and it’s certainly improved 10 fold! The service is brilliant, loads of lovely, friendly staff who couldn’t help you more! The best transformation has been the food…! The Sunday Roast is delicious, definitely the best in the local area (Forest Hill/honor oak/East Dulwich!) the only downside is there are so many TVs that if you’re not a sports fan you cannot escape it… my dad is hard of hearing so it was difficult for him to hear over all of the TV noise. But apart from that, honestly this place is great and so happy for the new owners 🙌

This place is so much better than previously. The new owners (Fran, I think?) are super friendly, the staff are attentive and great and the beer and food is decent. It’s great to have a pub which treats you like they want you there! Still don’t love the tv screens everywhere, but I can forgive that - it’s definitely the best pub in Forest Hill. They deserve to do really well.

It is always very civilized in here. If you're lucky you might get to meet the large cat.

I’ve lived in Forest Hill for 10 years and seen various versions of the pub, from the Hob, reopening as the Signal under Hippo Inns which was great but lost it’s way over time. This is the best I’ve seen it in years. Friendly staff, welcoming atmosphere and an inviting menu

Went for Roast Lamb on Sunday. One of the best roasts we have had. The manager, is so welcoming, friendly and genuinely cares about the pub, customers, staff and food. We will be back!

A wonderful, cozy pub with INCREDIBLE Sunday roasts and the friendliest staff. We had two beef roasts and one chicken and the food was exceptional - incredibly flavourful and generous portions. Fran and Teddy who run the place are super welcoming and I will absolutely be back again!

Used to frequent the Singal a few times in the past and always enjoyed the food and ambiance. That felt missing recently, visited here in January and it was in a sorry state, poor food and staff who didn't seem to care. Thankfully this pub has recentley come under new Management and is back to its very best. Staff are all super friendly, the food is great (one of the best burgers Ive had in a while) and the interior looks great after a recent refit. Will definitley be going back to try a Sunday roast! Plus it has a cat , whats not to like.

I was there last night with friends. When it was my round, I went to the bar to buy a bottle of the Rosé we had been drinking - the Domaine Pinchinat. I was charged £45 for it. Something didn’t feel right about the bar man’s attitude. I paid for the wine, checked the menu online this morning to find that the wine is actually £36 on the menu. I am livid. I will not be returning.

Now under new management! Splendid atmosphere with friendly staff and landlords. Nicely designed interior, original wood fixtures with a modern covered beer garden. Highly recommend this place for drinks and/or food at any time of day. Substantial plates made with well-picked ingredients. Pub quiz on a Sunday is a good community favourite!

🚇 Forest Hill 🍺 £5.65 Amstel A Fantastic Locals Station Pub. The Signal is located in the heart of Forest Hill, South East London. The nearest station is Forest Hill Overground which is just across the road. This pub was built mid 19th century and started life as The Railway Signal Hotel. For a period of time the pub was known as The Hob. The Hob had a great reputation as a venue for stand-up comedy in South London. This is a large one bar pub that is split level, with the servery located on the upper level. The decor is traditional with contemporary touches here and there. Above the servery are some huge orange pendants, by the stairs is a model steam engine, my favourite feature is the live train times display above the back bar. The seating is predominantly low level tables and chairs with poser tables and stools near the servery. Upstairs is a function room, there is also a beer garden for the warmer months. The beer selection was good and included a couple of cask and craft plus No and Low options too. I decided on an Amstel, my pint was excellent, price point was pleasingly below six quid. The food menu consisted of traditional pub fayre, plus Roasts on a Sunday, Fish & Chips costs £14.99. The atmosphere here was superb, there were buzzy high street pub vibes with a local neighbourhood feel. The punters were from all walks of life, there were young couples enjoying an afternoon catch up and solo imbibers watching the scores coming in. The service was outstanding, the chap who served us was welcoming, quick witted and spent time talking to us about the pub whilst working his arse off making sure his customers were happy. The Signal has plenty on to keep you entertained. Throughout the week is Live Music, a Pub Quiz, Drinks Deals plus Live Premier League action. Check their socials for info. The @signalpub is a fantastic station pub that is popular with a broad mix of Forest Hill’s locals. The ambiance and welcome from the team make this is such an easy pub to settle into. It was fine. Decent range of beers. They had the football on but no sound. It wasn't busy. They'd run out of the dessert of the day (apple and ginger crumble).

