Enjoyed the food which was priced reasonably. Staff were also great. First time there but will visit again. There was a few things on the menu I'd like to try.

It was a very disappointing visit today. We waited an hour from ordering food to our food being served. When my husband went to enquire about our food, after 45 minutes and seeing three tables who ordered after us recieve their food before us, the man he asked was snappy and said it would be a few minutes as they were busy, we have been before when they have been just as busy and have had lovely service with only a short wait. I went to pay and when asked if the food was okay, I said the food was fine but we were really disappointed with the dining experience. I said we'd waited just over an hour for our food, he said you were told it would be 45 minutes and you got it in an hour, I replied that we had not been informed of the 45 minute wait at all, he spat a sorry at me and passed over the card machine, I commented that there had not even been a proper apology as I paid the pricey bill, he once again spat out a sorry, I commented back his apology was insincere and that unfortunately we would not be returning. I would not recommend this place again. It has really gone downhill. This man's attitude was terrible, and we waited far too long for average pizza and chips! There are far better places with friendly staff and fast service even in busy times within walking distance, I will be going to those in future.

Travelled from Peterborough for a weekend away and we were recommended this place by Katie who works here and it did not disappoint!! Food quality and service were both fabulous Would highly recommend !😋

A cool looking restaurant serving a good range of food. Pizza was nice. Pretty much full size pizza for the kids one which was good. Kids loved it. Adult pizza was lovely My wife got a beef rice bowl - I think it was a soy sauce based dish and was inedible. Wayyyy too salty. I think this recipe needs adjusting.

We were told it would he 45 minute wait on food (even though there were only a few tables taken) and 40 minutes after ordering we were told they were out of buns for the burger and that they could use stottie buns instead. As we'd already been waiting 40 minutes by this time, I thought I'd give it a shot but when it was served it was so dry it made the burger inedible. Tue cocktails were good and the staff did remove the burger meal from the bill but after waiting 40 minutes at 8.30pm meaning other places had stopped serving food it was very poor to be only told then they were out of buns. My first experience there, and though it's a nice looking place and the cocktails were good (again with slow service where the table next to me even asked whether there was a staff shortage), given the price for the poor quality of food and service I would not recommend.

Went at lunchtime, so it wasn't packed or too busy.

Went on a quiet night so service was great but atmosphere a bit lacking. Food was ok, but nothing out of this world, however not overly expensive either. Toilets large and clean. Staff very friendly and helpful.

Been here before but first time eating here, the wings I got were amazing so much so my shirt loved them too

Service and atmosphere are nice but both times I have been the food hasn't been worth it. Got the calzone and the dough was under cooked and just filled with nothing but peppers.

Been here twice now. First time, I ordered the vegan burger, which was fine. Nothing special but OK. Second time I had the vegan pizza. The dough tasted undercooked and was soft. I didn't like the pizza at all. The atmosphere however is brilliant and staff are nice. Would go here again for drinks, but not for food

My partner and I found this place by chance and we definitely weren't disappointed, great decor and comfortable booth area with large outdoor seating area. Staff were very friendly and they have a large selection of drinks and cocktails. Food was excellent and it is dog friendly. The only minus was my partner said that his steak salad could have done with a couple of extra pieces of meat but apart from that everything else was excellent and it is well worth the travel from Gateshead.

Step inside and its as if transported to a Hollywood film set from an adventure film. Exquisite style. panache and attention to detail, coupled with seductive lighting. A stunning design and atmosphere backdrop, to you food and drink experience. One you won't forget. The staff give that perfect subtle understated balance of trained customer service together with personality and individual attention. Good selection of food from a sensible menu, at realistic prices. We had a Texas Pulled Pork Pizza To Share with red onion and jallopinos. Wonderful flavour with the traditional jallopino slight bite back after taste. - without doubt the base gave classic proof - it had been cooked in - a genuine pizza oven (Not out the box heated up in a microwave - common in many fast food pubs). The thick hand cut chunky chips we shared - were almost a meal in themselves - perfectly cooked through they could almost be crushed just by your tongue 'mmmm heavenly.. The staff don't rush you, so you can take in the full experience and atmosphere. If you are looking for a fast - in & out - lunch/dinner - then stick to a Witherspoons Or McDonalds. If you enjoy your food and drink experience somewhere with unique class style and atmosphere, don't miss the "Ships Cat" We will head there for our 4th experience next year when we have a weeks break in Whitley Bay. Lovely food, all thought staff were not very vigilant, sat a while to be served also to be seated, and 2 tables that came in after us got seved way before us, but did enjoy the food.

