The Shuhag in Rochford

I phoned an order through and collected my order, changed and added things in as requested this was no trouble at all. Very welcoming on arrival to collect all staff I came across said hello and asked how I was. Amazing food as always, I'm a regular here. Always add and change things when asked, nothing is never to much trouble for them. They go above and beyond when eating in. Always feel welcome, music playing, amazing service and always talk and check everything is OK. All staff are polite and are around if anything is needed. Best Indian takeaway and restaurant by far I would never go anywhere else. Can't wait to go tomorrow night with the girls for my birthday. - phoned last week to pre book a table for 10 and this was no problem or trouble at all.

Our first visit here so some unfamiliar dishes on the chefs specials. When asking the waiter what they were he comically answered. “ I don’t have my glasses ! Then I don’t know the chef changes then” The red sauce with popadoms was “ strawberry” strange. The food we ate was good but I would have liked to try one of the special dishes. No music and it was quite a dull atmosphere. The others eating all seemed to have been before so maybe it was just the initial disappointment that marred the experience.

Food was good but atmosphere was really flat, and service out dated. Waiters did not interact at all, in fact I’d say they were unfriendly - the place was empty by 10pm and we were then made to feel like we also needed to leave with numerous waiter’s hanging round our table and asking if we wanted the bill. Won’t ever go back - they need to up their game considerably ! Very disappointing.

Well cooked food, brisk (and occasionally brusque) service, and on a Friday evening at 6.45pm completely full. I’ve never really able to fault this place, but it feels a bit like it operates below its true potential. Shake things up a bit folks!

It has been years since we were regulars here. The decor has changed. But food and service as great as before. My wife and I booked for dinner with a friend living in Switzerland. We were greeted and seated at the round table. We ordered poppadoms with a lovely selection of chutneys. This allowed us to surf the large menu. Finally settling on a Lamb Tikka Masala for me; a Lamb Tikka Danssk for my wife and our friend went for the Butter chicken. We added sides and a naan. The pistachio kulfi finished a great evening plus the Cobra of course. We will return again.

Twenty years ago this was our ‘go to’ Indian restaurant until we moved away. The décor has changed (for the better), some of the staff are still here (we recognised Abdul straight away), but if anything the depth of the menu and quality of the food is better than ever. The papadoms on arrival were warm, crispy and really tasty. We shared a main, a couple of sides, a rice and a naan bread. If asked for my personal favourite I’d just say all of them. Indian food absolutely superbly cooked, presented and delivered to our table. Can’t rate the Shuhag highly enough and we’ll definitely be making another visit before we have to go home again.

We Went here a couple of weeks ago for a meal , we couldn’t fault the service ,and the food was nice and it’s great value for money , it’s certainly not memorable but worth a visit ,

The food tasted excellent but i have never seen a three legged chicken before. We had a delivered take away and was very surprised to find that that the whole chicken we ordered had a half breast and three legs

Always good food at the Shuhag. Have never been disappointed. Whether we’ve eaten in the restaurant or ordered a takeaway the standard has remained excellent. Will most definitely continue to visit!

Wow we just got this on takeaway and I have literally come away from this amazing food to write this because they deserve it!!! Honestly this is on par with the best curry I have ever eaten in my life. Flavour is on point, quality of the food is second to none, no oil to be seen and we made a special requests and they made it to perfection. I cannot rate them enough. This is our new number 1 Indian takeaway. Well done Shuhag!

We have been going here for years and the food has always been delicious. The staff are always friendly. Good value for money. We were a bit unsure about going but they followed the Government guidelines re the Coronavirus. We look forward to going again soon.

