The Shy Horse in Kingston upon Thames

The Shy Horse has an interesting menu... orchestrated by someone who clearly cares. Some good old fashioned choices on there too... pie, fish and chips, lasagne, etc. My fellow diner's pie looked brilliant and apparently that's exactly what it was. Another of my esteemed colleagues (he's not esteemed at all) had the paté starter which didn't look great but tasted fine... you know when your paté has been in the fridge for a while or the air gets to it and it turns grey? (SEE PHOTO) They wouldn't serve it at The Ritz... but I guess this isn't The Ritz. I ordered the lamb shank and a whisky because I'm a man and that's a manly order and I have to assert my uber masculine dominance in anyway I can on these business dinners. Anywho... the shank was £24.75 plus a nice whisky = £30 all in which isn't bad for London really. It was cooked beautifully and when it's done right I'll pay whatever. It wasn't the biggest shank I'd ever had but it just about did the job. The whisky came in a brandy glass... not sure why but it was clean, that's the main thing I guess. The staff were quietly efficient and attentive throughout. There is car parking too. I would certainly recommend it to others and if I find myself in the area again, I'll be back.

Very nice and cosy pub, and extremely dog friendly too. The food is very nice. What stands out is the pizzas and a non alcoholic drink called Country Garden. There is a large dedicated table for dog treats, water, blankets etc. Definitely a strong candidate to become our local pub

Me, my mum and sister stopped off here on the way home from New Wimbledon Theatre. What a great find! The food was absolutely amazing and the staff were very friendly. Would definitely go here again if we're ever back in the area 😊 Highly recommend!

Great cosy atmosphere, warm welcome … great start . Pub is bright and spacious , service is quick and efficient. FOOD. 2 adults and 2 kids . For kids from their menu Beef burger with fries and bake beans (£1 extra for cheese, little bit pricey) : Burger was good, baked beans are baked beans 😊, portion of fries little bit small. 6.5/10 from the young gourmet . Chicken nuggets, fries (good portion 😉, maybe taken from the burger 😅) , veggie stick (what an idea with nuggets) . No much to say and a nice 8.5/10, the nuggets getting the leads!!! For adults : Pie of the day : Very good and tasteful, mash was lukewarm but with gravy on the top, that it, problem done . 8/10 from the grumpy wife ( can you imagine 8 from someone grumpy …) Ribeye: Ask for rare, was medium rare but the meat was juicy and very good . Mentioned it and they apologised and resolved it with a nice gift ☺️. Can happened Not always easy to control the cooking . Triple cooked fries were ok . 6.5/10 (8.5 if cooked rare ) So please do not hesitate with this place great value for money .

We visited the Shy Horse in Chessington this afternoon and were not disappointed, we were served by Chris and chef Miguel but can honestly say that all the staff that served us were lovely. We had the lamb shank and it was delicious, will definitely be back ! Thanks again. Ivana

We went to the Shy Horse for our pre-Christmas lunch. Lovely atmosphere and friendly staff. The menu is varied, with something for everyone; the food was cooked to perfection and beautifully presented. Absolutely delicious! It was very busy due to the time of year, however our food and drinks were served promptly without any delay. Worth mentioning that I have spinal/mobility problems and the staff really went the extra mile to make sure I had a comfy chair. Makes you feel valued as a customer.

Have previously visited and it was "okay". Visited again last night and was great! Think there may have been a change of ownership/management since my last visit. Duty/Bar Manager was very friendly. Menu choices were great. Price reasonable. Food was beautifully presented and tasted fantastic. Service speed was perfect. (Admittedly it was a Wednesday eve and it was quiet.) Environment was lovely too with log fire on the go. Will definitely return for either a Sunday roast after a winter walk or summer lunch in their garden. They are dog friendly - but dogs need to be well behaved and on a lead.

We were visiting the area and decided to try out The Shy Horse for dinner. To begin with, the interior is charming. Everything is clean and warm, with nicely spaced tables and seating to accommodate all sizes of groups. The staff are very friendly and attentive and efficient. The food is fantastic. We ordered the Steak and Venison pies and both the pastry and fillings were absolutely delicious. The chips were done perfectly and the gravy went with everything (I was tempted to drink it). Thanks for a wonderful meal!

Enjoyed our meal in the week. Always find it tricky finding somewhere good between Xmas and New Year but Shy Horse was amazing. Charlie was excellent taking our order. He was polite, patient and attentive whilst I took forever to make up my mind. Charlie was very helpful recommending what we might like. He was right - the beef was outstanding. Will definitely be back.