Ordered 2 chicken kebabs and 3 out of 4 skewers were burnt to a crisp, the one that was edible was so bland it tasted like frozen chicken fresh from the microwave. We also ordered a chicken parmo and the white sauce just tasted like milk and hardly any cheese on top. Also waited over an hour for the food despite being told there was a 30 minute wait. Deffo won’t be back.

Average bar. Does have wide range of drinks and cocktails although the cocktail I had wasn't that well presented and didn't taste fresh, more a pre mix cocktail it seemed. Good sized outdoor seating area. Staff on the day we went seemed quite apathetic to customers and weren't especially friendly.

We won’t be back as there’s been a real decline in quality since we last visited several months ago, food service was slow and when it finally arrived it wasn’t very hot and tasted horrible. We visited on a Saturday but the restaurant wasn’t very busy yet it still took over an hour for our food to arrive. A shame as it used to be a canny place.

Called in on a Sunday and had the sharing "meat locker" platter. Can't fault it, lots of different meats and a pile of fries plenty for two and our waitress was spot on and very helpful

Food portions are huge, well worth the money. I've only ever been when it's very quiet and have sat outdoors. Spacious and clean.

A popular watering hole for visitors and locals. Staff and doormen were welcoming and friendly. Didn’t have food, but drinks were good.

Was impressed with this bar. Situated in what looks like an old port storage unit, the decor is eclectic, the food is amazing and the staff are friendly. Nice, big outdoor terrace aswell for when the sun decides to appear.

Decided to visit early afternoon. Very, very quiet. With the name of the establishment, it's location and theme, I genuinely expected a big choice of fish, seafood and shellfish. Very suprised at the food offering. Three 'seafood' items on the menu, the rest is 'expensive burger joint' fayre. We ordered cod & chips and two bowls of mussels. The place was very quiet: four people upstairs, and we were the only ones downstairs, yet the food took nearly half an hour to arrive, which I did find quite strange, although the chef was in and out of the kitchen, evidently going to stores/freezers located elsewhere and carrying stock back to the kitchen. The cod & chips were evidently fried in dirty oil, (this seems to be a reoccurring theme after now reading other reviews). Overly dark in colour and too greasy. I tried one mussel, put it in my mouth, and took it straight back out. Both bowls of mussels were inedible: looked wrong, smelt wrong, tasted wrong and the sauce was split. Son ate his fish, we sat and ate the small bowl of fries that accompanied the mussels and the sourdough crostinis. Staff saw we weren't eating the mussels and pretty much avoided us like the plague. Eventually we were approached, the lass smiled and took the plates away. I can't stress enough - both bowls of mussels were untouched. We were asked if we wanted more drinks to which we replied no, and asked for the bill. Sat for nearly 10 minutes waiting for the bill, place is pretty much empty, so I went to the bar to pay. Not asked how the meal was? Did we enjoy it? etc etc - the poor lady behind the bar knew just how bad it was. I think this is why the meal took so long to arrive in the first place, the kitchen knew there was a problem with the mussels! I politely advised her how bad the mussels were, they were untouched, they looked wrong, tasted wrong, smelt wrong and the sauce was split, the kitchen should be advised. She was evidently and obviously very embarrassed by it all. I was presented with my bill, which she then apologised for, took it off me and gave me a new bill - minus the three drinks we had! Not the untouched mussels @ £27.90, but a pint and two bottles of cider! I smiled, thanked her and left, never to return. Went to be impressed, left exceptionally disappointed. Burger joint menu. Expensive, (very expensive when you're charged for inedible food!) Poor service. Amazing interior though!

