Fab Sunday lunch, good portions with excellent quality, large variety of veggies, (with Christmas flavours +Brill gravy! The staff were very attentive, friendly and efficient. The food came out fairly quickly. Puddings looked great but sadly couldn't do one after the lunch! Good beer and wine selection. Nice village location and views over the churchyard. Plenty of parking at rear of pub. Best to book.

We just enjoyed a fantastic Sunday Roast at The Shoulder Of Mutton Calverton . We all had delicious starters (prawn and salmon cocktail, venison scotch eggs and mackerel rillette) followed by the best roast dinners we have had in ages! Meat was cooked beautifully and the selection of veg was fantastic and so tasty. Plus an enormous yorkshire pudding to top it off! Staff and service was great, friendly, polite, helpful and efficient. We will definitely be back! 😀

Just had the best roast at the shoulder of mutton in Calverton. This is our second visit and each time the food and service have been faultless! The roast dinner comes with a huge selection of veg, each cooked and flavoured beautifully and the meat (we had beef and pork) is melt in the mouth tender. If you haven’t tried it yet I would highly recommended! Best Sunday roast in MK for me!

The food was absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection. I had one of the vegetarian options. I had the mushroom Wellington, all the vegetables were cooked to perfection with so many different ones on the plate could not believe how many different types of vegetables! the Yorkshire puddings the largest I’ve ever ever seen! Also, the lamb and the pork were cooked to perfection apparently and again all the vegetables on the plate the roast potatoes were all delicious . The side dish of cauliflower cheese there was plenty for three people to share and always extra gravy and potatoes on request if wanted . Came away feeling incredibly full and the food was such good quality and so well cooked . We have been three times now and definitely will be going back . The staff are really friendly. The atmosphere is lovely and it is also dog friendly.

This afternoon me and my grandfather decided to go for lunch in an unfamilar location and we came across The shoulder of mutton. My grandfather and I, always dine in pubs for lunch up and down the country and I must say that this experience was excellent. I ordered the chicken breast roast and it was extremely flavourful, I was furoughly satisfied with the service except for the fact that my coca cola was flat. Minus this small error, they replaced my drink with no hesitation and I will be returning in the future!

We had a very enjoyable lunch here, beautifully cooked and presented. What a pity that the restaurant was nearly empty. This is a lovely pub in the beautiful small village of Calverton. It's tucked back off the road so look out for it.

I was quite disappointed with my recent visit. The staff appeared disengaged, openly expressing dissatisfaction about their shifts, which impacted the atmosphere. Additionally, tables were not promptly cleared, with dishes from previous customers left out for extended periods. Several items were also unavailable on the menu, which limited our options. It's unfortunate, as we had high expectations based on positive reviews.

Terrible place. Slow service despite pub being near empty. Car park is proper eye sore with ugly vans. Food very below average but charged as if it was michelin starred. Pub generally really dirty. Would give 0 stars if I could. No disabled toilets or baby change station. Stay well away. Update: wanted to give it one last chance yet some how even worst. one of the managers was sat on a table with a laptop drinking beer and the other was in the kitchen shouting and swearing, leaving the inexperienced staff on the floor to make multiple errors with our order and slow inattentive service

Terrible would have given 0 stars if that were an option, staff are treated poorly, expected to do back to back shifts which is illegal, even a manager was sacked for god knows what reason makes sense why there’s high turnover there because they just like to get people in to get them through the busy times and then claim they only worked part of the shift and apparently had 2 hours breaks also when again another legal requirement is to give a break within a 6 hour shift which I never got offered so plenty of out of order staff so wouldn’t recommend working with this company, the foods not the greatest tbh either as was a bit dry on a few occasions, so arrogant to say the least and to top it off made me feel like I was lying about not being paid for 10 hours they didn’t pay me for claiming I didn’t work some of those and had 2 hour breaks on the days I didn’t have any break at all, oh well hope they get the karma for treating staff poorly glad to be at a much better place now than there and of course they just ignored me when I tried to discuss why my pay was less so had to come to this if they wouldn’t respond so 🤷♀️ wouldn’t recommend this place I’ve had my fair share of bad employers but this one I’d probs give as my 4th worst out of 10 so don’t go to this place.

I came to the pub for lunch with a friend in 2024, on what we were told was the opening day. The welcome was warm and the ambience of the place perfect. It was clear that the new owners had put a lot of thought and effort into renovating the pub / restaurant and garden areas. The food was excellent, both in quality and quantity. I had no hesitation in bringing my family to the pub for lunch at the end of September 2024. To say that I was disappointed would be an understatement. We waited over 40 minutes between starter and main course. When the main courses arrived the Linguine was cold and the Caesar Salad, which had been ordered specifically without anchovies came with anchovies (potentially dangerous). The kitchens solution was to remove the anchovies manually, instead of preparing a fresh salad and return the dish (clearly very dangerous to someone with an allergy). The Linguine was returned within two minutes, having probably been heated in a microwave. What a shame as I I had been telling my family what a wonderful venue it was. I will give it one more try in the hope that this was a one off. I would like to commend the young lady who was front of house. She was absolutely brilliant and was the shining light of the afternoon.