I brought my daughter for lunch during half term week. We ordered food and a drink via the app and I paid in advance by paypal. The drinks arrived after 15 minutes but no sign of food after 50 minutes of waiting. There was one staff member serving at the bar and bringing out the food. I asked where our food order was and was informed it would be 10 more minutes. After another 20 minutes waiting, I went back to the bar and was told that the electrics had gone off in the kitchen and that was causing delays. I asked why they hadn't told me that before I paid for the order and they apologised and offered a full refund as we couldn't wait any longer for the food to arrive. The manager said she would do the refund immediately and pay for the drinks as we had been waiting so long. It was £32 bill and over 3 weeks ago and I still haven't been refunded despite raising a query through Paypal. We didn't even get any food so I can't review it but it's pretty shocking that they haven't refunded me yet.

Surprise birthday party for my partner, staff were lovely and we had the large upstairs room all to ourselves- recommend! Food was delicious- service a little slow but it was a busy Saturday night, all in all an asset to Forest Hill and not over priced either

Wouldn't bother trying to eat there. Had several dissapointing experiences trying to eat here now. Though its fine for a drink. Took 50 minutes for our roasts to come today. Staff didn't warn us about the wait before we ordered and were rude when we asked where our food was. The roast itself was pretty tasty when it eventually arrived. Just not worth the wait and rudeness.

BEWARE!! A VERY DISAPPOINTING EXPERIENCE Bar service very slow and overall service inadequate. We waited for over an hour for food and when it arrived it wasn't all served at the same time and some of it was cold! Even the condiments supplied were for burgers and not Sunday Roasts which we ordered. Food was very average for the prices charged. DON'T WASTE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY IN THIS PLACE!!

Gone way down hill. Assume has changed hands. No has a Weatherspoon’s type menu. Place is grossly understaffed. One poor bar woman looking after entire bar and table service all by herself during half term week. Food took 45 mins to arrive and was terrible. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

Arrived at 1pm but no Sunday roast as advertised, no explanation given. The place seems more like a burger bar with alcohol. Only a few comfortable seats are available. Not for me this place.

Stopped by with a mate on the way home from work for a cheeky pint and ended up having a few pints in part due to the excellent Guinness. Creamy and smooth. Went down a treat.

I booked a table for two to watch the rugby, when we asked for our table was told by woman at the bar that our table was by the piano, not even bothering to point out the table. Went to the table which is right by the door with no tv’s in view to watch the rugby. The table said William 8pm, which is not my name and we had booked for 7pm. We had to search the pub and eventually found our table. Then went to order food only to be told they didn’t have any fish. Then ordered gammon and was then told no tomatoes after paying they then said we have no eggs. Eventually I ordered scampi and was quite disappointed when it eventually arrived but my partners burger was very good. Also no light in the toilet which was rather annoying and where we sat we could not really hear the commentary for the rugby which was annoying as they are advertising as a six nations pub. I have been coming to signal over the years but was very disappointed it kind of feels like no one cares anymore.

Went in for a few drinks with friends. Was served by Kelly who was always smiling and made us feel very welcome. 10 out of 10. Will definitely be back soon

Hi ! Went there a couple of days ago and this is the kind of pub you want to go back to. From the atmosphere to the food ( especially the food !! ) I am beyond happy to have discovered it. One of the girl, Imane if I remember correctly ? ) were so nice and joyful so it’s a bonus on top of it. Thanks a lot, will definitely come back soon xx

Had a Absolutely amazing catch up with my girls. Kels and iman was so polite and friendly. Nothing was to much bother for them. With service like this and attitude towards the customers we will definitely be back. See you soon

Visited The Signal passing back through into London as looked like a pleasant pub to stop off at and had heard good things in the past. On arrival, the atmosphere was pleasant and bustling for relatively early lunchtime, however the service soon dropped off. We waited at the bar for around 10mins to order with no server around, or any staff for that matter. He then arrived with a coffee having looked like he'd gone to a local high street cafe. Drinks served were all well kept after the delay. Ordering food was extremely slow. From paying to food on table was about 45mins for a sandwich and a main meal. It looked as though the chef was making one meal at a time as it was very staggered and delayed around the pub. Potential staffing/stock issues? I think this may have just been a bad day for the pub as it appears to have a good local attendance with various events. It's well priced and the food was perfectly fine. Happy to revisit with hope for better service next time.

