A great bed and breakfast experience staying for 2 nights. A full English breakfast to die for and a very comfortable bed to sleep in set in a comfy room with en-suite shower. The evening meals were excellent with great beers to go alongside and no big screen to distract the conversation. Other guests were friendly with good conversation. Paul, Donna and the team were excellent in keeping a clean house with good conversation and banter. All in all a great experience and I’d have no hesitation in returning.

Unfriendly staff - one guy taking food and drinks orders and serving the drinks. Customers queuing in a line one-by-one out of the door. Crab sandwich was £15. Crown & Anchor is brighter, friendlier, better priced and staffed.

We stayed here for one night whilst visiting the region and did not regret it. The hotel was comfortable and the restaurant was good. The rooms were a good size with ensuite facilities. The beds were comfortable and the location very peaceful. We had dinner here and enjoyed our meals. We chose the haddock which was served with fresh vegetables and potatoes. The following morning there was a good choice for breakfast; from cereals, yoghurts to a good selection of food cooked to order. The owner was friendly.

This hotel needs evaluation, it isn’t 4star accommodation. While the room was spacious during my stay the bed wasn’t made, the bins weren’t emptied the wash basin or bathroom cleaned or the carpets vacuumed. The heated towel rail wasn’t working so wet towels from the first day remained wet up to the fourth day. The manager was grumpy & verging on rudeness when my friends came for a drink one evening when he cross examined them as to why they weren’t staying at The Ship inn. After one greasy tepid breakfast I went to my friends hotel and ate there. The whole place needs decorating & carpets etc replacing to qualify for possible 2-3 stars.

A lovely welcome from Paul and team every time we visit. The Ship Inn is a great pub, packed with charm and we regularly visit for lunch or dinner and recommend to friends. A beautiful outside garden when the weather is good. Dogs welcome and plenty of bowls of water provided for tired four legged friends. A varied menu, daily specials, great vegetarian options and always some great home cooked options. The kids love the salt and pepper squid and crab sandwiches. The chilli, steak pie and risotto are firm favourites. A great spot after a long morning at the beach, and a lovely way to spend a relaxing evening. Try the Holy Island gin - sea salt and lime. Gorgeous!

Nice bar, almost empty at 7pm, yet we were shown into the back room with no atmosphere, just the quiet, inhibited occasional voices of the 4 other occupants. My husband’s poached haddock was okay, served with plain boiled vegetables. My chicken and bacon pie was so bland as to be inedible, with tasteless chicken and a sauce in which I could detect nothing more than cornflour and water. Even the accompanying mushy peas were flavourless, lacking any seasoning. I did not have very high expectations but this was really sub-par. Not surprised that there were very few diners.

Have been here twice now for a sandwich lunch and I have to say the food was excellent and not in anyway expensive. Also, when the weather is kind, sitting in the garden is quite pleasant. I would liked to have given 5 star but decided to go with 4 as the man who served us at the bar on both occasions was not the most hospitable. The whole transaction was carried out in a seamless manner but there was certainly a lack of any kind of friendliness.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend The Ship Inn to anyone wanting to stay overnight on Holy Island. Paul was very helpful when we checked in eventhough he had a queue of people waiting to be served at the bar as we arrived at his busiest time when the causeway is open and it was a lovely sunny day so lots of day trippers on the island. Our check in time was 2pm but Paul told us to go to room 1 even though it was only 12.30pm. We quickly viewed the room, left our bags, and went to explore the beautiful island. The room was quite big with an en suite, a chair and a large comfortable bed, a wardrobe and a set of drawers with tea/ coffee making facilities and biscuits. The room was clean apart from a couple of stains on the chair and carpet but these were livable with. The shower was very nice with lots of soft towels and hot water. The bed was very comfortable with lots of soft pillows. We had our evening meal and breakfast in the Inn, and both meals were very good and there is very nice menu for evening meals. Overall we had a very nice stay and would use again if we returned

We took a friend here for his birthday. It's got a lovely atmosphere and one of my friends really enjoyed the fish and chips. My other friend had the scampi, which was soggy but okay. I had the breaded camembert and, in my opinion, it was over fried. I couldn't reallt get a taste of the cheese at all. Poor choice of wines, although the beer variety was alright. I didn't think the food was worth the price, especially given that only one of us were drinking and I had a starter as a main. I'd give it another chance given the ambience but I mainly refrained from complaining because it was my friend's birthday and I didn't want to taint it.

