Great welcome from the hosts, who gave great advice on things to do and see in the area. We had a lovely 1 night stay at the Notley Arms. Lovely clean and comfy room. Great evening meal and breakfast in the pub which had a great atmosphere. We would stay here again.

Four of us visited the Notley for dinner a few weeks ago on a Saturday evening. We have eaten there a few times before with mixed results, but hadn’t been for a couple of years. Very limited menu - no fish option. Chicken main very salty. Burger was a very dense tasteless patty, sadly the only flavour came from the slice of cheese. Two of the party had lamb shanks which were over cooked, once again with very little flavour - we even wondered whether they had been bought in pre-cooked. Restaurant was half empty on a Saturday night, which speaks volumes. Simon the owner was cooking - they need a good chef, using quality ingredients. Having lived in the area for the last 10 years, we have found a number of excellent pubs, many for which you need to book well in advance. Sadly, this is not one of them.

We stayed at the Notley Arms nestled on the edge of Exmoor on our way to Cornwall (breaking our journey). We weren't sure what to expect, as it's fairly isolated by British standards. We certainly weren't disappointed in any way and this is a real gem of a pub which exudes the personalities of the owners at every turn. The Inn has an adjacent coaching garage that has been turned into accommodation. Given the constraints of the building, this has been done sympathetically producing warm, comfortable and functional rooms with en suite bathroom. We were staying for one night and had most of what we needed for the stay. The only area for improvement (and that's slight) related to our room (far right bottom floor). The desk was a bit wobbly so I chose not to use it as a desk and the power points weren't ideally placed for the room - but that's largely a function of the original building. Either a small fridge (hotel or camping) would have been useful under that desk - there is room - or some milk for the teas and coffees in the room. But that's the extent of any missed opportunities. For a couple of days no issues at all. Now for the positives - and there are miriad. The pub has quaint, even chocolate box appeal, but that can often hide a sterile or less welcoming interior. In this case, you have nothing to worry about. The Notley Arms is somewhere Falstaff could be found by the fire. Rumpole of the Bailey might well have retired to the village and feel very much at home in the welcoming atmosphere - absolutely no Chateau Thames Embankment here though. The restaurant has a great menu and will give most gastropubs a run for their money any day of the week. The wine list is equally varied and has some really atypical finds. I particularly liked the Hahn Californian Pinot Noir which I challenge you to find as reasonably priced this side of the Atlantic. The owners are welcoming, friendly, know the area very well and take an interest in all their guests (based on my experience). The pub is great for walkers, ramblers and has good parking - so great if like us you're breaking a journey. All in all, the Notley Arms is somewhere I'm sure would improve most days and long may it continue.

Greeted by Simon, what a nice chap, friendly, accommodating, made recommendations with a crib sheet of where to go sight seeing. Food was superb, we had Sunday dinner, roast beef with all the trimmings and lamb shank, roast potatoes, plenty of veg and Yorkie pud’s. Excellent food the dessert was scrumptious treacle tart and custard, home made nicest I’ve ever tasted. It was so good we went back again as a treat on the last night of our holiday. Same excellent service and food I cannot recommend this highly enough. Thank you to Simon and his staff.

We went to the Notley Arms on a recommendation. The landlord was very friendly and welcoming and encouraged us to have a look at the church next door while we were waiting for our meal. The pub is very atmospheric and we imagine that it must be wonderful at Christmas. Our food was good and the service was very efficient. Our only criticism would be that the menu could be more extensive, but we would be happy to visit again when next in the area.

Lovely location in village with fab walk, uphill behind pub, fantastic views from the top. Quirky pub with lovely food & great hosts. The only reason I gave 4* for the room was that we were downstairs in the Coach house, so a tad dark because we had trees outside the window, but nothing wrong with the actual room at all . Tea/coffee, lovely big cups. Ensuite.

We arrived lateish for Sunday lunch with 2 adults and 2 children and were welcomed with open arms. 2 adults and one child had a beef roast and they were generous portions especially for the child. The other child had beetroot wellington (the vegetarian option). It was all delicious and the desserts were amazing. Throughly recommended. (Yes it was down a bunch of little lanes but it’s rural Somerset, what do you expect?)

