Great Hotel, really hospitable, great food. Will be back

A huge thank you to Chris and Sarah and the staff for the warm and friendly hospitality. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was outstanding!

Really lovely place, friendly, amazing food in the bar. Our room was a great size with dual aspect onto the park and over the village. Comfy bed, and so peaceful. Only lost 1 star as the bathroom needed a little updating...BUT huge bath tub and we really enjoyed our stay.

Stopped off on our way through Exmoor, been past this pub a million times and always wanted to try it, what a georgeous pub, it was a cold dark night, roaring fires, super friendly, fantastic food, delightful memorable visit.

Overnight stay in a classic double room overlooking the village centre. Comfortable, clean and very welcoming. Enjoyed drinks and dinner in the bar which was busy with a good atmosphere, Great service which extended through to an equally excellent breakfast the following morning. We slept really well. This would be a great base to explore Exmoor, very central with other options within either walking distance or a short drive. In the summer months it would be lovely to sit outside but given the weather we were very happy in the guest lounge with its fire and comfy seats. Plumbing / water pressure was disappointing. Not strong enough to really drive the shower but our room had a bath so no big deal.

Staff are lovely and couldn’t do enough for us. We had a nice size room, but it was dusty and had cobwebs hanging from the ceiling. Also it needed updating and redecorating. Breakfast was good evening meal was ok.

We spent a week here with friends who had dogs. The stay was a great getaway and restful. Staff, food, and location were excellent. Although the hotel and rooms were clean and tidy, it is starting to need some TLC and a regular whip round with a feather duster on a long pole, to reach the spiders webs up high and to give the Stags antlers a Polish!! Other than that, it was a great place to stay. Thank you. The Crown and all the lovely staff.

So comfortable, quiet, clean, and welcoming, I highly recommend this place to anyone visiting the region. Genuinely the best night's sleep I have ever had in a hotel. 10/10

wij verbleven drie nachten in dit hotel en hebben daar ook drie keer een avond maaltijd gebruikt. het eten was heerlijk en alles vers bereid. ook het ontbijt was zeer goed verzorgd en en niet de gebruikelijke buffet, maar maar kiezen van de menukaart . hulde aan de chef !

Really delicious supper all round. Kids loved their chicken burger and we enjoyed the soufflé, onion bhajis, and chicken tikka masala curry. Great atmosphere and lovely staff.

We really liked staying here in such a nice village. The room was a good size and clean: We liked the furniture in the room. Breakfast was also good. We booked an evening meal and the food was very good quality. The one thing that would have made our visit even better would be servicing the rooms: replenishing tea/coffee/toilet paper rather than us having to ask. It was quiet in the evening so we could relax after a long day exploring the local area. We enjoyed watching village life going on from our front facing window. There is off-road parking too which was very helpful.

Up from S Devon for a joint birthday celebration booked via Booking.com by my Wife. Gorgeous village, hotel & staff. Classic rural country hotel vibe. If you dislike country pursuit references look elsewhere. Locals friendly, lovely atmosphere in the Bar Saturday night where we ate. Went for the local ale and a rose and the beef pie, quite superb. Lovely room with good WiFi complimented by a excellent Sunday morning breakfast. We loved it, long may you prosper. Our country immeasurably improved by these lovely businesses. Recommended.

I stayed 2 nights in this hotel. The room was damp and there was mould everywhere. It smelt horrible. At the time of writing this review it’s been 2 days since I checked out and all the clean clothes in my luggage still stink of the damp and mould from that room.

I really wanted to like this hotel. Exmoor was such a magical place and the Crown Hotel in Exford was conveniently located. I booked a three-might stay one month in advance directly with the hotel. At the time of booking there were still lots of room available. I chose the double ensuite with king-sized bed. Upon check-in I was given Room 18, which was through 2 fire doors at the very end of a very long and twisted corridor. The room was significantly lower than all the other rooms on the same floor. As soon as I opened the door there was a stench of damp and mildew. The room was dark as at no time during the day it received direct sunlight. The window overlooked onto the end of the car park where 4 bins and a giant gas tank were located. The room was clearly suffering from serious damp problems - peeling wallpapers, damp spots and mildew everywhere I looked. And have I mentioned the stench yet? It’s such a shame that they thought it was acceptable to put a bed in that horrible room and charge people money for it.

