BEWARE: In relation to the visit below, be very careful when using the pubs private car park. We received a £100 fine from the car park operators; and despite providing evidence of our visit (through bar/restaurant transaction receipt), they felt that the parking charge was still valid. No disrespect to the pub management or brewery owners, but I doubt we will be returning to what was formerly one of our favourite establishemnts. --------------------------- It's the first time we visited here in over 6 years and it's amazing how much different the place looks now. It's a nice atmosphere and really good décor well done. Quite impressed with the food too.

Paid for 2 so called roast beef and turkey Sunday dinners. Nothing roast about them, straight out of microwave. Half way through second pint before it finally arrived. Beef covered with the turkey so you don't see how pale it is. Roast potatoes lol, straight out of the freezer and dry in the middle and pale.broccoli drowned and tasteless. Colliflour cheese with lumpy bits of powdery cheese. Hard garden peas.no members of staff asked if everything was satisfactory. So no way of complaining. Ended up just leaving. Customer service went out with the tide.Paid £24 to get there just for a total rip off. Will avoid this place in future.

Tried to visit here last Saturday afternoon at 3pm. We were hoping to pop in for 2 drinks so would have been in and out. Unfortunately, the majority of tables all had reserved signs on them. That’s great for the pub but surely it would make more sense to do the same as other establishments and write ‘reserved At 5.30pm’ or similar? We would have spent around £30 in a one hour visit if we had been allowed to sit at one of these tables before the other guests were arriving at 7pm! I even asked if they were all reserved for the rest of the afternoon/night and were told yes. I find this baffling and a shame as usually always pop in after a walk on the beach. We ended up calling somewhere else on the way home instead. I don’t normally leave a low scoring review anywhere but really thought it was disappointing!

We went here for a bar meal today and the food was alright but the problems with this pub is that the food for some people can be a hit and miss and I genuinely think this place could be abit better as there was people queuing all the way from outside the pub to the bar and I would say the very minimum the improvements of this could follow extended bar as it’s abit to small, employee more staff as there time it took for the food to arrive was almost an hour and not many were in and possibly extend the pub to house more customers overall I think this place is alright but could be a bit better.

Exactly the same experience as the previous reviewer, parked in a disabled bay with Blue badge displayed when visiting for lunch. The signs requesting signing in were not obvious and nothing was mentioned at the bar despite it being very quiet and one of our party being clearly physically disabled and very unlikely to have walked to the pub. Result was a £100 "fine" for parking. As regards the response from the owners to the previous review blaming Britannia for the issue presumably the owners decided to contract the parking to Britannia in the first place, and they are certainly responsible for the bar staff not letting people know. As for appealing the fine that's a hassle and we didn't bother keeping the receipt. The food wasn't great anyway, very average. The Ship has lost a customer from this experience, we certainly won't be back. I doubt this business model will be very successful making whatever they get out of the fines but losing customers.

The food was nice and the atmosphere was. The pub was cold and the fires should have been lit tbh . All of the pubs in the town was warm and inviting. What has upset us the most is that we have a parking fine for £100 on a disabled parking bay when we displayed our badge and also payed on the same card associated with the badge !! My dad is 91 years old and we don’t need this rubbish !!! We will never use you again if this is how you treat people.. when we called to complain a young woman said did you not see the signs about parking?? What signs ? We needed to get him inside and it was pissing it down with rain !! Needless to say it was empty!! Did your staff at any point in their break from doing not much at all advise any of us about anything do do with parking? No they did not !! What more signs need to be observed in a disabled bay other than the normal rules ? Which have been adhered to

Place was cold ?? Got fireplaces so use them !! Extremely disappointing behaviour. We booked a table and parked in the disabled bay , we put the ticket on and my disabled dad who is 91 , paid for this meal !! You’re now sending us a bill for £100 as parked unauthorised. We’ve called your pub and the receptionist said did you not register your number plate ? Did we need to after parking in disabled with a proper badge and the customer was there and paid the bill ?? MAYBE IN THE FUTURE your receptionists make EVERY customer aware of your practices!!