This Indian is the tasted in Essex and the best value never had a bad meal recommend you all try there

We have visited Shuhag both eat in and mostly l guess takeaway we hadn’t visited since last year as we were travelling for a few months last Thursday Husband and l decided we’d go have a pick or two again it was well social distanced although only about 5 customers service as usual was great food as normal beautiful and it’s great to have our local Indian restaurant back in operation again after lockdown we shall visit again very soon lm sure

Went to make use of the government eat out scheme Food quality was good , portions very small though on mains rice potatoes the exception being the Nan breads which were big and very nice but the thing that really annoyed me was the bill came out and they didn’t apply the discount until I prompted them to which there was no argument it was changed I’d call it trying it on

Had a takeaway delivered on Saturday and the food was superb. Best take away I’ve had from the shuhag is it because delivery’s only but the food was faultless I put money in envelope and left it on Matt and driver left food. So took it out and washed hands after putting wrapping in outside bin. Well done Abdul and Mohammad keep the quality up lads

HEAT! That's right. This is the only Indian Restaurant that I have found who understands the extra dimension Chili can add to a dish. I have never understood the misnomer "Spicey" when it is not spices that add heat, but chili. Never the less, these guys have the balance perfect. Their Chicken Tikka Dhansak is full of large firm lentils which I am addicted to! Their Garlic Chicken is to die for! Their Nan Breads are so fresh & fluffy! And the size of their Chicken Tikka pieces are nice & big! Oh & if you like your poppadoms, these crunch like none other! You're gonna need a Sound Bar to hear the TV! lol We're now working our way through the chefs specials which is a whole other pleasure in itself! I've been eating food from The Shuhag for over 15 years now. And apart from the odd misplaced Rice here & there, the service is impeccable! And the food tastes stunningly accurate every time. I just wish it wasn't so expensive in the UK. But for a treat once a month, it's perfect. Show these guys some love! They've worked hard to attain these standards which is why we order all the way from Rochford. Sorry but no one around here has the same character of taste as The Shuhag. Thanks so much for cheering us all up with your recipes guys. I really love your food so much nom nom nom! lol

For a night out with friends, a great welcome, tasty menu, reasonable prices and a reliable standard of food, we can’t beat this local restaurant. We’ve been visiting it since about 1980 and can’t think of a nicer place to go for reliable, good food.

Great menu, lots of choices. Friendly staff. Quick service and tasty food. Would definitely go again best Indian restaurant in the area.

Would have given 5 stars except fish curry was a bit bland. All other food was great owners recommended the fish curry so what is good for them may not suit the customer

Once again the shuhag has served me a fantastic Indian curry it’s the best in the area by miles. Service is always spot on no matter how busy it is and the food is so tasty. Love the place and the people .Been going here for years and always good and tasty

Went here for the first time on Saturday night with a group of friends. Seven of us all choosing different things, both for starter and main, and of course drinks, and the staff coped well. The food was very nice, and the portions were a good size. The decor in here is a little tired, but it was clean. Altogether it was an enjoyable evening. We will return.

Had a takeaway. I reviewed this last week and it appeared as a restaurant in pontefract. I got my takeaway from the one in Hockley Essex.

We were all extremely appalled by the service received. The evening was arranged by my friends children to celebrate their late mothers birthday.

Unfortunately this meal was a big disappointment. Upon arrival we were greeted by two young lads who worked there and couldn’t work out what table our reservation was.

I went to the Shuhag with a few friends last week. On arrival, we were greeted by friendly staff and quickly seated. For starters, I had a chicken tikka and a king prawn dhansak with onion bajis for the main. Overall the food was delicious and well spiced. Would highly recommend to anyone in the local area looking for Indian food!

As this restaurant was local we have tried it a couple of times. Felt the staff were a little surly and the food tasted the same for every dish, albeit quite reasonably priced.

I have been using this restaurant now for the last 20+ years. The fact we have regular takeways and also eat in should speak for itself. The staff are extremely friendly and the food has always been of the highest quality. Well worth a visit.

Went there last Saturday warm welcome from Hamid and Abdul food was very high standard a perfect end to a great evening out .