Booked Sunday lunch for 1.00pm, one roast was already off the menu. After ordering told food would be about an hour, then about 20 minutes after placing the order the beef was also off the menu so only turkey available. Food finally arrived 90 minutes after booking and was cold. Felt sorry for the staff who were doing their best but not obviously backed up by their kitchen. Should have been unfront that that they could not deal with our order in good time. The pub is also quite cold so if going in winter wrap up. This was out second visit, the first one was for dinner before Christmas mid-week which was really good.

Lovely experience, lovely staff, lovely food, good atmosphere

This is a very lovely pub, there's live music and lots of entertainment. Food could be better though: I've had a roast once and the carrots were not properly cooked, my friend ordered cheese burgers for her children (with a few requests) and they brought everything wrong. It's a nice, family atmosphere but can improve in service and food quality.

This pub used to be a wonderful place to spend an afternoon. But now the comfortable chairs near the fire are gone, along with all other comfortable seating. Loud TVs playing sport add to the disappointment. It no longer feels like a place to spend time with friends. Just order, eat and leave. Can’t fault the bar service though. They were very quick.

An on trend pub in an up and coming part of South London. Got a good vibe. Took a meal with a group of friends and unfortunately the service was very slow and rather haphazard. Shame.

Popped in for a couple on the way to John Parris cues . This pub is right outside the train station, you can't miss it. Great selection of beers and I had the Christmas Burger which was lovely... Very nice burger. Staff are great and price point isn't bad. Highly recommend popping in. There's a lot of TV's all with something different on so it's not just showing football which was a relief. The pub itself is quite long.. it's got loads of space and a nice little digital screen with train times on so you can time a quick half nicely before your train home 😀

Had our Annual Christmas Party held here booked a few months in advance, the space upstairs was perfect for 31 of us, the pub itself has its own charm. They were most definitely SHORT STAFFED. Food was being served whilst the previous course was still not cleared from the table, glasses, cutleries, napkins not on the table. We suppose to have our own bar person however it was only during our starter someone served us otherwise we had to keep going downstairs to get our drinks. Food: So we opted for 3 the course meal £27. Beef was served first which for those who had it said it tasted really good, then everyone who ordered turkey had to wait 20mins, kids still waiting for theirs. The turkey was non existent, 2 small slices, they bulked up in veg even had mash potatoes and roast potatoes which is a first for me, food was cold apart from the pigs in blanket. Desserts were questionable, however the Xmas pudding was not bad. Thankfully we had access to music so that cheered us up. Such a shame as the 1 year old was the last to get served.

Great pub near Forest Hill, with good beers on tap, and the food is decent. Definitely, recommend stopping in here if you're in the area!

What a lovely place! Visited here with my friend for a drink and ended up staying for food. Great atmosphere for a cosy catch up and picky bits for dinner. Girl behind the bar was really friendly.

Came here for food with visiting family and was extremely embarrassed. The food was absolutely awful. We ordered chicken burgers and got a microwaved frozen chicken breast fillet (of the lowest quality) on a cheap bun, with a side of almost cooked frozen chips. The chicken was pale and had no juice whatsoever in it. We returned these almost as soon as they arrived and asked for a refund. Another member of the family ordered a pie, which turned out to be a cheap, frozen thing that looked like it was warned up in a microwave. Absolutely disgusting food and a place I will never visit again and will recommend anyone else to avoid

Was in the are visiting friends and they suggested we go here for some food. Food was great and it was made even better by the helpful staffs whisky recommendations. Will defiantly come here again next time I'm visiting.

Maybe we just picked a wrong night, the Roast was very poor and basically a reheat. We have eaten there before last Christmas and the food was good so maybe its changed hands but this has definitely gone down hill. Disappointing !

Here on a Sunday. The service from Jonah was great! He was working on his own (the pub seemed to be very short staffed despite being busy). He managed a very busy drinks bar and food orders for several hours, on his own. Credit to him. Since the pub has been taken over by another much bigger company the place isn't what it used to be.