Friendly and attentive staff when we visited one evening Great fish and chips, with really light and crisp batter. However dessert was vastly overpriced - £7.99 for two really quite small scoops of ice cream. At that price I’d expected 3 scoops minimum, and it did put a bit of a dampener on what was otherwise a nice meal that I’d have like to have given 4* to.

What an AMAZING place! Certainly a step back in time with shipping antiquities on display, wonderful beams and a beautiful stone floor. The atmosphere catches you before anything else. Its so easy to imagine the sailors returning ftom their voyages and singing their sea shantees with a yard of ale! And then ... the food! Well, after having experienced all the other restaurants on the island, this certainly came out top for quality, range of food and value. The food was tasty, colourful, fresh, succulent and well worth what we paid. We had the steak burger, chicken pie, gammon, fish cakes and haddock. All 6 plates were emptied and nothing but compliments paid. If you book to go anywhere on the island for an evening meal, this has to be first choice.

Called over to the stunning Holy Island - Lindisfarne - on an un-planned visit on a cold February afternoon. The Cafe had just closed but that turned out to be a blessing in disguse, as we ended up in the Ship Inn! The pub has great quality food at a very reasonable price, and a warm welcoming atmosphere. Fortunately we had booked a table as we have dogs and needed a poodle friendly place. We were warned that as they are busy they hold tables only for 20 minutes so if we were going to be late to ring in. When we arrived, they were very busy, turning away people, or telling them there was a 40 minute wait for food. We were a bit worried as we didn't have a lot of time, but I think since we were served quickly, there may be a system to prioritise tables who booked over walk ins. However, as we had booked, we were served quickly and the one starter arrived within 10 minutes of ordering. We all had fish and chips as a main and it was very well cooked, good batter, fish not over cooked as often happens. Were too full to have a pudding but had coffee. It is very nice inside and has a big garden at the rear. The staff were very efficient and friendly, despite being very busy. Having read some of the negative reviews, i am a bit at a loss as our experience was of a pub which was doing its best to feed as many customers as possible but being honest about any delays. All the staff were friendly and helpful.

We had walked up to Lindisfarne Castle and we were walking back and saw this pub. We had seen reviews and had little hope we would get in - but as luck would have it - we were slightly later and most people had eaten and were just leaving. We ordered fish and chips. A Scottish couple just finishing their meal advised us to have the small portions - but I was 'starving' and we with another couple so the men had a large serving the girls had small.Well........it was huge. I struggled to finish it, just halving some batter. Without exaggeration, this was the best ever fish and chips I have ever had . We have been to a few speciality fish and chip shop, these were better by miles. It looks and feels like a family business. Friendly staff, courteous and efficient. For the quality of food, best value ever. If you get a chance.....go. If I was not 350 miles away it would be worth making another trip. Well done and thanks.

I am not at all surprised to see some of the comments made by other reviewers about the dreadful attitude taken towards customers of this pub. This place appears to be run and staffed by people who should never be working in hospitality. Their aggressive and unapologetic responses to previous negative reviews only serve to bear this out.We arrived for lunch we had about 1 hour and 10 minutes to eat in, due to the tidal nature of the causeway. We were told, in a brusque manner verging on rudeness, that there was no room in the interior and showed to a depressing and over-crowded patch of garden at the back, overlooked by houses. As we didn't have time to turn around and go elsewhere, we ordered drinks and perused the menu. Upon going to the bar, we waited for a very long time to be served, without even the courtesy of an acknowledgement from the staff. We were then told that half of the items we wanted were off and that there would be at least a 40 minute wait. Having taken so long to get to this point, that would be cutting it too fine for us. Upon enquiring whether we could opt for a sandwich instead, we were told they had finished serving sandwiches five minutes earlier. We drank our drinks and left. The drinks were the most expensive we encountered on this trip. The owners of this pub can, if they wish, berate the customers for not reading the menu or failing to appreciate the problems faced by a busy pub. Likewise, they're perfectly within their rights to impose their rules with po-faced rigidity, arbitrarily limit times when a particular meal can be eaten, charge whatever they like and greet people with begrudging scowls. However, they should remember that customers also have the right to decide which pubs they do or do not frequent and to make recommendations to others. Most of us prefer establishments with staff and management who take pains to provide a pleasant experience to their customers - who are pro-active, polite and helpful. Thankfully, there are many such pubs around and I would urge anyone to pass by The Ship and find one of them.

