The Ship, Caton in Lancaster

Terrible. Bread was microwaved, hard and inedible. The trimmed chicken dish was so salty I couldn’t eat it. Such a waste of money.

We had previously been to the ship and enjoyed our visit so decided to return on Thursday Evening the 29th August 2024 Before we went checked menu on-line looked promising more or less decided on what to choose When we arrived we were given a short menu absolutely nothing promising on this one if we hadn’t been meeting family there we would have left and on hindsight we should have. Thursday was steak night so i asked the bar tender what came with the steak “chips or fries salad and a bottle of wine £40 for two so we decided on this Family arrived one wanted lamb burger to which the waitress replied we may have run out I will check and let you know, do you have a second choice. The second choice being fish and chips if the lamb was not available. Another family member ordered Cajun chicken burger. Waited ages before food arrived with no-one letting us know if the lamb was still available or not Food arrived no lamb so he received fish and chips the batter was that over done it nearly jumped off his plate when he cut into it . We had to ask for steak knives a few minutes later had to ask where is the salad the waitress came back and said chef has put together a salad for you and plonked a bowl down we then had to ask for the bottle of wine we ordered medium rare for the steaks, mine was on the verge of well done partners was raw in the middle daughter in laws could not eat her burger as it was so overcooked When the waitress finally appeared again we voiced our concerns with the food she removed our plates and came back and saidno charges for the one steak and chefs agreed it was raw We were told as for the burger it was a thick piece of chicken!!!so does the chef not know what to do with a thick chicken breast Our bill came to £70 for this price we feel we should have least enjoyed our food overall it was poor. I will never return or recommend to anyone

Family and friends birthday tea. Absolutely loved it. Roast dinner was out of this world. Chicken Caesar and summer berry salads are perfect. Can not fault it at all. Friendly welcoming staff will recommend to anyone and will definitely visit again.

Visited with a group of 12 for a friends Birthday…great food and lovely service would definitely recommend. The roast beef dinner was one the best I’ve had in years. My daughter had the Caesar salad and thought it was wonderful. Also this place was great value for money

We were dying of Starvation on our way up the M6. Heading for Kirkby Lonsdale, we could not make it. The Ship came to our rescue. We just walked in the service was immediate and attentive and the food was great. I was really impressed with how our waitress and the kitchen were very flexible in substituting some things on the menu to suit our individual needs. We are going to go back for Sunday roast really soon as we were informed how excellent that will be. I will give a further review regarding that experience. For now however I would absolutly recommend the Ship. Mark and Meg

First class food and lovely welcome! We called in ‘on spec’ after visiting relatives in the area. We were given the warmest of welcomes (despite it being almost past food serving time). The food was top quality and utterly delicious. Good selection of beers, wines and spirits on offer. Very highly recommended! We will definitely be back!

Called here as a in the moment decision as we was passing on Sunday 19 May and can say it was a correct decision. This place from the staff to the Ambiance of the place and last, but most certainly not the least,is the food !! Well I can honestly say that our Sunday lunch was the best we’ve had in any pub anywhere.Do visit if your passing even if it’s just to sit and have a drink.

Called in yesterday 12 May for a drink with my hubby and we decided to eat as it wasn’t too busy. Had a Sunday roast each and it was excellent. Veg and meat ( beef and lamb) cooked to perfection, and sublime gravy! Excellent friendly service and nothing too much trouble. We will definitely be back !!

We've had a very enjoyable experience here before with good food. We were looking forward to a similar experience tonight with friends. Unfortunately we were disappointed with the toilet facilities, the male lavatory had a loose seat and there was a lot of 'water' on the floor below the urinals. The ladies toilet did not have any soap for handwashing. The issue with the soap was raised with the bar staff and ignored. After half an hour this hadn't been rectified. We were concerned if the cleanliness of the toilets weren't a concern to staff could we be assured other areas were eg the kitchen. We decided to leave and informed staff of the reason. Again they showed no interest, very disappointing

Menu was perfect - the best of Gastro Pub and I honestly struggled to pick one dish! We will be back very soon to try the rest of the fantastic menu. Service fab, atmosphere friendly, Reasonably priced for the quality

Had a Sunday dinner here and it was amazeballs. All three courses were brilliant from start to finish. Starter was the owner's own creation and was lovely. Lamb melted in your mouth. My husband loved the smoked carrot puree that was on the plate along with the meat, yorkie and roasters. Both enjoyed our desserts. My husband's ice cream was proper vanilla bean and my creme brulee had a superb cracking caramelised top to it. Would definitely eat here again.

