Hidden down an alley, I only found this pub because I was looking for the church behind it. I stopped for a glass of wine and a toastie, both of which were above par, and had a brief respite in the tiny patio area, in the rear. Great staff. A true gem of a pub.

Didn't eat a proper meal here (hence the 4) but the vibes alone were so good I'd give it a 6/5 if possible. When traveling there's nothing better than finding your way to a tucked-away gem, and this place rocks. The one thing I'd say: go with a friend. They didn't have quite enough space to carve out a solo nook on a Wednesday night, but with a couple of pals you could easily have a great time.

Amazing and ancient pub down a narrow alleyway in Holborn. Drinking in both a 'standing' outside zone, and in a cramped but atmospheric interior with lots of original wooden furniture and panelling. Decent range of beers, at fair prices for London. Worth a visit!

Tucked down a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it alleyway in Holborn, Ye Olde Mitre is a historic pub that feels like stepping into a time capsule. Dating back to 1546, this charming spot oozes character with its low ceilings, dark wood paneling, and cozy nooks, making it a perfect slice of old London. The rich history—ties to Elizabethan England and a rumored haunt of Charles Dickens—adds a layer of intrigue that’s hard to beat. The ambiance is unbeatable: warm, welcoming, and quintessentially British, it’s the kind of place where you can settle in with a pint and feel like a local. The ale selection is stellar, showcasing well-kept traditional cask ales, and the lunch menu offers hearty pub fare—think pies, sandwiches, and ploughman’s—that hits the spot without breaking the bank. Service is friendly, with staff happy to share tidbits about the pub’s storied past. Ye Olde Mitre is a must-visit for anyone exploring London, offering a delightful pause for a pint and a bite in an atmosphere steeped in history. Seek it out—you won’t be disappointed!

At the End of the Rainbow: Ye Olde Mitre If you want a well-hidden surprise you won't go wrong by seeking out Ye Olde Mitre. This pub is so well hidden I felt as if I had found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow! It's yet another fantastic, historic London pub, where if the timbers could talk you would hear tales of literary greats, plagues, fires and lunchtime office gossips. Not only does it fuel your imagination, but the bartender also serves a mean gin and tonic - the best of my London trip this time! We visited on a weekday afternoon and squeezed into a cosy little room— finding just enough space for the four of us. It didn't take long for us to relax and strike up an excellent conversation with two local guys who had come in for an after-work catch up. What a great social space. Go and look for it on your London treasure hunt, you won't be disappointed!

Another great experience visiting the olde mitre which has stood since around 1546 and has said that Queen Elizabeth danced around a cherry tree that once stood there with Sir Christopher Hatton. One of those places you have to know where it is to find it as it’s down a little alley. Was a lot bigger than I was expecting! The front of the pub is very small (which I knew prior) but there is back room that the bar goes to as well. Lots of tables outside down the alley itself and little tables round the where the men’s toilets are. Great selection of beers especially Peroni and Asahi which is great. Definitely will come here again!