We spent £35 on a family takeaway. There was no free poppadums or onion salad as advertised on the online menu. Gastoba Chicken and King Prawn rogan josh had no heat at all as if they forgot to put the spices in. We ordered Prawn Makhani which is a butter based tomato sauce with medium heat and ended with a korma cheese sauce.

Seems to have gone downhill, it has always been inconsistent varying between acceptable and good and you could tell the difference between the Friday and Saturday Chef's but the last couple of takeaways have been less than acceptable. Last night the onion bhajis were not cooked through and on the previous occasion the nagaria had undercooked onions. Plenty was left uneaten as it was so poor.

Dreadful luke warm , tough food, grubby inside and out. Shame shadona closed. Very unwelcoming staff, really unpleasant experience.

Had our first meal here last Saturday. Whilst it doesn't look the most inviting restaurant from the outside the staff are very welcoming, attentive and courteous. We had the usual popadums and dips to start followed by our mains which included a prawn dish, pilau rice, sag bhaji, plain omelette and paratha. The food was very tasty and nicely presented. My only criticism is that the omelette was very expensive and even more so considering the price remained the same despite declining the chips it comes served with. A salad to replace the chips would have been nice. That said, the meals were delicious and the service very good

Was passing and fancied eating,This is the ONLY Indian Restaurant for miles, don't look enticing from the outside, there is a carpark round the rear BUT that don't look welcoming, theres even a ticket machine and notices about failing to buy a ticket, with old cars and work vans parked all over, confusing,should you park there, is it safe, is it 'free' and for restaurant use or for everyone from the pub over the road, will you get clamped if you don't buy a ticket...who knows, regulars probably do, so I parked in the Council one next door for free after 7pm.

Tres de nosotros fuimos aquí tanto el servicio y la comida no era buena. Todos seleccionados diferentes platos principales, como solemos hacer en India, así que podemos compartir y probar diferentes platos. Cada plato no tenía sabor. Mi hija pidió un curry de verduras sin sabor curry y era como comer sopa de verduras y los demás platos no estaban mucho mejor. Tuvimos que pedir bebidas. Recibimos un mal plato y naan pan. No te molestes

In all the years iv been going there this Sunday I had the worst Indian food ever I will not bother going there again. All I got from the boss was sorry and 25% discount. Was not good enough why ?

We have been visiting the Shuhag since it opened, many years ago. We always enjoy the food and the warm welcome there, even more so since Abdul took over. The food is, I believe, the best in this locality. The service is excellent and we always feelwell looked after. Their home delivery service is always prompt and generously good. We order extra and freeze what we don't eat. It's great when re-cooked. I'd recommend the Shuhag to anyone.

Visited on a Saturday evening. Started off quiet and picked up as the evening progressed. Food was great value for money, large portions. The chicken chat starter and the lamb balti were excellent. Service was dissapointing.

We've eaten here twice now. Once as a take away and once in the restaurant. Both times the dishes we ate were way too bland. The first time we thought the chef had forgotten to add the chili so when we went again we deliberately ordered a spicier dish (rogan josh) which is described as medium hot on the menu but again it was extremely bland.A shame because the restaurant itself is very nice. The food is obviously aimed at an English palate.

Reasonably priced.The takeaway service is just as good and can be delivered.The Shuhag has been going since 1989. It's not easy to see why.

Had a take away this week and the food was so dissopointing come on you can be the best around then you let it all go and become the worst. I want to give you 5 stars but not this time.

