We stayed here over the weekend. We have had food here on previous visits, and it has always been good quality. Add good service, friendly staff, and pub ambience, and it made for a good weekend.

We came to this pub, thinking we were going to have a nice roast dinner. The portions were really small. Two slithers of beef. We even paid for more expensive meat. There was one carrot, one piece of broccoli, one parsnip and a teaspoon of cabbage . The meal was very salty too. Not good for £18 each. We left there feeling very disappointed and still hungry. We didn’t complain as there were other people there about to eat.

We first came to Porlock in 1993 for our honeymoon and visited The Ship, it has been one of our favourite places. We came today, 9th October to get me out of the house as it's the 5 year anniversary of me becoming disabled in a terrible car crash. Delighted to find the pub still carrying the same atmosphere. We used to bring our border collies and sit in the little window nook. We both had baguettes, me the brie, bacon and cranberry. Hubby had the chicken and bacon. Both were excellent and huge! Lovely dressing on the side salad and a generous portion of crisps. I couldn't finish mine. Wonderful to find ginger beer on the menu. Currently living in Devon but moving back to Somerset soon so will be back more often. Planning their excellent value 2 night stay for my birthday. Disabled access from car park a little tricky as it's steps to the bar but I managed on my crutches. All other access is fine, even a disabled loo. Have to remember the age of the pub and accept its ancient features.

We had a fantastic dinner at The Ship Inn. Both of us ordered fish, and it was simply exquisite – fresh, perfectly cooked, and full of flavor. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, with a charming pub vibe that made us feel right at home. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, adding to the overall positive experience. We ended up staying much longer than we originally planned, just enjoying the relaxed ambiance in the pub. Highly recommended for anyone looking for great food and a welcoming environment!

I don’t know what has happened but all I can say is change it back! Having previously had a most delicious meal here in the winter that we raved about to everyone, we decided to go back this summer for an evening meal. I can honestly say that I wish we hadn’t. One meal was greasy, there was a layer of it all on the plate and the other was the most bizarre concoction of flavour-maybe chef thought he was Gordon Ramsey but what an assault on the taste buds. Even the simplest things were messed up-Chips-raw and uncooked on the inside, dry and flavourless. Absolutely inedible. Needless to say, very little was eaten. As we’d ordered dessert already we decided to try our luck, you can’t mess up a cheesecake surely? Oh yes you can!!! Rock hard (not frozen) and bland. A blessing to this place is the wait staff. Their lovely manners and smiles really do the place proud. Unfortunately we shan’t be eating there again.

We had been eagerly looking forward to visiting The Ship Inn, and we were absolutely thrilled with our experience. Despite it being a midweek Wednesday evening, the ambiance was exceptional, with a cozy and inviting atmosphere that made us feel right at home. The staff greeted us warmly and were incredibly accommodating, even towards our 4 little chihuahuas, who thoroughly enjoyed the spacious and well-maintained beer garden. The staff members were not only friendly but also went out of their way to ensure that we had a wonderful time. As we settled in, the tantalizing aroma of the food being served to other patrons only added to our excitement. The extensive selection of ciders and beers presented a delightful challenge for me as I tried to make up my mind about what to indulge in. We left eagerly anticipating our return, as the overall experience had been beyond delightful.

This meal (If you can call it that) was purported to be a large roast dinner. We had bee looking forward to it all fay, but when it came it was much more than disappointing. In fact, it was an absolute disgrace. There were two bacon rasher sized pieces of dry beef, 3 reheated roast potatoes ( they tried to tell us they were freshly cooked, but anyone knows how dry a roasting is when reheated), a dried up parsnip, one broccoli stem, less than a small cabbage leaf, so gelatinous bisto gravy and a huge Yorkshire pudding as if to try and hide the absolute debacle underneath it. To be fair, they did give a full refund without argument.

We had an excellent lunch at The Ship Inn. The food was well-presented and tasty and the portion sizes were more than ample. It was very busy when we arrived but the friendly staff found us a table and our food was served, considering the number of meals being eaten, with the minimum of delay. Very good value for money and can certainly recommend.

What a fabulous old-style real pub and hotel. From start to finish our trip to The Ship Inn in Porlock was wonderful. Fabulous friendly service from each and every member of staff, with particular shout-outs to Beth and Tom. We shared a small cosy room - and given the price it was amazing value for money. The food is decent too. It's also wonderfully dog-friendly. If you're in the area, it's a 'must visit'.

We stayed here in the Ships Mews as we wanted to revisit Porlock and the Weir. Neither disappointed. The accommodation was lovely, very clean and bright. It had all you needed, we didn’t cook but you could have. The staff in the pub were always friendly and helpful, even when busy. There was plenty of choice for gluten free food. Porlock is quaint with a good choice of independent shops and interesting places nearby. A good few days all round.

