Although we did not stay here, whilst visiting the area, we stopped in on several occasions because of the name (if you know you know). What an amazing and friendly welcome, run by family. Even though we were not staying here, we were made to feel like guests in the family home. Would highly recommend and when we are back in the area we intend to stay .

Very friendly staff and helpful staff. Evening meal was very tasty, hot from first mouthful to last and very good value. Clean comfortable room with everything that I wanted. Very good base to stay for a hospital appointment at Shepton Mallet. Shepton Mallet has everything you need within walking distance of The Shrubbery.

Wow well...what to say. Unclean. As you can see from my pictures there was a lot to be desired at this place. Problem was it felt a bit fawlty towersish, the staff appeared to be the type that would have got a bit funny with me raising an issue. That coupled with the fact I was aware of their cleaning standards meant that I cleaned the bathroom myself. Not sure if I just got a duff room but the bathroom was gross, carpet on the floor of a hotel bathroom is a hugggggeee no no. The floorboards creaked if you just looked at them the wrong way. Smelt musty and of cigarettes. Furniture all very dated. Just disappointing experience really.

I popped into this establishment for some refreshment to break up my journey home. I have noticed that every Small City / Large Town has it's slightly stand out, appearance only, hotel; recent experiences, Oxford, Taunton, Malvern actually the list is too long to mention, but despite looking good on the outside they tend to be very bad formula inside, either someone's budget Conran or 'old folks home'. Small towns are no different, again I could name a lot, same deal. So I believe that if somebody enters your establishment for 'just a drink' they should be treated as though they are offering a tender for taking over the entire place for a week, food and drink included, because you never know who you are talking to. I was made to feel like an inconvenience, probably because I was the only person there. General advice, for accommodation always seek out the local upmarket B&B and ask for recommendations on where to eat and drink. Pubs and pub grub, owner managed Free Houses. I will not be going back here, and yet according to the reviews, most people love it!!

We stayed at The Shrubbery whilst we were working at the near by Bath and West Show Ground. The Hotel building was very old but it has been kept in lovely condition. We ate at he restaurant 3 out of the 4 nights we stayed and all the meals were freshly cooked and really tasty. The best value for money was definitely the steak offer night. The restaurant and bar was packed, so this is obviously a favourite with the locals too. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. We had a large van that we thought maybe difficult to park when we returned later in the evening but the owners could not have been more helpful by reserving us a space big enough for our vehicle. Actually nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff. I would highly recommend this hotel for accommodation and food.

If I could rate the shrubbery 0 stars I would. I can honestly say that I have never had such a bad experience at a restaurant before. I went for a meal here with my girlfriend and her family and we were made to feel completely unwelcome from the moment we arrived. Everything we did or asked for seemed to be an inconvenience. When we complained about the service to the manager she handled it in the most unprofessional way I have ever witnessed in my life, to the point of being offensive. I will not be going back.

This hotel is in a quaint listed building in the centre of Shepton Mallet. There is a bar and restaurant but we were too late for dinner. The rooms are well appointed and have comfortable beds. The bathrooms in an old building like this are slightly problematic. Mine was incredibly cold first thing in the morning because it was a cold rainy day, the heating was off and the enormous single glazed sash window had no draught proofing. Professional draught proofing makes a huge difference.Great breakfast and friendly staff

First visit here and so impressed. Four steaks with all the trimmings with two bottles if wine for £50 got to love `steak night`. Excellent service and value. Relaxed atmosphere and lovely contemporary surroundings. I just loved this place. A choice of Rib eye, Sirloin or Rump for this price is amazing. I also thought their main menu looked great and will be back to try out. This place is truly a hidden gem and should be packed out every night. Keep up the good work.

We were recommended the Shrubbery by the place we were staying. We were a little late arriving ..8.45...and restaurant was too busy to accommodate us probably due to the steak night offer. We settled for the bar meal .The place is comfortable and appears spotlessly clean. The food unfortunately was mediocre and expensive for what it was. Desserts looked reasonably priced.wine was very reasonable and had a very nice bottle.ok for a lunch maybe or one of the deals but would'nt pay full price from bar meal menu.