We booked a table of five in the week, reserved for Sunday lunch. The moment we arrived the apparent chaos sunk in. The staff had no clue we had reserved, even though the pub confirmed the day before, and managed to cobble together a table in the corner, which was a little annoying but fine. The place was full, with people eating which was a good sign, but suspicious signs lay everywhere of a place that had bitten off more than it could chew. Glasses piled high on the bar, tables left with half eaten plates of food, staff looking stretched or not knowing what to do. We sat down on the basis that, being in a restaurant we would get some service to the table. An awkward amount of time passed after the member of staff set the table up disappeared, and asked to order some drinks a couple of times before a terrified looking individual came to take our drink orders. Meanwhile whispers of ‘no lamb’ could be heard, ironic being sat in a pub called the Shoulfer of Mutton. We asked how long food would take from ordering, and 20 minutes was aired as a guess. The atmosphere was strange & tense and I slowly began to feel sorry for the very young staff trying to hold things together. No food order taken we decided to leave after three futile attempts to order. We had received our drinks, didn’t finish them and hung around to pay, but alas the staff were too overwhelmed by the volume of tasks we left without paying, and will continue to contact them tomorrow to settle. Shame this happened, as we heard good things about the Sunday lunch & have eaten there in the week which has been very nice. Ended up going to the Cock Hotel so our 5 year old could eat, and pleased we did! The ratings reflect & justified experience. Couldn’t give a zero star for food, as had none. If the owners don’t know what they’re doing, get some help to get things running smoother. People talk, and sadly this can kill a business. I hope they can implement some changes & thrive in the future, or this was just a really really bad day.

Great food and service, we visited The Shoulder of Mutton for sunday lunch, would definitely recommend - on arrival the pub was busy and our table was next to where the live band was due to play however we were promptyly offered an alternative and relocated. Only downside was the live musice was quite loud, maybe not neccessary for a busy Sunday lunch service?

A Friday night, quite busy but not packed. Very slow bar staff who were poor and didn’t keep tab of who to serve next so I ended up waiting a long time. Staff brought out orders but didn’t know what they were so had to go back to the kitchen to find out what they were serving. Food orders seemed to get lost so the wait for food was very long. At least the food, when it arrived was very good, which saved this from being a one star review. I really think the serving staff and bar staff need a lot more training to improve this place.

Worst meal my partner and I have ever had. There was barely anyone in there, which is fine, but we had an extremely long wait for our food when we were the only people eating in there. The food itself was sadly disgusting and inedible. I never thought I would say that about a restaurant but here we are. The mac and cheese was hard and tasted sour, the chicken tasted like salt and washing up liquid. Booking fee of £20 was not taken off our bill and was never refunded. We didn't stay for dessert and it took forever to get the bill. Very disappointing.

Having made a booking for a Friday evening I had to cancel due to my wife falling ill. I phoned them to cancel in good time, they were super understanding and advised they would refund my £20 deposit immediately. I chased up the refund a few days later only to be told they had decided not to refund stating some spurious policy. Of course if I had known this was the case I would have taken a friend or gone solo - £20 is a lot of money! It all felt pretty shady and left a bad taste in my mouth - I understand small businesses need to be protected from no shows etc but this wasn’t one of those occasions. They did eventually offer £20 off my bill but to be honest I don’t fancy going there now, really poor experience and attitude from the staff. Be careful with your deposits folks, if you cancel in good time it may not come back!

A Slice of pie Heaven at The Shoulder of Mutton Pub, Calverton Nestled in the heart of Calverton, The Shoulder of Mutton Pub is a hidden gem that promises a delightful experience for all. Recently attending their amazing Tasty Pie Night, I was immediately drawn in by the cozy surroundings and welcoming atmosphere. The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the pies – each one a masterpiece of flavour and texture. From lamb and wild garlic to inventive vegetarian options, there was something to satisfy every palate. The quality of ingredients was evident, and the skill of the chefs truly shone through in every bite. But it wasn't just the food that impressed me; the staff were attentive and friendly, ensuring that every guest felt valued and well taken care of. Their genuine passion for hospitality added an extra layer of warmth to the already inviting ambiance. Adding to the buzz of the evening was an excellent quiz, which kept everyone entertained and engaged throughout the night. It was the perfect opportunity to bond with friends...about Friends the TV show while testing our knowledge in a relaxed and enjoyable setting. Overall, my experience at The Shoulder of Mutton Pub was nothing short of exceptional. Whether you're craving a delicious meal, seeking a lively atmosphere, or simply looking for a cozy spot to unwind, this charming pub ticks all the boxes. Ironically, The Shoulder of Mutton had no lamb... or chicken, or most of the starters. No doubt due to a confusion regarding opening times for Sunday Lunch. The website says until 6.45pm and bookings can be made online until then. On arrival, having booked for 6pm. we were told by the staff who were clearly not expecting us, that the kitchen closed at 5pm, however, after consultation with the chef we were told that they could feed us as it was still warm! That should have been enough warning to leave. The resulting roast was mediocre. The desserts were better though. As a consequence of a no doubt busy Easter Sunday Lunch there was also no decent draught beer (Doombar has been anything but decent for years). 2 further tables that arrived behind us left, a total of 7 covers lost. Come on brothers, please sort out your website and booking system and get rid of the deposit requirement, which always results in having to remind the staff to take it off the bill, after they present it, as it did with us. Not a great experience I'm afraid, not sure when we'll return, which is a shame asthe pub is at the end of a nice walk.