Service was really friendly and fast. My chip butty was incredibly good, and the half of bitter I had was perfect. Great place for a pit stop, before getting back on the M6, nice roaring fire. It was so remarkably good that I decided to open a Trip Advisor account to leave a review. Really impressed. I'd drive to Lancashire for another butty.

We took my Mum (a regular visitor to The Ship @ Caton) for an early Mothers Day lunch on 2nd March 2024. It was my second visit and I have to say it did not disappoint. The gentleman Proprietor was extremely attentive, polite, kind and could not do enough for us. He also took time to talk with us and make us feel very much at ease and comfortable. The food was ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ and absolutely delicious. I would 100% recommend this lovely Lancashire pub/eatery to anyone looking for somewhere that "has it all", a welcoming atmosphere, great hosting and unbelievably great fayre. I will certainly be going back to "The Ship at Caton" as often as I possibly can. Thank you for a truly lovely afternoon which was very well worth what I paid. Fantastic service. Gareth.

Well done to the chef and staff at this friendly local pub in Caton, for organising a wonderful Supper Club event. A seven course tasting menu with wine flight was served by friendly staff, and the chef was keen to interact with customers after service to gain feedback and meet everyone. This team understand that hospitality is about people, and they were all kind and welcoming. The chef is ambitious and unafraid to try things - and I applaud this approach. When many pubs are simply reverting to short order dishes for ease and convenience, this team are daring to be different, and should be supported. Excellent cocktails, and attention to detail from the bar staff was much appreciated.

Absolutely brilliant place to eat. The food was excellent, superb quality, wonderful array of well combined flavours and beautifully cooked. The atmosphere was very friendly, great music that wasn’t intrusive and the general ambience just perfect. We stumbled across it after a lovely drive through the Trough of Bowland. I would highly recommend.

Our first visit for thirty years or so was for Sunday lunch. It was uniformly excellent with plenty of chicken, a large Yorkshire pudding and very tasty vegetables, some of which were roasted. The dessert was a cheesecake but one with an unusual but delicious texture. The only regret was the very limited choice of draught beer. We shall be back for more.

A very welcoming and cosy environment on a cold January night. My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed Steak Night last evening. Beautifully seared and cooked sirloin and ribeye, scrumptious chips, dressed rocket. Initially I was disappointed there wasn’t onion rings, mushrooms etc…you really do not need them, the steak does all the talking! Thank you for your hospitality and service, first class.

We had the steak night special: two steaks (choice of rump or sirloin), sauce ( four different types including Diane, blue and peppercorn) chips and a bottle of wine for £40. Everything was fantastic and would highly recommend. Will definitely go again

Lovely pub and restaurant, staff were so friendly, the chefs passion for creating new recipes really is demonstrated in the delicious food we had. 10 people all 3 courses and everyone really enjoyed it. Staff went out of their way to accommodate us .

We live in Brookhouse and this was the first time we had eaten at The Ship since it changed hands and we had a lovely lunch. The service and food were excellent and we will definitely be back!

The Lamb hot pot was fantastic we had lunch here. Food excellent and the staff so helpfull.The open fire was so warm on a cold winters day. Highly recommend to all.

This place just keeps getting better......the food is truly excellent and I say that as not exactly a 'foodie' historically.....but I've really enjoyed everything I've had there so far. Tonight we went in for the Christmas menu, my wife had the black garlic roasted celeriac and myself the beef brisket bourguignon both fabulous and the desserts were equally good. Great staff with just the right degree of attentiveness. This place was closed for a long time re-opened earlier this year and these owners are well experienced and up and running so do yourself a favour and get yourself in....you won't regret it. PS: equal praise for the ales (and I do know a bit about them :-) )

Really great meal and a warm friendly welcome. We had a three course meal and really enjoyed everything we’d chosen. The food was clearly home made to a really great standard. The Cheese pudding starter was a particular favourite. We will definitely going back again.

We booked a table for 12 at The Ship Inn to celebrate my graduation with friends & family. The evening was faultless! The staff looked after us with care and attention, decorated the table beautifully and the 3 courses were all delicious, well presented and each dish was served like clockwork, which isn't easy for a larger table. All our guests praised the quality of the food. Not our first visit and won't be our last. Highly recommend the cheese pudding starter....a real gem! It was great to see The Ship reopen in tricky times and have made several visits with family and friends …. However on two consecutive occasions recently , following perfectly reasonable requests on behalf of vegetarians , temper tantrums which seem to prevail in the kitchen spilled over into the customer zone . No pub can thrive if customers are treated face to face with contempt , thereby undoing the efforts others are making to welcome customers and keep The Ship afloat …

Wow! Really enjoyed the Ship Inn. Food was great, menu was fascinating, staff & service was excellent. It’s a while since I really enjoyed pub grub but this whole experience was brilliant and the place had a great feel to it.