What can I say about this amazing place? Used Notley arms as a pit stop on our way to st Ives and was greeted with open arms after our 5 hour drive. Ask the owner where can I watch the England match and he put it on the tv for me on a table opposite. Wife eventually joined me for a lovely dinner while watching England win the match. We had our dog with us and he was just as welcome as we was. Next morning we had a lovely breakfast and was told about a local attraction Tarr steps which we visited on our way to st Ives and once down here we took on board the knowledge of the owners to make our visit to st Ives even more special. Will definitely visit again for our annual trip to Cornwall. Thank you guys

Superb country hotel, bar and restaurant run by the kindest lady in the business, Caroline, a great host with a great sense of humour. Definitely recommended. Will come again. Excellent food, room, atmosphere, setting and plenty of kindness. I read the neg reviews below and saw none of that. We were 22 Enduro bikers for an evening meal, all served together & it was flawless. Breakfast was the same. The hotel has 8 rooms and they are not a late night bar, they focus on closing the bar around 10 so the guests get a good sleep & the same staff were right in point at 745 or so with breakfast service.

Booked a couple of nights stay at the Notley Arms for myself and my mother in order to take part in the Honda Dave Thorpe enduro day over Exmoor. Beautiful and quiet location situated in Monksilver village. Simon & Caroline are fantastic hosts and made us both feel very welcome. The rooms are tastefully decorated, spotlessly clean, warm and comfortable. My room was a little on the small side, but perfectly adequate for what I wanted. The restaurant and bar area have an eclectic decorative style making it very interesting to look round. I found the food to be absolutely delicious, proper homemade food, decent portions, locally sourced produce, cooked and seasoned well at the right price point. All in all we felt very well looked after and wouldn’t hesitate in staying there again in order to explore the local area. Thank you for a wonderful stay 😊👍

The couple who own the place are informative and approachable. They know a lot about the local area too, if you're stuck. The hotel is in a really very remote location, the roads leading to it are narrow and have to be driven with caution. The welcome we received was very friendly indeed and the check in procedure was very efficient. We were shown to our room in a converted coach house, across the car park, we were in room #3. There was a window in the room, but it was quite high, I am over 6 feet tall and could not see out to the car park which was next to our room. We noticed many marks on the walls, but after a long drive, just wanted to get a drink and a meal. We went into the bar and ordered a couple of drinks which we thought we would have in the beer garden, as it was a very warm day. I think the best way I can describe the garden was ramshackle, there were large tears in the parasols, junk strewn around at the back of the garden, the grass was at least ankle deep, quite a few cigarette stubs were discarded by the table nearest the entrance, I didn’t notice if there were any ashtrays at all and the threshold leading into the bar/ restaurant was caked in mud, from the marks, I assume from the paws of the dogs. I appreciate it is a dog friendly establishment but I am not too keen seeing dogs entering in a muddy state and then sitting by the tables being fed by their owners. I suppose the state of the garden should have prepared me for what we were about to discover in room #3. Once back in the room we looked at the en-suite, it was minuscule and not very well installed, to be blunt, it was a total bodge job, poor finish and very poor sealing. This meant there were gaps and crevices which had accumulated dirt and mould, the grout on the floor tiles was very dirty, shown up by a little of it still being clean. There were huge cobwebs hanging down in the en-suite, some still had their makers hanging in them. I had to have a shower because it had been a long drive, but my wife totally refused to use that facility, given the fact it was not clean. Also one of the towels was stained when we opened it out. We went for a meal in the restaurant, there is nowhere else anywhere near, having read the reviews and seen the menu on the website it looked appealing, another mistake. We had a table for two, adjacent to an alcove which I assume had once been a fireplace but now had another table placed into it, once more there were cobwebs down the side of the wall. The menu only had 3 hot starters on it and we were politely informed that they had sold out of calamari. This left Soup or a Camembert for sharing, so we ordered the home baked bread. It took 45 minutes for the bread to arrive and when it did there were 4 very thin slices. The main I had was liver and bacon which was cooked well, my wife had the hake and courgette spaghetti, which was swimming in a sauce Veronique, which tasted as if it was only cream. I had seen the menu on the website which had a cheeseboard for £8, this evenings menu it was £15, quite misleading. Back in the room, the walls are very thin, we heard a dog barking and were then disturbed by somebody coming into the coach house at about 1 am. Breakfast on the Sunday morning was from 8am -9 am, we arrived back in the restaurant at about 8:15 and were asked to sit at any table for two. The owner came over and asked if we wanted tea or coffee, which we ordered, he then said “I’ll get your breakfasts”. No choice of eggs, in fact just take it or leave it. In fairness the quality of the produce was very good, but I would have liked poached rather than fried eggs. When we returned to the coach house to collect our luggage there was mud all over the entrance, I assume from a dog walker who had returned, there was no facility for this to be cleaned, just a mop would have done. You have to check out by 10am, I was very pleased to be leaving by 9:15.