Christmas dinner was FANTASTIC !!! really enjoyed the meal! Especially as we found ourselves unexpectedly let down on Christmas morning, luckily managed to get squeezed in here at 4pm. We had been for lunch recently so expected it would be as good! Cosy pub, staff very nice. We will definitely be going again.

Came across this lovely place. The atmosphere is welcoming. I was served by the lovely Sofia who was very friendly and helpful. Ordered the Fish and Chips followed by Chocolate Trios which was a real treat. Highly recommend!

A beautiful charming country pub! First time we came here and it won't be the last! Everyone was very warm and friendly. We dined in a relaxed atmosphere. We enjoyed great service from Sofia who was personable and attentive. Had the Mac & cheese and crispy buttermilk chicken burger. Everything was delicious! Would thoroughly recommend!!

We came here for Christmas Day and it was a lovely atmosphere. The staff were so friendly and very accommodating with our table requests. We had a lovely server (I don’t know his name, sorry!) and he was excellent with my daughters. My daughters had a great time too! Thank you so much for a perfect Christmas Day ☺️

What was great was the friendly & accommodating staff, our seating location + arrangement & the excellent food! No-one in our group could think of anything you could have improved on.

The calamari starter was chewy not crunchy and lukewarm. The burger main course was only lukewarm and I suspect had been hanging around a while. We had to ask them where the onions ring were. Needless to say they were only lukewarm. When the waiter asked if we’d finished our starters he said “the main course is waiting for you”. The mini Bakewell sponge and custard was delicious. The accompanying latte was dire. The cup was only three quarters full with a lukewarm liquid and no froth. My two friends had the same starters and main courses but different drinks. One friend had asked for a cappuccino and this also arrived three quarters full and lukewarm. My other friend had a hot chocolate. This arrived as a cup of grey liquid but because it was hot she decided to keep it. The latte and cappuccino were returned as we’d had enough by then. A lady brought over fresh drinks and they were perfect and delicious. She said the one who did our first coffees was training. He needs to have all his drinks supervised until he gets it consistently right. This was our Xmas reunion and the poor standard did partly affect our enjoyment. The burger and chips could have been great if only they had been hot. In hindsight, we should have asked for freshly made calamari and for the burgers to be put in a microwave at the very least but it wasn’t a short walk to the bar. We won’t be going back to the Shy Horse again.

Came in for lunch today and our waitress was very attentive and helpful with our order, checking up on us and advising us with the menu. We had the Hunters chicken which was the best I have ever had. Quick service too. Lovely Christmas lunch out.

Dropped in after a lengthy dog walk to have a pint and get some work done. The staff are super friendly and helpful and were great with my dog. Had a sandwich which was good, but could have been better. Would definitely visit again for the service alone. Nice and cosy atmosphere.

Cheap Frozen Food Presented Well - PLUS Owner Lies In His Reply I ordered their £17.95 'signature burger', the patty was a cheap frozen patty that had been defrosted and heavily grilled (the type which is oddly white inside and you would get if you ordered a burger in a soft play centre). Took one bite and sent it back for the fish and chunky chips. The fish was ok, but the chips were obviously frozen and just chucked in the oven. Credit to the waiter who didn't argue with replacing the food, but good customer service doesn't make up for the rubbish food and high prices. UPDATE: Following the owners feedback, the dish was NOT removed from the bill, because they get you to pay upfront. The burger was replaced for a cheaper fish and chip meal with no reimbursement. The owner's response is completely void of any responsibility for the Iceland style burgers and chunky oven chips that was served. The waiter didn't hesitate to replace my food because he knew 100% about the trash he had to serve. Save yourself £££ and pick something fresh up at the M&S petrol station around the corner.

The food is always good quality, cooked well and beautifully presented. A good and varied menu for both food and drinks. Of course a huge mention to the staff who are always very attentive. There were only two staff today at a very busy time, which we were surprised at; however, the guys managed admirably, no delays or waiting around for food to arrive. Real big shout out to Chris and Dylan.

Excellent place stopped off on the way back from Chessington, done no research on the place, lovely atmosphere the staff where excellent and the food really really nice, We were 4 adults and 2 under 5's and everyone finished their food

Would score 0 if I could Service was shocking, clearly understaffed. Orders were forgotten about for drinks then the food we ordered we were informed 45 mins later was no longer available with very little empathy! And the pasta that did come out from kids menu was cold in the middle

Food was ok, service was awful. Ordered food and were told 3 times they didn’t have it. Ordered drinks and they forgot to serve them. Clearly run by misfits. Not worth the price at all. Don’t waste your money or time. Half the party got their food 20 mins before everyone else did.