Your approach to this establishment engenders a move to times past. An old worldly charm but with a busy look. Entry gives you a sense of a drinking pub but with food. Oh boy, the food. Since lockdown our meals out have been very average, short staffed places were the service and the quality of the food has suffered. Worry not if you visit the Ship. The staff could not have been more helpful, our table was ready, drinks order in a flash, ready to go. I’d mulled over the menu choice of Chicken Supreme online, was this going to be similar to my Army Compo rations of the 1970’s? No way, this was an outstanding meal, I can’t praise it highly enough, my partner has Hake, another quality meal. Needless to say, with one more night left tomorrow, we’re going back. Give this place a try, you won’t be disappointed I’m sure, if you are, tell them, they really do care.

A nice warm welcome, most of the staff were bright, friendly and willing, drink and food order taken promptly. We ordered the Sunday Roast,I had the beef, my wife Chicken Supreme, both excellent, well cooked, good quality, hot, followed by Chocolate Cheese cake and a Cheeseboard,my wife found the Cheese Cake to be tasty but,the Cheese Cake part to be too firm, the Cheese Board was great and dare I say it, over generous, easily enough for two! Our only negative was the slap dash lack of attention to the little things, having to ask for cutlery, having to ask for horse radish when we heard other waitresses asking if this was wanted at the order stage, having to ask for a side plate and a knife for the Cheese Board getting the wrong dessert, two cheese cakes turned up,spilling my beer. All minor but, detracted from the overall experience a little in fact the sister pub at Porlock Weir could teach the Ship Inn Porlock a thing or two about attention to detail because they are absolutely brilliant as is the pub!

Came for Sunday lunch. I had the beef, my wife the nut roast. Sadly, every element on the plate was over cooked, tough to cut, and just a chore to get through. Nothing was succulent, fresh, or tasty. The beef was super chewy, the roasters were dry, reheated lumps. The nut roast was, weird, paste-like in the middle dry around the outside. This was minimal effort, low-standard fare. The staff were fine. But don't come here for the food.

Chose this pub as staying in the area and had generally good reviews. Celebrating my husbands birthday so chose the rump steak, the most expensive thing on the menu. Very chewy so much so my husband did not finish his ( very unusual for him) and I had several chewed pieces on the side of my plate. No response when I said that it was very chewy other than to say they would watch the meat coming in! Shiraz good though! Would not go back even though here for several days.

We had dinner at the Ship Inn on two nights during our stay at Bossington. The pub allows dogs which was great. The staff were friendly and quick and the food was brilliant. On our first night we had fish and chips and pheasant breast, with a side of onion rings. The fish and chips were really good and the onion rings were especially crispy! Unfortunately the pheasant breast was surpsingly small and tough. The second night we had the hake and chicken supreme - these dishes were brilliant, no negatives about it! Overall we had a very pleasant visit and we will definitely come again. This is a characterful Inn (known locally as The Top Ship) with a fascinating history and location at the foot of the famous 1 in 4 Porlock Hill. Pity the kitchen doesn't live up to this, then, with its child-size potions at adult prices. My £6.95 "Bakewell Tart" was a 3x3x2.5" triangle of chewy patry with a quarter inch topping of beige stodge. Roughly £3.50 per mouthful. Waitress apologetic, but chef unrepentant.

It was well presented and hot and a decent sized portion. We noticed on the way out that they were advertising rooms at £175 for 2 nights B&B which would seem a good deal......perhaps one day!

We have been coming to Porlock for over 30 years sometimes 2 or 3 times and have stayed at the ship several times in the past. The ship is our go to pub for our meals. We have always been satisfied with good quality food and when we have stayed we have received a lovely hearty breakfast! So what went wrong last night. The service and ambience of the pub was the same as usual and was expecting the same for our meals. Not so I ordered the pork steak which turn out to be a pork chop. I wouldn’t have ordered had I known as by the time the bone and fat is taken away you are left with 2 bits of meat. It was accompanied by one scoop of mash and 2 small tough kale leaves. The other meals were sea bass which my husband always has when it’s on the menu here. The difference this time beautifully presented on a large plate with a portion that looked like a starter. The other meal lamb which was the same. I know the cost of living has gone up but a few extra vegetables would add pennies to a meal. We always spend well over£60 with drinks and in the past left satisfied. But not this time we all left hungry and went back to our cottage for food. Fortunately we haven’t booked another night so will be going else where. Come on Ship I hope you take this on board otherwise you will loose business and we will miss you.

Often pubs quality drops when they are full. Not here . The service was outstanding and food really good in all aspects. So in summary lovely varied menu, well cooked, timely and friendly service. Finally really nice range of beers. All at very fair pricing.Highly recommended. Given its popularity reservation recommended.

Never been to Porlock before so parked up and had a wander. Came across The Ship and went and had morning coffee. Lovely patio garden and great sitting in the sunshine. We decided to return for lunch after we had been along to Porlock Weir. The pub there was also called The Ship and I believe serves the same meals. As it was very busy we came back to this one. My husband had Rump Steak and I had Chicken and Bacon Caesar Salad. Both meals were delicious and staff so friendly. Good Covid practices too. Well done, would certainly recommend.

