Sorry to say I had to complain about my lunch recently. I chose the cheese toastie with camembert... I had expected some melted creamy cheese... Very disappointed to be served with thick dry toasted bread with what looked like tiny shreds of finely grated cheese which was hardly visible. Almost inedible. How difficult is it to make a decent toastie?! On the plus side, after I drew this to their attention they didn't charge me for it.

This is a lovely place and the food is fantastic the chief Gemma Cowley did a brilliant job I'll return there again because the food was so good

I visited the venue in January 2025 and we all had a great time. We have family in the areas and stayed overnight at the hotel and had an evening meal and breakfast there also, all were great. The location and facilities are second to none and special mention to Anthony and Lucy, who both went above and beyond to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. We'll be staying there again later in the year.

went to The Cross Keys for our late christmas dinner. All the team were excellent. We all had a very nice time and the meals prepared by Dave were beautiful. This is why I keep visiting.

Nice place for a quiet drink with friends

Spent a couple weeks here over the Festive Period to see family and friends. The rooms are a little dated but are clean and tidy and serve a purpose. The staff are brilliant and have always made time to speak whenever I've been in the bar. The food was always beautiful and the chef Tom was willing to amend a couple of dishes slightly due to my dietary requirements. Anthony and Leanne treat the place as if it is there own and always make sure every things is a good as it can be. I will definitely stay here again and will recommend to others

Been for Sunday lunch 5th January. Staff were not attentive so food was really slow. And then when it arrives it’s cold and tasteless not sure why there is only pepper on the tables I would have asked for salt but NO ONE checked to see if our food was alright. I’m starting to give up hope that anyone round here can cook a decent plate of food. Also menu says beef served pink so why are you serving it well done!?! Expensive for the quality in my opinion.

Went with the family for a meal just after New Year. We had been previously so knew that the service and food would be good. We were welcomed by Anthony who sat us down quickly and brought our drinks order straight away. The meal order was taken by Ellie G and she was very polite and efficient. Asked if there were any allergies and recommended sides to accompany the meal. We all chose a different meal from the Seasonal Specials. I had the Glazed Ham Hock, this was delicious and hit the spot. My wife had the Trio of Seafood and again, this another beautiful dish. Thank you Dave, the chef on duty for the meals, they were all excellent. The ladies both had dessert of a salted caramel sundae, and a trio of British classics. Personally, I would have said that this was a sharing dessert, but we all helped finishing this one. Thank you again The Cross Keys team, we will be back again very soon

Staff were not very pleasant, waitress spilt chips on the table and thought it was ok to just scoop them up and pop back on plate, she then dropped a fork on the floor and just swapped it with the empty table next to us. They would not allow us to pay with vouchers and use blue light discount despite the fact that they did 2 weeks ago. The hunters chicken (they call is something else but it's hunters chicken) was the smallest portion of hunters chicken I have ever had. Not impressed and won't be going back.

We arrived on the 23 December and stayed 3 nights, including eating in the restaurant on Xmas day. The room was clean and perfectly comfortable for our 3 night stay. I particularly loved the little touches of being able to get fresh milk, and the coffee being coffee bags. The food on Xmas day was amazing and served in good time too. The customer service was equally excellent and I am so pleased we chose to celebrate at the Cross Keys. Thank you

The visit wasn't good. We got sat next to a fire that had gone out. The starters and mains were ordered but everything we wanted were sold out. The starters came quite quickly however, who has partially cooked carrots as a starter for children with a dip? The main meal took an hour to come after the starters were cleared. Whilst waiting for the main meal, all we could hear were the staff in the kitchen arguing,using explatives that my 8 and 11 year old didn't know until this evening! The mains were substandard, the pie was overly done and the kids pizza looked like a Chicago Town, microwavable one. We didn't order desserts as we didn't want to spend any more time in there on Christmas Eve. We had had such a lovely time on Christmas Eve last year that we were looking forward to it this year! We won't be going back,which is such a shame.

The room was very noisy beside the main road. Asked to change rooms but not very helpful even though the other rooms were empty. The hot tap was boiling and very difficult to turn off. When reported to the receptionist he was very aggressive. Would not stay there ever again.

This is the 3rd year we have been for Christmas lunch.This year the main course was cold no utensils to serve vegetables and l had a serving spoon with my sweet!! We will not be revisiting

Long wait for breakfast staff the first day, very good thereafter. Cold food the 2nd breakfast and the couple next to us had lipstick on a glass on the table. Horrendous mildew, damp smell in the stair well. Rest of it was great, easy to get more coffee and tea etc, warm room, comfortable bed.