Since the new owners took over earlier this year 2023, this place has gone from strength to strength. A lovely cosy pub, with great beers and wines. The food is totally amazing and well worth eating there. It’s a seasonal menu that is executed perfectly. The service is attentive and friendly by all the staff. There is a dog friendly part of the pub to eat and drink too.

This is my first time at The Ship Inn and It certainly will not be my last. Great welcome by friendly faced staff on arrival and taken straight to our seats that were pre booked. We were given plenty time to settle in with our drinks and to look through the menu which had a great choice of food. Two of us had the Mushroom and Fennel soup and one of us had Fishcake for starters - The Soup was amazing and the fishcake was a good size with great big chunks of fish inside telling you that this is no ordinary fishcake. By this time we were very exited about the mains if the starters were anything to go by. I'm a big fan of burgers so thought I'd give them a go as did another in our party and one of us order the Roast Chicken Gyro. The Gyro was of a good portion and both the flatbread and chicken were cooked to perfection and if anyone was to tell you that a burger is a burger then they are wrong - as I mentioned before I'm a big burger fan and these burgers was the best I've ever came across in any pub or restaurant. I can't wait to go back and next time I would love a double burger please as they were so so good. I have to mention that the Mayonnaise was home made and you really can't beat that. I also have to mention the coke - I only had one drink the whole time we were there and it was not diluted down like some places, it was full of flavour and had not gone flat in the whole time it took to eat our starters and main course which is so unusual these days which is why I thought it deserved to have a special mention. I have to say a big thank you to the Chef and all the kitchen staff, waiters and bar staff. Double burger next time please. Very willing to pay the extra cost!!!

Just had a late Sunday lunch at The Ship . We were very impressed - lovely food, tasted like home - best Yorkshire Puddings by far!. Staff were friendly, welcoming and attentive - so much so thst we've booked for their impressive Christmas Fayre.

After seeing their were new tenants we-thought we would give it a try. many years ago, we used to dine here regularly. The ship Inn-had the same layout as previous as I remember it. on arrival, we were asked what we wanted to drink (hardly had time to sit down before this happened). trying too hard to please. we chose our food from a limited choice on the menu .the offering on the board for Fish as the main course, but the accompanying vegetables were very unusual for most peoples taste. our two choices of food, fish and chips with Pea fritter was excellent, well presented and reasonably priced. The home-made steak pie and mash potato was also very good. unless they extend the choice of menu we will not be making a quick return, although having enjoyed it there was not enough choice to encourage us to return soon

Called in to have a Sunday lunch. Pub was nearly empty ( 1.30pm) but was looking forward to a decent meal. Ordered the beef with a glass of merlot. Upon tasting, found meat stringy and tough, mash potatoes lumpy and hard, vegetables under cooked and a tasteless gravy ( bisto? ). Overall a big disappointment from the new chef, and at nearly £17, is well overpriced. Drinks extra.

This is the first time we have visited here since it changed hands and there were pluses and minuses. Its our local village pub, and we have had some local reviews saying the food proportions were are little stingy. More than happy to say they are NOT. the food was great and I only just managed to eat all mine, and my wife had to leave some chips that she just couldn't manage. The pricing was spot on, just what we would expect. The only small minus was the atmosphere, was a bit lacking, probably, a little expected as it was a Thursday evening, But i did think the actual eating area just lacked a bit of something as it just seems sparse, and bare. Hard to pin down just what it was missing. But got to say will will visit again. Thank you for a nice meal.

We booked a table for Sunday lunch . The roast beef dinner was very tasty and the beer too was well kept, clear and tasted good.The staff came to the table to collect all orders, covid precautions seemed ok...although we saw one man stand fir some time without a mask and he wasnt challenged, if we had been closer we would have asked him was he exempted ? The toilets were a one in one out self regulated. There was a sanituser on entry and on the table. Lots of people outside didnt look far enough apart. We sat inside.