We were told the food would take around 40 minutes as they were busy but it actually appeared in around 20 minutes. The landlord was a little grumpy but I think that was down to customers trying to order things not on the menu, not being organised, discussing food allergies, etc.The only thing that let the place down was the weeds growing in the beer garden borders. The landlord is clearly not a gardener but could easily improve things by paying a local to spend a few hours tidying things.

When the waiter came, we were then told there was a 90 minute wait for food. Having told the waiter this was unacceptable, and we'd have a drink only, our drinks arrived, shortly followed by the manager to berate us as to why we were unhappy to wait 90 minutes. I understand its the middle of summer, but if the kitchen can't cope with being busy, reservations shouldn't be taken.Poor, very poor

Upon arrival I was asked by someone at the front door if I was buying drinks, to which I replied yes and that we were looking for a table to have lunch also. The employee/owner then changed his tone and told us “we’ve just had 70 people come in here and ask for food and I won’t do it, you can have drinks and that’s it!”Great! We’ve just spent 1 hr on a boat to visit the island and at 12:20 in the afternoon your telling me you’re refusing to serve me food in a building which proudly advertises food being sold? What a great first impression of Holy Island your business and hospitality was!

Great food in a good atmosphere with friendly and polite staff. Awesome scallops, a really sweet and creamy Spanish onion soup and dressed crab to start. Two excellent Sirloin steaks, a fish stew and a delightful slow cooked duck for main. It would have been 5 stars but the peppercorn sauce came out very spicy hot. Not a criticism but should have been tasted and toned down by chef. We will definitely return. Thanks

We booked and ordered in advance which id recommended as it is very popular. The main photo on this site don't do the chips justice, really thick cut and seasoned perfectly. All the food we had excellent and we had quite a variety and it was excellent throughout.

We went in for lunch and the food was incredible. The lamb was tender and very well seasoned, the sea bass delicious, as was the cod. We sat inside and the space was very pleasant. Would highly recommend.

We went during high tide, so most of the crowds were not there. Stopped off at the Ship about 3.00 pm, and ordered food. Had one of the tastiest seafood stews I’ve ever had, really nice. Plus a couple of pints of Hadrian’s Blessed Bitter, which is apparently brewed especially for the pub. Definitely worth visiting at the quiet times. While we were there, reserved signs were going up and everybody was prepping for the influx when the tide drops, so this place must get super busy.

We stayed here at the end of walking St Cuthbert's Way and what a good choice. A beautiful traditional old inn, comfortable room and outstanding food. The best dinner of our entire trip and an excellent breakfast. If you say the night on holy island stay here.

As good an evening meal as I’ve had anywhere in the north east. I’m guessing the chef was Spanish from the influence on the menu. Everything was cooked perfectly and with great flavour. Scallops were spot on (and I’m fussy about them not being over cooked) steak was perfect and juicy, came with an proper peppercorn sauce, not just a cream sauce with some peppercorns thrown in. Catch of the day was sea bass, and again this was cooked to perfection, only wish I’d had a smaller lunch so I could of tried a dessert. Can’t wait to go back. A number of walk ins were surprised to find both sittings fully booked so plan ahead as this was while tide was in and the island is normally quieter too.