Lady who served us was very nice & welcoming. Husband enjoyed his chicken & bacon ciabatta, I had steak sandwich, not the best. Will go again as convenient.

I had a 60th birthday meal here with 28 people, it was lovely, staff were great ,we stayed overnight ,room was great 👍we will definitely come again, gorgeous food, amazing staff, a little jewel, my friends come often, now I know why, thanks for such lovely memories

Had a large family meal with about 28 inc small children. We were given a separate area which suited us fine.From start to finish the staff couldn't have been any more attentive and helpful. All starters,mains and dessert delivery ran very smoothly and we had no complaints about the food. A good selection of beers are on offer. We stayed over and the room and bed were very clean and comfortable.Would gladly stay again.Thanks to all staff involved in our evening and stay

Stayed here while staying away for work, great little place! Room was nice and simple, bed was comfy, spare pillows. Restaurant side was good, reasonable price, nice food! The only fault is the shower, that was pretty naff! Comes out like a dripping tap!

Me and my family was staying close by for a little holiday weekend and we decided to pop in for breakfast, unfortunately it wasn't nice experience at all . I've ordered farmers breakfast, I don't think I ever seen breakfast presented more poorly than this one but to my disappointment not only it looked very poorly it tasted even worse, cold and not nice at all. Didn't eat any ! service wasn't any better not only stood by the bar for about 10 minutes while listening staff gossiping at the back btw we was the only ones in the pub and they did see us coming I've asked them for breakfast menus no one bothered to ask if our food was ok ☹️ , shame because pub is stunning and beautifully decorated for Xmas

First impression very good value for money. Had a lunch with the wife to suss out the place as just moved to the area. Will go back to eat as the Xmas menu looks a very good offer and value for money. The reception rooms are vast but cosy and very well presented. We did not stay in a room but the online gallery does show the hallmark of its former life as a Premier Inn. Thankfully, Chef & Brewer have invested in the public areas and have made it very appealing.

Very nice little place to stay. The rooms are decent. The prices for food and drink are extremely high for the quality that was served. On one of the nights I had the rump steak served with about 7 chips. The steak was a very poor cheap cut with more gristle than meat on it. I ended up eating elsewhere on my third night. Breakfast was OK for my 3 mornings. Only bad point was bacon that had been reheated and served.

Stayed here for two nights, the staff were very friendly and helpful. The bar and restaurant area was lovely and cosy. And the cooked breakfast was top notch!

We had a small get together with friends and family on the night before our wedding. We were roughly 15 people. I rang up a few days prior to book a table or space to accommodate our group. The lady answering the call was anything but helpful, she stated that they won’t be able to accommodate us because they will be to busy on the Sunday night. So basically turned our booking down. We all decided just to turn up on the night and risk is as the location suited all attending. Don’t get me wrong it’s a nice pub and beautifully decorated etc. The MAIN thing about this establishment is the poor service!! We were made to feel like we were an absolute nuisance from when we arrived till we left. They clearly make too much money and I along with everyone felt the same. It seemed like we gave them a headache spending our money there and we all together did spend a lot. It’s a real shame as it’s right on our doorstep, but we will never return.

We arrived today at about 1pm with our two dogs. We were greeted and pointed to the dog area. The dog friendly area is very small which wasn’t a problem as there was a table free. We were ordered at the bar and then the knocking and banging from building work started and was on and off during our time there. It would have been nice if someone had informed us that this was going on before we ordered and got settled for what was to be a leisurely lunch. The meals came after a reasonable wait, husbands steak pie huge and tasty, however I ordered the fishcake. It was on a bed of wilted rocket that was supposed to be the seasonal salad, the fishcake had all broken up it had been fried so much and the poached egg was virtually hard. I asked the waitress if that was it and she said she had checked with the chef and it was, but she didn’t want to serve it. I obviously sent it back and made a different order which was pleasant but we both ended up eating lunch at different times. No one came over to check on the second meal or to apologise. The pub was very quiet and there were numerous staff dotting about. Very poor customer service. Surely it would have been better to gain a happy customer on site rather than a poor review on Facebook. We left very disappointed. The only really exceptional thing was the dogs 4oz rump steak.