Had good reviews so my wife and I decided to give it a try while we were in Shepton Mallet. The restaurant menu outside the building shows open until 9pm. We arrived at 7.45pm on a Wednesday night only to be told that the kitchen was now closed. What sort of a restaurant closes its doors at 7.45pm??

I've been a few times with my husband for a drink. But we usually end up moving on elsewhere after one drink. Don't get me wrong the hotel is lovely, decor amazing, upmarket and classy. Seating is smart and comfortable. But the drinks are quite expensive, and there isn't much of a selection. We actually had our afternoon tea reception here, after our register office wedding. The owner put on a nice basic spread of sandwiches, scones, cream and jam and tea/coffee- even letting us put on our own music, and have the kids running around for a while. I would definately come here for a quite lunch, but maybe not with the kids. It's too expensive to spend a full evening here with drinks costing around £8 for a double & mixer, and £23 for a bottle of wine/Prossecco. I's not really really expensive. But then It's not really that posh or upmarket either. I think they could lower prices a bit, and make it a bit more welcoming, There is no atmosphere, and you almost feel out of place if you start to losen up and tell silly jokes or laugh loudly. The atmosphere is luke warm at best, from the point of view of locals going in for a drink. I image out of town hotel guests , get a better, warmer reception. I cant comment on the hotel rooms, but imagine they are clean , comfy and of a good standard- if the hotel/bar is anything to go by. I just think it has so much potential, and maybe a warmer welcome- and more reasonable pricing might encourage more people to visit on a regular basis.

Having had a really good meal in the Shrubbery some years ago we recently popped in for an evening meal, and was pleasantly surprised. With its roaring fire and cosy atmosphere it was quite a treat on a cold Decembers evening. We ordered the Mezze to share and was amazed at the amount that arrived, it was exquisite! We have returned several times since and have never been disappointed, the atmosphere is welcoming, the hosts are friendly and the food is always excellent. Nothing here not to like! Will continue to be using this restaurant, hopefully for many years to come!

Chris and I booked a table for a family get together, and we all had a lovely evening. The food was very good, Chris had steak, his Dad had fish, and although I'm the only vegetarian and chose tagliatelle, my Mum, sister, and Chris's Mum all chose the other veggie option because it looked so good! For once I managed three courses, and the trifle was absolutely delicious. We had a really enjoyable evening, with a lot of laughter, in a nice relaxed atmosphere.

Have been in for the lunchtime menu. I have to say that the choice in the 2 for £10 lunch menu is very good. There is not alot of choice but it is varied. They also do the usual panini's etc so there is a good choice. We went overboard and also had a pudding. Both were excellent and good value for the price. We sat our in the garden and although its by the road and car park it is suprisingly quite. The garden area is very well kept and being walled if the sun is out is a bit of a sun trap.

We visited The Shrubbery last weekend for the first time in ten years or so. We were pleased to find a relaxing atmosphere along with very good food. The staff were friendly and attentive and they made everyone feel welcome. Went to the Shrubbery for the friday night steak night. Two very good steaks and a bottle of wine for £25.00. The resturant was very light and bright and overlooked the garden. On looking at the menu a steak was £16.00 so for the two with a bottle of wine was very good value. The steak was excellent but if I was paying the full price I think I would want more than a very small bowl of chips with half a tomato and some lettuce leaves. The food comes out on the plate as you would expect in a classy resturant but then you have paper servettes. Not sure who was who but a couple of people attending in the resuturant were wearing jeans which didn't really go with the decor. If you want to be a higher class resturant then I personally think you have to dress the part and match the surroundings.Overall the steaks were excellent and for the money very good. If you want starters and puddings this could put your bill up to around the £45.00/£50.00 mark.

Please note that this is a review of the restaurant only.....We decided to book a meal at the shrubbery for my mothers birthday, we were met but a very unhelpful waitress who was very concerned about the amount of time our food would take to cook (we were eating at 20:30 and got the impression the chef wanted to leave at 21:00).When the food arrived it was dry and tasteless, it appeared that it had been reheated. Whilst trying to make the most of the evening the manager hinted to us that we were being too noisy (not the case) and the lights were dimmed in a blatant attempt to get rid of us.If it really was a problem to eat in a restaurant at 20:30 on a friday evening it would have been much appreciated if we were informed of this at the time of booking. We will not be returning.......