We had a wonderful stay at The Crown. We used it as a base for a walking trip away. We brought our dog who was made to feel very welcome as were we! We very much enjoyed our breakfast, lots of choice and the evening meal was delicious too. The village is also great for shorter dog walks with open fields very close by. Thanks to the staff, you do a fantastic job and look after your visitors extremely well.

Lovely location, very good staff and excellent food. Some of the best cooked meals we've had out for quite a while. Stayed 2 nights, initially only booked for dinner the first night as we like to try a variety of venues. However, first night was excellent so thought why go elsewhere. I'd go back there just for the grub.

Great meet up place, met friends there, they stayed in the hotel and I took my campervan and stayed in the car park. Super friendly, helpful staff. Rooms were lovely and clean. Great food and selection of drinks at the bar and not over priced. Quiet overnight in the car park. Very dog friendly. Great walks from there too. Highly recommend

Popped in for dinner on Sunday evening and had a lovely meal. We had a range of different options and each one looked and tasted great. The Chocolate Delice for dessert was especially lovely, and we loved the idea of the mini milkshake it comes with.

Dog friendly, good but slightly pretentious food. Ideally placed in the village overlooking the village green.

Stayed here for a few days and were very impressed by the friendly staff, lovely rooms and great food and drinks. We had 3 breakfasts and 3 evening meals and they were all excellent.

8 of us had dinner one Saturday night in February. We had pre-booked a table, which was wise as it was absolutely packed. The staff were friendly and welcoming, providing an excellent service. In our couple, we shared an onion bhaji starter, followed by sea bream, ribs, ice cream, and a panacotta. With drinks, the bill was £76. The food was superb and certainly worth every penny. Well-behaved dogs on short leads are permitted. There's a free car park adjacent to the pub and on street parking if required. In warmer weather, there are a few tables at the front of the pub overlooking the village green. It's a superb place to visit.

We have just returned from a couple of days exploring Exmoor and stayed at The Crown Inn Exford with our dogs. We had a warm and friendly welcome, our evening meal and breakfast was amazing. We will definitely be returning next year.

This was my second visit this year. Unfortunately three nights were cut down to one, because of work. I had my same room which was up to their excellent standard. This time I had dinner. The menu choice was very good and the food the best I have had for many a year. Very attentive service. In the morning I had the full English which was a very good start to the day. I am trying to arrange another visit this year. It would be very difficult to find anywhere to better The Crown.

Stayed three nights and ate in every night. Good food and beer. Staff friendly and helpful. Nice cooked breakfast.

Another excellent meal at The Crown in Exford. The legendary Exmoor pie and sticky toffee pudding is not to be missed. We always visit when we are staying in Exford, and it never disappoints. Thank you to all the chefs and staff for always looking after us.

Pan roasted chicken breast with confit of leek & smoked bacon, seasonal veg., dauphinois potatoes, & lemon & thyme sauce- OMG!!! I’ve died and gone to heaven. I chose this dish on Thursday and came back Sunday for the same dish!! Chicken was so moist, and the sauce had a beautiful lemon tang that complemented the entire meal. The veg. Was perfect try cooked and the leek and bacon confit was an excellent addition. I had extra potatoes as they were so delicious!!!

We were pleasantly surprised by this place.Lovely pub food and very friendly staff.If staying in Exford again we wouldn’t hesitate to return.

The welcome we received was poor despite there being very few customers . We had roast meals but the beef was basically raw and had hardly seen the oven, cost of electric??!! The vegetables were not that tasty, and the Yorkshire puddings were definitely not recently cooked and were cold. Altogether a disappointing meal for a top heavy price! Wish we’d gone to the white horse in the village who were busy, I wonder why !