Wow! What a wonderful night we had. Drawn to the pub by the Stony Stratford Mummers as we knew they would be performing there, we booked a table. We skipped starters and afterwards, having seen some of them arrive for other diners, I rather regretted that. But the main course was amazing, with an enormous bouquet of flavours. The quantity impressed me first of all, and then so many delicious tastes. Our meal was scrumptious! One of us had the crumble, the other the trio of cheeses. Again the quantity was impressive and the attention to variety was great. When the bill came, we couldn't quite believe it and checked it carefully - we'd expected we'd spent much more. So all in all a most splendid evening and a great way to start our Christmas. We will most certainly be back to sample other items on their very appealing menu. Before I end this I must just say how helpful and attentive the waiting staff were and I felt we were all firm friends before we left. You've guessed it, yes, I can thoroughly recommend eating here. The pub has been completely overturned in every capacity. The food is now of such a high quality; homemade, tasty and hot, with a diverse menu, offering several options to suit all tastes. The service is fantastic, so friendly, efficient and above all else the pub is now cosy, clean and atmospheric, with a warm decor. It’s a different pub, and having not visited the pub for several months before the Supper Brothers took over as it was cold and only offered yellow food, we have made bookings for Christmas and the up coming weekends. Went for a family gathering of 32 people. Absolutely fantastic. They couldn’t have been more helpful. The food was lovely and the drink selection was great. Plenty of parking and a really nice setting.

We arrived with a table booked outside for the two of us for two at 6pm, we had two starter nibbles between us, followed by spicy lamb meatball and rice for me and homemade lasagne with salad for my wife, then we were very full so to finish off we shared a chocolate sundae which was also home prepared. For drinks, I was unashamedly drinking my favourite lager (five pints, it was a very warm evening) my wife, not to be outdone, had a double gin cocktail, large glass of sauvignon blanc and a double baileys over ice. Luckily we are able to walk there and back, the dog had a great time and so did we. The bill was outrageously reasonable at £75. This was the best night out for a very long time , well organised, friendly and relaxed. we left at about 9pm, well fed and watered. Mark Cowdrey

DON'T GO TO THIS PUB UNLESS YOU ARE A LOCAL - YOU WILL NOT BE WELCOME. Do not park outside the pub, under any circumstances, if closed, otherwise you will be told, violently, to leave the premises. Strange atmosphere, will definitely avoid.

Just had a delicious Sunday lunch which tasted just like a delicious homemade lunch! Food was really good, generous portions & friendly staff providing great service. Very good value too! Pub has a typical village pub feel without the feeling that you are not welcome that you get with other “local” pubs. We will return.....give it a try too!

A group of 4 , having a three course christmas meal . A lovely warm fire {on a cold wet saturday evening }maintained throughout the evening ; nice welcome from Gary the pub landlord. Timothy Taylor beer on draught amongst others, plus Stowford press cider on draught . Hearty minestrone soup ( missing croutons) freshly prepared , followed by scrumptious Turkey roast ( albeit without Yorkshire pudding) . Of the 4 of us , two had bland pannecotta but 1 had scrummy chocolate pud & 1 a delicious christmas pud. Overall a big thumbs up . As locals we like the exterior improvements & wonder if 2019 will bring interior tweaks of improvement charm . Thanks for a nice time.

Lovely Sunday roast beef. All freshly cooked with gravy clearly made with the meat juices. Pudding was like a big hug in a bowl. Home made Apple crumble with a home made caramel hint custard. Also a good wine And real ale selection. Sadly foid was just too good to waste time taking pictures. You must visit to see for yourself.

Prebooked. Also stayed the night in annexe. Beer was excellent. Proper food, beautifully cooked and well presented. We chose a variety of dishes all of which were great. Food was hot and very tasty. Service was excellent though pub was very busy and was a little slow - to be expected in the circumstances. Room was good, albeit the bathroom (en suite) could do with a bit of updating. Bed was very comfortable. Will certainly use again.

Quiet at lunchtime, so parking right outside, when we went but the beer is well kept, the welcome is friendly and my lunch of ham, egg and chips was really well done. Well worth adding to your list of local pubs

Great place for meal with kids - nice style in the dining room and relaxed enough to not feel it was too posh to take children. Food was delicious- great fish and kids loved their food too. Really good service.

Really enjoyed the the all you can eat wings, very tasty. Stu was very efficient and funny and quality waiter and made the experience even better. Would defo recommend the brew dog in Milton Keynes and especially the all you can eat wings.

After many years of visiting for walks, lunch and browsing,we found this lovely spot tucked away off the market square. The welcome was very friendly and accommodating and the food was excellent, though a rather large portion for a lunch trip! Hope too visit again and would highly recommend the bolognese!