Took nearly 50 minutes from ordering to being served, ordered chicken tacos (they were fine, or so my 14yr old granddaughter claimed / but she doesnt like to fuss) brisket tacos (my wife had to send back as arrived cold) and ordered a mixed kebab (bread was cold and too much leaf salad and certainly was not worth the price) could of understood the wait if it had been busy, but place was nearly empty when we arrived and ordered - to be fare staff did take cold brisket away and returned a hot serving but myself and granddaughter had nearly finished our food at this point.

Great place to call for a drink if you're in the area.really good atmosphere and bar staff very helpful. Only had drinks.

Great menu, great place and great waiting staff. However, the wait for the food was intolerable. The food was great (that word again) but with a two year old also waiting to be fed I’m afraid there will be o return visit. It’s a real shame that the kitchen cannot cope even with a relatively quiet service.

Brilliant place, came here on a Saturday night for some bait! Booked at 18:30 as it was the last available time they do before food finishes. Sat upstairs had our food, James our server was great, couldn’t ask any more of him. We then stayed for a few drinks before walking up to tynemouth to carry on with our evening.

We arrived pretty late and missed out on food sevice,but the menu looked good and pretty varied, beer was good, so was sevice and they allowed the dogs inside, they have a nice beer garden that catches the sun for most of the afternoon, but place gets pretty busy because of this, get there early if want a table outside 😁

Possible the worst experience of restaurant on the coast. I waited an hour and twenty minutes for a my drinks to come when the restaurant was not even half full. The managers were too busy talking to themselves having a mother’s meeting while a new member of staff was stressing running around. Finally when my drinks came they said they didn’t have what I ordered after a hour and half of waiting for it. We decided to take miss on the food and just paid for our drinks after we waited a hour and twenty waiting for them. While half the other restaurant had their food severed within 30 mins . Absolute joke!!!! Do not go there horrible place 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡

After reading the many comments on bad service I now fully agree. First meal here and last. Staff were pleasant friendly but inattentive. After waiting a hour for food with a near empty restaurant and after a few attempts to hurry things along we were served. Two taco meals and one fish and wedges. Both varieties of taco were absolutely cold and we brought this to their attention.The manager did attend with apologies and offered to amend the bill, and offered us a coffee. As it was again a case of getting up and finding a member of staff to bring us the bill we decided not to waste more of the afternoon waiting for coffee. The bill was presented in full and sent to manager to amend. Really slow in attentive service and quality of food unacceptable.

Came on Friday 17th May and everything was unreal, had our food and ended up staying most the night after. Great service from all the staff.

Food and service was amazing, as a local North Shields guy I don’t know how I haven’t been to this little gem before. Will definitely be back! Mark my words

Amazing night, We sat upstairs which is just a lovely place to be, served by a young lad called Josh. Food was great, everything is so delicious, and the portion sizes are so big, definitely be back.

Had burgers in here a few times and they’re good everytime. It was quiet in there so just a nice positive greet/hello does the trick, they seemed nervous. Staff are not interested, poor service everytime I go in.

I went yesterday for a meal for my birthday after taking the dog along the beach with my husband. Staff were very friendly even with my dog. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced. The dog also got water and treats and seemed very pleased. Thank you for a brilliant day.

The service is fine, no issues. The food really isn’t good though… which is a shame as I’ve been here a couple of years ago and it was outstanding! Ordered chicken and it came out raw and cold… To be fair, once I complained, the food was immediately re-cooked and came out cooked. But we really shouldn’t be taking a bite of undercooked, cold, mushy chicken to find this out… If the food wasn’t awful, I’d come back, but unfortunately we won’t be as this isn’t the first time this has happened. Thought the new menu would have sorted this out, but it didn’t :( If you’re just going for drinks, then I’d recommend it. If you’re looking for somewhere to eat, you should 100% avoid!