The Crown is a real jewel. The building itself is very interesting and as soon as you enter you know you are on to a winner. Excellent decor, bright and airey. The staff are most helpful and polite. My room was very well furnished and spotless with a good sized bathroom. The menu and food were very good, with refreshing changes to the norm - something to whet the appetite. A good sized bar, well patronised by the villagers which is always good to see. I can't recommend The Crown highly enough. I will certainly return.

what a great place to stay in exmoor. Really comfortable and welcoming. Good food both at dinner and breakfast, lovely rooms and lovely little gift shop . we would recommend it to anyone who likes good traditional friendliness and service

Its been a long time since ive been so disappointed on the value the quality and the portion size of a meal the crown in exford really managed to hit all 3 of these ! We were a large table of 12 heads and the feeling was mutual across the table some really pitiful portions the size of the dauphinois with the lamb dish was just laughable the steaks were dry and the pie was small and not to the standard a really disappointing pub meal!

We had two lovely meals at the Crown while staying in a holiday cottage in Exford. On both occasions the food was excellent and the service and welcome exemplary. Would definitely go back again if we are in the area again.

I stayed at the Crown for 3 nights as I wanted somewhere central to visit places on Exmoor. I had my dog with me. Parking is easy and off road. The staff were very friendly and helpful and made myself and Lola very welcome. The room was clean and comfortable, no frills but had what was necessary. Breakfasts were fabulous. The hotel’s location provides an excellent base for visiting Exmoor’s various attractions. Nice walks direct from the hotel which is good if travelling with dogs.

Lovely pub in the heart of the village. Friendly welcome at a well-stocked bar, then our meals, which were way, way above average for pub-served meals. Menu offered wide choices, and our meals were of the highest quality, freshly cooked and superbly presented. Service and value for money could not have been better.

We had a midweek dinner. We ordered asparagus starter and were frankly disappointed . Only 4 stalks and not well cooked Main course of sole was also disappointing. Not that fresh . Fish and chips was small compared with others . The lamb was good....

Stayed here for 2 nights. Good choice for breakfast and an excellent range of high quality food in the friendly pub, a hub for locals too with a really great atmosphere.

Booked a table for 2 Christmas Eve . 3 courses Onion Bahais to start followed by I had the lamb which was delicious and other half had crown burger Finally a cheese board All completely perfect and delicious. Local ale and G&T Highly recommended eatery....

We really enjoyed our evening here on my birthday. Gluten free food was clearly marked on the menu and there was a good choice for starters, mains and desserts. The staff members were friendly and helpful and the restaurant was cosy and welcoming.

Well there is one word I can describe The Crown Hotel SUPBERB. The hotel was lovely in a beautiful setting, food fantastic breakfast and evening meal and the staff so nice. Will definitely be back next year.

Sunny weather meant a busy night for the Crown, but despite the number of guests the staff were warm and friendly, the food very good (especially the steak)- we would definitely return.

Whenever I visit Exford I always go to The Crown for my first night's supper, usually their excellent twice baked cheese souffle followed by fish and chips, accompanied by a local gin and tonic and a glass of wine. Very welcoming, well worth a visit.

The food was incredible and the service friendly. Our little dog was welcomed in the bar area. Lots of interesting local artwork on the walls and a good atmosphere - not too empty, not too full.

We called in on the way back from a huge walk for a cold refreshment or 3. A well stocked bar and chirpy Kiwi Barman who we had some good craic with!

My wife and I visited here for the first time and were delighted. There was a friendly welcome for our dog, the food was of a really good standard and the room comfortable - despite being the hottest night of the year! We'd be delighted to go again.

We were welcomed and immediately given a table even though we hadn’t booked. The fish and chips and chicken supreme were delicious. Vegetables were well cooked. Service was very good.

Visited The Crown on a Thursday at around 7.15pm for drinks and dinner after having read good reviews. The pub was quiet although the few customers there were crowded at the bar and didn’t seem overly keen to make way for others! The bar staff were good however and we were served quickly. The menu was on the pricey side for bar food so expectations were high. Unfortunately the portion sizes were not generous and whilst the food was nicely presented, even my 12year old son left feeling hungry after an adult serving of sea bass. The chicken was well cooked but the mushroom sauce tasted as though it was from a packet and not what one would hope for when spending nearly £18 on a main. Worse than the food however was the vile language being used by the locals at the bar. I appreciate that pubs can get a little relaxed as far as language is concerned but I’d have expected a little consideration in this regard as we were clearly there with young children. Whilst this is not directly the fault of The Crown, the sign at the bar, asking customers to refrain from using offensive language was neither heeded or enforced.