We stopped here Friday-Monday as it was ideally located for our weekend of running and race recce for an up coming race (Hardmoors Roseberry Marathon) - there's a great view of the hill from the carpark. The hotel itself looks ok but our room could of done with a lick of paint and a few more electric sockets for charging your phones and other electrical appliances we all travel with nowadays. There is a very decent 40" tv which you can cast to from your phone easily which means we got to watch the footy over the weekend which is a big plus in my view, as we love to relax after a run on the moors. We did have several Dinners here which were all tasty although our Sunday lunch was lukewarm which was slightly disappointing. Breakfast was very good and you got plenty especially with the full English 😋. The dining area had a lovely roaring fire on the Friday when we arrived and had our 1st meal but was off the rest of the weekend, so we felt a chill every time we visited for food, but we just made sure we had a jumper on - so not a big problem. Staff were all very helpful and friendly - the stand out for this hotel! No problem stopping here again

We came to The Cross Keys while on a family trip to Guisborough. The chefs, Ste and Mark, made an amazing steak and ale pie. The dessert was delicious and the service was fantastic! Ellie and Tonya took great care of us through out the whole night. We would definitely eat here again.

Another trip to the cross keys this time just for a coffee and a pastry/muffin. the white chocolate and lemon muffins wow lovely to say the least will be back here again for our monthly visits

Came to the crosskeys for a family meal. We were sat by the fire up the top. Our drinks order was taken promptly our food order was taken. Some of us had starters. Came out with in about 10 minutes. Our mains came out about 20 minutes after the starters. We all enjoyed our meals. I had the cod and chips, delicious by the way. My partner had the mixed grill and stake was cooked perfectly. We were asked if we would like desserts but we were to full. Our young waitress was very attentive and nothing was to much trouble. We will definitely book another family meal to the crosskeys.

Normally come for dinner or tea. Decided to try brunch wow we weren't disappointed had a farmers breakfast sounds like a strange concoction but it works and also had a full English one of the best I've tried.will deffo be back for brunch again 😊

Today 29th October myself and my wife visited the restaurant where my wife had creamy mushroom followed by the signature burger. I had belly pork bites followed by the mixed grill. The food was excellent, hot and very tasty. I have always had my steaks well done but Gemma (chef) cooked it medium rare and wow what a fantastic taste it was. I'm smitten now. Gemma you have switched me to medium rare from now on. Gemma you are a credit to the Cross keys & to yourself. Well done also to Leanne for making our visit a wonderful experience.

We only went to the pub, not the hotel, so can't really comment, but the pub is lovely and the service is very good. We only had a sandwich and a cup of tea, the young barman was very friendly and helpful. Great place to stop off on the way to Scarborough.

Whilst holidaying at Runswick Bay we decided on a trip to Butterfly World and spotted The Cross Keys on the way there, so on the way back we decided to pop in for a meal, which I'm glad we did. We were greeted and seated with pleasant ease & banter. After checking the menus, I chose the wild mixed grill consisting of a venison stake, a duck leg, and a wild boar sausage, homemade coleslaw, fried egg, & what I would call potato wedges, but are labelled as chips. The meal was excellent 👍 regards to the chef & kitchen staff. Mum had a lamb shank shepherd's pie, which surprised as it was a complete lamb shank complete with bone topped with mash & cheese. She devoured the whole plate full, which is the best recommendation going, since she growing older her appetite has lessened, so for her to finish means the food was superb 💕 We were looked after by Jimmy, who was brilliant and expertly handled my sister, who's humour is as dry as the Sahara and can seem spiteful & bitter at time. He took her in his stride and helped to make our visit pleasurable & memorable. Jimmy your a star 🌟 The only downside was their location, which is in a great location off a major road, but could be sign posted better as it's slightly hidden away. We originally drove past it, but it was well worth the loop back. Also note the entrance is to the rear of the building, with parking to the rear as well as the side. We did notice a couple of cars drive into the emptier side car park and decide not to stay as the car park was nearly empty. Don't make that mistake. Park and go in. You won't be disappointed.

Had a family meal at the crosskeys for my nanas 92nd birthday. It was a great night the staff were very friendly, especially lucy. The Sunday launches fantastic. We will definitely book again

Food was good, hotel room was very poor, stains down the walls, worn out carpets, damaged and aged bathroom units and bathroom full of black mould around all the seals and tiles 🤢 was only staying for 2 nights or would of been checking out and moving to another hotel ended up showering at the gym

I visited on a particularly busy Friday night, the atmosphere was great and the food was amazing (I would recommend the smothered chicken). The service was excellent, despite how busy it was and our waitress Ellie was very attentive and polite and gave us recommendations for things to do in the area as we are staying nearby for a couple of days. Overall an excellent evening and we will be visiting again soon!

This was a last minute internet booking as we’d just got off a plane and needed somewhere local and convenient for a birthday meal. We enjoyed our meal, especially the salted caramel tart which was delicious! And we must commend the lads on their impeccable service - very attentive.