Really nice bar / pub - had bar snacks with a couple of ciders in the beer garden with the sun shining - tapas was excellent especially the prawns and chorizo - service from the start to finish was excellent - nice blonde girl from Berwick and young lad as well - could not be faulted and certainly recommend to others - book if you want a evening meal though

We had a superb meal here the food is fresh and well cooked, we had a paella and it was brilliant. The staff are friendly nothing was too much trouble. We visited their beer garden on the afternoon where we had cocktails and local beer. I would thoroughly recommend if you are staying on the island booking is essential.

Best fish and chips we've had in ages. Really large portions. Staff were very nice and attentive even though it was a very busy lunch period. Lovely beer garden. Would definitely recommend.Word of warning for vegetarians: the Beyond burger is not the Beyond Meat burger many are familiar with, but rather a bean based burger. We checked before ordering and are glad we did as would have been disappointed.

Visited The Ship for lunch as a party of four. Two had paiella (which you need to pre order) there was enough to feed the four of us. I had the thick cut ham which was about an inch thick and delicious. My sister had the burger which was large and well cooked. Staff were amazing and service was professional. My wife is a fan of Sticky Toffee pudding and said it was the best she has ever had. Thank you all very much we will be back.

Can not fault the food and the service. Ate here twice whilst staying on the island and both times excellent. Recommend the prawns with chorizo, the scallops, the chicken tenders, the fish stew and the catch of the day. Large portion sizes as well.

It's not often I take a chance on steak in restaurants or pubs, etc but I did in the Ship Inn since the food in Northumbria in general is excellent and I had the best steak since the early 2000's. The rocket salad tasted fresh too. Very accommodating pub in these hard times please give them your business. And the real ale (Lindisfarne and Northumbrian Gold) was a welcome taste after lockdown lager.

Called in for a late lunch, and went for the seafood paella. Despite warnings that it would take a while, it didn't, (and if had it would have been worth the wait.) 0

I wasn’t expecting anything special as it does have a captive audience but I was totally wrong! Really great home cooked food with an extensive creative menu, something for everyone, huge choice. Lovely pub garden, toilets immaculate. And the young man who served us was super helpful. All in all, a totally pleasurable pub lunch, thank you.

Back again- first place we wanted to go to after being locked in for so long. The Ship is an excellent place to stay and we have now been staying there for many years .The owners ,Andrew and Janice , were there to greet us when we arrived - they are not always there but wonderful to see them. Lou and Carlos are now managing The Ship and it was lovely to get to know them a little over our weeks stay. Lou is charming, friendly, efficient and really wants everyone to enjoy their experience. Have always enjoyed the food here but Carlos has added more dishes ( a little Spanish flair) and this is a great addition- loved the sea bass and the crispy kale !! Can’t forget Doni’s ice cream- delicious. Our room was lovely, didn’t want to leave the rocking chairs behind . Although Laura was unable ( because of the pandemic) to service the room she was really helpful and did all she was allowed to do.It was lovely to sit in the pleasant beer garden drinking Holy Island gin ( distilled on site) and see how busy Andy ( distiller) has become - not surprising as the gin is amazing!Siobhan worked in the bar and restaurant and had a lovely way with her. Last but not least there is Paul who looked after us ( and the bar) so well and efficiently. What more can you want, excellent, friendly staff, good food, accommodation- totally recommend The Ship .

Nice place to stop for lunch. We opted for the inside tables and our "Proper fish finger sandwiches" were very tasty. The landlord was a funny bloke, even told someone to get their dog under control and stop yapping and barking. I totally agreed with him.

The food and service was quite disappointing. The 'Beyond burger' was actually just a bean burger for £14 which is a disappointing vegetarian option. Basically just average pub food and slightly overpriced.

I've called in several times this week to have drinks and a meal. A warm welcome, excellent service whilst coping with huge amounts of people, some of which are very demanding and seem to have forgotten that we're all enduring a pandemic. I have patiently waited on each occasion and received a delicious salmon dinner and drinks. I met friends for my birthday whereupon I was presented with the menu and was asked to choose a dessert; my choice arrived, with a candle, and a rendition of "Happy Birthday to You . . . !". My patience and understanding has been rewarded, so I will continue my visits and recommend like minded people to do the same.