Ate here on a Monday night, & had a really good experience. The Shuhag's interior has had a bit of a refurb lately, and I hadn't been there for a while, even though it's our local curry house. The place was reasonably busy for a Monday night. The Staff were attentive and welcoming, the food was tasty and great (spiciest Prawn Dansak we've had in a long time, and Chicken Julian flambéed with Brandy delicious), decent winw choice, plus a free shot of Baileys at the end of the meal. Also accepts Gourmet Society cards.

my wife and I came here around 9.30pm on a Friday night. Have been before on many occasions. Took a long time to get our main course, around 35mins. When we finally got our food it was not hot and looked liked it had been standing in the kitchen for some time. We complained that it was not hot (temperature)and very dry so they took it away and within 2 to 3 mins they returned it hotter and a lot more moist, not sure what they had done with it. Generally disappointed with food. When we asked for the bill the manager gave us around 10% discount off the bill.Also my wife used the toilet but said the door would not close, when we mentioned this to one of the waitors he said it had been like that for a while now .Not sure I would visit the restaurant again.

My chicken dupiaza was flavourless and the chicken was not moist nor tender. Very poor that bottle of water left on every table is actually chargeable at just under £3. I thought it was free. Although just down the road well short of being anywhere near the top twenty in the area.

This is our 2nd visit. The restaurant is small, the decor is nice and the food is fine. I was a little disappointed with the service our waiter looked bored & uninterested a smile goes a long way.....

We visited on a Friday evening. We have been before and had takeaways on many occasions. This time we waited about 10 mins to be seated and from then on the service was pretty slow. We felt as if we were more of a nuisance, taking up table space. The usual smiles and happy service were sadly lacking. It was courteous but just no real customer service. The food took a while and we had to ask to order drinks and then chase them up. The food was ok, but the Tikka masala was pretty bland and sweet and tasted very similar to the Korai. This is not an awful restaurant - I just wouldn't rush back, especially given all the completion that is around - there are better Indian dining experiences.

Moved out of town but not too far away to still drive there for a sit down meal, take away always arrives hot.

Very good food. Although quite small a very nice restaurant and good service. Easy free parking, although I live within walking distance! Very good takeaway service too.

We were advised that a Sunday buffet was available, it was not. The food was tasteless and cold the staff were unhelpful and there was absolutely no atmosphere. I would say that this restaurant is the very worst I have ever eaten in and neither I or anyone in my party would eat there again

All the same colour and just about all the same taste, average, wont be back. Had to wait ages to order even though their was only 3 or 4 tables occupied.

Haven't been to this restaurant for a couple of years, and really enjoyed our meal this time. The decor has been modernised since our last visit and is clean and bright looking. The meal was delicious.

Disgusting ... Toilets were filthy and had newspaper on the floor rather than tiles. Only discovered this after we had a terrible meal. Cold meat in liquid...

Staff not that good at bringing what you ordered, food quality average and a bit cold. It just did not do it for us. Plenty of better options around the area.

Over the years we have had plenty of meals from The Shuhag, however our most recent visit 25/9/15 will probably be our last. We love our curries but recently their standard has been slipping, this time the food was served luke warm, bland and was totally uninspiring.

We visit this restaurant from time to time and we always receive excellent food served by friendly staff in a tastefully decorated eating area. We have been going to this restaurant a couple of times each year since we moved to Hockley 26 years ago which speaks for itself.

Recently booked a table for 12 at this traditional Indian restaurant. Lovely staff to deal with beforehand, great quality food (a more than plentiful set price buffet with dishes of our choosing) and modern decor. Staff happy to add to or change the basic package on offer. We were able to take our own birthday cake to serve as dessert, which suited us and added to the personal feel of the evening. Would definitely recommend.

I chose the title 'It's an Indian restaurant' as that is exactly what it is. It's the same as many Indian restaurants with nothing to make it different. Three of us popped in early evening, before 7pm. Only two other people were there. We had good service and enjoyed our food and a small beer. We have been befor and will return.

We visited the Shuhag at the weekend and had a great meal here. The restaurant is pretty smart (very different to when I lived in Hockley as a teenager!) and the staff made us welcome. The food was great - really subtle use of spices and flavour. I'd come back for the lemon rice alone. Recommended!