Sunday roast was perfect! Waiting and bar staff were absolutely lovely too. Can’t wait to go back ✅

chill at a 2:45pm Sat and got quite busy at 3:45 when we left. need to wait 30 mins for all of our 5 small plates, could've serve some in advance as we got 2 people and order 5 plates. it's also surprising that only one member of staff is running the area, except whoever in the hidden kitchen ofc. Overall still a very decent experience, comfortable seating and live sport, boardgames and books avaliable in the pub.

Looking for a venue for a small group to meet for drinks and food, and tried here as our usual Forest Hill venue (Wetherspoon) has closed. Menu looked good and varied and suitable for our group and their food likes. Venue was nice and welcoming and staff pleasant with reasonably quick drinks and food ordering service. However, food was disappointing. They did, eventually, say that they were short staffed in kitchen, but incredibly long wait for meals. Would have been nice to be kept informed, and perhaps offered some crisps/nuts to keep us going. My gammon was nothing like the 10oz stated on the menu - was relatively tiny; also fried egg was delivered when I was half way through eating my meal - what was that all about? Other friends had incredibly long waits for their food, and they thought it OK only. Certainly didn't seem value for money. Overall, the evening came out far more expensive than our group could manage, so will move on elsewhere. I might give the place another go at another time, but would check out kitchen status first.

Food was great, I recommend the Mac and cheese bites. Warm service and some cute Halloween decorations made the night fun!

Amazing pub, great team and atmosphere!

It was my first time here although some of our party had been here before. We came specifically for the live music which was fantastic. Drinks are reasonably priced and the staff that served us were friendly.

Love this pub! Great location and good food and drinks. Really spacious inside and a decent beer garden out back. Bonus that you'll never miss your train as they have a departures board above the bar.

I had the most wonderful evening in The Signal! I went to watch Owen Bolton perform on a Friday evening. It was cold and raining outside but the atmosphere inside was perfect - candles on every table and the fireplace going. It was warm and welcoming and I had a brilliant evening! I was only going to stay until the performance was over but ended up staying until close! Can't wait to visit again

I came here for a pint while I was waiting for my train (the pub is literally opposite the train station and they have the live updating train times displayed behind the bar!). I was welcomed in out of the rain by a lovely bar tender. She recommended the Session IPA on cask and offered me a 'cask collector' card which I think is such a good idea - you get the 7th pint free! It was really warm and comfy in there and I enjoyed looking at the 'dog wall of fame'. It's a shame I couldn't spend longer there and I'll definitely by back for food with some friends!

Quite disappointed with the Signal recently. Came on a Saturday night, only one member of staff behind the bar so very long queues. No chef in so no food either. We ordered two pints of Diet Coke, for £4 each. They tasted like soda water and the bartender told us the syrup had run out. He then gave us a single 330ml bottle as a substitute - not great for £8 (see photo)! I’m guessing the management must be under some financial pressure as standards have really fallen. Think they should spend more time getting the basics right (i.e. having enough quality staff to cover a shift, and good stock management) rather than spending money on new TVs and an expensive sky subscription…

We had dinner there last night. Not a great start when we were told a few of the dishes on the menu were sold out or not available. The food took quite a while to come out and came out one at a time with a big gap in between each order. My friend had the burger which was pretty bad. I ordered chicken skewers which were tiny, more like finger food and they were overcooked. To be fair, at least the wings were not bad. They seemed understaffed also. The barman was taking drinks order at the bar and also having to bring out the food to tables. However the barman was friendly and polite. Overall the food seems to the standard of weatherpoons now. A massive shame as the Signal used to serve good food.

Had some friends here from Nashville and wanted to take them for some good pub food. This place has changed since last time we went! Should have looked at the warning signs when ordering and a lot of the food options were not available. Looked like only one guy serving drinks and food so service was very slow. Took ages for the food to come out and when it did it they arrived at different times so it was hard to eat together. The food looked like Wetherspoons food and was tasteless. So disappointing. This used to be one of my favourite pubs, but won’t be back now.