I came here to have drinks and maybe food, have been before and service has always been good. Today, 6th May, I came here and waited to be seated and we were spoken to by a waitress incredibly rudely. We won’t be back. Clearly the waiting staff cannot deal with customers in a polite mannner.

Very disappointing. The food was not as advertised and the customer service was abysmal. The manager was disgustingly rude and shouldn’t actually be employed in that position. Actually quite shocking.

Amazing place on the Fish Quay, as always lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, extensive drinks menu and lovely food menu. We watched a woman speak so disgustingly to the new manager, (she was going to leave a review, so to counteract her poison over a pizza review when the pizza met the menu requirements) the Ships Cat is a must visit on the Fish Quay! The new manager is knowledgeable and friendly and the whole team are an assett! Thank you for yet another wonderful Saturday! Can't wait to come back

We went here for something to eat on April 30th. After being shown to out table we sat for a solid 15 minutes and no-one came near us so we left. The place wasn't massively busy and they had a good few staff so no excuses for dreadful service.

Mark was absolutely amazing, serving the entire place by himself, all with a smile. We were really impressed by how well he managed! Great craic as well. Credit to the business

Would just stick to drinks in future. Waited over 40 mins for food and not even busy. Food was nice but not worth the wait. Also very hot in the upstairs seating area which made it quite uncomfortable.

First visit here and it won’t be the last! Ordered the disco fever and the top loader fries. Both were delicious There was quite a wait for the food to arrive after we ordered. Staff are friendly and attentive. Bonus that it is dog friendly! They can go inside and I was offered a bowl of water for my dog too!

Visited without a reservation, bar and restaurant quite quiet lots of seats free but we were told they were too busy. We left, on way out I checked online for a table later on and low and behold I could book a table straight away. Went down to road to lobo rojo and spent my money there instead. Glad I did it was amazing.

Had lunch here today very nice. The place looks amazing first time iv been in very deceiving from outside. Food was nice quite busy so 45 minute wait but were told before ordered. Friendly helpful staff. Guinness a bit expensive at 5.50 a pint and no mirror in gents toilet but had nice time and will go back.

Went today with a group of friends and we had a lovely time. Food and cocktails were amazing, new menu today. Service was brilliant from Dan and Sophie, could'nt have been anymore helpful. I had gluten free pizza and chips which were just amazing, we will definitly return.

Monday night treat with friends first visit. Impressed with the restaurant theming and appearance. Excellent staff friendly and attentive. Not to busy so quiet atmosphere. Varied menu with reasonable prices. Good bar and prompt service. Pizza kebabs burgers flatbreads, the Parmos are great and can come with a curry twist. Great evening thanks to all the staff

Had Saturday night food here, and food was delicious. Really good portions and value for money. The decor is great, modern and lively, but the staff and service let this place down. They were not on the ball with drinks, even though it was table service, we had to repeatedly go to the bar for drinks. After food, we had to go to the bar to order drinks, but the bar man brought them over to us. He walked away and I had to ask for him to take our plates/boards away, as they had been sitting there for over half an hour. I’ve been before to this place and again, food good but service bad.

We visited The Ships Cat yesterday on the 09.02.24 and was very happy with the food that came to our table,we ordered a Monkfish and King Prawn Jungle Curry and a Chicken Jungle Curry and two Drinks thanks for an enjoyable visit

We came for lunch on Sunday and were told there was a 45 minute wait for food as the kitchen was busy, but about 20 minutes after we ordered our food came out. I had the tandoori parmo which was perfectly cooked and the bechamel sauce was delicious. My partner had the chicken kebab which he also enjoyed. Would definitely recommend

Came here on Xmas eve, absolutely lush !!! food was amazing, we had a curry pizza (believe it or not) and a kebab both absolutely gorgeous!! massive portions and reasonably priced. Service lacked at the end as we waited about 15 minutes for the bill while they all chatted at the bar but that didn't affect our opinion on the place. Decor is great and I'll definitely be back.

