I knew I only had one chance to have a traditional Sunday Roast in London, so I did my research and chose carefully. The Ship Tavern delivered on every level. The food, ambiance, history, and location really ticked all my boxes. Our party of three, all decided on the beef option. Included with the perfectly cooked, medium rare meat, was a Yorkshire pudding, roasted potatoes, a medley of root vegetables, gravy, and horseradish sauce. We were all so full when we finished, we almost skipped dessert. Thank goodness we did not give into that foolish urge. The Kraken Rum sticky toffee pudding, topped with a little clotted cream, was amazingly delicious, and worth every calorie. 10/10

I am a regular customer of the Oak Room at The Ship Tavern and it is one of my favourite places to have a meal for many reasons. I usually have their Beef Wellington, as it is one of my favourite dishes, but even the starters are all well cooked and tasty. Also, their sticky toffee pudding is divine and I like how they serve it with clotted cream instead of ice cream like many other places. However, what really makes The Ship Tavern special is the amazing staff. Everyone (and I mean everyone) is friendly, helpful and welcoming. Even when they are very busy, they make time to make sure you are comfortable or just have a quick chat. It really makes a difference. I always look forward to my next visit to The Ship Tavern and definitely recommend it if you want to have great British food in a friendly and relaxing environment.

Unfortunately the Sunday roast didn't live up to the expectations. The place is magnificent and with lots of history, but the meal regardless the massive size was deficient. UPDATE----- I know I have tried many places serving Sunday Roast, I would say meat was a bit too red, and the vegetables had an odd taste, maybe not using excessive cabbage would help? The gravy was nice and you can ask for more which is a plus. But the Yorkshire pudding tasted a bit burnt, however good size and you would feel full afterwards

I've been to this pub a few times now, sometimes just for a drink and occasionally for dinner. The pub itself is on the ground floor and offers a good selection of beers and a nice chatty atmosphere. The upstairs though is the gem, a really lovely and typically English restaurant. On my last visit I had pork belly and it was delicious, my friends had pie of the day and turbot respectively. All the food was eaten and thoroughly enjoyed, even though the portions were enormous. Our waitress was really charming and efficient. The wood panelling and total decor is classy. Nothing to dislike in my view.

What a deliciously authentic experience! Being from the Midwest, I am a total meat and potatoes gal, often making pot roasts and such. When I learned about Sunday Roast tradition in England - I had to try it. I decided on Ship Tavern due to their incredible reviews and historic ambiance and centuries of business. It did not disappoint and exceeded my expectations properly. I chose the beef sirloin Sunday roast plate, and made a reservation online in the morning day of. Note: I was a solo diner (that was flaked on) so I recommend you secure ahead of time bc I think it was just dumb luck. They make their own house gin, so I started off with a g&t which was v refreshing. Next, the meal came. What a gorgeous plate of food! Unlike American pot roast where they use chuck typically and the veggies are cooked so soft -- this was much fresher; cabbage still had a crunch and the carrots more firm and tasted like they were straight from their garden. The meat was beef sirloin and although some pink, not raw or bloody. Tasted fairly lean with minimal fat. The potato's were my favorite and crispy on the outside and soft but firm on the inside. Everything perfectly seasoned and the gravy was a nice enhancement and not salty - perfect for the Yorkshire pudding to make it more softer bread like. Service was top notch; attentive and warm. Atmosphere was so great -- I'd compare it to HMS Bounty in Ktown (iykyk). I sat downstairs at the bar, but it was still a regular table which I appreciated and made the meal comfortable and relaxed. Thank you so much for a delightful meal. I won't forget it! PS - woman near me got the vegetarian cauliflower option on the Sunday roast menu and it looked awesome! Smokey yummy with great presentation.

🚇 Holborn 🍺 £6.90 Cruzcampo The Ship Tavern is located in a narrow alleyway near Lincoln’s Inn Fields in Holborn. The nearest Tube is Holborn which is just around the corner. This pub was established in 1549, at the height of the English Reformation when Catholicism became illegal, it was used to shelter Catholic priests and hold secret Catholic services. The pub takes its name from shipping on the now-subterranean River Fleet, which ran through Holborn in the 16th Century. The pub you see today was built by Youngers in 1923. The main bar is located on the ground floor, is dimly lit and sets a very atmospheric tone. The walls are clad in dark wood panels and adorned by numerous nautical memorabilia. The servery is located on the left hand side and has a huge rowing oar above the counter. Opposite the servery are some drinking ledges by beautiful leaded windows. Close to the entrance is a cosy nook, at the back of the bar is a comfy banquette with a few circular tables. If you head upstairs you’ll find a dining room called The Oak Room. This is a stunning setting with mahogany panelling, antique paintings, cosy booths and a roaring open fire in the winter. The beer selection was excellent, there is a good mix of familiar favourites, a couple of London craft and six cask ales. I decided on a Cruzcampo, my pint was top drawer, price point was expensive. The food menu is elevated pub classics, Fish & Chips costs £21, Roasts are available on a Sunday. I arrived just before 3pm on a cloudy Friday afternoon in April. The pub was busy with a mix of local workers and few exploring tourists. I got talking to a friendly chap at the bar who was having a few scoops before his train home to Luton. The service was first class, the team here are friendly, welcoming and were happy for me to mooch about. One of the reasons I love exploring London pubs is finding hidden gems like @theshiptavern . I loved the dimly lit ambiance, the traditional dark wood interior, the Dickensian-style candlelit dining room and the warm hospitality. This is a must visit London Pub. ℹ️ Info correct on visiting 19.04.24