Chose to dine here tonight based upon the ratings of others. After a 35 minute wait for a pre-booked table we had what was a very average meal. Starters were distinctly average in taste and appearance, however the main course was a real let down. My main course Chicken Pathia was bland, luke warm, lacking in any spice or flavour. I did comment on it but only received a quizzical look from a young waiter. My wife had a Tandoori mixed grill which was also pretty tasteless, greasy and visually unappealing. I can only surmise that this was poor night because others have rated it so highly but compared to other local restaurants this was a distinctly poor experience. Will not return again but will instead return to an exceptional restaurant in Rayleigh that really is spicy!!

We have been customers since we moved to Hockley in 1989. The restaurant has recently been refurbished, and looks great. The waiters are courteous and friendly, we've always had great meals there, and because of this return again and again, and always use their takeaway and delivery services.

I've only ever been to this restaurent 3 times but the food is excellent, I always look forward to eating here as you can always guarenttee you will enjoy the meal, service is good, nice environment, great night out Louise x

We have been coming here since it opened in 1983. It doesn't matter which dish we order - although we do have our favourites - we can always count on it being delicious. We can thoroughly recommend this restaurant. It has just been tastefully redecorated as you can see from the pictures on this website and the welcome and service you can expect is second to none. Do give it a try - you won't regret it.

Visit here for my sons birthday meal. My family will tell you I don't like Indian food, but this restaurant has changed my mind.I had chicken Malayan plus lemon rice and it was superb.The waiter was curteous and efficient. The food served hot and tasty. An ice cream to die for topped off a thoughly enjoyable meal. A revisit soon I think.

Have eaten at this restaurant many times & have no complaints about the food or table service. Shame their delivery service hugely lets them down. Placed an order & was told of a 45-50 minute delivery time. After chasing up twice, food was delivered (lukewarm) just over 90 minutes later. No apology, & second phonecall was cut off abruptly. If you use their delivery service - order well in advance & be prepared to heat up the food once you eventually get it!

I have been coming in the shuhag for over 20 years, and Ive never had a bad visit! Staff are polite and friendly especially Abdul and Hamid, food is spot on everytime, the atmosphere is wonderful and that is why I keep coming back and will continue to do so. Had not been here for a while. Went last Saturday, the place has had a bit of a refurb. The food was really good, service is excellent always. Abdul and Ahmed are once again doing a very good job. Going back tonight.

Nothing compares to the quality of the food, except maybe the friendliness of the staff. We like to try different dishes and the guys really help with suggestions and descriptions of different dishes. If you're looking for a great night out don't hesitate. And the Cobra is always cold

As a party of 9 friends & family we went to the Shuhag on New Year's Eve and had an excellent evening. The restaurant was full but service was attentive and food very good. We will surely go again.

I have been a few times and cannot fault it, better than the Shadonna down the road who let you sit there without a menu until you ask.Good service/prices.Will continue using using it.

This was our first visit to The Shuhag for a mid week family curry night and we weren't disappointed.It was quiet when we arrived and we warmly welcomed and quickly seated.Drinks and Poppadoms were soon delivered and we started tucking in - all good.Our orders were taken promptly and some queries quickly resolved i.e. How much rice shall we have?Another drink and then our starters arrived - again all very good.A bit of a wait, which was fine, before the mains arrived and we tucked into a selection of very decent curries, with plenty of rice and a very nice naan.Everyone enjoyed the meal and the service was spot on and it was good value too.We will be back.

After reading the other reviews I was expecting our experience at The Shuhag to be slightly better. Food was luke warm and the naan bread slightly burnt. Good service from staff though.

I live in hockley and have eaten here a number of times. The food is excellent and the staff were very friendly. I would Definately recommend it.

Take away and eating in has been lovely everytime. We'll 100% be returning. Staff are very helpful and friendly. Great value for money, and local for us. 5 star all round

Visited here with some friends. Live in hockley and normally order a takeaway from here but fancied popping in there for a change. Its a little cramped, but the service a food was perfect. Very friendly and good portions. Enjoyable evening and left full.