We had Mussels which were fab. Service a bit slow but it was busy.

Great surroundings but no atmosphere. There was a long wait for food and unfortunately it turned out to be average at best. Surly overworked staff ensured that the whole experience was extremely disappointing. Draught beer choice was poor and the cocktail I had was watery and unpalatable. With the local competition I had hoped to give my guests from out of the area a more welcoming North East experience but it was not to be had at the Ships Cat!

Had planed on going somewhere else but ended up here , arrived shown up stairs to our table , drinks and food ordered not long after waited a bit to long in my opinion, there was a young lady when we arrived but then a young gent seemed to be on his own after that, this the reason I think for being slow ( slow food was not down to him) Most of our food was ok , kebabs , burger , pizza could of of been cooked a tad longer (my opinion) , I got the chicken parmo after looking at the reviews beforehand and it looked nice and saucy how ever mine wasn't unfortunately, I'm not the person to send food back ( unless the odvious) it was edible but i had to put garlic mayo on to give it some sauce, please look at my pictures and you will under stand . This was my second time dining here and my first experience brought me back .

After placing my order at the bar, I was advised it might take 45 minutes for our food. 'We're dealing with a group of 15 people upstairs". We waited ONE HOUR for two burgers and a tostie! Only one barman working, only one waitress, she was taking orders, clearing tables, delivering food. An absolute disaster on the service front. If you are going to cater for Christmas lunch groups, staff up for it..... I would not recommend lunchtime. Plenty of other alternatives on the quayside.

Wonderful evening at this amazingly warm and friendly venue.could not fault the wonderfully attentive knowledgeable staff who made recommendations for our meal and explained the ingredients of sauces ect. Cocktails were fabulous and well priced and the sharing meat platter we ordered was cooked to perfection with a good choice of meats and plenty sides.flat breads were light and fluffy warm and soft.. delicious! the ambiance was inviting and the music not too loud but helped to create a great vibe.will return again and again ..a great night enjoyed by us all. We went there for my birthday and had the sharing meat platter. It was amazing and well worth the money. Pleased we didn't have starter and no room for anything else. We had Sophie to serve us at the table and she was brilliant

What a place for a hearty lunch for two. Nice surroundings and atmosphere. Good value and a varied menu to suit all tastes. If you visit and Sophie is on duty you are in for a good laugh and excellent service she's a star.

Perfect lunch stop off during a walk along the quayside, food was lovely, staff were great, very reasonably priced, will be back! (Without the kids and to try a couple of the cocktails)

A bit sad really :( because the food here is always lovely. Website and Facebook page both state that they stop serving food at 7pm on a Friday (this surely means be seated and have your order in before 7) Called in with a friend at 6.30 on Friday night for a pizza, there were quite a few free tables we could see but we were turned away with feeble excuses and they didn't seem to care that we were inconvenienced, nor did we get an honest explanation. Must have wanted to finish work early is all i can think, but if they don't want my business i'll take it elsewhere. Simple as that!

Been here a few times, the food is always amazing, the only downside is the speed of service.

The food is good but the service was very poor. The 3 of us arrived at 6pm on a Tuesday and there were only a couple of other people in. We ordered drinks and when they arrived ordered our food. About 20 minutes later, the restaurant started to fill up. We started to notice people who arrived after us were getting served their food. When I spoke to one if the staff I was told our order will be out in 2 minutes. Over 10 minutes later the food arrived all in all about a 50 minute wait. We decided not to ask for more drinks or dessert. When I asked the waitress for the bill she asked if everything was OK. When I said the food was good but the wait was to long she just rolled her eyes and walked of after taking the payment. We ended up going to Iceland for a bottle of wine and a dessert.

Great food and choices... clean and decor was interesting. Staff were very attentive.