The pint is an average pub in London your paying £6+ but the staffs attitude to homeless people was disgusting. A homeless man was talking to a table next to me and my friend before a memeber of staff came over and violently shoved him. The man then fell quite hard in to our standing table and the only reason he didn’t fall to the floor was because the barrel and I caught him. This treatment of homeless people or people asking for money is inexcusable and can’t not be explained with reason. After this even I spoke to the man who said he was asking for money to find somewhere to stay the night. The member of staff was hanging around and keeping a close eye on him at all time. The man then moved on without causing any issue at all. Management need to look at their attitude towards people. I will not be going back.

Went here a couple times while I'm London. 475 years old. Wow! Food is quite good with a modern menu, but still having some old favorites. I'd say that it feels more up to date than you'd expect of an ancient pub, so if you're looking for something ancient feeling and acting, perhaps try the Cheshire Cheese. Ancient-acting isn't always better though. 😉 Scotch eggs are great and they make them from scratch to order. This is a good place to grab food and a couple beers.

The tavern looks like a fine place and seems like it has good history but the management is absolutely the rudest I have experienced. We had planned a special night with visiting friends. We made a reservation on the website that we had proof of in an email response from the restaurant. We arrived on time (5min early actually). When we greeted the hostess, she said there was no reservation in system. When we asked for the manager, he told us we had missed our reservation. We pointed to the time showing we were in fact early. It became clear during the course of the conversation that they had given our table to someone else and did not want to admit it. When we asked them to honour or our reservation, the manager told us to bugger off. When the hostess finally tried to come to our aid, be helpful, and offer an alternative, the manager growled at her to shut up. This restaurant management is very dishonest. This experience ruined what could have been a special night.

I’m sure this is a lovely pub six nights out of the week but Sunday roast day is not worth anyone’s time. For reasons I can’t understand, the place was only moderately attended yet the service was slow, the food overcooked, and with no exaggeration took well over an hour and a half for an overcooked carving slice of roast lamb, a burnt Yorkshire pudding, and some braised vegetables to arrive. One person next to us actually received his meal only to immediately send it back and walk out the door without paying. The fried burrata and heirloom tomatoes we ordered on the side were truly delicious, but honestly stick to the beer here.

I’m quite surprised by the many 5-star reviews for The Ship Tavern. The building is old and charming in an old -building way. Meaning, looks nice in dim light but might be scary in full light (just supposing here, I don’t have proof). My wife and I had dinner on a Sunday evening. My beef Wellington was basically inedible, a small lump of tough super well done beef in pastry. I don’t know how to cook beef to such exhaustion without burning the pastry. Maybe it was microwaved or sat under a heat lamp forever. There was a savory gravy, very herby, but it is a mystery how the gravy was made. Certainly not from the beef Wellington. The gravy was very thick, as if with a lot of cornstarch or agar. I wouldn’t be surprised if the gravy was from a carton. The beef came with two of the saddest Yorkshire puddings. Completely flat, they might never have been fluffy. Hard disks. My wife had the haddock and she reports overcooked. On the positive side my accompanying vegetables were fine. All portions are too huge for a normal person to eat, but this vision of over-abundance might be a plus for some folks. We ordered the burrata starter. The burrata seemed to be charred a bit, which I’ve never seen before but was interesting. The burrata does not come with bread. A big football game was going on while we visited, so there was a lot of positive energy downstairs in the bar. If you must visit, stop by for a drink but don’t bother to stay for a meal.

One of the most remarkable London pubs. A gin hub, too.

Love this place! Just stumbled across this little gem as we came off the tube in Holborn in need of a drink! Ended up coming back the following day for the Scotch egg and Pork pie of the bar menu and they were the best I have ever had! Can't wait to come back!

Apparently the place has just changed hands and they had only just reopened the kitchen. Limited choice and not sure they are Pieminster pies any longer. Fish pie was nice enough, not that large a portion but adequate for lunch. Bar woman was friendly and the drinks all good. Not busy at lunchtime.

Barista Armin made me an iced pistachio coffee. It was by far the best I have ever had. Thank you Armin, great coffee and great customer service.