We had our annual Christmas meal, which we have been having at the Shy Horse for the last few years now. We always love coming back as the team is so great particularly James and Kelly who help to make the lead up and the actual evening so smooth and the food is always lovely

Mixed experience We visited 10/12 for a late lunch have visited quite a few times and had no problems lovely staff Food this time was good but was spoiled by a male staff member His attitude was a bit arrogant and condescending regarding an mild allergy treated us as we didn’t know what we could eat or order Then whilst we were eating he must had gone outside for a break and had obviously been smoking when he returned he sat down down at an empty table next to us where we treated to the waft of stale cigarette smoke He sat there on his phone having a conversation whilst we where eating I would like to think this was unacceptable behaviour by a member of staff in a restaurant whilst people were eating and will be dealt with Spoilt our lunch and left us a bit dissatisfied

Not bad food, but we won’t be in a hurry to return because it was such slow service. We were there for 4 hours just to get a 2 course meal! And that was at 5pm - we thought going early for dinner would mean we’d get quick, attentive service but they seemed very short-staffed…

Jake was a fantastic host and made us feel very welcome. Food was great and live music on a Monday was a plus too. Highly recommend!

Jake was our staff member/server at the Shy Horse (Vintage Inns). He was friendly & efficient; dealing with numerous diners (with different needs, e.g. warmer area, dietary issues & Blue Light Card / other sign-up discounts). Nothing was too much trouble for him & he was the ultimate gent - when a discount code didn’t work or a neighbouring table’s drink overturned. With his warm & professional demeanour, plus being unflappable & very diplomatic, he is an absolute boon to both the venue & the company. He made a catch-up with a good friend a most enjoyable Sunday afternoon (& the Roast dinner wasn’t too bad, to boot)!! Thanks

Wonderful pub great staff and atmosphere! I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a great Sunday roast! Best pork belly I have ever had, the ribeye, pies and signature burger are also absolutely perfect! Great beer and attentive wait staff! When the atmosphere is better than the food and service, it's the clients that make the place and not the establishment. Food was poor, overcooked veg and bland Chicken and Pancetta pie. Overcooked roast for my partner and kids didn't enjoy the pizza much either. I had to repeat orders several times, drink orders had long delays. It wasn't even that busy. Very disappointed.

Had a marvellous time at this restaurant. The server, Jake, was polite and speedy and took my food allergy as serious as it is for me. They went above and beyond to make me feel safe eating there. The food was amazing too, both hearty and flavourful. Definitely add this location to your list of places to try!

Have been here a few times now, and the food has always been absolutely delicious. We visited on Sunday 17th November for a Sunday roast, having the roast sirloin of beef and myself the root vegetable Wellington, then an allotment crumble and a sticky toffee pudding which was fantastic. The service was spot on thank you Jake and friendly and we are already planning our next visit. Alway a friendly place to visit and certainly a must for the food.

Really quiet as it's a big pub so If only a few couples in there it seems really quiet. Food pretty good, staff lovely. Worth a visit especially if you come from Dorking /Reigate as its just before the ULEZ charge 😅😅

All the experience was fabulous. From the decoration and atmosphere to the service by the great Jack and finally to the amazing food. From starter to dessert everything was perfect. Cocktails were brilliant and the wine excellent with a reasonable price. Definitely my Sunday place to be.

Visited as a family of 4 after a busy day at Thorpe park as we were staying nearby to visit Chessington the next day. Ordered from the weekend set menu which was great value. 3 courses for £30. I got scallops and king prawns to start and then sea bass with mussels for main and my partner got the fritto misto and pork belly. My son got a pizza from the main menu, which he said was delicious and my daughter had a kids meal, which was also good. Came again the following night after chessington as we enjoyed it so much. Our server Jake was fab, we will definitely return if we are ever in the area. Would thoroughly recommend.

A large group of us visited the Pub on Wednesday night for food and drinks. The food was brilliant, but most impressively the staff were amazing. Jake was extremely welcoming, attentive, knowledgable, and managed to serve a large group extremely efficiently. We were really impressed with his attitude and great chat. Great work, Jake!

Popped in last minute for a meal. Chris was on the bar and taking orders for food. I would recommend the crispy chicken starter and the haddock fish cake. Quite delicious. We will return soon.

What a great Sunday lunch. We arrived at 12 as we had not booked. All the staff were helpful and got us seated right next to the fire. Jake was amazing and knew we needed the kids food out with the starters. He was also ultra happy. We will definitely be coming back. The food was great.