This pub had always been a tourist trap, but it had also been a fondly loved local pub, and I have memories of it as a child and (drinking age) teen. I suppose I should be happy that in being bought by the burger king of the pub chain world that at least it stayed open but on popping in for a drink to round a day off - having come back to my hometown for a break, I was so sorely disappointed. I guess it’s not their fault that my bubble was burst, and that I had been expecting the cosy pub with its lovely old vibe that I remembered. However, I still think that setting that aside it was still a god-awful and tacky experience. A found a soulless, corporate chain food establishment better suited to being bolted onto the side of a premier inn. I ordered my drink and sat at a sticky table with cheap brightly coloured menus whilst tacky pop songs blared unrelentingly. I went outside regretting my purchase but determined not to waste it. The music continued and thank goodness it was blustery night as it was crammed with as many tables as possible and a cash-cow fish n chip shack that was, that evening, closed. I see from other reviews that the food is bally awful. How can you get it wrong? It’s the same stuff sold in hundreds (?) of other Greene Kings. You just gotta warm it up, right? Maybe it’s because in selling this mass-produced generic rubbish you rob your kitchen staff of ever gaining or expressing any skill, which I assume helps keep their pay low. As for the staff – Greene King sell port at - I believe it was over- £6 for 50ml. The lad behind the counter, (bless him ‘cos he’d clearly never sold the stuff before and was just doing his job), anticipated I was going to complain when I went back to the bar. I dropped it, he’s a cog in a corporate machine. When I originally wrote my 1st grumpy grumble about this place, management tried to put me in my place by citing law. As if I have never ordered a glass (yes a glass not a blinking £6 shot) of port before in my life. You are right management you DO sell port in 50ml in the UK… but also 70ml and multiples thereof. Whatever you want to clap back with, it’s a rip off and its probably not in your hands but rather the chains anyway. Not that management clearly care for poor reviews, they are incredibly snide here on tripadvisor as you can see for yourself. They don’t need to care for poor reviews, they tourists and day-trippers will role on in. Maybe I am just a "proper pub" snob, but this place dresses itself up as something more than it delivers... Your website has some gall to say your proud of your heritage. You ripped it all out of the place and replaced it with apps to order food and computer screens to register to park! Pillar of the community indeed! Some-one who’s job it is to spot money making opportunities simply found one in this former community hub once loved by locals and holiday makers alike. If I’d pay to holiday in Saltburn I’d be sore to find the exact same pub as in my hometown. Nah, I don't want to add fries with that.

Visited with my wife on a Thursday teatime.... I opted for the steak offer “Deary me” I left more of the steak than I ate .. my wife had the pie with mash .. or should I say Smash!! With cold Broccoli .. it is a sad affair when it wasn’t a busy time and the food is presented like this!! .. If this is the standard of our traditional pubs for the future then Greene King really need to reassess their approach! .. it is a shame as the Ship has a lot to offer but I suppose the fact that the Ship it is a seasonal pub then why should they!??

Staff were lovely; friendly and very helpful indeed. Our food arrived quickly considering it was a very busy night, but sadly wasn't quite as good as we've had in other Greene King establishments. The pie didn't have a lot of filling, the three small broccoli florets didn't seem to be cooked, and the mash - while tasty - had a texture which suggested it might be instant. Everything was highly salted too. Having said that, it really was a busy evening which might account for some of this, and as we were made so welcome we would certainly give this cosy place a second chance should we be in the area again. Perfectly located for us and the pooches to relax after a run on the beach!

We have been staying in Saltburn for a week and have visited the Ship a few times during our stay. We can honestly say we have loved it! The food and drinks have been top notch, I can’t understand why people complain about the standard of the food, it’s a pub and that’s what you get, good honest pub food. The staff go above and beyond to make you feel welcome, a nice smile when you go to the bar goes a long way and every member of staff were smiling and, enjoying their job. The manger here has an attitude that needs correcting. When he served two drinks with the same mixer and asked which one was which he just said smell them and had a very poor attitude. Then went on to accuse me of having an attitude for asking. When told that he would get a poor review more or less said he could not care. Is this the Wetherspoons standard now?

As a group of friends we regularly visited but then stoped for a while as although food good we felt the menu should have changed they also changed to no cash which did not sit well with my friends. We decided to return Friday as noted menu had changed however it is clear that there are new people running the cross keys so you can use cash. It was really quite empty for a Friday whereas previously it had been full. The service was good but the menu is lacking not enough varied choice and only one choice for vegetarian vegan. Clearly not cooked from scratch. Chips frozen and pies bought in. I had the duo chicken and have never seen such tiny amounts of chicken on a plate. In fact we all said portions were small. I left hungry. For £18.00 it was not good value for money. I did too but that was for the service from the two young people who served us at our table. Disappointed and did wonder if others felt the same and that was the reason why it was not busy. Cross keys need to offer more variation on their menu and larger potions please. Won’t be returning