I was welcomed by Simon, who clearly loves what he does, they are both people’s people. The interior is beautifully styled, I could have stayed for a week. To eat I had a ribeye steak cooked to perfect by Bryony, the best steak and chips I’ve had in years, why do so many pubs get it wrong? Bryony is also a fountain of local knowledge, with lots of tips on great hidden places to walk and visit. I came for the weekend on my motorbike and was made to feel at home. Not what it used to be! Pretty tasteless food. I've been here three or four times over the past 3-4 years. The first two visits a few years ago the most recent was last night. Personally, I thought it was a real let down and over priced. Service was okay, nothing out of the ordinary. Speed of service was acceptable but the food was a real let down. I had Brixham scallops starter which we're cold and tasteless, my son had pigeon which was nice but the accompanying bits were pretty tasteless. My wife had hake for main which was cold and the veg which came with it resembled a few stir fry veg yoy could do at home. My youngest son had a horseradish burger which we were worried might mot be to his taste (he's 8 and fairly fussy), we shouldn't have worried as non of us could taste any flavour of horseradish. I had venison main which I wouldn't rate higher than a 5 out of 10. It's a massive shame that it was such a let down as I've always said positive things about this restaurant. It could possibly pass off as okay, but when your charged over 35 for a main course it needs to be better. We weren't the only ones who had issues with cold food as other returned there's also. Unfortunately the icing on the cake was a forced 10% service charge! £180 for four people.

The room was really nice, the bed was not to my liking, But everything else was awesome with the room.. The service during the day and night was hit and miss. Wasn't to welcoming, but friendly enough... But on the other hand the morning service was second none. Could not of don't enough, made up for the service yesterday. The food is good but lacked attention when food orders taken.. Burger returned as was under cooked for my liking, honey roasted ham was full of Clove flavour and not mentioned and was left uneaten, breakfast eggs were runny and undercooked and lacked a decent portion. Good food but over priced and not to our taste.

The kindly owners of the Notley Arms shared free Wifi with desperate students from King's College School, WImbledon, who were visiting on a Biology fieldtrip locally. Finding themselves without Wifi and needing to prepare for the BMAT & NSA OxBridge Admissions Tests there were tears.......

Excellent food and service, bit of a limited menu for vegetarians. But the staff/kitchen were more than happy to put something together for my wife on short notice as she didn't like the options available. Absolutely amazing food, my steak was cooked to perfection. All...

Stayed overnight for work in the area and what a wonderful friendly place and excellent food. Staff were extremely helpful with advice on local walking/ running routes and also enabled me to work on my laptop before leaving in mid morning. I'll definitely stay again when next in the area as the food was super.

Used the Notley Arms for lunch en route to Devon , We had read good reviews but did not pre book. Full menu available at lunch time with some yummy options. Decor is a qurky mix of old and new very cleverly put together.

Stayed 28th July. This was the last of 4 nights away. One at the Castle Hotel, Taunton and two at Burgh Island. The room was fine and everything that we required. The food was the best that we had all week . Next morning my wife and I had a full English. All of it was good, the sausage being the star. There is a very interesting church less than 50 yards away from the Inn with gargoyles a plenty. We will definitely return

A very good dog friendly pub with rooms. Rooms clean, food brilliant, friendly staff and dogs allowed everywhere. Only thing that could be improved is the guest entrance to the hotel, very tired and need of updating. Otherwise a brilliant stay!

What a fabulous lunch. There were eight of us who ordered a variety of sandwiches, toasties and cream teas. Food was excellent and great value for money. Service was quick and friendly. People have written reviews complaining about the decor which is actually very tastefully done. Besides, with such great food in a beautiful setting why worry about the decor!