I have been here many times before and absolutely can not fault the food. We booked for 1.30 as we where slightly early our so our order was taken 1.30, 2.30 still no food. Despite a nearby table having ordered finish their meal in that time! After 50 minutes my husband asked where our food was and ordered more drinks ABSOLUTELY no APOLOGY! 25 minutes later our food eventually arrived. I ordered of the specials. Baked Chicken Breast Stuffed with taleggio and sun fried tomatoes. My knowledge of Italian cookery though limited interpreted this as stuffed with cheese and tomato not rapped in bacon! I don’t eat bacon! no apology again just what would I like instead and no correction to the special board made. We asked what had happened to our second drinks order that never arrived. 30 minutes later after several prompts our drinks arrived. When my meal finally arrived our children had left boarded rather than a family meal I was left eating my meal alone after the rest of the family had finished. To add insult to injury when asked for the bill the drinks order we never reserved was add to the bill. Only after I confronted what I believe to be the land lady saying anyone can make a mistake but still no apology as such I informed her attitude I throughout stinks! I sat down, time again marched on so my husband again asked for the revised bill which in fairness this time had removed the two glasses of wine I can only take this as a apology because no verbal one was given! Again I absolutely can not fault the food it was delicious. However at no point did any senior members of staff speak to try to resolve things other than take an alternative order that I received with all the grace of frisbee! The only person who apologised was the young waiter and waitress. Saying we where advised of a wait on food we where not! after we arrived we did however over hear after my husband asked about the food there was a 30-45 minute wait to new arriving customers. Can I suggest senior management/staff/owners book onto conflict resolution and customer service corse ASAP complements to the chef and the young waiter and waters that eventually served us. The real test of a good establishment is how they deal with things when inevitably things go wrong if our order had been misplaced which I presume the drinks and food order had been. If at this had been explained I would have understood we are all under pressure at the moment, but to make excuses and bad service sorry there is no excuse.

Just popped in whilst out for the day on the way home, had a lovely family meal, we hadn't booked before hand but they managed to accommodate us, the staff were really lovely and the food was even better. The bar lady was lovely with our boistrus 5 year old boy.Would definitely come again

We stopped here off speck for a spot of lunch whilst out for a drive. So glad we did. We sat outside in the sun and had a posh fish finger sandwich and a roast ham sandwich. Both served with salad and the best ever homemade chips. Massive portions and freshly made. Superb. The tow ladies who looked after us were great. So friendly and welcoming. We will definitely return and I would highly recommend the Ship to foodies. Brilliant

Very disappointed with our experience. The vegetable lasagne was clearly microwaved and had a dry handful of lettuce straight out the bag without even a drizzle of olive oil plonked next to it. Just a little layer of vegetables with a handful of cheese scorched on top. Confused by the the positive reviews as the meal was really, really below par. Was actually fairly amusing when we were served this as it looked like something you’d be served in a road side cafe! Also the menus aren’t particularly accurate - ‘fresh greens’ turned out to be peas on a plate. No track and trace and our details weren’t taken in regards to Covid etc. Rare I’d go to the length of writing a review but feel very resentful for paying the amount we did for a microwaved sheet of lasagne and cheese Also note the ‘garlic bread’ which was a crunchy slither of toast!?

As lockdown lifts we start dinning out to support local business and enjoy a taste of normality. Pre book as is the new normal. Very friendly team, very clean, gel as you enter. Food was very good quality with local ingredients used. Steak pie was truly mouthwatering. I had chips instead of mash and the chips were proper hand cut. Chocolate torte dessert was very tasty and rich. Defo worth a visit. Support good local businesses rather than chains.

Visited Monday evening, very quiet.Welcomed with a smile. Pub was very clean, and comfortably warm on a cold, wet night.Meals served in about 15 minutes. Steak and Ale pie was a proper pie, not a bowl of stew with puff pastry lid, and was the tastiest pie I've ever had in a pub. Absolutely delicious! My wife's Burger was massive, and she really enjoyed it, and my Dad's Cumberland sausage was very tasty.All three of us felt satisfied. Puddings were not very big for the price, but to be honest any bigger and we'd have felt stuffed. Quantities were about right, and they were very tasty.I didn't use the loo myself, but my wife reported that they were "absolutely spotless"!Overall a very friendly place, with delicious food.

Inclusively food, cooked perfectly. It’s deserves a visit if you visit the region. In winter, the log fire in the dinning room is really cozy

Went in for Sunday Tea last week while feeling like not cooking. The whole family enjoyed our food. Adults really got on with a perfectly cooked steak and triple cooked chips with all the usual extras. Kids had burger and chicken nuggets. Empty clean plates all round. Top job by all the staff on duty thank you.