The restaurant was recommended by the owner of the property we were renting. I booked lunch and as it was a Sunday we had Sunday lunch. I opted for beef and I needed gluten free. The meal came with 2 roast potatoes on the plate and some very dry and unappetising beef. When looking at the other beef meals, I had significantly less beef and what appeared to be the left overs. I queried this with a waiter who took it away and came back with an e tea slice an£ to,d me the beef had been cooked for 3 hours. The meat was dry, grey in colour and no improvement . My husbands Yorkshire pudding looked like a pancake and his meat was equally dry. The side vegetables included over peppered parsnip and carrots that tasted of aniseed. I eventually asked for my meal to be removed. A very very disappointing experience......it felt like as the last booking of the lunch period we got left overs and certainly seemed to be an over boiled, boil in the bag. They did remove the cost of my meal without any query.

Had a family meal here and I must say the food was delicious. I had the lamb chops and minted mash, they cooked the lamb exactly how I wanted it snd was scrumptious! My husband had the meatballs and he said they were better than most Italian restaurants he had eaten in. My children had the burger and chips and sausage and mash which they were very happy with too and all portions were good sized. The staff were very attentive and even though the food took a while because the pub was fully booked (50% eat out to help out) they made sure we had drinks also made conversation when they could. They were very apologetic about the wait. I must say it was well worthy the wait. :-) Will definitely return before going home.

Went to this pub after a walk. They have a playground perfect for kids to run around. The food was lovely with different vegan options available (unfortunately non for the kids menu). The staff was very friendly. I would recommend stopping there!

A lovely pub just at the bottom of Porlock hill. Snug bar, bar lounge, restaurant area and fairly extensive outdoor terraces. Serves a fine variety of ales (Exmoor, St Austell brewery and Otter were on during my visit). All very well kept. Food also very good - we had crab, mussels to start with and lamb shanks and burgers for main courses. Reasonably priced and decent quality. Staff very friendly and helpful. The pub has a lovely atmosphere and I very much hope to go back again!

Lovely country village pub. We ate on Saturday evening, on our first day in Somerset. We enjoyed our meal so much we booked to come again later in the week. We had a starter and a main each but didn’t have room for dessert. We plan on having a dessert on our next visit Staff were seemed to genuinely enjoy their jobs and made us feel very at home. We both ate from the specials menu, but there was more than enough varied choice on the main menu also.

We booked in advance and the staff were courteous, really professional, as this was the first time we had ventured out during our week in Somerset, and were unsure of what to expect. The staff were brilliant, the roast dinners were very popular, the service was attentive too. The tables were sensibly distanced, and there was clear signage for entry and exit via different routes. The food was well presented and good value. Staff worked very hard to keep customers served, and did a fantastic job.

Squeezed us in as it was full :) super food, super service and family run. Felt safe and well organised. Beer was super too and they even gave me a local brewery glass to take home :) well worth a visit. No parking but a short walk from the park park ( 2 mins max)

Lovely pub. Came for a meal with a large party. Booked a few days ahead. Glad we did! It was busier than we thought it would be, but the pub are really good at sticking to the Covid rules and regs, one way systems in place etc. Plenty of outdoor seating and a childrens play area/slide. We all enjoyed our food which came with no issues, nice and hot and all tweaks we requested were done. Polite, friendly staff, sea views outside and good food. Thoroughly recommend but also recommend booking! Thanks for a lovely evening.

We stayed next door self catering for a week. Ate here three times and this was because it was very good food at reasonable prices. We didn’t bother to try elsewhere. Options to eat outside but we chose the restaurant. Recommend booking as it was busy.

Stayed in Porlock for a week and ate here a couple of times as well as just having a drink in the garden after walking. The garden terrace is very nice and the food good. Staff are very friendly and they’re right on top of the sanitising. Good selection of ale and all in all somewhere I’d be happy to recommend and return to.

The Ship Inn is a beautiful old inn located at the end of Porlock's high Street. The large, multi-level beer garden is perfect for some space and fresh air in the current climate, is festooned with plants and flowers, and has picturesque views over the thatched roof and out to sea.The staff are welcoming and attentive and the food and service great (really enjoyed the duck). The beer selection is good too, especially the Otter.Despite not advertising it, they do great breakfasts too!

Considering the pub has just reopened after lockdown COVID-19, everything was spot on. The staff all wore masks, plenty of hand sanitiser stations around the pub, constant cleaning of the tables inside and out, felt reassured. The staff were very friendly and professional especially Ringo who always looked after us even if we just popped in for a drink. We stayed in the village on holiday and ate in here a couple of times and had fantastic meals. Great real ales especially the proper job. Good luck for the season

A very good dog friendly pub with rooms. Rooms clean, food brilliant, friendly staff and dogs allowed everywhere. Only thing that could be improved is the guest entrance to the hotel, very tired and need of updating. Otherwise a brilliant stay!

What a fabulous lunch. There were eight of us who ordered a variety of sandwiches, toasties and cream teas. Food was excellent and great value for money. Service was quick and friendly. People have written reviews complaining about the decor which is actually very tastefully done. Besides, with such great food in a beautiful setting why worry about the decor!