Went here recently with some friends loved it , food was great atmosphere fantastic and the staff were brilliant . Will certainly be coming back 10/10

Ordered on all, slow service, hardly anyone in there but had to get up and ask where my drink was after 15 mins of ordering. Same thing happened with dessert and tea, waited over 20 mins all to be told they had forgotten about the dessert and even asked what drink I had ordered. Bad customer service! However, the quiz night was fun and I loved the guy asking the questions, he was really entertaining and made us laugh ☺️ Thank you

I was really disappointed returning to this pub under new management. I ordered the fish pie with chips and peas. The fish pie costs £14.99 and was really watery. It had 3 cubes of fish and 2 prawns. I'm going for a burger somewhere else because this was not at all filling!! I just had a terrible reply from the management saying they are always looking to improve but they also said that to the last complaint 4 months ago and I can tell you they haven't changed anything. In fact I went to Wetherspoons later (just across the road) and shockingly got bet service at a better price there. Totally insane!!

So so disappointed with today’s experience! As Forest Hill locals, we’ve been to The Signal pub plenty of times but won’t be back after today. Assuming the management has changed…the food was awful, inedible roasts they are charging £18 for. The beef was essentially two slabs of fat, everything else out of a packet and overcooked. Service was non-existent, we had to ask at the bar how we ordered food. Cutlery was dirty so we sent back the first set. All in all, we were so disappointed (and still hungry!) that we had all the food deducted from our bill. Wondered why it was empty when we arrived and now we know. Won’t be returning!

Absolutely banging Sunday roast and great friendly service from Jess & Jonah at the bar

I assume they have changed ownership recently, but compared to before it is really bad. The two staff were really dismissive and rude - I asked for the table to be cleaned as it was sticky and they gave me the cleaning stuff without any offer to help and gave me a relatively dirty look for asking; they bought one set of cutlery over despite there clearly being four of us and gave a very reluctant agreement to bring more; and despite all ordering food together the first meal arrived 20 minutes after ordering and the final 50 minutes after, with no apology from the original two members of staff. At around 7/7:30pm today, they clearly finished their shift and left, which was the best thing that could happen. The new members of staff were much, much better - kind and offered a free drink for the delays in the food (only 3 to 4 tables were occupied this whole time). The latter shift members of staff made it much better but overall, it was really poor. I also thought the constant playing of sports rather than ambient music or a band like other local pubs was horrid for the atmosphere. The Signal used to be packed on a Friday night but was empty, and I think this is why: not great service, bad atmosphere, and poor etiquette with food services. Thanks to the member of staff who finally apologised for the delays and gave us a free drink. However, I don’t know that we’d come back while it is as it is currently.

Came with my family for a Sunday dinner which was incredible! The cauliflower cheese was amazing, will definitely be coming back!!!

I understand it was a bank holiday weekend, and you looked as though you were understaffed but quiet. However, having waited an hour for our food (after chasing it up) without any notice on the bar or explanation from your member of staff, 3 meals turned up and having to wait for the fourth meal when everyone had already finished is completely unacceptable. The mushrooms on the gammon plate were laughable!!! I'm glad for the refund on the food, but we sadly won't be coming here again even with the half-hearted apology. If you can't deliver the goods, don't bother!!!

I feel bad that I have to write this as previously when visiting this pub for lunch or drinks it's been great especially for a young family. We have a 1.5 year old. My mum and her partner were visiting and with the baby asleep...

Went on a Friday lunchtime a few weeks ago, apart from our table of four adults and four kids there was one other family. We ordered food and it took well over an hour for food to arrive at various intervals. They did apologize that they were catering for a wedding but they probably shouldn't have said they would take our order rather than keep a bunch of kids waiting for their grub

The worst Sunday roast I have ever had! Dry meat, dry roast potatoes, rock hard vegs, watery gravy, the Yorkshire puddings flat as pancakes, all tasteless and lukewarm, definitely not cooked on that day. Everything must have been cooked at least the day before and badly reheated with a microwave, everything really horrible.

Chefs always busy here! Great atmospheric pub with spaces to hire and chill out in. Lots of charm to it and it draws in a good crowd. The staff are great, always on hand to help or for good conversation! 👍

Please do got go there for food it is absolutely atrocious we had to wait over an hour then only parts of the meal came out and two of the meals were burnt. 0/10