7pm on a Saturday night the place was empty We had a booked table waited a long time to receive menus and even longer for our drinks order The food took at least half an hour to come and when it did most was over cooked the fish batter looked like the scraps from the bottom of the vat and fish was so dry it was sent back Mushroom pie with four chewy pieces of mushroom in it , with seasonal veg and oven baked chips. well the chips may have been oven baked but that's what you do with mc cains frozen chips! the veg was defiantly frozen veg too broccoli carrots and peas It gets worse as I found a large peice of cling film in my food with "throw out by Tuesday" written on it so 2 of us didn't eat a meal . They removed all our meals from the bill which was a nice gesture but I still won't be eating here again as I have never had a decent meal here in the last 10 years

Rooms were ok but needed a little tlc (bathroom especially). Service was good although we did wait over an hour for dinner one night. Located in the middle of nowhere which was fine for us.

The chef Dave did really well with our food tonight really tasty, we had steaks ! We come here a lot. The food is very good and staff are friendly. Of course we will be back again.

My husband and I came for dinner, we had garlic mushrooms and the fish and chips the things we were disappointed in was the large mushrooms seemed very slimy really need small mushrooms and the chips which were frozen chips you used to make the chips yourself and they were lovely. I think people are looking for home made food I could stay at home and eat conveniant food

Came tonight with friends, (staying in Wyke lodges) opposite. Booked a table easily on the phone, turned up, shown to our table. Wonderful service by all, especially Evie. We all ordered different things from the menu. I ordered Duo of chicken, absolutely beautiful. Ate everything & ordered the chocolate fondant for dessert. Oh my days, delightful. Will definitely visit again. 4 very happy campers 😁 thank you.

Popped in for lunch with my sons today. First time I've been in years but will definitely be back! Lots of choice for lunch. Settled for a steak sandwich, which cooked just as I asked. Really great service from Emma, very helpful and welcoming

Came across this place completely by chance this evening, dropped in for dinner and found the most charming ‘pub’. Great food, cosy decor and lovely outside area. Best of all - really friendly and great service from a super team!! I’ll be back again really soon!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Nice pub/hotel abit out of the way but also nice and quiet. Steph paul and tom were all amazing!

We stayed for 4 nights at the Cross Keys Hotel. The staff were really friendly & helpful and the hotel itself was lovely but we were disappointed with the room as water stains on the outside walls apparently due to a leak & the bathroom was in bad need of a revamp. The toilet wouldn’t flush properly but the manager Anthony quickly organised the repair. Must say thought Anthony & assistant manager were excellent regarding any problems. The food was good & selection also. Jim & Julie

Called in a few times for a coffee recently. Gorgeous coffee. The last time we came we had a light bite lunch cheese toasties. Not sure where the light bite bit was but they were lovely the best toasty ever. All the staff are really helpful and friendly but it was Emma who gave us all the info about the light bite lunches. So helpful and nothing was too much trouble.

Lovely food and friendly staff, although we ordered off a set menu and the system charged us at normal price, we did get a refund though.

Food was ok. They turned more people away than were actually dining..dont think they had enough staff in kitchen. I do think they have just reopend like...Paul our waiter was marvellous and probably one of the reason we will go back...

The Cross Keys (Upsall) is a great pub & hotel. Excellent service, drinks & food (Lunch), friendly & polite staff. Always a fabulous atmosphere, attentive staff, handy facilities, dog friendly, and beer garden to rest after eating and enjoy the countryside views.

Won't be eating here again. Food very disappointing. Ordered a mixed grill which at £20 you would expect to be half decent. Not so! 1 sausage, 1 large piece of gammon, 1 tiny piece of steak and a piece of chicken breast that could have come from a budgie. Along with chips, half a tomato and a fried egg - definitely not worth the money. When I pointed out the size of the chicken to the waitress I was told 'that's the size they're coming in!'. In that case maybe change supplier?? And also the attitude. I was brought another piece of chicken albeit reluctantly. Hardly surprising the place was empty. With many excellent eateries around you need to up your game Cross Keys or you too will end up a drive through coffee shop.

The Cross Keys very kindly play host to the Guisborough Silent Book Club every Tuesday night. The management were very encouraging from the start and found the perfect spot for us to gather. The staff have been friendly every week, it is a lovely cosy place for us to meet and we enjoy every minute of it. Can't thank them enough for letting us spend our Tuesday evenings here.

The food was lovely and we had the best service from Emma who made sure everything was sorted for us! Will definetly recommend and come again.

Went here for lunch on Sunday 14th, on the recommendation of a local. He did not let us down :) Lovely atmosphere, excellent service. Best steak and ale pie I've had in a long time, and the apple tart was perfect.

We don't visit as often as we like due to commitments. We visited for lunch with a friend who hadn't visited. The food is always consistent and lovely.