My walking group of 20 had Sunday lunch here last April and were keen to come back again this year.

Had gehoopt op iets meer fantasie met vegetarische gerechten, vervolgens toch heel lekker gegeten: smaakvolle salade vooraf, hoofdgerecht vis met kappers en zeekraal en lekkere kazen toe. Ik vind dat alles hier klopt. Supervriendelijke ontvangst en bediening, verrassend lekker eten, mooie en fijne ambiance, goede wijn, goede prijs/kwaliteit. Ik heb geen enkele reden voor minder dan vijf bollen.

We were passing the area and decided to go in, the food was good but not excellent. The burger was a decent size and very tasty, however the pie was a rather small slice of pie and not many chips but overall the quality of the food was very good.

We both ate and drank at this dog friendly pub while staying in Exford. Atmosphere good and food, pib fare, very good.

Thank you once again to the staff and chefs at The Crown for another fabulous meal. We stay in Exford twice a year and always visit The Crown for a meal. We have never been disappointed and the menu is always evolving with new and delicious choices. We opted for the Sunday roast this time and our daughter had the slow cooked shoulder of lamb. All beautifully presented and piping hot. The legendary sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream was a winner and the new chocolate Delice on the menu was divine. We have always thought of this as a good place for lunch however on our last visit for Friday lunch the food was dreadful. Soggy chips, dried out duck - both meals really not their usual standard. Can no longer recommend it.

Second visit to this country pub. High quality food with friendly good service. Whilst not a large pub it gives a good buzz. The fire with a pint of Exmoor ale is a good place to end the evening.

We stayed at Exmoor Lodge B&B; and on our second day decided to try the other end of the village for our dinner after tasting the delights of the White Horse Inn the night before. The meal was substantial but spoilt by the pie. My wife had the Plaice and Veg and I the Steak Pie and Veg. Reasonably priced pub grub.

We called at this pub as we were staying at the Exford house hotel,and it was recommended to us for good food ,when we arrived we were asked if had booked ,but we hadn't as we had not long arrived at the hotel ,but they managed to fit us in ,they also accommodate well Behaved dogs ,my husband ordered the steak and all trimmings which was melt in the mouth,

Visited last week with friends, all opting for different dishes and all thoroughly enjoyed. I had the confit of duck with dauphinois potatoes from the special board, it was a great meal with roast carrots, amazing jus and the potato worked excellently with the duck. Service was good, the Bar area is exactly how a pub should look, with classic not pretentious decor, there is hunting paraphernalia, as you would expect in the heart of hunting country, would heartily recommend.

We went to the crown with our greyhound and our friends Jack russell. Staff on duty were really pleasant and friendly, and the food was excellent. Hubbie had two pints of Exmoor Gold, which he really enjoyed. Would thoroughly recommend, and will definitely go back again.

Wir haben während unseres Aufenthalts in Exford 2 mal im Crown abends gegessen und waren total begeistert. Wir haben im Pub gesessen, welcher total gemütlich, urig und typisch englisch ist. Hunde sind absolut willkommen (wie überall in Exford) und das Essen hat unsere Erwartungen bei weitem übertroffen. Frische, regionale Zutaten und für jeden Geschmack etwas auf der Karte. Es gibt „ einfachere“ Gerichte wie z. B. Cheeseburger (sehr lecker), aber auch raffiniertere ausgefallene , die wir dort nicht erwartet haben. Die Bedienung und der Chef sind super freundlichen, zuvorkommend und nett. Wir haben Essen und Aufenthalt im Crown sehr genossen. Das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis ist sehr gut.

It's a rural pub, full of local characters and their dogs. Don't expect fine tables and furniture but don't let the bar area fool you either, the food is restaurant quality

Stayed here for the night recently in a King room which was spacious and fitted out with everything you need. The food is exceptional and reasonably priced for the quality. If you are staying over, the breakfast does not disappoint either! The staff were all lovely and friendly, love that the hotel and bar are dog friendly too. All in all it was a lovely relaxing weekend with great food and service!
